Middle Aged Dummies!! Artists #1's have been posted!! (6 Viewers)

Stumbled upon acoustic guitarist Gary Lutton tonight, looking for an acoustic version of Luther Vandross’ “Never Too Much”.

Day-um! Can any of you see how he’s applying that click percussion? I thought it was a metronome at first, but no. One of the comments says he’s doing it with his right thumb.

Sorry I've fallen so woefully behind...It is not at all a reflection on the quality of music here, just had a lot going on.

Glad people enjoyed Black Diamonds. It's the only live track I included. I think it's kind of the kickoff to the real heart of the Big Thief stuff. Of course that is true for every artist but given how recent and small the breadth of this band is compared to say Stevie Wonder or Queen or Dinosaur Jr it is more significant. I am glad to see people still on board for the ride as we hit the best part.

PhishshukeChalkdust Torture

Killer tune. My good buddy @General Malaise refers to it as the "gateway song to Phish". Based on lack of discussion here, I guess not.

But I hate the studio version I posted, primarily because that's not Trey's real voice. Here's a live version. If you don't like those first 5 minutes, then I can't help you. You can make fun of whatever you want in the following 20 minutes.

Nice peak starting around the 20:00 mark with the place going nuts at exactly 23:00.

8 days until I go to Pittsburgh to see a few shows. Can't ####ing wait.

Thanks. Also, just got ticket lottery results for two shows in Dayton in October. Floors for night one and pretty good seats for night two. I'd post this in the Phish thread but I don't think anyone posts in there any more but me.

That is fun, love hearing people getting out there and enjoying themselves. As weird as it sounds, I work with a lot of people dealing with, lets just call them "issues", and one of their biggest problems is that they don't know what they like to do or what they find fun.

If you know what you like, go after it! It's a blessing.

Interesting. Do you mean your coworkers, or people you work with due to your line of work?

My line of work- I am a teacher but specifically I tend to work with high risk kids, social-emotional issues. Not all of them- there are just a significant amount who have poor behaviors and say they don't like those behaviors but they don't know what else do do, have no other interests, don't know what they like, have no hobbies, etc.

Hey everybody I’m still on a cruise of the Greek islands, loving life. But the WiFi here is spotty so while I’m enjoying reading about the songs I’m not able to do much listening. I’ve got a long list for when I get back in a few weeks. I’m glad so many of you are enjoying the Elton John tunes- they are close to my heart. These picks have been awesome.

Rise of the Eagles- this is pretty good and surprised me! What's the deal with the artist name or is this a cover ?

So the submitted track was a cover by the Prodigy, but is not on Spotify, you'd need to use the YouTube link in the 16s post to get there. I suggested to use the original by Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster in the playlist, which is what I assume has been done

In Fear Of Fear

Roxy on a mega dose of speed - while thumbing thru Lovecraft.

Ash were a very accomplished sax enthusiast, and he sprinkled it rather generously thru the catalog. "Mask" were a ballsy follow-up to their more minimalist debut, as they punched outta the confines and flexed their chops with any number of left turns on red ... knocked some for a right loop (see Peter's reaction in the earlier selection "Crowds") ... though the bleak strip down remained on a coupla tracks, along with the horror/sci-fi themes, the lads chucked some Gang of Four-ish grooves in for good measure, courtesy of Danny/David - who both had one foot on the banana peel already, methinks.

PS - if one can cite the connection to this song and McConaughey ... well, you got way too much static on the brain .... which i like.

Is it OK to say I like really Heart's Barracuda?
Asking for a friend.
There’s nothing not to like - outside of maybe getting overplayed.
Not sure it comes across in an on-line forum, but this was just a wee tweak to anyone with music snob tendencies (raises hand) that may occasionally ding popularity. To be perfectly clear, I do this sometimes often.

Some time ago I was trying to think about, what might be the song that I’ve heard the most times in my life? Between jamming it a lot when I was growing up, and then being in the military for a long time, being a bar fly for a long time, etc. I think I came up with a probable answer, it’s timeless and overplayed and amazing, and we are definitely going to see it on this countdown..

