15. Ray Charles - Let's Go Get Stoned - spotify 🍸🚬

As mentioned a few days ago, Ray was arrested in 1964 at an airport in Boston for possession of pot and heroin. The case dragged in court, and in 1965 he decided to avoid jail by checking into rehab and kicking his heroin habit. When he was released on probation, he kept a low profile the rest of the year while recording music. He was known as a perfectionist, but also for having a sense of humor. In early 1966, he returned to the spotlight and released the album Crying Time, and his first single off of it was "Let's Go Get Stoned." The Raelettes joined in as did Billy Preston on the Hammond B3. This was his first album he released on his own Tangerine label (named after his favorite fruit).

This is soooo good.

The word stool reminds me of visiting a friend at her grandma's house in Morehead City. I had just finished my orientation at ECU, and my friend from high school (who was also going to be attending ECU) was visiting her grandma on the coast. I drove there after my orientation to meet her. Her grandma lived on the sound, and they called her Honey. Anyway, her uncle was there one day, and he was going to take us gigging later on. All of a sudden I heard this loud old woman's voice scream, "Put the lid on the stool!" I was thinking WTF. She screamed it like two more times. Turns out her uncle had left the toilet seat up, and Honey sat down on it. She was a bit grumpy, but I did see her smile once when we were gigging, and a little fish jumped into the boat and landed on my friend (her granddaughter) who screamed.

15 - Sigur Ros - Rafstraumur (Electric Current) - Kveikur - 2013

Not much of a writeup for this one. This another "popish" song of theirs, so if you've been more inclined to like those, you'll probably like this one. This comes off their album Kveikur, which as I've said before was a much darker album in sound than their previous stuff. This track however, is sunny, bright, like morning sunshine coming through a bedroom window [/pretentious]

had a particularly ill-tempered kitty some 30 yrs ago when i were living on w4th with my (then) gf ... we got the lil' fella at a shelter (Humane Society?), and kid had the hugest fangs i ever saw on a wee feline.

he also crapped like a horse, frequency-wise, and also as indiscriminately ... she named him Rocky, but i changed it to "Drac-stool-a"

... and that's all i got on the stool front.

For Once in My Life is one of Stevie's most showbizzy tunes, but his vocal is utterly convincing.
#15 - "For Once In My Life"

It is. I wonder, though, if we feel that way because it's been recorded by so many others in a Vegas Cabaret style.

Because that rhythm guitar is playing straight-up Motown, as are the drums. The lead guitar - especially on the intro - is playing the blues. The piano part - not by Stevie, IIRC - is doing all kinds of churchy things. And James Jamerson's bass playing is from another universe. Cool flute in there, too. Stevie's vocals sound like he's about to jump out of his skin.

I thought for more decades than I care to admit to that this was a Wonder original, but it was recorded by a bunch of people before Stevie got hold of it (including some other Motown acts). He owns it so thoroughly, though, that it became a "Stevie Wonder" song.

15.
The Biggest Lie- Elliott Smith
from Self titled Album

"You turned white like a saint
I'm tired of dancing on a pot of gold-flaked paint
Oh, we're so very precious, you and I
And everything that you do makes me want to die
Oh, I just told the biggest lie"

The Biggest Lie is the closing song on what is probably my favorite Smith album. It was also my "first" favorite Elliott song. The lyrics are gold from start to finish. Elliott’s completely defeated then cracking vocals combined with the soft regretful melody just make it so strong. Even the little guitar solo in the middle is money. It's just 2:40 of perfection. Although I have moved on to other" favorites" this one holds a special place for some personal reasons.

I know I've done a lousy job commenting on songs but I've enjoyed all your write ups a great deal. I will be on vacation all next week and dont know if I will get back here much, if at all. But I will have some write ups ready upon return.

