By the way, a quick Spotify glance shows that the brothers Daft have 20,666,489 listeners monthly, clocking at number #273 in the world, which isn't bad given the demographic and that their last release was ten years ago.
They've been broken up for quite some time, too.
My man, you're picking 31 from an artist with a really deep catalog. I was damned near in tears for some of the Stevie Wonder songs I left off of my list.Actually, I totally effed up. I didn't put in the time in making my list that this exercise deserved, especially as a big Rush fan. I simply opened the wiki Rush discography page and rattled out a list -- I clearly didn't double check. I apologize to fellow Rush fans for not taking this more seriously -- life simply got in the way. Again, I apologize. The unveiling of Freewill as Higgins' #3 Rush song means that at least one of 2112, YYZ or Red Barchetta will not be in his top 31, to which I can only say
But what do I know. My top 31 Rush is likely to contain 8 songs that don't appear in Higgins' top 31 OR in Ghost Rider's top 50.
There will be snubs. Some have already been spoiled. Several others have not. Some intentional, but others were tough cuts.Green Day, oy vey, will I get my top pick for them or was it eschewed? I consider it also the Perfect Green Day track. Again, one of their top two seems obvs, the other is a ?

Really loved this one#3 Swing The Heartache
i enjoyed highlighting the tightness and dexterity of the musicianship earlier on ... there are any number of off-brand themes they explored, and i tried to fit them in as snugly as possible, all while maintaining a list of what i consider to be true favorites.
however, as we inch closer to the finish line, it are the heavier and sludgier and more thematic offerings that take center stage ... case in point with this one, which wears "Goth" as proudly as "Hollow Hills" and "Bela".
this shift in tone also shifts the spotlight heavily to Peter and Danny, who shine out here in such amazing clarity ... the vitriolic anguish dripping outta Pete's murderous lyrics are achingly akin to the same contemptuous stylings of the earlier featured "Crowds" - he could hit this camp/vamp acidic note like nobody's biz - few frontmen ever embodied their band's essence as well as Murph ...
Out of her mouth it came as no surprise
Lipstick stained on whipcream lies
I feel that if I had been uglier
It would have been easier
There it sat, blinked and spat
In a black feather hat
And said "the rat"
one of my favorite lyric passages of all time ... open for interpretation, but when i called on it in the past, it served as the catalyst to imbue my muse with the deafening emptiness of ambivalence, if not outright disgust.
a huge Danny flex, as are becoming the norm as we inch up the ladder ... this are an unrelenting piercing ... death by 1,000 paper cuts - but then he crunches riffs amidst that punishing wall of sound, and those paper cuts morph into rapier plunges - if "She's In Parties" were his most expressive; then this are his most evocative ... stamping himself as one of the most innovative and crucial guitarists of not only that era, or of only post-punk, but for the ages. i am forever in love with this guy's talent and fearlessness.
the Haskin bros take a back seat simply by attrition - the two frontmen are hitting it so hard, that the bros get lost in the tsunami ... but then you are pounded with Kevin's mind numbing metronome beats, and David's accompanying thumps - yeoman work to keep that bottom as mesmerizing as the fireworks up front.
the coda, with Peter wailing over Danny's creepily crying chords, is just about as mind blowing as music has ever sounded to me - always need a smoke or two after a sit with this ... an exquisite aural sculpture, pure orgiastic theater.
I am too but I’ve noticed that 95% or so of the songs I love are from the last 3 albums: Folklore, Evermore, and Midnights. I can’t really get into her earlier stuff outside of a few of the pop hits. But the 3 albums I mentioned, particularly the first 2, are as good as any albums I’ve heard in around 40 years.

Yeah - 1989 and Red are two that I would add to the list.1989 is an absolute masterpiece.I am too but I’ve noticed that 95% or so of the songs I love are from the last 3 albums: Folklore, Evermore, and Midnights. I saw them open for Living Colour in 1990. They didn't have any albums out yet. Their set was louder and more obviously influenced by Bad Brains than the material that ended up on their records.I saw a band last Friday (not yesterday) called The Veldt. NCCU puts on a summer concert series in the park in Durham and The Veldt played. The band is from Raleigh. They were good, and were sorta like shoegaze soul sometimes and other times like indie soul/rock.