I am sorry but a family vacation is no excuse.

Also I’m very jealous, enjoy!

Interesting. So just throwing something out there they are basically saying they can't stop biting their nails because they have nothing else to do? Another kid might have a club or activity they are in that might distract them? I am purposely being tame with my examples, and I know you are dealing with more extreme and harder situations.

@Don Quixote is there something you want me to add in the spotify list instead?
No - I don’t think any Spotify substitute for the next one. Album is not on there. YouTube link probably best for any folks that want to listen to it.
Sounds good. The masses should make note that there will be 45 songs on this playlist instead of the expected 46.

I didn't comment on the 17s as it didn't seem much grabbed me besides the usually core of artists I talk about. The 16s hit me more . These are just general ramblings from the two.

Probably the most shocking thing to come out of it was I added 2 Kinks songs back to back. I really dug Well Respected Man - hit that sarcastic soft spot I have. I also loved the sound of Catch Me Know I'm Falling.
Modern Life is Rubbish is added to the album playlist for reasearch after this. I seem to really click with those Blur songs so far.
I don't if any of you pay attention to the playlist title, but I carried on zilla's tradition of picking a title (or two that one time). I just randomly pick one that makes me laugh or I think is fitting. Where I am going with this is very often it turns to be one of my favorites from the list. The Mystery Zone is a prime example. So good.
I haven't commented much on the SRV selections. An artist I put in the AC/DC category where I like what I hear, but it sounds a bit same-sy after a bit so I don't listen to a lot. That said, I have really liked the last couple entries and I have found myself looking forward to our blues break in the playlist. I really dug Love Struck Baby.
For me the most 'fascinating' artist (it's a good thing) of the countdown has been ...and you will know us it feels like they have 100 albums with how different their sound is from track to track. I've liked just about all of it and I am looking forward to that playlist and more listening. They have been added to "the list".
Black Diamonds was a main standout from the playlist for me. I really liked how they sounded live.
I am pretty familiar with Daft Punk's stuff. I've notice how just about every other song that comes up had a reactiong like "wait, THIS is my favorite song of theirs". Freaking love Digital Love. I guess I am saying I probably should have a heavier dose of Daft Punk in my music rotation.

Yeah for example, HS freshman has a bad drinking problem. Basically on the verge of full blown alcoholism. The kid has no clubs, no hobbies, no other interests. Now the drinking and general poor environment they were raised in is why drugs/alcohol are their only form of recreation but the kid genuinely doesn’t want to keep drinking. It’s just a lot of boredom- what else is there to do? They don’t have many friends, the friends they do have aren’t great influences. Their family are the ones giving them the alcohol in the first place. They have no money, no car. There isn’t even school now so everyday is just sitting around.

If you can, use Thursday as a catch up day. I'll post the #15's Friday AM
I'm glad I didn't bother trying to mix anything while on vacation. With hind sight there were a couple small windows, but any time I'd have tried I'd have been hitting pause every 2-6 minutes and not appreciating anything I'm listening to. I don't intend to catch up once back to reality, but I'll work my way backwards as time allows.

Based on scanning comments I'm not sure if the recent Dino tracks have stuck as much as the beginning ones for people, but maybe I'm wrong. I was talking to Raging Weasel a bit about albums, and after thinking about my list and doing another run through of albums for my "next 31 list", I REALLY underestimated the newest two albums. The only song from either was Garden, but when I went through I was loving about 10 songs from them. Not sure what happened there - didn't give a good enough listen the first times, fell more in love with the band and all their sounds as I went, who knows - I just thought I'd mention it that my top 15 is quite condensed to the middle years of their output. Spoiler alert - 0 more songs from their 1st two or last 2 albums.

