This is the 6th track on the Kinks’ concept album, Soap Opera (aka The Kinks Present a Soap Opera). This is my only song on the list from Soap Opera even though I really like the album. As is the case with many concept albums, the songs were not intended to exist in isolation. I encourage everyone to listen to the whole album if you have not done so already. Soap Opera tells the story of a musician, Starmaker, who trades places with an “ordinary man”, Norman. As the lyrics show, there is a lot of heavy sh!t to deal with in life…perhaps more alcohol is the remedy? Ray Davies certainly had his issues with alcohol over the years. But all problems aside, damn this song is catchy as hell.

Heartbreaker was Ryan's first solo effort after leaving Whiskeytown, and although I came around to it a little later than 2000, it's now one of my favorite albums (would be in Top 31 if we did this for albums).

Winding Wheel is probably the most accessible of Adams' songs I've chosen so far. Perhaps a little more country rock (in the tradition of the Byrds) than alt-country the song incorporates a nice, twangy guitar solo and a touch of organ. Adams on most of his records puts his worn out smoker damaged vocals up front with little reverb or overdubbing. I'm not sure I'd call him a great vocalist, but he sure knows how to carry a song.

Side story about Yellow Brick road and my artist Elliott Smith.

When I read William Todd Schulz's Elliott Smith biography Torment Saint last year, I was struck to learn that Smith harbored a borderline-unhealthy fascination with this song. That same moment, the sudden, temporary leap into A-flat major, had pierced his imagination. As the Flaming Lips' Steven Drozd told Schulz, "My fondest and most disturbing memory of [Smith] was when we did ecstasy together one night… 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' came on and he started bawling his eyes out." Mark Flanagan, the owner of L.A.'s Largo club, recalls that Smith once listened to "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" for 18 straight hours, high on mushrooms.

Was randomly watching the King of Comedy this evening and forgot it was Ray Charles' Come Rain or Come Shine over the opening credits. Probably not on your 31 but again, what a tough time whittling that list down must have been.

Genesis took me back. I bought that album when it came out back in the day.

Interesting to see one of my favorite Modest Mouse songs come in at 28.

I didn't sequence them by rank---my #31 and #29 are in my top 5-7 favorites.

I tried to sequence them for playlist purposes. This would've been a bit higher if I was ranking, but not by a lot. Still a great song.

I kinda wish I'd just listed them by rank.

28 - Sigur Ros - Ísjaki (Iceberg) - Kveikur - 2013

At this point in the countdown through to about the beginning of the top 10, this is less a ranking of least to most favorite. A lot of the songs in this range are all what I would consider "good" and are more or less ranked equally. The order is mostly my attempt to try and keep a variety of styles from day to day.

This one comes off their latest album, Kviekur from 2013. This album was fairly dark and aggressive, but more rhythmic overall than most previous albums.

This track, however, is an outlier in that it isn't so dark or aggressive. Just a nice catchy tune and one of the poppiest songs they've produced. I particularly like the screeching guitar at the end of the chorus.

There's some thought that this is a(nother) song about Layne. Looking at lyrics like the ones above? It’s a fair call. Though honestly, this is a group where everyone’s struggled with addition in one form or another. The band has stuck to the idea of this being “simply” about the consequences of your actions and leave the rest up to interpretation. I suppose it could be about something as simple as, to pick a random example, peeking at a Spotify list early.

Interesting Points
1) To say The Stranglers experimented here would be an understatement. It drove legendary and heroin loving producer Martin Rushent to storm out of recording sessions never to be seen again
2) Permanently grumpy frontman Hugh Cornwell was prompted to say shortly afterwards “We're never going to use a producer again. They are just ****ty little parasites. All they're good for is telling jokes. And we know better jokes than any of 'em.
3) They were colloquially known as the men in black up until then. Their next album took it one step further and was called “The Gospel according to the Meninblack”
4) Heroin use was rife for Cornwell and JJB at this point leading to strange creative moments like this one. Its “feeling” was later used to great effect on their biggest hit Golden Brown.
5) This isnt the strangest Stranglers track. That is still to come, but it gave them a taste for not being afraid to try new things.

Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) may have been Green Day's biggest left turn, but it's never been their acoustic number that does it for me so anyone looking forward to it will need to queue it up on their own. It's a good song, but Macy's Day Parade is what sends chills up my spine. I have always been more drawn to this introspective melancholy cut about over coming obstacles developing an identity in a world driven by consumerism. I've mentioned many times before that I'm sound first and lyrics a distant second, so while standard operating procedure held firm with this one the lyrics connected a lot quicker with this one than normal.

I actually can't stand Time of your Life, but like Green Day in general. This was a much better acoustic.

Side note: I’m going to green light a paranormal Netflix series called something like From Genesis, with episodes based on different weird Genesis songs (more to come).

This one is more of a sentimental pick for me. This was the most played song from my first Genesis album (since the other biggies all got more radio play). Also, if you include the attached Second Home By The Sea, this serves as a bridge between their pop rock stuff and their Prog stuff.

#28 - Ray Charles - The Right Time aka (Night Time Is) The Right Time - Spotify

Brother Ray recorded this song as a single back in 1958, and it is on his 1961 album The Genius Sings the Blues. It is also on a couple live albums.

This song is a bluesy soul romper with Ray on the electric piano and vocals. Fathead Newman is the one who kicks the song off on sax, and Ms. Margie Hendrix is the Raelette that gets lead vocal on part of the song.

I made it through the 31s yesterday. Great playlist.

Like shuke, there are a few artists that I assume I'm going to like/love all of their songs because they're some of my favorites: Elliott Smith, Spoon, Dino Jr., Big Thief, The Kinks, The Decemberists, Ryan Adams, Doves, Frank Black, Bauhaus, Blur and The Hold Steady.

I'm pretty familiar with most of the other artists. The only ones I've heard less than a lot from are The Stranglers, Jorge Ben, Phish, Clutch, deadmau5 and Brandi Carlile.

I liked all the songs on this list---none were skipped except the ones I already knew well. Of those I knew less well, my favorites were by Clutch, Todd Rundgren, Trail of Dead and Chicago.


On to the 30s. I'm afraid I'm going to remain fairly far behind on these.

I have a fond memory of this song. My oldest nephew played this song on acoustic guitar during his 8th grade graduation program. The kids sang behind him and he was in the front sitting on a chair with his guitar. He played it perfect. He was so nervous about doing it, but he did it, and I was proud of him.

Was randomly watching the King of Comedy this evening and forgot it was Ray Charles' Come Rain or Come Shine over the opening credits. Probably not on your 31 but again, what a tough time whittling that list down must have been.

I'm sure everyone had a tough time whittling their list down, but I'm not sure why you would think one way or another on what is or is not on my 31 list.
