Minnesota Vikings 2008 Regular Season Thread (1 Viewer)

Well, now first place is on the line. Big game against the Bears. When the playoffs were on the line last year the Vikings folded the tents. I expect no different this week.

Sorry guys, but our defense is playing better than any in the league right now and we have won 3 of 4 and are in first place. You need to get over the "Fire Childress" talk. The offense went for almost 400 yards yesterday. I don't hear anyone saying they should bench Peterson - his two fumbles cost the team scoring opportunities and should have cost them the Saints game.
What?Defense playing better than any in the league?Except for that Titans defense that dominated the Vikings. The Bears who will dominate them. The Giants...Look, the Vikings were basically dominated by NO and got lucky on some crappy calls and idiotic play calling in the end. They got the calls yesterday too.And you are "tied" for first..but GB beat you so...no first place.

I'm sorry, but shutting down the Viking offense is nothing special. They only gave up one offensive TD to the Saints...please don't comment on the Vikings' defense when you don't even watch them play.

I'm sorry, but with the loss of Henderson AND his backup, Vikes D is very susceptible to runs up the gut right now (and the puddy tats took some advantage of that). That's one area the Vikings can't be vulnerable to if they're going to stick to their current game plan.

I have watched them play 3 of their games.Their secondary is pitiful, this great pass rush they were supposed to have is not happening. The Titans defense is miles ahead of the Vikings...as is the Bears and Giants defense.

Care to disagree with anything I said?Does anyone other than a completely blind homer think the Vikings defense is playing better than any other team right now?

Does anyone other than a completely blind homer think the Vikings defense is playing better than any other team right now?
Nope. These last two wins have been pyrrhic victories since it keeps Childress further away from the chopping block.
Exactly.Now...they could be a good team (and I have long said with a decent coach they could even do well with an average QB)...but with Childress and Gus, I just don't see it.

They are 9th in the league in sacks. They are 7th in overall defense. This is after they gave up a ton to the Packers and Colts. They are ahead of the Bears in both those categories. I guess I may be a "blind homer" but at this moment their defense is playing great football. I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

You do realize that they built 6 of those sacks up against Detroit right?Forget overall defense based on yards...look at points against.Minny is not playing even top 5 defense right now, much less best in the league.

not to mention the titans have played a bunch of crap offenses, the best one might have been the vikes. I love it when sho calls someone else a huge homer :wall:

Hasselbeck going to play defense for Seattle too?Lets not act as if Seattle was lighting it up before he got hurt.I agree the division sucks. Any team being tied for first at 3-3 right now has no room to brag (and don't take the Packer comment as any bragging...just stating the Vikes are not really first in the division).

Care to find any of my Packer posts where I go even near claiming the Packers are better than they are right now?Hah!!!I guess Im a homer for saying the defense sucks right now and the Oline is playing bad right? The Titans are a much better defense than Minny...and will keep showing it. You can keep living in homer denial and think the Vikes are on the right track and something more than mediocre to average...fine by me.

They are 14th in points allowed...this with the Bush punt returns and the short fields that their offense gave the Titans for 2 of their scores (the Bears are 27th). They are also 15th against the pass - with their "pitiful" secondary. You also have to take into account how horrible the Vikings' offense has been. That leads to more time for the defense out on the field and they are performing very well.

You just keep doing what you do buddy, as long as it makes you happy!
It passes the time.I think the Vikes should trade for Troy Smith in the offseason.

Ya know, I was just thinking that what the 'Vikings 2008 Regular Season' thread really needs is to have half its posts occupied by the biggest Packer blowhard/antagonist on FBG. I mean, I'm all for doing this thread up just like a Favre debate.

Funny how Grant has looked just fine his last 2 games against the Vikings.I don't think Grant sucks...if I was just a homer, Id say how much better jackson is and so on...but you don't see it.I think Grant is a decent RB...not all world...but was in a situation to perform well...the line has not held up either and neither has he played very well.Yup...sounds like big time homer talk.

You are bragging about being 14th in points allowed?Really? The Bears are 27th in points allowed?Ummm...the Bears are 7th actually...and the Vikings are actually 11th.The offense has been bad...but there is nothing out there even close to showing the Vikings defense as playing better than anyone else right now. Its simply a statement you cannot back up with any sort of fact.

Antagonist?Because I disagree that the Vikings are playing better defense than anyone else in the NFL?Please.Im not the one coming in to call out another poster without even being on topic. Now am I?I came in here to discuss the topic...just as I did in the Favre debate. Some of you come in just to bash other people.Have fun with that.

The Vikings are a joke right now and Im the biggest homer you'll find...thanks to some horrible officiating actually going the Vikes way, we won the last two games...no way you should beat the Lions on a last second FG...

Oops...the Bears are 27th in passing defense, not in scoring defense.