Some of that I still stand behind today. There is one song off You're Living All Over Me that I would definitely add today if doing this again, but nothing else. My upcoming #15 comes from an album we haven't gotten anything off of yet - I Bet On Sky. I also stand behind my assessment of this album. I listened to it again after my discussion with RW and didn't hear much else I liked. I would say that or Dinosaur are my least favorite of their albums. That one song REALLY cooks though and kept growing on me.

There is also another album of theirs that we haven't heard anything off of yet (Hi @rockaction! ). There are 3 songs in the top 15 from this one despite having none up to this point. I didn't realize this before the discussion about best albums of the last 20 years. So we might have to have more discussions about why I wouldn't consider that one of my tops and maybe I should revisit that one and play it back to back and think about it. 🎧

Overall we do have a variety in the top 15 coming up. 8 albums, 1 b-side, 2 albums with 3 songs each. 2 more with songs each.

Dammit, I did want to revisit the comment I agreed on about Feel the Pain being overrated, which I agreed on. My reasoning is twofold. First, they don't have that many "mainstream" songs. In that context I think it's one of the lesser of those tunes as well. Another showed up on the list so far - Out There. To me that has much more complicated sound, better solo, etc. There is another I would classify as a mainstream one coming up as well and my thoughts are the same. ****in' epic solo. Second, as you can pick up on Without a Sound is one of my favorite albums, and I don't think Feel the Pain is one of the strongest songs on that album either. Still a great tune and was on my list, but I wanted to revist that conversation later after getting through a bit of my playlist for more context.

At least for me, I'm already at the point that I know I like them more than I realized and need to listen to more. Listening and commenting on everything is an arduous process, and it's going to get worse going forward because I expect to like more from most of these artists as we count down.

I get the Thumper Rule, but I think overall once these get going with the usual suspects we can handle some criticism. I'm honestly curious to hear what people didn't like or even from fans longer than I have been what they might have done differently (of course that might be an end of the countdown conversation too).

I mean, we have 46 artists, 1400 songs. Everybody ain't gonna like everything. Especially if we might be doing multiple of these, I think it's good info to know something like people like 0% metal, or some but not this type of vocals, stuff like that. Yes, I am choosing stuff that I love and want to explore, but personally I do take the groups enjoyment into consideration a little. I'm not going to King Diamond it up, but if I am narrowing it down to a couple, it's good info.

Sorry, a bit of a ramble - mostly what I wanted to reinforce is that like you said, my silence on things isn't me using the Thumper thing. For 15-20 I am digging it so much I am planning on listening to those full playlists right away, and those are the ones I've mostly stopped talking about every playlist and I am trying to comment more on great songs from artists that are more hit or miss with me overall.

Same here. At this point I'm mostly focusing on the hits for the 8-10 artists who are hit or miss for me with my comments.

Well many of the positive comments came from me and I've just fallen behind in listening. Had family stuff, some other mental health things where I needed my comfort music, listened to some podcasts too. I will definitely be digging deep into the full Dino playlist when it comes.

Fully understand. I hope you are finding balance and ways to get through what is going on. Remember this place for help as well, gb. I get what you mean by the bolded. Music - both these playlists and my usual comfort distractions have helped a lot the last couple weeks for me as well. Positive thoughts, friend.

Everybody ain't gonna like everything.
There's surely a few bands/artists that just aren't my thing and I don't see that changing. However, I've been pleasantly surprised by multiple artists.
I've learned to not underestimate these drafts and the people supplying the music. I have biases, and that's why I make myself put it on shuffle. There are a couple bands in here I that were in that category for me - Kinks, Elton, etc. BUT those have been some of the best surprises for me as well when I find one or two tunes that I connect with. I think most genres and artists I have soften up to enough because of our musical adventures to know I will be able to get through them and probably find some gems.

For me, anybody who does reggae will have the hardest hurdle to overcome. I know - poor excuse for a stoner here. ;)

Thanks, I appreciate it. While I am personally trying to work on being healthier (more exercise, stopped all weed, cut back a lot on drinking- well I had, that’s been more challenging than I hoped) it’s more dealing with the kid I mentioned earlier with the myriad of issues- alcohol, sexual abuse, self harm, etc. I can’t even really figure out how it happened but from February to the end of the school year we became very close. Obviously school is out but we still talk regualrly, I talk with her guardian and grandmother, I’ve met up with her family for ice cream and whatnot.

