Middle Aged Dummies!! Artists #1's have been posted!! (7 Viewers)

I am pretty excited about the upcoming Dino song on #28 playlist. There are a few songs that have grown on me more or affected me more after I finalized the list. A "true" ranking today would have it in the top 15 for sure. Of the first 5 songs this one is most firmly in the "my" Dino Jr camp as far as the sound that fed my soul the most over the past month+.

I think it was being moved down initially because the solo wasn't long enough compared to others. :lol:

I'll write more about their live performances later, but after seeing them in 2000 when they seemed to be fading I left that show saying to myself they're not done yet. Sometimes I'm right.

My number is only 4 - them^^^ 3x, Foo Fighters 2x, Bruce 3x, and Elton (once).

I forgot that I did see Green Day - although it was a three song mini-concert at Halftime of a Jets/Ravens MNF game.
 
Re the 30's...

Both Redesigning Women and One for the Vine are a little too far out of my comfort zone for a heart, but they were both surprisingly pleasant listens. Maybe I like Phil more than I thought a week ago and he's gonna get some hearts as we work our way through this thing. Belinda's striking me as the sort of country that will get some adds as we work our way through as well.

I got a feeling I'm gonna be praising Modest Mouse, Trail of the Dead, Slade, and Clutch throughout so probably best to just assume they get a heart. Other highlights from this list - Tragically Hip's Springtime In Vienna (that was awesome), S&G's Somewhere They Can't Find Me (surprised I'm not familiar with this song), and Big Thief's Red Moon (the vocal stole the show).

There's a tenuous connection between Pip's #29 and The Pointer Sisters. Was wondering if you might have gone down a little bit of a Chicago rabbit hole and stumbled upon the Sisters. Not that you couldn't nominate them in their own right.

Yes. The specific song didn’t make my 31, but the Pointer Sisters sing backup on a song from Chicago VII, the same album that Wishing You Were Here comes from.

I'm not surprised by the love for New Orleans is Sinking in this thread, especially on the part of the people who are hearing it for the first time or haven't in a while. It is a classic song with some great guitar work and amazing vocals. I think over time I've just worn out a bit on it.

It might be their biggest song, I don't think it's their best but I understand a lot of people would have it top 5/top 10. I just feel like I've heard it so many times over the years, I guess it's lost some impact.

I really liked the guitar work and I thought I might have heard the song before -- or perhaps the guitar part used as background somewhere.
 
My thoughts on the #29s (in plinkozilla playlist order)

Blur - Pip says Damon sounds like Paul Weller. For me, this is him at his most Billy Brag
The Prodigy - about as industrial as techno can get.
Ray Charles - Thank you, thank you, thank you, @simey. Growing up in a house filled with Hank Williams, I always loved the original, and Ray absolutely owns it.
The Stranglers - meant to write this on the #30s, but I never heard All Day... until someone pointed out that 2 Live Crew's One and One was based on a famous Kink's song.*
Heart - could serve as a prototype for 80s power ballads. I always thought the Wilson sisters should license it for a mortgage company commercial - "How do I get you a loan?"
Modest Mouse - Dramamine has always been one of my favorites.
Clutch - those horns, tho
Deadmaus - loved the electro feel. Afrika Bambaataa would approve.


* In high school, I sent my girlffriend a joking note with the lyrics to One and One transcribed. Of course, her mom found it and thought it was for reals. That was an uncomfortable conversation (especially, the 9 and 9 part).

one of me exes had graduted herself to one of the City's premier "IT" gurlz of the goff scene at that time ... there were a snippet of the crowd arriving, etc. that used to be available on YouTube - no dice now.

anyways, she got her lovely kisser up in that montage, and it were a well earned nod to her melencholy magnificence ... she were nothing short of stunning.

me? nah.

i missed it - part of that were due to me eschewing the whole poseur scene that i believed she were running with (hey, it were a coping mechanism at the time), and another part were my souring on Murphy - and i'll leave that kettle o'fish alone to fester.

but, COTdamn did they deliver - i hear tell it were as sickeningly stupendous as any gig they ever performed - i mean, the band (Ash/J/Haskins) are absolutely phenomenal, a very overlooked trio ... i did get to look at them when they came around to Giants Stadium as Love n' Rockets ... i say "look" because i were waaayyyy too far gone on blow and Jack to understand or comprehend a damn thing. it were hot, tho - August of '89 - hot. and no effin' shade, as were the perils of that venue.

wish i'd stayed sober for them and the Pixies and headliners the Cure ... earlier said goff princess were me steady for that gig, and the fallout were one of the reasons that we went kaput.

but we looked goodt doin' it.