VIKES GOT SNOOKERED BY TAPEHPosted by Mike Florio on October 13, 2008, 5:49 p.m. EDT The Vikings opted against re-signing Pro Bowl fullback Tony Richardson after the 2007 season, choosing instead to acquire Thomas Tapeh via free agency.Several months later, the Vikes are having some buyer’s remorse. The problem? Tapeh had knee surgery in February, and didn’t disclose it to the Vikings.“I think his knee bothered him a little bit when he came in here,” coach Brad Childress said Monday, “and I’m finding out now that he did have an offseason cleanup in February, which I wish he would have shared with us.”Tapeh has appeared in only two of six games during his first year with the Vikings. Though supposedly healthy, Tapeh is routinely deactivated, ostensibly because he doesn’t play special teams. We tend to think that Chilly has opted to give Tapeh the cold shoulder in retaliation for hiding the truth about his knee. And, actually, that’s one coach’s decision from Childress with which we can agree.
Awesome. Just... awesome. This franchise needs some kind of an intervention.

Maybe they should move Kleinsasser back to FB. It seemed to work when Robert Smith was in the backfield.

After Childress' press conference yesterday, how can he have ANY supporters left?I'm still driving the "Fire Childress" bandwagon. Anyone want on? :nerd:Florio from PFT is with me:

CHILLY CAN FEEL THE HEATPosted by Mike Florio on November 17, 2008, 7:24 p.m. Embattled Vikings coach Brad Childress, who has been the continuous target of fan angst and media criticism during an underachieving 2008 season, has claimed that he doesn’t hear the boos from the stands.Apparently, he does read the words of some of the folks who would like to see him join the ranks of the unemployed.Said Childress during his Monday press conference: “I read a great quote the other day. It was author unknown. It read like this: That editorialists and columnists are like men that come down from the mountains after the battle and shoot the wounded. I thought there is a certain something to that.” Really? We shoot the wounded? Or do we shoot the guys who are responsible for getting all those other guys wounded, and worse?Look, Childress can say whatever he wants. It won’t change the fact that he’s the personification of the Peter Principle, and that he has no business being the head coach of an NFL team. The mere fact that he’d see fit to rattle the cages of the folks whose job it is to hold him accountable for his blunders serves only to further confirm our belief that he doesn’t have the temperament to be the guy on whose desk the buck stops.Mr. Wilf? You know what needs to be done. We hope that, whenever your team’s season ends, you’ll move as quickly to do it as you did three years ago, when the Meathead era ended only moments after a win in Week Seventeen.

And the Williams boys go in front of Goodell later this week.

Edit...and apparently Allen too. For the hit on Rodgers after the 2 hits on Schaub got him fined.

IMO, the hit on Rodgers was not that bad, not even sure if their helmets hit or not. Certainly should not be fined or suspended for that.

what was his crappy explanation for having ADP on the bench on the last drive?? Something about "well the defense wasn't going to let us pass deep".. :nerd: WTF?? That is the reason you had your best player on the bench.. because the Defense was basically playing Prevent... Almost screams.. "Fire me Ziggy, I'm lost out here".. :hot:

There is one guy Vikes fans might despise more than Childress:

Stonehands
...

Asked what his weight was, presumably for a tale-of-the-tape chart, Childress joked that he was "190 pounds of twisted steel and rompin', stompin' dynamite." Childress also asked the reporter, "Do you want my reach, too?"

At 6-1 and 200 pounds, Williamson has the height and weight advantage. But, for the record, Williamson did offer to fight with both hands tied behind his back.

....
Hi. I'm a professional football coach. This is my friend, the professional football player. Vote for Pedro.

Why would you despise TWill? It's not his fault the Vikings reached horribly and took him so early. :)
They really had no clue what they were doing when they drafted him at 7. Ridiculous. I don't think he was on anyone's radar at that point.
I remember being upset that they passed on Mike Williams. I guess it was a lose-lose situation.http://blog.mlive.com/highlightreel/2008/0..._is_one_of.html

I'm on the fire Childress wagon. To leave ADP on the bench for basically the whole 4th quarter, the week after he proved that he can single handedly win you a game is pathetic. Asking Gus to win you the game?? WTF?

It was only lose-lose if the team went WR in 2005, although Roddy White went late in the round. Let's face it; the team was directionless at that point. All we heard leading up to the draft is "we aren't going to panic trying to replace Moss with the #7" and that's exactly what they did. How ironic that it was one of the first times a draftable Maryland player wasn't snapped up by Tice (Merriman). No doubt he drafted all the iffy ones. I sure wouldn't have minded Merriman/R.White over T.Willaimson/E.James. Obviously it's hindsight, but what a horrible first round for the Vikes who had 2 top 20 picks.

I'm willing to eat some crow here. For Brad Childress to have this team at 9-5 with the options he has at QB (and for those QBs to play within themselves and suprisingly well) is very impressive.

And Jared Allen was obviously worth every draft pick and every penny.

Defense was crazy good and Tarvaris actually has looked like an NFL QB the last two games. In spite of their weaker opponent D's, it's a great sign of improvement. Watching today's game was a great time.

Also, Madieu Williams has made a huge difference to the defense. I think when Tyrell Johnson takes over for Sharper (next year?) that they will be a formidable duo.
