RushhigginsWitch Hunt
The Rush songs listed up until now have been very solid, deeper in the catalog cuts that as a Rush fan, I appreciate and I have to admit I am very entertained by @higgins selections thus far.

Witch Hunt, on the other hand, is a classic, front of the line Rush tune from Moving Pictures, probably their best known album. One of the aspects I enjoy so much about the song is the heavy music to lyrics ratio. Clocking in at a very manageable length of 4:46, there aren't really that many words in the song, and Geddy certainly does not shriek them. The lyrics are interesting, tough to deny their accuracy, but the musical parts in the song are what do it for me. They recorded the song using a variety of instruments, and the musical chops of all three band members really show out on this one.

As Pip's mentioned upthread, Witch Hunt is part of a trilogy of songs known as the "Fear" trilogy, to which they added a fourth song later in their career. I'm a big fan of that trilogy, but even I have to admit Witch Hunt is the standout among those songs, IMO it's not really close. Many Rush fans will cite Witch Hunt among their favorites from a deep catalog, so it's really great to see it in the countdown here.

I really dug Raincoat Song and wasn't expecting that the raincoat made it rain more.

The "I am the monster" line is by far the most memorable thing about Insatiable (Two).

Have Another Drink may be the closest the Kinks ever got to a hoedown.

On first glance, only knew 6 songs from today's list. After listening, and liking, recognized The Holiday Song and Don't You Worry About a Thing. Your Decision already had a heart next to it but didn't recognize by name.
Liked songs by bands I know in playlist order

Aint gonna give up on love
Witch hunt
Macy's day parade
All over the world
Poets - nice deep track I'm glad made the cut
What's this world coming to- great music, sounded like Stevie Wonder

Liked the music of the Stranglers song but not the helium induced vocals.
Thought today's tracks by Jorge Ben Jor, Phish, Sigur Ros, Modest Mouse and Prodigy were the best yet

The Hold Steady “Realistic” Dream Setlist Song 3: Spices

Hadn't really seen her since the previous winter
She'd been a drop dead number since later last December
But here she is rising again, Happy Easter
You wanna go get some beers?

Album: Open Door Policy (#1 of 2)

I like Spices a lot. There are probably only two songs I would really consider "essential" from Open Door Policy, will be interested to see if you're second from the album is the same as mine.
Catching up now. Definitely interested on your take when it appears. I considered four songs from ODP and the one yet-to-be-revealed was the absolute slam dunk.

The Hold Steady “Realistic” Dream Setlist Song 4: The Sweet Part of the City

And now it seems to me
Like distance doesn't equal rate and time no more
It's like gravity doesn't apply
Now everything sparkles and feels like we're on wheels
It was dark, but I guess that's the deal

Album: Heaven is Whenever (1 of 3)

Year: 2010

# of Times Seen Live: 9 of 30 shows (only counting shows since the album was released)

The Story: Keyboardist and all-around showman Franz Nicolay quit the band in 2010 before they recorded Heaven is Whenever* and it’s pretty safe to say most fans were worried about what that would do to the band’s sound. Opening track The Sweet Part of the City raised my expectations immediately - slide guitar, alternate tuning, and almost ethereal sound - sign me up. And then the rest of the record was totally hit-or-miss. Honestly, the first one where I skipped tracks on the regular (and still do). More importantly, the live shows just weren’t the same without Franz working his magic. Luckily, there was a happy reunion a few years down the road.

* Asked why he left, Franz told Paste magazine "In the Hold Steady, I was kind of a fox in a hedgehog band. The Isaiah Berlin thing about the hedgehogs who have one defining idea and the foxes who have a lot of different ideas. So this is going to let me indulge a lot of those different ideas." Yikes.

ChicagoPip's InvitationWhat's This World Comin' To

Digging the Chicago dive a lot. Will be hitting the record stores soon and making sure I have all the 70's stuff, because everything so far has been great.

SladeMrs. RannousIt Ain't Love But It Ain't Bad

I always saw Slade as a bit goofy, but I'm enjoying this deeper dive as well.

SpoonHov34Do I Have to Talk You Into It

I've liked every Spoon song I've heard.

I liked a lot so far - my biggest enjoyment has been the bands that I like but don't know much beyoind the hits (Chicago, Slade, etc). This thread has been great for that so far (as I knew it would be.)

Damon AlbarnEephusThe Good, the Bad & the Queen --- The Poison Tree
I got an Elvis Costello vibe - the vocals sounded like him at least. I’m going to ask trip to start a poll “Do you like The Good, the Bad & the Queen?”

Round #28 Musings

Aside from lots of songs about Murder and Witches, this was the round of Sounds Like Other Artists On The Playlist.

