Middle Aged Dummies!! Artists #1's have been posted!! (12 Viewers)

3s

Living on a Thin Line - 2nd favorite Kinks song
Josie - there's something about SD's sounds that generally just doesn't do it for me, but this is a great tune
Masterpiece - another great one
Well ****, I guess I'm a Swifty.
Beginnings - posted this as my favorite Chicago song in shukethread™ but I'm pretty sure Poem 58 now holds that spot.
Anybody Wanna Take Me Home - Favorite Ryan Adams song! That part that starts at 0:33, just so good.
Superstition - Favorite Stevie song!
Lawyers Guns and Money - classic. I remember at a college basketball game back in the day a kid had a sign that said "Hi Mom! Send lawyers, guns, and money". Always got a chuckle out of that.
Would - I know I've said it 47 times already, but such strong nostalgia here.
It's A Good Life - really liked this
Bennie and the Jets - I don't appreciate this song enough. Also, in before @Mister CIA posts that video of the cover by that shirtless hillbilly guy.

I am officially old now that I just said I "got a chuckle out of that".

Damon Albarn song #3

Blur - "London Loves" from Parklife (1994)

"London Loves" is Damon apeing Bowie again but this time it's from the Lodger and Scary Monsters era. Graham Coxon's guitar solo lands somewhere between Fripp and Belew as well. It's one of the band's most 80s sounding songs.

The deceptively sweet title belies what misery lurks on the streets of London. The list of things that London loves starts with "the mystery of a speeding car" and goes downhill from there to "the misery of a speeding heart", "the way people just fall apart" and "the way you just don't stand a chance". The song fades out to a recording of a London traffic report.

Live on Channel 4 (1994)

We never did make it to New Mexico. Neil ended up rearranging his schedule so he could make a quick trip to cool, gray San Francisco before his wife starts school.

We saw them briefly tonight before they headed out to meet some friends. We'll spend more time together this weekend. My heart is full.

The unveiling of Freewill as Higgins' #3 Rush song means that at least one of 2112, YYZ or Red Barchetta will not be in his top 31, to which I can only say

But what do I know. My top 31 Rush is likely to contain 8 songs that don't appear in Higgins' top 31 OR in Ghost Rider's top 50.
Actually, I totally effed up. I didn't put in the time in making my list that this exercise deserved, especially as a big Rush fan. I simply opened the wiki Rush discography page and rattled out a list -- I clearly didn't double check. I apologize to fellow Rush fans for not taking this more seriously -- life simply got in the way. Again, I apologize.
My man, you're picking 31 from an artist with a really deep catalog. I was damned near in tears for some of the Stevie Wonder songs I left off of my list.

My favorite #3's:

Dance On A Volcano- Genesis
Josie - Steely Dan
Glosoli - Sigur Ros
WaltzinBlack - The Stranglers
In The Hall Of The Mountain King - ELO
Keep Yourself Alive - Queen
Thunderstruck - AC/DC ⚡
Pounding - Doves
The Sound Of Silence - S&G
Out In The Street - Bruce Springsteen
The Veldt - dead 🐭

Green Day, oy vey, will I get my top pick for them or was it eschewed? I consider it also the Perfect Green Day track. Again, one of their top two seems obvs, the other is a ?
There will be snubs. Some have already been spoiled. Several others have not. Some intentional, but others were tough cuts.

10 (I like more than this) new to me #4s I like a lot

The Regulator
The Cedar Room
Mythological Beauty
Slapped Actress
Viðrar vel til loftárása
Pieces
When the **** Hits the Fan
Can I Sit Next to You
The French Inhaler
Angel, Won't You Call Me?

