Middle Aged Dummies - Artist - Round 5 - #1's have been posted. Link in OP. (1 Viewer)

Yep, Damien Jurado is my next artist. Just need to get this from 50+ down to 31. Never easy.

he's out on tour now
Unfortunately just on the west coast though. There are so many artists I want to see that do some here but I don't really have anyone to go with anyway :( El Club in Detroit has do many good shows coming up like Blondshell. Nourished by Time was this past weekend. But nobody I know has any clue who they are and my wife isn't keen on it either (and I already drag her to a million things she doesn't want to go to).

I’ve never heard of him — and I say that in a good way as looking forward to someone new to me, as have liked your artists so far.
He's mostly folk-indie rock. Seattle guy who has been around since the 90s. I would say a little Elliot Smith, a little Smog, little Kevin Morby.

Pretty eventful week for MADs adjacent albums

A mini LP from Conor

and a three disc tome from Jeff

A true MADs adjacent by a band that includes the daughter of Kevin Haskins from Bauhaus

Live Humble Pie from 1983

Everybody loves Neko Case right?

Career spanning compilation from The Boomtown Rats

Indie band of the moment not to be confused with Goose

Single named lady is from Germany with some down tempo post-rockish stuff

This guy's solo catalog would make for interesting MADs listening

As would this band

A sound effects album by Fred Armisen :oldunsure:

Plus Marcus King, Amanda Shires, SPRINTS, Cate Le Bon, Doja Cat, Purity Ring, Rainbow Kitten Surprise and a new remaster of Kilkenny Cats :excited:

My first full listen is from a jazz supergroup named Trio of Bloom. It features a big favorite of @wikkid pissah pianist Craig Taborn along with Wilco's Nels Cline and drummer Marcus Gilmore who is the grandson of the great Roy Haynes.

The music is largely electric jazz that fluctuates between fusion, afrobeat and ambient. There are no horns which I think may make it more accessible to rock listeners although it gets weird at times. Taborn plays synths with the occasional piano. He has some great interplay with Cline as the guitars and keys swap lead and rhythm while Gilmore cooks up a massive groove underneath.

Lots I’ve been looking forward to in this bunch.

Not a MAD artist but was covered in my live guitarist theme, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram has a new one out - and I’m seeing him again at the Stone Pony Sunday Night:

I looked for this last night but it wasn't up yet. Deluxe Edition means a new remaster superseding the 2007 mix and a live show from 1975.

The original LP was probably one of the first 30 records I ever bought so I've listened to it a lot and got accustomed with its sometimes soupy production. The separation and the clarify of the 2025 edition is better but different.

This album was really good - he’s really embraced the Americana/roots rock sound and is excelling at it at this late stage of his career.

He really has had an interesting and much better than expected post-Zep career.

Awesome - can’t wait to check this out. Thanks for the heads up!

From the start he didn’t want to rehash what Zep did. Even his collaborations with Page were distinctly different from their Zep work, and when Page wanted to rehash Zep, he had to enlist David Coverdale.

Disc 1 wasn’t anything ground breaking for Tweedy but it was very pleasant and didn’t hear any real clunkers for such a massive undertaking. Maybe they’re loaded up on Disc 3.
Got through Disc 2 and 3 - lots of very good songs interspersed with a few “just there” songs. It’s a mellow collection but a nice listen.

…or Paul Rodgers to form one of the most disappointing/lamest “super groups” of all-time.

No one was immune from the ‘80s.

Adjacent to my MAD Afrobeat theme… I posted earlier this year about the re-release of K. Frimpong and the Cubano Fiesta’s “Blue Album,” an artist featured in my 31. Their “Black Album” was re-released yesterday. (I’m sure I would get slapped for posting in the 2025 music thread even if it was never released outside Ghana back in its day.)

This one may have found a spot in my 31.

I'm slow on the draw for MADs adjacent albums this week but needless to say, I was listening to Taylor Swift right after it dropped on Thursday night (here). There aren't as many collective mass cultural experiences as there once were so listening to Taylor concurrently with the Swifties will have to suffice. Album is good but not great; she's been around long enough that her formula is pretty obvious at times.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is in town this weekend. I rode over for a few hours yesterday mainly to see Margaret Glaspy but also caught parts of sets by Rodney Crowell, Margo Price and Sinkane. We have an out of town visitor today so we're skipping HSB today. Friend of the thread Jeff Tweedy will be on the live stream from the Towers stage at 4:50 Pacific. Rosanne Cash, Buddy Miller, Steve Earle and a host of others are on other stages today. Don't know how much @simey is around these days but Robert Earl Keen is headlining the Rooster stage at 6:00.

