Backstreet Girl- Golden Smog- Really liked this one! Don't know why but this has a Rolling Stones vibe to me.

As mentioned in my write up (I don't get offended if someone skims through), it's a cover of a Stones song, so that would make sense.
:bag::bag::bag:

I'm a moron. my apologies. I do try to read everyones write ups. was skimming this morning trying to get caught up.
My excuse is reading <> remembering.

No worries.

I’ll admit sometimes I just skim people’s write ups since I really only care about the music and not so much the artists/songs histories.

I might have missed it - what’s the expected launch schedule? Every 3 days?
I think it's Tuesday, Thursday and Sundays. So there should be one today.
Yep.

Today I found the time to do nice long almost Pip-worthy write ups for my top 4 and next three songs. Ambient didgeridoo music just might get me through another half dozen write ups.

There is a little behind the scenes technical difficulties. The new board formatting is making this a PitA.
Could just post the playlist link and not the songs.
Could look at his Spotify profile and find it that way. Not that anyone would ever do such a thing.
I wouldn't want that peek into the chaos that is my Spotify. I think the playlist i made was number 430 or so.
:oldunsure:
I might have done that already.
And yes, you have a list addiction problem.

The Rolling Stones covered it during their sessions for 1989's Steel Wheels album. It was never released, but can be heard on YouTube.
A 1968 version in South Africa by the Durban based group, The Flames, reached the top spot on the local charts[7] and has been considered a classic in the country ever since.
Roy Meriwether covered this instrumentally, on the album “Soul Knight” (1968, Capitol Records)
David Allan Coe on his 1984 album, “Just Divorced”.

Comments - This song has more than just a passing resemblance to Unchained Melody

The Otis Redding recording appears at the beginning of the 2006 French thriller Tell No One by Guillaume Canet and on the film's soundtrack album.
This recording can be heard in the 1993 film A Bronx Tale directed by Robert De Niro who also stars in the movie.

Next Up - A very, very early Otis track which has two different recordings and names.

The English Beat Family Tree #29

Doors of Your Heart

Artist - The English Beat
Album - Wha’ppen? (1981)

The second English Beat album was a fairly large shift from the first. While their debut I Just Can’t Stop It was chock full of massive hit singles and more upbeat tunes, Wha’ppen? was a bit toned down and had a more cohesive feel to the album.

This song was definitely evident of that shift, with a slightly slower tempo, while still keeping their variety of sound and even some Dub beats to it.

This is an awesome version. As you've shown, it's been covered a bazillion times. There's a reason for that and it's because most of the best songs are about affairs of the heart.

That said, I prefer the original by Butler & the Impressions. That's no knock on what Redding did with this song - he kills it. It's just that Butler (who was 17 and sounded like he was 60) sings it like he's both hopeful that he'll get her and also resigned to the fact that he never will. Otis kind of blows past the former and goes into the latter, as Otis tends to do

Great choice

Hundreds of Ways- Conor Oberst
from Upside Down Mountain (2014)

‘There are hundreds of ways to get through the day,
There are hundreds of ways – now you just find one’

Hundreds of Ways is the lead single of the album, and perhaps the most upbeat and "poppy" song on my countdown. With The Swedish duo First Aid Kit (if you don't know then check em out) a Caribbean rhythm and prominent baseline, this has a Paul Simon type feel to it.

In a guest-column for Q Magazine Oberst wrote that Hundreds of Ways “is a song of encouragement. Maybe for myself or someone else. The idea that you just have to keep going even when you are covered in mud and ****. Your options are limitless once you take the yoke off and believe you are free. And the truth is everyone you have ever looked up to was just making it up as they went along.”

You know I’ve got to give props to Mayfield’s guitar on the original too. His unique tuning gives it sort of a dream-like/heavenly feel. But, yeah, I like Otis’s version too.

Mayfield was 15 years old (!!!!!!) and basically was the arranger on that record.

#29 The Way (Spotify) - The GAP Band

The first of the songs in my playlist from The GAP Band III album released in 1980. This one was probably really the last that I added to the playlist. I was considering leaving out because I thought I might have too much from The GAP Band III on it, but I decided to just put my 31 favorites on this list and let the number of songs per album fall where they may.

In reading stuff written about this song, the comparison that comes up the most is to another MAD artist this round: the Doobie Brothers. I definitely see that between the falsetto and piano.

#29 - Red Red Wine - Neil Diamond

From his 1967 second album Just For You. Seriously, these album titles just have to get better, right? Diamond had left Bang Records, but they continued to issue his stuff as singles. They added a background choir without his permission. I don't think he appreciated their efforts.

I've used the version from Hot August Night.

No spoilers, please.

Rob Halford deserves credit for giving John his first break. It was 96 and Halford was seeking a guitar player to work on songs he’d written inspired by industrial metal and grunge. John understood it wasn’t ready for the studio and pro bono, but it was the Judas Priest guy, so he was in. They worked at Halford’s house, hit it off and decided to form a band together, 2wo (two, the two of them).

By early 97 they’d chosen a bass player, drummer, wicked good keyboardist and songs for a debut LP. They released a couple singles, but John was also doing studio work for Lita Ford and ended up touring with her because she was opening for KISS. Halford was patient. After the Ford tour, kd lang requested John’s services for her tour, and of course, he said yes. Halford was patient. In early 98 David Lee Roth impressed with some John Lowery demos, gives him a call. John said yes. Halford remained patient.