#3 Swing The Heartache

i enjoyed highlighting the tightness and dexterity of the musicianship earlier on ... there are any number of off-brand themes they explored, and i tried to fit them in as snugly as possible, all while maintaining a list of what i consider to be true favorites.

however, as we inch closer to the finish line, it are the heavier and sludgier and more thematic offerings that take center stage ... case in point with this one, which wears "Goth" as proudly as "Hollow Hills" and "Bela".

this shift in tone also shifts the spotlight heavily to Peter and Danny, who shine out here in such amazing clarity ... the vitriolic anguish dripping outta Pete's murderous lyrics are achingly akin to the same contemptuous stylings of the earlier featured "Crowds" - he could hit this camp/vamp acidic note like nobody's biz - few frontmen ever embodied their band's essence as well as Murph ...

Out of her mouth it came as no surprise
Lipstick stained on whipcream lies
I feel that if I had been uglier
It would have been easier

There it sat, blinked and spat
In a black feather hat
And said "the rat"

one of my favorite lyric passages of all time ... open for interpretation, but when i called on it in the past, it served as the catalyst to imbue my muse with the deafening emptiness of ambivalence, if not outright disgust.

a huge Danny flex, as are becoming the norm as we inch up the ladder ... this are an unrelenting piercing ... death by 1,000 paper cuts - but then he crunches riffs amidst that punishing wall of sound, and those paper cuts morph into rapier plunges - if "She's In Parties" were his most expressive; then this are his most evocative ... stamping himself as one of the most innovative and crucial guitarists of not only that era, or of only post-punk, but for the ages. i am forever in love with this guy's talent and fearlessness.

the Haskin bros take a back seat simply by attrition - the two frontmen are hitting it so hard, that the bros get lost in the tsunami ... but then you are pounded with Kevin's mind numbing metronome beats, and David's accompanying thumps - yeoman work to keep that bottom as mesmerizing as the fireworks up front.

the coda, with Peter wailing over Danny's creepily crying chords, is just about as mind blowing as music has ever sounded to me - always need a smoke or two after a sit with this ... an exquisite aural sculpture, pure orgiastic theater.

Really loved this one

I can't believe how good some of these Taylor Swift songs are. They sound nothing like the pop songs I associate her with.
Same- I am officially now a Swiftee.
I am too but I’ve noticed that 95% or so of the songs I love are from the last 3 albums: Folklore, Evermore, and Midnights. I can’t really get into her earlier stuff outside of a few of the pop hits. But the 3 albums I mentioned, particularly the first 2, are as good as any albums I’ve heard in around 40 years.

The Hold Steady “Realistic” Dream Setlist Song 29: Hot Fries

All your favorite books, they wouldn't seem so well written
If you were just a little bit more well read
Hey, Jack Kerouac’s dead
He drank himself to death
And I just, I just ain't that high

Album: B-side (song 3 of 3)

Year: 2004

# of Times Seen Live: never

The Story: Hot Fries is my THS white whale, and I honestly doubt I’ll ever get it - played just 14 times overall and only once since 2011. Craig wrote it in 2003, a few months before Elliot Smith died, which fans surmise keeps them from playing it very much given the “Elliot Smith seems like a mess to me” lyric. That kind of mean-spiritedness - unusual for THS - tracks through most of the song, as its protagonist follows his girlfriend (Holly) to California and watches her cheat on him with a Cali-bro and then get strung out opiates and crack. So maybe Charlemagne has his reasons for being mean and pissed off.

I finally listened to the #4 playlist.

Excluding my own song, I already knew that I liked these songs:
  • Police - Walking On The Moon
  • SRV - Little Wing
  • Rush - Subdivisions
  • Alice In Chains - Nutshell
  • AC/DC - Highway to Hell
  • Elton John - Your Song
Once I listened to them, I realized I knew and liked these songs, just didn't remember them by name:
  • Steely Dan - Deacon Blues
  • Chicago - I'm a Man
  • ELO - Shine a Little Love
On first listen to this playlist, these were the unfamiliar songs I liked the best:
  • Brandi Carlile - Pride and Joy
  • Decemberists - Angel, Won't You Call Me?
  • Sigur Rós - Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása
  • Daft Punk - Around the World
  • Ray Charles - Busted
  • Doves - The Cedar Room
  • Spoon - Can I Sit Next to You
  • deadmau5, Kaskade - Move For Me
Best playlist yet.