There are also phone and smart TV apps

Not a lot of MADs adjacent albums this week. Taylor cleared out the release calendar.

Single named lady is the wonderful Ledisi who made my theme countdown. This time it's a Dinah Washington tribute

A lost album of tracks circa 73-84

Kozelek with beats :oldunsure:

Comeback from 70s prog band Pavlov's Dog

Comeback from 90s Britpop Ash

Comeback from 2000s UK Indie Idlewild

Week was heavy on remasters and deluxe editions from Joan Baez, Oasis, Supergrass, Wild Pink, Franz Ferdinand, Coheed and Cambria, My Morning Jacket and John Prine.

So will there even be a Round 6?

Yes, there will be. Had my house kinda destroyed by water damage. And this stuff drags on and on due to insurance, and contractor schedules. It's been three months now and some re-bulid drywalling has finally been done. Hopefully in about two weeks I can think about this.
No worries about this - sorry for your situation and hopefully it resolves in the best way possible.

It's going to be awesome when all done.

As someone who spent almost 2 months in a hotel because the upstairs toilet overflowed through most of the house, take your time. I know too well these things don't happen quickly.

Finished Clint Black last week, Zac brown band this week - while at Hilton Head island, moving on to Bob Seger and the silver bullet band. Will get into white zombie before Halloween.

Tomorrow our cats go to the vet for a prescheduled appointment, but we will ask them whether this is it for our 17-year-old Boo. She has various medical issues for which she is taking steroids and B12 supplements, but has been particularly lethargic and "out of it" for the past few days. And today she did not eat, even treats, though she did drink water. We will see if the vet thinks this is mainly due to the heat and she can bounce back from it, or whether the end is near. Fingers crossed.
It went better than we thought. Boo has a severe infection, related to the kidneys and/or teeth. They think this is the main reason why she has been lethargic recently. Given an antibiotics shot and pills. Also given a topical appetite stimulant. So most likely her condition is temporary and not the beginning of the end.

Nassau, age 15, has a heart murmur but a BNP test showed no sign of heart disease. She was started on the once-monthly solensia shot that Boo has already been getting. It treats pain related to osteoarthritis. Got the same antibiotics shot that Boo did due to signs of tooth infection, but does not need to go on the pills.
We are saying goodbye to Boo tomorrow.

She had become more lethargic again and on Friday lost control of her back legs while trying to eat. Her vet visit on Friday revealed that the mass in her lungs has grown and is probably impacting her ability to breathe. She was given antibiotics and an increased dose of steroids and they told us to call back on Monday with an update.

This time, unfortunately, she did not improve much on the antibiotics. She does not want to come downstairs and mostly confines herself to a few spots in our bedroom. And she appears uncomfortable and her breathing continues to be labored. The vet said it’s highly unlikely that she will get better, and likely has a few weeks left at most.

So we made the decision to put her to sleep. As with Cassidy 3 years ago, we are using a service that does the process at your house and they are coming tomorrow.

In the past few days she hasn’t eaten or used the litter box much and her breathing is getting more labored. So while we hate to make this decision, we know it is the right one.

Sorry, @Pip's Invitation - positive thoughts your way.

And no surprise - I am waffling on artist yet again. :bag:

2 promises I need to keep going forward - 1 artist, and don't pre-declare. A lot can happen and moods change. Problem is, all I have been listening to in the last couple months is metal and my guitar heavy previous artists of Dino and Journey.

don't pre-declare.

Who would do that?
I get why people do, it's a lot of work. It just doesn't seem to fit me and my mood swings sometimes.
Sorry, was joking because I had at least 3 artists I either selected or was going to for the next round. And I changed in previous rounds.
Got it. I don't remember people changing, but I don't remember much these days.

What started as "music and Mariners" as I watched games over the last couple months at night turned into "metal and Mariners" pretty quickly. That and my general mood had me leaning more to that genre than I have been in the last few years, so Aimee Mann research hasn't been done for a bit. I am sure something will hit me before this starts, but there are also a couple metal acts in the mix and I hesitate to through more in the mix from that genre.

Hopefully I do Ozzy justice. I’d be happy to take suggestions if you’re so inclined.
Assuming you’re a fan that is.

Cha Ver Chez just turned up in my mix, followed by Lord Huron. This stuff is definetly affecting my listening pleasure. And Airborne Toxic Event was on, too. Thanks, guys.