Todd Rundgren did a Steely Dan song. Chicago did a Stevie Wonder song. Stevie Wonder did a JBJ song. Decembrists did an Elliott Smith song. Stranglers did a Deadmau5 song? Trail of Dead did a Kinks song. Phish did an older Genesis song. Queen did an ELO song. Heart did a Slade song. Poison Tree did a Blur song (I kid). Frank Black and Hold Steady each did different era Bruce songs.

STV song made me want to hang out in the comfy outdoor chair in the back while sipping a cocktail and throwing a ball to the dogs.

ELO song made me feel like I should be at the rollerskating rink with my lady on a summer Saturday night.

My favorites on this list from these artists so far - Slade, Decembrists, Phish, Clutch, Hold Steady, Dinosaur Jr, Daft Punk.

Another great list.

Apologies for the formatting. Doing this from my phone and am pushing my technical capabilities.

29. You Haven’t Done Nothing. Stevie Wonder is the best political and social issues songwriter in pop history. I got blasted in Tim’s Dylan countdown for saying this, but I believe it’s true. Say what you want about Stevie, but he MEANS what he says. I never bought Dylan as holding a stance for any length of time.

28. Don’t You Worry About A Thing. Ever been involved with someone who thought the grass was greener somewhere else? Turn them loose and play this one.

Quick hits:

- I don’t know how or why I’ve missed out on Dino Jr all these years, love what I am hearing so far

- The Hold Steady will never get old to me, they hit all my musical sweet spots

- Daft Punk rules. I’ll just keep saying that over and over and over.
 Is there one of the first 4 you liked the best? Tomorrow will be another tone shift back to the older sound that hasn't come up yet.

Not really. They are 4 for 4 so far. Dig each a lot. For some reason I thought they were quirkier like Pavement. I like Pavement but prefer this much more. I’m excited for this full playlist.

Loved the Clutch tune. Reminded me of some of the louder Ween tunes (yes, I am continuing to compare them) -- I suspect both are influenced by Motorhead.

The Dino Jr. song reminds me of Neil. Of course I'm going to mention when anything reminds me of Neil.

"Living in a four-letter world" -- Zevon had a way with words until the very end.

I knew early Queen could be proggy, but I haven't heard much of it. Very much enjoyed Father to Son, which benefitted greatly from some Brian May riffage.

PhishshukeBilly Breathes

I was hoping this would be more accessible to the Phish haters. Looks like a few of you enjoyed it. People often say that Phish is a band that must be enjoyed live, but Billy Breathes album is an example where that's not true. If you enjoyed this, I'd recommend the album.

It's a song that isn't played live often anymore, so I don't have a good example to do a breakdown.

You've picked the title tracks of the two albums (Billy Breathes and Rift) that IMO can be enjoyed regardless of what you think of their live sound. Both have theming and production that tie all the songs together.

My friend who hates Phish but loves Billy Breathes said the album "sounds like they started to cover The Dark Side of the Moon but then they forgot what they were doing."

First time through I didn't even realize I was listening to Phish. Looking forward to spin #2 tomorrow 👍

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of DeadplinkoInsatiable (Two)
The Century Of Self (2009)

My favorite by them so far. I like it.

The KinksGalileoHave Another Drink (1975 - Soap Opera)

Very fun song.

Green DayMAC_32Macy's Day Parade

I'm not a huge Green Day fan, and am constantly inundated with them because my son is a huge fan. But I really like this.

ChicagoPip's InvitationWhat's This World Comin' To

This is reminding me how cool Chicago was at one point.

Dinosaur Jr.KarmaPoliceSee You

Every time someone posts a song by them I think "I need to listen to them more" but then never do. This thread is going to force me, and I'm not disappointed. Favorited.

Favorited.

:lmao: I think it's an incredible album, definitely top 10 ever for me. Although I think Character Zero is misplaced.
Character Zero has a little different vibe from the rest of it, but its inclusion always made sense to me.

Poets may be my favorite Tragically Hip song so far. It sounds like REM but has more urgency than what we usually heard from Stipe and co.

(I really liked the one that was picked in the worldwide countdown, though I suspect we'll see it much later here.)

Well I'm convinced the whole day long that all I learn is always wrong

@Raging weasel , you have sold a Clutch album! We are in. Thank you.

Also, I really didn't think anyone would care about the Slade tunes. I'm very glad some of you like them.
Nice! Have you started listening to their stuff on your own or just liked all you've heard so far?
My next 5 picks feature a couple more style/sound changes including their early punk metal days so may lose luster for some.
Also enjoying your Slade picks, knew very little of them before this .