Probably among Simon's angriest lyrics for sure - pretty out of character for an otherwise mellow, pensive guy.
I like angry Paul.
Makes him feel 5 feet tall.
I wore stacks as dress shoes in the late '70s. I don't think even those would get him to 5' - plus, his little elf-feet would probably slip out of them anyway.
A guy in junior high wearing platforms accidentally stepped on my big toe, and I was wearing sandals. It was the first time I'd have a toenail turn blue and fall off.

But not the last?
No. I've lost a toenail from injury 4 times. One was platform dude stepping on me, another was accidentally stabbing my toe with a shovel (I had on a shoe) when digging, another was walking in full stride barefooted and hitting my toe on the leg of an iron table (broke that toe), and another was running in from the ocean and hitting my toe on a rock that was covered by the water.

Genesis #15 - Turn It On Again

Album - Duke
Year - 1980

My favorite of the group’s more radio friendly, pop rock songs. It is more complex than most of their singles, which is probably why I like it so much. I always thought this song would be perfect for a running / workout playlist because it always energizes me so much, but the changes in tempo messes with that. There are quotes from the band that they think it’s funny when fans try to dance to this in concerts because they always stop when the tempo changes.

I’ve always loved this song - musically it’s great, and Phil has so much emotion in his vocals. Plus it’s about a guy who lives his life in front of a TV so it’s easy to connect to.

Each member brought some leftover pieces from other works to make this song.

I haven't been able to gather comments on songs for a bit because we have our in laws here visiting, but I will say one thing. I had the playlist on while cooking last night and everybody made positive comments. This ranges from my 80 year old in laws, to a grumpy reclusive teenager. This has been a really good mix that spans generations.

The Hold Steady “Realistic” Dream Setlist Song 17: Multitude of Casualties

We spent a few months just wandering the Sonoma
High as hell and shivering and smashed
We were trying for a vision quest
We opened up three buttons
And all we saw was desert trash

Album: Separation Sunday (Song 3 of 5)

Year: 2005

# of Times Seen Live: 16 of 39 shows

The Hold Steady is for Women?: When I first starting going to THS shows, I’d say it was a good 80/20 male/female split. Not quite like when I used to see Rush, but as far as lines for the bathrooms go, not really that different either (albeit with less air-drumming). I’m not saying that anyone now is going to confuse it with a Taylor Swift crowd or anything, but I’ve definitely noticed more women and more 20-somethings compared to pre-pandemic crowds. Maybe the new stuff has widened the audience a bit?

Relatedly, I’m a huge fan of the author George Pelecanos (probably more famous at this point for being David Simon’s co-writer on The Wire than his books). His stuff tends to be set in the grittier parts of DC and inhabit some of the old-school scenes (both Go-Go and DC hardcore). In a book from a few years back, the protagonist private investigator goes up to a woman’s house and while questioning her (she's both gorgeous and cool, natch) about a weed delivery, she responds with lines from Multitude of Casualties ("I shipped it out from Boulder, packed in coffee grounds and wrapped around in dryer sheets.” Our hero PI is himself a THS fan, so of course they end up sleeping together. I’ll take things that never would happen in real life for $1000, Alex…

The Hold Steady is for Women is the name of a podcast that I sometimes tune into, depending on the topic that particular episode. The earlier ones focus on the difficulties of being a female fan in a scene that skews the other way, and all the BS gatekeeping and whatnot they put up with. Seeing some of the crap that Mrs. Scorchy has dealt with at shows, good to have those voices out there.

Ma-Ma-Ma Belle

This is a an earlier ELO rocker that does a nice job of mixing guitar and those deep cellos. It was a minor hit for them. I like it but if I were I doing these in order, it would be near the back of the list.
I'm here for the Yo-Yo Ma-Ma-Ma material.

Jorge Ben JorDon QuixoteCharles Junior

Currently in Kauai on last leg of my Hawaii vacation (and listening to some 15s on my hotel patio while reading), but I’ll quickly highlight this one since, as I posted earlier, and others have mentioned, this one is not on Spotify and not on the playlist; so, would need to listen separately on YouTube.

