oh **** @Uruk-Hai ...they're all Billy Joel!!!!
I haven't turned in my list yet, so that isn't my string of songs. I was going to submit both YouTube and Spotify links, but I guess I will just do Spotify if the YouTube links aren't working correctly when done that way. I'll just post a YouTube link old style in each round for each song introduction. I don't think Uruk has Spotify, but I could be wrong.
I and several others have youtube and spotify links.
Sometimes the film clip is worth watching and in the case of one Otis song the version is better than anything on spotify

I’ve sent in both as well. Do that normally, but mine has some good music videos too.

I suspect if you don't Binky it, your links will be fine.

I have one song only on YouTube. Any other YouTube links, I'll just post in the commentary. And I have quite a few.

My list is in. I'll post the last 10 (yes, 10) out tomorrow after doing some brief writeups of them.

Album breakdown of my top 31. It does not add up to 31 because Arthur Lee was constantly re-recording old songs and some appear on more than one studio album.

Love (1966): 4
Da Capo (1966): 5
Forever Changes (1967): 9
Four Sail (1969): 5
Out Here (1969): 3
False Start (1970): 3
Vindicator (Arthur Lee solo, 1972): 2
Reel to Real (1974): 2
Arthur Lee (Arthur Lee solo, 1981): 1
Arthur Lee and Love (1992; reissued as Five String Serenade in 2003): 1
Love Lost aka Found Love: The Lost '71 Sessions (recorded 1971, released 2009): 1
Black Beauty (recorded 1973, released 2012): 1
Other: 1

Same here. Just saw you up and figured I’d throw a what’s up and say hello. I won’t muck up the thread, but I hope things look up for you, brother.

I’ve been doing some drip last out posts throughout, and will do one more. I ended up not including any songs on which Charlie Wilson provides backing vocals for artists, and decided just to stick with either The GAP Band or Charlie Wilson as the main artists. But you could probably pull together a good playlist of just songs that Charlie Wilson provided backing vocals on. I posted some Snoop songs earlier in the thread. I’ll post a few more that you may or may not realize the connection.

I Ain’t Gonna Stand for It (Spotify) - Stevie Wonder

This song made @Uruk-Hai ’s Round 1 playlist for Stevie Wonder. (See his write-up here.) Backing vocals included both Charlie Wilson and Ronnie Wilson. Stevie Wonder would return the favor on a song, but maybe that will come up some day.

Computer Love (Spotify) - Zapp & Roger

This has become a pretty well-sampled track. Roger Troutman on the voice box, and Charlie Wilson laying down the vocals. Charlie Wilson had a great version on an NPR Tiny Desk concert recently; I’d post a link to that, but some of the other songs in the link could be a bit spoiler-y.

Bound 2 (Spotify) - Kanye West

Much like with Snoop, Charlie Wilson has provided background vocals to a lot of Kanye West songs (his credits also include a lot of songs on Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album, including a couple of Kanye’s biggest hits in Runaway and Monster). Charlie Wilson provides my favorite part of this song when he drops in. If you want a Kanye-free version, here’s a sample of just Charlie Wilson’s part.

I know you're tired (tired) of loving, of loving
With nobody to love, nobody, nobody
So just grab somebody, no leaving this party
With nobody to love, nobody, nobody (to love)

Earfquake (Spotify) - Tyler the Creator

YouTube link goes to a performance at the 2020 Grammy’s where you can see Charlie Wilson leading the harmonies at the start.

Sorry for the late notification, but I'm going to have to bow out of this MAD countdown.

I'll still listen to some playlists when I can.

Hope to participate in the next one......

Binky and I are in sync with the high should be low, and low should be high thing, so it is possible I Binky it up.

When someone asks who the best team in college football is do you cite the #1 ranked team or the 350th ranked team?
Alternatively, playlists can be ranked in play order in which it is meant to be played. My brain fights this battle every time.

I am going to pop in the Beck playlist since we are under 30. I've basically had it ready for a couple years, but @Eephus' post pushed me to do some relistening and it fell in place. Like Lord Huron, I won't talk too much about the songs after the intro and last 5 out, so very little extra work that way. Also, this will be the last double up, I promise. I don't have any others left I wanted to share in this format, but thought Beck would provide some fun summer music.

BECK

Beck and I almost had to break up. Like everybody else I had Mellow Gold when it came out because of Loser. I liked the rest of the album as well, but one of my dorm neighbors ruined Beck for a couple years. For reasons I will never understand, he made a tape that he played over and over. Side A: Loser repeated Side B: Weezer's Sweater Song repeated. Luckily for Beck and my ears, Odelay came next and I still loved that album and have had his album consistently in the background since then. Because of college, I didn't listen to Mellow Gold or earlier Beck for a decade + after. By then, I had fallen hard for his middle run of albums. The main one is Sea Change, which I often bring up in album of the decade type discussions. That is still the album of his I listen to the most.

There still were a couple album blindspots and when we started doing this stuff a couple years ago I really dug back through all his albums. It reinforced my love of a few albums and gave me a couple more to add to the heavy rotation that I hadn't been listening to enough. Sea Change is a go-to as a rare "softer" album that I love so it gets heavy play, but most of the others were my "fun" music that put me in a good mood, like People Under the Stairs became.