Finally 2wo was back in the studio with Trent Reznor producing and finished the album, Voyeurs. It did poorly here but nicely in Europe, so that’s where they toured. Several tracks worked for me. One was a reasonably successful commercial hit in Europe, but another got stuck in my head after the first listen, so here’s Halford like you’ve possibly never heard him:

My Ceiling’s Low - 2wo

Upon returning from Europe John got a call from Marilyn Manson. They met. Manson offered and informed him he’d go by John 5. John said yes. Halford lost his new band’s co-founder and lead guitarist. Earlier I said it seemed reasonable if DLR was angry about the way John left him. Halford seems to have a stronger case. But all remain friends. A couple DLR/John 5 co-written songs made years later make my list. As does a Halford from the 00s and another from the 20s.

Ain't No Crime

Billy wrote this song for his 1973 album Piano Man. One of his favorite pianist is Leon Russell, and he said Leon always infused gospel into his piano playing, and that inspired him to write this "gospel boogie woogie" song. Billy said it is fun to play, and I think it is fun to hear. I love the rollicking piano, backup singers, organ and horns. It's one of my favorites off of Piano Man.

Not quite on the level of Metallica with the San Francisco symphony, Caro’s album with the Metropole Orkest is fantastic in its own right. I don’t remember if I used these versions in my countdown but two other songs on the album will be covered later.

The MO is a jazz and pop orchestra based in the Netherlands, and is the largest full-time ensemble of its kind in the world.

MO x Caro Emerald by Grandmono
Here, Carol is looking back at a past relationship.

BF is playing in my dining room
She makes the candles weep
It's after four, got my pen in hand
So I refuse to sleep
I stop and start and start again
And try not to pretend
That this letter I will write to you
Is one I'll never send
If that's what romance is, then what is love?
We had our chances; it can't be undone
One weekend in Paris and two nights in Rome
If that's what romance is, why did you go
Home?
I'm staring at my piano keys
But I refuse to play
It's like an unfinished melody
If there's far too much to say
The ink is wet, the paper's dry
It's waiting for the word
From the windmill spinning in my mind
And the voice I've never heard
If that's what romance is, then what is love?
We had our chances; it can't be undone
One weekend in Paris or two nights in Rome
If that's what romance is, why did you go
Home?

His malice-filled chatter about Billy J is a crime. So much so that I think Mr. Hai should be the first inmate imprisoned at Alcatraz when it reopens. I'm gonna fill out an application to be the warden, and my first order of business will be to play Billy Joel on the prison speakers 24/7.

I have no idea to this day what that Long Islander was singing about. Truth is, I don’t want to know. Some things are better left unsaid.

MA-D Round 5: Metallica
#29: The Unforgiven
Album: Metallica [aka The Black Album] (1991)

(Official music video) Metallica - The Unforgiven (Official Music Video)
(live version) The Unforgiven (Edmonton, Alberta - August 16, 2017)
(The Unforgiven 1,2&3 together) Metallica - The Unforgiven I, II & III (Non Stop Version)

Ooh, a vow unto his own
That never from this day
His will they'll take away

For a bit this combated with songs from my last 10 out, primarily “Sad But True”. Honestly, I could be selling The Unforgiven short. This probably earns a spot just from the tone set by the opening horn (reversed as it is) and Kirk’s solo (which he’s described as an improvised and “raw emotion”). For that matter, I won’t be surprised about opinions that it should be switched with something higher ranked.

I could blame overexposure for its drop on a personal level, but it’s not like I haven’t heard other Metallica songs more often since the early 90s. So there’s just a disconnect where I liked The Unforgiven more than I do now, and I can’t expect to ever get back that point. C'est la vie.

Anyway, as alluded to in the previous “next on” blurb, neither The Unforgiven II or The Unforgiven III made the cut. This may be the first time you’ve learned that there was a 3rd, given that it was on 2008’s Death Magnetic. Heck, some of you probably missed the 2nd one from ReLoad. I included a link above that strings the three songs together. That’s over 20 minutes, so definitely consider it optional.

-
Next on the countdown, speaking of Death Magnetic, it’s time to visit it. In case you thought that was a time which wouldn’t arrive.

#29: PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS - DAYS LIKE THESE

And now we get to the sentimental side of PUTS. This song is from Stepfather, which is the album after O.S.T. There are 4 years between the two albums, and a few things happened during that time. Yeah they got older, Thes got married, and they didn't have a contract to a record company anymore. In combination with that last fact, they also felt that sample based hip-hop was getting stale because of the over-reliance on jazz samples. They were even critical of their first 3 albums and wanted to push themselves to create a unique album trying to use a broader pool of sample and their love of other genres. They also were frustrated with industry being reliant on hot singles and getting away from a focus on cohesive albums.

They have a lot of autobiographical lyrics sprinkled in songs throughout the albums, but they also have several songs like this that are completely that way and talking about family and friends. This one is specific, but I also like the universal feel to the lyrics as it's easy for any listener to understand similar sacrifices made for us. In 2021 Thes made an online video after Double K passed and played original samples they used to create the albums, and this tune and sample in particular made him emotional.

Yeah, I wanted Transformers and them fresh turntables
And really didn't understand, when they wasn't able

We made it off the plane on September 10th
July 3rd, I live to pay another month of rent

NEXT: Another autobiographical song about one of those dates mentioned.

#29: BECK - DEVIL'S HAIRCUT

I think Odelay will be where I get a few grumbles from the group as I lean away from the singles and hits like I tend to do. I like the singles fine, especially this one, but that is an album I have listened to a ton since the day it came out and I've always had a couple odd personal favorites. I tried to spread the wealth and limit myself to a max of 5 on an album for MAD31s, and it was too hard to knock out a few others I love a lot.

Something's wrong 'cause my mind is fading
Ghetto-blastin' disintegrating
Rock 'n' roll, know what I'm saying?
Everywhere I look, there's a devil waiting

NEXT: What I put in my chai tea and use to start the party?

ETA: forgot to add the video. I forgot how good Beck's videos were.