I wish. Alas, it was in Disney of all places (the House of Blues in Orlando). My wife is from Orlando and we would try to book trips down there to align with shows for the free babysitting. Bauhaus and Disney seems like quite the juxtaposition, but throughout college, Goth Days at the park were always a huge deal. The scene is strong in the sunshine state.

Anyway, they put on a hell of a show. Feel dumb that I've never gotten around to seeing them again.

# of Times Seen Live: 1 of 4 shows (only counting shows since the album was released)

The Backstory: After starting with a couple of ragers from the first two albums, seems like a good spot in the setlist to drop a newer tune. At least in the first half of last decade, it seemed like THS may call it quits any minute and, in a lot of cases, the music really reflected the disharmony (and not in a good way. more on that later). Spices (and the album that spawned it) continued the band's resurgence from those doldrums, pushing into new sounds without eschewing what made fans love them. The first verse of Spices would have felt at home on any of their first few records and the callbacks in the lyrics to Easter, resurrections, bartenders, and illicit meetups was part of a throughline all the way back to the beginning. But then the horns and the chorus come in and the band sounds reinvigorated with fresh ideas and, dare I say, a bit of funkiness.

Live Notes: Beginning a few years ago, "The Horn Steady" (Stuart Bogie and Jordan McLean) started coming in from the wings at certain shows to play trumpet and saxophone - a great addition when they are able to join in.

My #28 Brandi Carlile song is back in the country vein and the first off a proper BC album, Bear Creek. It is the most country of their seven studio albums...we'll see how it goes down for everyone.

Damon Albarn Song #29

Blur - "Under the Westway" non-album single (2012)

Blur broke up for the first time in 2002. Guitarist Graham Coxon left the group during the recording of the Think Tank album, only appearing on a couple of tracks. Albarn continued with Gorillaz and other projects. They got back together in 2009 to play some festival dates but didn't record any new music at the time. They were next heard from in 2012 when this single (b/w/ "The Puritan") was releasd in advance of their huge Hyde Park concert to mark the close of the London Olympics.

"Under the Westway" is a stately chorusless number showing Classic Rock influences to the Beatles and Procol Harum. An earlier version of the song featured more synths, a quicker tempo and a short song-within-a-song section that was discarded for the final release. I think the epic arrangement of the single is a better fit with the sadness of the lyrics that even a final alleluia doesn't alleviate.

The Westway is an elevated freeway in West London. You may have been on if you've taken a taxi from Heathrow to Central London. It's mentioned in another Blur song as well.

Thoughts on the #29s here. I will just continue to echo the praises about the quality of music thrown in these mixes so far. There are several bands that I wrote down (Zevon, SRV, Heart, Hold Steady, and others) that all 3 rounds have had a song that was right at the edge of playlist add, but I am really really liking. There are also artists I know a bit of that have an upward climb to get on a playlist - Elton, Rush, The Kinks and a couple others are just not my thing. That said, there was an Elton song in the last adventure that was one of my favorite discoveries, so I am keeping an open mind.

Brandi Carlile/Alicia Keys - A Beautiful Noise What a beautiful song, and now that I realized I didn't just type Belinda Carlisle I am very confused.
Modest Mouse - Dramanine I hear a bit of Can here. Love the loping guitar vibe here.
Genesis - Dodo/Lurker My favorite of the trio. Taps into my horror roots and oh my that groove that starts at :25.
Green Day - Brat here we go. I will admit, you lost me a bit with the opener, but we are on board again.
Daft Punk - Veridis Quo I don't like rock instrumentals, but it seems I lean towards liking my electronic sans vocals or with minimal involvement.
Ryan Adams - Kim One of my favorites of the round. Love the solo and tone of the guitar here mixed with the drivng beat at the core.