Beck has 14 albums, but we will only have 10 on the playlist. Choices have to be made, and I stand by them. Mostly I think Mellow Gold does a much better job of the earlier sound than
One Foot in the Grave, his debut, and Stereopathic. Mutations I like, but in a similar vein there are better verisons of similar songs on Odelay or Sea Change. So that leaves us with 10 albums. I've already hinted at a couple favorites, but I will let the # from each album reveal itself. For my PUTS list my playlist goes by album in order of release after a bit. For this playlist, since there are 10 albums what I did was make the top 10 my favorite song from each album and I will countdown my ranking of Beck albums in the top 10. There are 2 albums that only have 1 song each, so those will be my #9 and #10 songs. It's weird, but it works as I listen to the playlist so that is what stuck.

LAST 5** OUT:

** 6 really - Spoiler Alert: Loser will not make the playlist. I have gotten to the point where I don't insta-skip it, but I've heard it way too much still. Sorry.

After I went through again this last week I decided to focus all on Beck and 95% on albums. Because of that, these 3 were some of the very last cuts. The Paisley Experience is fun medley of Prince covers. Some of my favorite songs are his collaborations, which he has a lot of - especially recently. Death Valley High and Odyssey were the songs I gravitated to the most of the collaborations.

Here we have the last two that got bumped out this week. I am pretty sure I owned all the Beck albums from Odelay up to Morning Phase, but for some reason there were 2 I don't remember listening to at all. If I did, not enough to remember. Cellphone's Dead and Broken Train come from 2 albums from those extremes in my listening. One from an album I listen to all the time, and one I felt I was hearing for the first time a couple years ago.

I hope this one is a fun addition for most of the MAD listeners. There are a couple hits not on the playlist, but there will still be plenty of known songs in there mixed in with my odd personal favorites.

An interesting feature of these chuckwallas is that they're like puffer fish and can blow themselves up to look twice their size. Puffers do it to be intimidating and deploy their spikes should they end up in the mouth of a predator. Chuckwallas have a different purpose. They don't blow up openly. It leaves them defenseless, unable to walk . You could pick one up and have a lizard balloon. Instead they slip into the rocks and inflate, wedging themselves in so tightly they cannot be removed. That's what happened yesterday, so I didn't catch one.

When I left this desert at 18, I swore I'd never come back. When I came back at 50, it was a temporary stay while I decided where to retire. A few years later I felt I'd made peace with the desert but would move on eventually. A few more years in the books, and I don't think I'll ever leave. Winters are mild and attract snowbirds. Some stay and join our growing community of retirees. Summers are hell and kill unprepared snowbirds, some unfortunate babies and pets every year. Spring and fall can vary but I challenge anyone to find more beautiful weather than the many good days. It's heaven on earth. Today is one of those days. It's been this way for weeks and it should last three or four more.

I finished my list so I'm going to celebrate by doing one of my favorite things. I'm taking a dirt road trip. I can't tell you where because I don't know where. There's millions of acres of BLM desert the other side of my back fence. I'll pick a dirt road and see where it goes. I packed my chuckwalla fishing pole, a metal detector, binoculars and a telescope, some bedding, a beach chair, a guitar, a little grill, a cooler with a juicy ribeye and a chuck steak, my little geode splitting sledge hammer, a pistol and a rifle. For company I'm picking up my kid's giant puppy. We may sleep in the desert tonight with a billion stars all around. We may not. Depends on how we feel after a two hour sunset and steaks. I expect a chuckwalla to join us and share some salad. If one does it means it wants to come home with us. If one doesn't everyone has a right to freedom.

I'll submit my list tomorrow. I'm wasting daylight. Cheers.

I’ve not be able to get enough of My Morning Jacket since your last countdown. At the time I said that I always liked what I heard but never really dove in, until the last MAD countdown.

I’ve probably listened to Z eight times in the last month, rotated their live albums in heavy and I love their new album, Is, and have spun that a few times since its release.

I listened to the new album a couple of times and nothing jumped out at me. Maybe it's a grower :oldunsure:

Heads up for those interested in the Doobie's song list.

Similar to the Chicago metamorphosis, The Doobies have a pretty severe style change with the addition of Michael McDonald - but instead of turning into schmaltzy dreck as Chicago did ...the Doobies turned into a smooth "yacht rock machine" that even a hard rocker could reluctantly love.

The Doobies were an early main-stay of my fairly limited record collection and this list reflects that ...in fact, just load up "Toulouse Street" and "The Captain & Me" albums and you've got 17 of the 31 songs on my list :). Tom Johnston rules!!!

If you're a McDonald-version Doobies fan - expect to see 6 of those.

I am not reshaping my world view such that "schmaltzy dreck" and "Yacht rock" have different meanings. Those synapses don't hunt.

:lmao: hey now ...no way can we categorize ALL songs possibly labeled "yacht rock" as crappy songs. that casts WAY too wide a net.

Actually, if we could even posssibly identify a yacht rock song I liked, I would immediately reclassify it as NOT yacht rock, because I couldn't possibly like a yacht rock song.

Some yacht rock songs just kick major butt

The Captain and Me is a top-tier album that doesn’t get its due as such.

I did Built To Spill last time but I am a huge (earlier) MMJ fan, including Z. Not as much a fan of their last few albums but I haven't heard the new one yet.

I think Landry's Hat did MMJ.

I did like Built to Spill a lot as well so may dive deeper into them as well.