It is from his Fôrça Bruta album, which also featured “Oba, Lá Vem Ela” and “O Telefone Tocou Novamente“, which showed up earlier on my playlist (but those songs have been on compilation albums that are on Spotify). That album has a bit more of the “samba soul” feel with the sweeping orchestra.

Like the mix of the orchestra with a more uptempo guitar groove in this one. It is also a bit less Portuguese centric and does have some “La La La’s” for those who prefer a bit less of the Portuguese.

We've tapped into the elusive grumpy reclusive teenager market! Maybe we are not so dumb after all!

Among the new-to-me songs I liked from the #15s were Jorge Ben Jor, Brandi Carlile, Modest Mouse (seemed too unhinged at first but got more hinged as it went on), the Decemberists (I might have heard this one before), Sigur Ros, Big Thief, Daft Punk, Elliott Smith, Frank Black, Dino Jr., AIC, Bauhaus and The Tragically Hip.

A couple of songs I knew by title but hadn't heard in a long time:

The Kinks' Supersonic Rocket Ship seems musically to be a sequel to Apeman.
ELO's Ma-Ma-Ma-Belle is another example of how determined they were early on to make the classical/rock thing work. IMO they only had one wildly successful track before Showdown, but their attempts were almost always interesting.

#15 - The Stranglers - Bring on the Nubiles

Year - 1977
Album - No More Heroes
UK Chart position - Album Track
Vocals - Hugh Cornwell
Key Lyric - Lemme lemme **** ya **** ya
Lemme lemme **** ya **** ya
Lemme lemme lick your lucky smiles

Interesting Points

1- The band were known to be deliberately provocative. Punching journalists, tying them to the Eiffel tower, and just being general arseholes. This song was poking for a reaction and it got one.

2- With the band already accused of blatant sexism, among other things, this track didn’t exactly help. Taking the bands explanation of the song below with a grain of salt, its hard to refute

3- This is JJB’s take on the song

Bring On The Nubiles was funny and very clever. It was my riff which I nicked off Miles Davis' Bitches Brew album. It's a seminal album as it's the first album where jazz & rock combined. I nicked that bass riff unashamedly. Hugh's slightly tongue in cheek lyrics were very funny and annoyed a lot of feminists all over the world. They took it at face value which so many people did all the time with Stranglers' lyrics. Irony?
4- Heres a wordy and polite explanation of the explicit songs lyrics
Bring on The Nubiles" by The Stranglers is an upbeat, sexually-charged rock song about the singer's untamed desire. The song's protagonist expresses an ardent fascination and undeniable longing for female companionship, describing in detail his intentions of showering his affections onto these young, attractive women, of whom he dubs "nubiles". The singer conveys his sentiment with a mix of poetic imagery, such as "show you things you've never had", and less subtle declarations of lust, such as "I'll kiss your zone erogenous". Ultimately, "Bring on The Nubiles" celebrates the joys of youthful love and sexual exploration, but with a wild, hedonistic edge.
5- Proving the Stranglers have a sense of the ridiculousness, they recorded a jazz cover of their own song and called it Cocktail Nubiles. Its a totally different vibe, but not finished

We get slightly less controversial with the most recent song recorded on my list and that was over 30 years ago.

Foo FightersJust Win BabyHalo

This is the first song I chose from One By One, the Foos' 4th studio album. About the album:

...has been noted for its introspective lyrics and a heavier, more aggressive sound compared to the band's earlier work, which Grohl said was intended to translate the energy of the Foo Fighters' live performances into a recording. This was the first album recorded with Chris Shiflett as part of the band, and the first in which Grohl did not play drums, as drum duties were permanently assigned to Taylor Hawkins...