It’s been very rewarding but it’s also a lot of additional mental and emotional stress because her life is a mess and I’m basically one of only 2 people in the world she trusts with what’s going on with her.

Round 16 reactions - probably my favorite of the playlists overall so far. Awesome stuff.

Top 5-10 known to me favorites from - Police, Rush, Alice In Chains, Queen, AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Heart, and Elton.

Enjoyed the new to me songs from - Modest Mouse, Kinks, Chicago, Phish, Clutch, Dino Jr, Hold Steady, Blur, Doves, Spoon, S&G, Bauhaus.

Two standouts that blew me away. Highlights of a great overall playlist - Trail of Dead and Tragically Hip. Loved both these songs and got me to do a relisten already. For sure need to revisit these later.

Great stuff

I was a bit intimidated listing out my favorite Genesis songs and revealing them to everyone, especially with a few of the regulars here for sure having more knowledge of the band and it’s history than I do.

It’s been great to see all the positive comments everyone has for each others selections, even if their rankings and choices are different than they would have made. I love the feedback I’ve gotten and seen for others so far. This has been awesome!

I liked what I’ve heard from them, but behind on my listening due to vacation. It seems like a number of people are also traveling. I’m not sure if that partially explains decline in comments, as we are in peak vacation season.

Agree. I hearted more songs from this playlist than any previous one. The 16 list has my favorite songs thus far from Clutch, Slade, Jorge Ben Jor, The Hold Steady, Phish, Rush, Blur, Spoon, Heart + solid entries from so many others. I guess that should be expected as the countdown proceeds towards the top selections.

I was digging the Frank Black song thinking have I heard this before?...it sounded so familiar yet it was unfamiliar...took me a while to register Bruce!

Some more thoughts on some #16s

Night on The Sun - I like the guitar and drums in this one.
In Fear of Fear - Very danceable far out tune. I like that bass.
Some Cities - Love the beat and music in this one.
Tom Sawyer - 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁
Part-Time Lover - The beginning of the intro reminds me of H&O's Maneater for about 3 or 4 seconds.
As I Rise - 🤠
Again - Hey hey hey
Amy - Pretty ballad
Lorelei - Shiddy ballad. just kidding, weasel! I like this one. 🥃
I'm Going Down - A Bruce cover! Will Bruce's version show up too? It's my favorite tune off of Born in the USA.
Stolen Car - Speaking of Bruce, I'm still liking his slow storytelling tunes.
Monkey Wrench - 🎸🎸 🙉 🔧 🎸🎸
Introduction - 🎷🎺

Me and The Boys - 🥁👏🥁👏. The Captain (Mrs. R) of this good time band has been MIA. :stalker:

Maybe more later

That's my favorite Phish song.
I thought the last song on Lawn Boy was the “gateway” to Phish.

I got over this a few music threads ago.

JPALMER at work told me she is very impressed with all the respects we all give each other in here

So kudos to all you dummies.

I haven't been commenting on the Elton tunes, because you hadn't been in the thread talking about them, but your choices have been a great ride.

"No Reply At All" has been in my head for a week or so now. It's replaced "Doctor My Eyes" finally. Oh ****...that was...that was you, too.

we have a memory here ...

Based on scanning comments I'm not sure if the recent Dino tracks have stuck as much as the beginning ones for people, but maybe I'm wrong.

At least for me, I'm already at the point that I know I like them more than I realized and need to listen to more. Listening and commenting on everything is an arduous process, and it's going to get worse going forward because I expect to like more from most of these artists as we count down.

+1

And I'm probably checking out now, because the five-day extravaganza that is my mom's 80th birthday starts today, and I'm going to get even further behind. I'll definitely listen to many of the full one-artist playlists when the countdown is over, though!