For whatever reason, maybe just my mood when I listened, but the 28's didn't do all that much for me. I did enjoy the following quite a bit

The World at Large - Modest Mouse - that's at least 2 of theirs that I have saved for future play.
Dirty Life and Times - WZ - Same as above. I believe that's 3 actually. (y)
Do I Have to Talk You Into It - Spoon. Again, there's multiple Spoon songs so far that I've enjoyed
Poets - The Tragically Hip - Probably my 3rd favorite Hip song behind New Orleans is Sinking and one other that I'm sure we'll hear later.

On one hand, the 28's were my 2nd favorite playlist of this countdown. On the other hand, the 28's would have been my favorite playlist on any of those we've done prior. That's just a testament to how strong the 31's were. Highlights:

*Like the 31's Chicago stole this show.
*I didn't think Heart would provide any new music to my library. I like what I like and I don't what I don't. But it took just 4 songs to prove that theory wrong. The Witch was a banger.
*For different reasons I wondered if this journey through Foo Fighters would end up with any new hearts and that happened with this one. Makes sense as I lack familiarity with their post In Your Honor material. I've always been a sucker for 2 songs in 1 and this one nailed it.
*As I mentioned from the outset I am really looking forward to littering my library with Clutch. This was the best one yet. The very rarest...of our enemies...style and grace...altogether...our vesuvian...style and grace.
*Special shout out Krista style to Billy Breathes. As I mentioned earlier I didn't even realize this was Phish until the guitar picked up in the final minute.
*Brandi Carlile got a 2nd heart in a row - gimme more of this type of country.
*Not always, but Slade is giving me some The Sweet vibes. This is a good thing and may be horribly off base as I am very new to both bands.
*Big Thief and Daft Punk also got hearted, but that's quickly becoming standard operating procedure. Several others I may circle back around to and add one later too - helluva list.

Unexpected day off today so I'm hoping to get through a couple playlists while watching R1 of the US Open.

The 30s:
Another strong list but not as good as the 31s for me. A few favorites (sans my usuals):

Truth Hits Everybody---not a radio hit from them so I wasn't as familiar with it. Like it a lot.
Opera Obscura---I mentioned earlier that I pretty much have only listened to ST&C. Gonna have to remedy that.
Wading in the Velvet Sea---I've never really listened to Phish. Liked this one and I'm looking forward to the full playlist at the end of this exercise.
Telephone Line---my parents used to play this frequently. It brings back some good memories for me....nostalgia.
Gone Cold---Clutch is 2/2 for me. Another full playlist I'm looking forward to hearing start to finish.
I Was In The House When The House Burned Down--I'm pretty much only very familiar with Excitable Boy. Not sure why I haven't listened to more of his work.
Somewhere They Can't Find Me--another artist I'm very familiar with but more so from their hits. Enjoying the deep cuts.
Speedway--the only Prodigy I know is from Fat of the Land, which I listened to a ton at the time. I'll have to listen to this album in it's entirety.

We sampled most of Book of Bad Decisions. Groovy. We are waiting to see what comes next.

Yeah, I had to put in a request for Book of Bad Decisions. I had some time to skim the discussion without really listening to much, but after I saw the title "In Walks Barbarella" I simply had to find out what the heck was going on. Loved the funk, and when spotify started the next song on the album it was,,, quite different. Stylistically, these dudes are all over the map - in a good way. So far, I've heard some funk, some blues, a little Sabbath, a little Soundgarden, a little I have no idea what the hell I just listened to but I know it like it ("Gone Cold"). I'll be continuing to tune in here just to see where this rabbit hole goes. Thanks, @Raging weasel !

havent been around in a long time and just found this thread. very fun idea. higgins and yo mama killing it from top to bottom. I love that era of genesis and the rush cuts are in my top tier of about 75 of their tunes. mt man your list is interesting. no layne at all? ok man interesting method to your madness. anything you want from spoon is an all timer. nicely done.

Bryan Adams is playing in Cleveland tonight, there are a bunch of stans here at my corner bar. Quite a rowdy crew. I’m calling dibs for Dock Ock to do him next

There was a band on my suburban block the other day, which was odd. (My neighborhood is not a block party neighborhood. It has a strict HOA. For another time, I suppose.) Anyway, I could hear them clear as a bell in my yard. For some odder reason than existing and being in my neighborhood, they busted into "Heaven" and the crowd all started singing along. I thought it was supremely odd at that point. First off, to be in a band and decide to learn to play Bryan Adams's "Heaven." Secondly, for the crowd to start singing along.

Maybe a resurgence in the old balladeering career of Bryan Adams???

I dunno...