While in previous records Grohl tried to not get introspective in his lyrics, for One by One he found himself writing lyrics that matched the "emotional level we were hinting with the music"... Grohl described the track listing as "11 tortured love songs", with a major theme of "surrendering to yourself", and a sequencing that described the difficult beginnings of falling in love, and then the relief of feeling comfortable in love. A major inspiration was Grohl's new girlfriend Jordyn Blum, as well as the troubled times with the band, demonstrated in "Times Like These", which laments the absence of the Foo Fighters and ponders about their future. Grohl also described "All My Life", released as a single, as representative of the album's sound for being "much more aggressive" as well as "a little darker, more romantic, creepier than anything we have done".

Dave has described Halo as follows:

"The groove reminds me of Tom Petty, the middle section reminds me of Cheap Trick, the chorus kinda reminds me of Guided By Voices with the is melodic kinda walking-down-the-street rhythm. It's a great driving song. It also reminds me Of 'My Poor Brain' from our second record - but it's ****ing way beyond that."

"Halo, I'm pretty proud of. It's like NoMeansNo meets The Police or something like that."

Todd RundgrenNew Binky the DoormatEverybody Is Going To Heaven/King Kong Reggae

Not exactly one of his more accessible hard rockers, but I picked this one over the more straight-ahead "Heavy Metal Kids" which I also love. Hopefully it didn't chase everyone away!

this album has a bit of everything on it - soft ballads, trippy instrumentals, hard rockin' guitar tunes, and even a Gilbert & Sullivan show tune cover. Note: the synth-based instrumental "Sidewalk Cafe" was used as the bumper music for our local mid-day movie theme.

This album is a top 3 Todd for me - I love the whole thing from beginning to end. This is the third of four songs from this album on my list with the last finishing very high.

Very meta.

Damon Albarn song #16

Blur - "For Tomorrow" from Modern Life is Rubbish (1993)

Legend has it that Damon wrote this song on the piano at his parents' house on Christmas day 1992 because the label needed a single.

it's quintessential Britpop with a chorus that's perfect singing along with one hand aloft and the other holding a pint.

Solo performance at the BBC (2014) where you can hear the spoken word verses that were drowned out on the original

2- With the band already accused of blatant sexism, among other things, this track didn’t exactly help. Taking the bands explanation of the song below with a grain of salt, its hard to refute

Tongue in cheek or not, it has not aged well.
Obviously not.
In the context of 1977 London where confrontation, pissing people off and getting attention was more important than peoples sensibilities
Its also a big reason why Stranglers gigs are total sausage fests.

The odd thing though is that the audience arent dumb. The numerous Stranglers fans i have interacted with have been educated, high paid professionals and the band is their relief.

This song is either a depraved, frustrated man at work or as the band have suggested numerous times, a look at the attitude of perverted older men, ie their parents and grandparents generation, and their attitudes towards women. It was important at the time to piss off the older generation.

I would like to give the band the benefit of the doubt here, but thats impossible given the subject matter of numerous songs. A wry smile and a wink, wink approach masks only so much. This song is important in understanding the Strangkers personality flaws, as well as their musicianship.

Probably only 2 or 3 more tracks where the band “play” the lecherous dirty men. 2 are more subtle, 1 less so. Its one of their biggest hits.

Knew 11 of the 15's. Very strong playlist as it should be as we enter the top half of our picks.
Assorted comments in playlist order.

What's the Use- awesome cool and trippy, love it!

Selected (and shuffled) favorites from #15.

*Omen - The Prodigy
*Poor Poor Pitiful Me - Warren Zevon
*Darker - Doves. I’ve stopped listing basically every Doves song as at least a like, but this one was a high(er) point.
*If It Takes All Night - Frank Black & the Catholics
*Phantoms Can’t Hang - deadmau5
*Watch the Corners - Dinosaur Jr.
*What About Love? - Heart. Feels like a somewhat forgotten part of their catalog, or maybe that’s just me.
*16 Military Wives - The Decemberists
*Supersonic Rocket Ship - The Kinks

Also, “Don’t Stop Me Now” got lots of appreciation (including from me) in the Worldwide M-AD threads, and rightfully so.