I have been putting the songs I identify in these posts in a spreadsheet. I'm up to 251 songs. So far that group of songs includes at least one song from 41 of the 45 artists in the countdown other than mine.

1989 is an absolute masterpiece.

Yeah - 1989 and Red are two that I would add to the list.

A few comments on random #3s

The Sound of Silence - Ever since I was a youngster, this song has always been my go to meditation/escape song. It's my old friend. According to this site, the #1 song on the day I was born was The Sound of Silence. I've seen another site that says it was We Can Work It Out by the Beatles. Maybe they are both right.
Living on A Thin Line - This one is a favorite that I had on my British Isle list.
Superstition - Superstition is super duper.
Freewill - If you chose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
Waltz#2 - This is one of my favorites and I like the outro.
Lawyers, Guns and Money - ⚖️ 🔫 and :moneybag:
Thunderstruck - ⚡ Thunder!
Out In the Street - This makes me fondly think of a guy named John Miracle. He was friends with my friend I'd visit in Cape May in the summer in the early 80s. He always played this album.
London Loves - Dig this song and album.
Would? - I've enjoyed listening to all these AIC songs. Some I've known and haven't heard in forever, and some I'd never heard at all.
Beginnings - Dig that percussion at the end of Beginnings.
I'll Stick Around - I love this one by the Foos. I like Grohl's voice during the verses and the song rocks.
Da Funk - Daft Punk bringing the funk.
Party of One - Purty song
Swing the Heartache - I like the word "theater" otb used at the end of his writeup. This song is like dark theater.
Inland Sea - This song took me on a cool vibe ride.
In the Hall of the Mtn. King - I like this instrumental.
Waltzinblack - I like the music in this one too. Are those munchkins I hear in the background?
Masterpiece - I like the female and male voices together on this one.
Fluffhead - Fluff needs to hook me up with his banker.
Hot Fries - Those first notes make me think of Dude Looks Like a Lady.
Black Like Me - Aw yeah
Sometimes I Don't Know What To Feel - Like his voice on this one.
(And Now the Waltz) - C'est Le Vie - Slade is good at ballads too.
The Veldt - This has a smoothness about it.

I saw a band last Friday (not yesterday) called The Veldt. NCCU puts on a summer concert series in the park in Durham and The Veldt played. The band is from Raleigh. They were good, and were sorta like shoegaze soul sometimes and other times like indie soul/rock.

I saw them open for Living Colour in 1990. They didn't have any albums out yet. Their set was louder and more obviously influenced by Bad Brains than the material that ended up on their records.

David Lindley's lap steel work on this one is brilliant. In concert, he would introduce this one thusly: "I wrote this one for that whistledick "Freebird" guy who shows up at every concert."
Longtime friend David Letterman (Zevon would replace Paul Shaffer as bandleader occasionally) said of Zevon "The only pop singer to ever include the word brucellosis in a song."

Taylor SwiftJpalmerWould've Could've Should've

Like many of you, this is the first time I've really listened to T.Swift. Really liking a lot of it.

When @Jpalmer sent me her List (which is in chronological order), I listened to Evermore.

Here's the list of songs I sent her I liked from the album back on 5/16.
Here are the songs I liked:
the lakes
champagne problems
coney Island
Evermore
Better Man
I Bet You Think about me
All too well
Maroon
Question... ???
High Infidelity
Glitch

Can't say it enough @simey . I'm so glad you participated and gave us all these treasures.
This is way up there on the "God, I wish I could sing like that" list for me.

#2 "Front Line"

The best song about the Viet Nam war & its aftermath ever. It starts with this odd, agitated guitar line. You're kind of wondering where he's going with this until it gets to the "got my legs shot off" part. After that, it's like a Stephen King novel set to music. This is not a fun song. The whole performance is jarring - it's mixed weirdly and Stevie's vocal is off-kilter - but it may be one of his finest.