Spoon - Wild
Foo Fighters - Let it Die I guess just repeat my love from yesterday for this one and the 3 before it. Great stuff all around.

The Tragically Hip - New Orleans is Sinking holy **** the guitar here.
AC/DC - Riff Raff See Above. I think I would listen to AC/DC a lot more if the drumming didn't bore me so much. I wasn't familar with this one to my knowledge and it cooks.
deadmau5 - Ghosts 'n' Stuff My least favorite of the 3, but this was one of the songs that got the 🎧 bump.

I just gave “New Orleans Is Sinking” the listen I promised earlier today. My impressions are in line with Pip’s and Doc’s — that was some major-league riffage.

I didn’t expect the Hip’s singer to have so much twang. I thought it was a weird put-on initially — but the more I listened, the more that twang worked.

Question: Would the Tragically Hip have been blowing up all over Canada at about the same time? And if so, would proximity to Vancouver have introduced the early Seattle Scene bands to the Hip’s first few singles? “New Orleans Is Sinking” is not itself grunge … but it seems to have some of the ingredients that went into the eventual grunge sound. Kind of a frenetic energy, most notably.

Right... I'm likely seeing at least a bit of Pixies this weekend as well. Their set overlaps with Paramore though and that's an easy decision for me - I think combining overall setlist + quality of newer albums Paramore might be my #1 show of the whole weekend, though I'm anticipating Foo Fighters more since I've never seen them and I've seen Paramore in 2009 (Brand New Eyes tour, pop punk era) and 2018 (After Laughter tour, 80s pop era). Maybe I should do Paramore next :wub:

My buddy from here who I'm driving with and Tasker are both big Hip fans so I'll try to get some commentary from them on my upcoming songs.

In case it isn't obvious, I am getting very excited.

The Decemberists
#28 Raincoat Song

Part of a 3 vinyl single set released under the "Always The Bridesmaid" shared title, Raincoat Song is the Decemberists in their more melodic, simple form (i.e., it's not part of a larger work (e.g., The Tain, The Crane Wife or Hazards of Love)).

You could read the song two ways:
(1) tale of a rainy day ("the raincoat you wore when it rained today/ I think it only made it rain more"), or
(2) a character study of Caroline, a 28 year old "spinster"
Caroline is upset that, at this time in her life, she is not yet in a serious relationship.

You couldn't catch a cold

Likely part of the extended rain metaphor: Caroline worries that, without her "raincoat" (defensiveness), she will "catch a cold" (be hurt) from the "rain" (personal interactions). Alternatively or additionally, it could be a hyperbolic reference to her failure to "catch" a romantic partner.

I think it only made it rain more

The principal metaphor of the song. When she goes out in the rain—that is, the difficult world of social interactions—Caroline wears a raincoat: she adopts a psychologically defensive attitude. But the raincoat makes it rain more: that is, her defensive attitude makes it even more difficult for her to enter a meaningful relationship.

This refers to the love-causing arrows shot by the mythological Cupid, who is here conflated with cherubim due to their similar appearance in many paintings.

I like Spices a lot. There are probably only two songs I would really consider "essential" from Open Door Policy, will be interested to see if you're second from the album is the same as mine.
 
I remembered I’ve seen Foos thrice, the first time was at the HFStival 98?? with Green Day who stole the show which is why I forgot. Also saw Foos at the Black Cat which was a tough ticket to get and super awesome, and at Patriot Center/George Mason whatever they’re calling it these days. That show was opened by Cave In - and I am a Stephen Brodsky fan to this day - and Tim Armstrong’s Transplants which was an interesting project

ToD’s Intelligence isn’t getting much love, not surprising I guess, it took me 20 years to warm up to. Todays track is part 2 of a two part piece, of which we’ll get the first part next week. Strap on your waltzing shoes.

As for me, I haven’t been able to soak in the entire 29 set, out here in northern Ohio yet. I fear might fall behind this week until I can get home and hopefully look at a restful weekend
