Mike McCarthy fired (1 Viewer)

Only makes me wonder what a coach who understood modern offense could have done. Got folks to work hard & well, but gave them no framework for real success with his anachronistic gameplans and lack of original thought. It was embarrassing that this season's rookie receivers got worse at presenting targets rather than better in the half-season they had to rely on them. And his fundamentalitis in the backfield.....
I don’t have the access you have to the Packers staff meetings, practices and game plans to be able to make this kind of assessment. I’m just a normal fan, not one with the deep level of experience working on NFL coaching staffs that you and others presumably have to be able to make these kinds of judgments. Ive never even met the guy, and he obviously has always been contemptuous of the media, giving them nothing, for which I give him great credit. For a fan at my level, the only tangible metric at my disposal is wins and losses. To pretend to go any deeper imo is pure fantasy.  On his record, it’s probably time for him to go. Two straight losing seasons is simply not good enough under the rediculously high standards in Green Bay, regardlesss of circumstances or one’s mastery of modern offense.

i am tangibly overwhelmed. might have even peed a lil bit. thank you

Is this the most attractive head coaching opening in the last decade?  All time?  Can't think of a much better job for a new coach to walk into.  Best QB in the league, still enough talent around to be a contender, incredibly storied franchise with history, etc.

Gotta think they're going to get their choice of any HC candidate they want.

I’ve got a feeling it’s going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better in titletown.
Yep. If anyone thinks this is some sorta magical fix they have a big surprise coming. While I agree that McCarthy's time in GB has come and gone, there are a lot more problems with the Packers than Mike McCarthy. Gutenkist has his work cut out for him in rebuilding the roster. That won't be done overnight or even in one off-season. Gutenkist also has to hit on the right coach the first time. They don't have another 5 years of Rodgers career to get it right. He needs to hire the right coach his first try. Aaron Rodgers has to play like the 130 mil QB he is being paid to be. He's been nowhere close to that this year.

Not sure money is going to fix everything here. Still need to fix Aaron Rodgers. He's been less than adequate this year, to say the least. He's been terribly inaccurate and missed a lot of reads. At what point does the responsibility fall upon him? It's always someone else's fault. Taking subtle jabs at the head coach in his press conferences. Rookie WRs running the wrong depth on their routes. Etc. etc. All may be true but a team leader keeps that in house, especially when that leader has been far from perfect. Hopefully they hire a coach that will be willing to keep Rodgers in check, much like Holmgren did with Favre. My fear is that Rodgers has a big say in who they hire.
If the Packers are smart, they will get a hard-nosed defensive-minded head coach.

Cleveland is a far more attractive option.

Really?  Not sure it can get much worse than it is now.  I’m optimistic with Gutenkunst running things and new coach that hopefully understands the modern NFL.  They will have some cap space once they get rid of dead weight like Matthews and Cobb plus they have 2 first rounders.  I can’t imagine Rodgers playing worse next year either.

plenty to be optimistic about imo. Why do you feel it’s going to get worse?

Without Rodgers GB is one of the bottom 3 teams in the NFL.  The rest of the team is laughable.

It is attractive for a coach to have a great QB like Rodgers though.

Don't see it.  In terms of the future, sure Cleve has a better outlook.  But I think Packers are a better team than the Browns next year.  And the history of the franchise, the city you live in, etc. etc. are better in GB.
Packers aren’t better than the Browns this year. They are an empty shell with an aging QB.

Just talked to Mike McCarthy. Had nothing but praise for the Packers organization. “Im proud I was part of the Packers family, proud to be part of such a great organization.” Said his main focus tonight is his family.
Mike McCarthy still classy. Wish him well. And I have no doubt he will be successful at his next stop. I don't get all the fans dancing on his grave. The man brought a lot of success to GB.

If not fir a boneheaded play by Bostick, maybe he gets another title

Denver with Manning was the best job of the last decade, elite QB, elite defense, and lots of cap room. Its forgotten a bit now, with his recent average-ness, but Elway had a good 3 year stretch where he was arguably the best GM in the NFL.

So, did McCarhty just give up or what? To have Arizona come to Green Bay and win, WTH happened? Something had to happen after the game for this to go down so suddenly.

I think the Packers might be looking at Harbaugh. Is he set in Michigan or is he looking to bail? The Packers team has been in shambles and their players are, less than stellar, right now.

A yes, forgot about them.  That was a good one for sure that Kubiak got.

Wonder how/when the firing took place.  Did they even give him a chance to chat with the team after?  Was it a "dude if you lose this game tonight you're done" text at halftime?

Any new coach is going to weigh having a young QB he can work with and mold vs. an aging QB with an ego he has to manage.
Possibly.  But it's also Cleveland.  If it's a defensive coach, maybe you want to walk into a team with the best qb in the game running the offense.  I still think the allure of coaching in Green Bay can't go totally ignored.

Did you not watch Harbaugh's offense vs Ohio State?  It stinks.  He is stuck in the past.  Rodgers would hate him and his offensive system.

Its always easier when you have a HOF QB.

Harbaugh is so overrated. Closing in on Gruden level overrated. Both suck.

He did bring success and Im thankful...I think he did a great job that Super Bowl run and for a few years after.

But I think the time has come and the writing has been on the wall.  His offense hasn't been good enough and the team has not been good enough. They need change.

No statue for him.

I do believe it was he who popularized deferring when winning the coin toss.  I remember in the first few years them coming out of the locker room after the half, receiving the kick, and then being devastating, he having made impactful half time adjustments.  I barely remember these things as the last 6 years has been a sea of excuses, injuries, bad challenges, bad clock management, bad decisions on fourth down, special team errors costing championships and failure to change as the game has changed.  Andy Reid has changed.  Sean Payton has changed, not McCarthy.

Yeah there seems to be reasons people don’t complain about Payton and Brees only winning one while blasting Rodgers/McCarthy

True but a huge part of that loss falls on McCarthy.  They went ultraconservative in the 4th quarter that game.  Played not to lose instead of dropping a dagger.

I was a little surprised this happened during the season. Certainly we all saw he was a lame duck coach but it is likely any interim coach is as well. This whole franchise is just a disappointment this season. Hopefully they can reorganize quickly because Rodgers isn't getting any younger.

Yep.  As well as.....Bostick didn't do his job.  He didn't play his role.  Something that has happened over and over and over with the Packers the past 5+ years.  And that is coaching - which falls on McCarthy's shoulders.

So will Aaron Rodgers finally have a good game this week basically calling his own plays he wants?  Didn't he do that anyways?  Or is GB just bad and will be bad all year.
