Mix Tape Draft for your Wake or End of Life - now underway (1 Viewer)

Posted Tuesday at 02:05 PM (edited)

Let's say 15 songs, no more than 75 minutes. If you want longer songs, you get fewer of them.

If you do an assisted suicide at your end, this is the mix tape you want playing as you pass into whatever's past here.

Alternatively, it can be the mix tape you want played at your wake.

This is in no way a celebration or affirmation of death/suicide. THis is the last 75 minutes of music you'd like to hear or share with you friends as they remember you,

We'll allow duplicate picks, but they must be in a different round.

Time to go

I'll go ahead and start things off.

cos - R1 - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down / The Band, Last Waltz

I guess this is Kind of a weird choice for me. Although born and raised a southerner, I despised much of its legacy and culture. But this song makes me contemplate and reflect on that, and while I feel correct in my decision, it is still mournful. Like so many life choices the right choices are only less wrong.

But mostly because it may be the greatest song I ever heard.

I may not make it through this- but I'll give it a go for a bit...

this song grabbed me so hard in 2007- one of the first new tunes I heard after my son was born as I was jumping back into finding new music (first "me" thing I did with him around), so I have all kinds of emotions tied into this one. the harmonies and lead vocals made me cringe at first listen, and then I couldn't get enough. took me a while to even figure out it wasn't just the same named song, but a cover of black flag's stripped down.

always loved the lyrics in the original and feel like this softer/slower version gives them a different feel

Jealous cowards try to control
They distort what we say
Try to stop what we do
When they can't do it themselves

We are tired of your abuse
Try to stop us, but it's no use

Society's arms think they're smart
I find satisfaction in what they're lacking 'cause
We are born with a chance
And I'm gonna have my chance

Rise above

1. rise above- dirty projectors (studio version)

1.03 In My Life, The Beatles

An obvious choice for its existential aspect, but so much more.

In my life, i got to do a lot of fancy things with a lot of fancy folk but the greatest pleasure & terror of my wikkid tour of this impatient rock was wrangling the whirlwind that was Mary Louise Lauer. She earned every bit of her fury with a criminal upbringing and spent every gram of it in her short life. There was but one thing which could bring her down from tornado mode - your humble servant wrestling her into a swaying dance and singing "In My Life" with my neck vibrating against hers.

Bonus: the song even got me a son. In her 2nd year of bone cancer and the beginning of the last year of her life, my Mary got absolutely feral in her ways. The bartender of my corner saloon called me at work to tell me that Scary Mary was tearing her joint up, in the middle of someone's birthday party no less. Kelly could control her better than any but me, so i knew it was bad. Got there to see a bunch of men holding the celebrant back from whacking my beloved, who was waving him on. I reversed my giant darling out to the dance floor, put a $20 in the tip jar of the singer playing the party and asked her to play this song. I rocked her and vibrated "In My Life" into her soul in harmony to the singer til' she re-entered humanity.

Turns out my actions had as great an effect on the singer as my wife. When the cancer soonafter started snapping Mary's limbs and reduced her to a snarling invalid, one of her wishes was that i find someone to step out with now that she couldnt wife me. She recommended that singer, it turned out my Marytaming performance made enough of an impression on her to give me a go, we were togetherish for Mary's last year and we ended up making a son together. Life for death - in my life, i've loved them all.

I think my early picks will probably just be my no-brainer picks that don't necessarily have a story, but that I love just for their beauty or lyrics. I have one song that I've already told my family that I want at my funeral, so that will be my last submission. In the meantime, here is the first of my no-brainer picks. Again, not any particular reason for this one, other than it's pure beauty to me.

Nuvole Bianche

My "theme", I guess, is just songs that have meant something to me at one time or another (or, more likely, at all times since). Not those that I think are the best or even those I love the most, just those that hit me the hardest. These will be my ten heaviest hitters. Most may be obvious or corny, but that's on me.

1. "As" - Stevie Wonder

I could actually just pick this ten times in a row and be done here. This one's not tied to any specific memory. When it came out, it was kind of lost on the titanic album it came from. But, kinda like the music on the record itself, it's kept growing and growing on me for 40+ years. And now I can't imagine not being able to hear it when I need to. It's a very rare thing for a song to make me cry and smile every damned time I hear it.

The very sound of joy.

ZZZ Top - Aesop Rock

Okay. It's a duplicate from another draft. And I take Aesop in seemingly every draft (actually, that's wrong. Shoot). All I know is that this song celebrates youth and music and the immediacy of its impact on people and I would like to celebrate that, because music means that much to my life. I hope everybody at my last rites, wake, and funeral realizes the intricate knowledge of certain subcultures it took to write this song, spanning that archaic time period that was the seventies lasting into the nineties. It's got nods to classic rock, hip hop, and punk. As Floppo said about grabbing you, nothing has grabbed me more since my move to San Diego from my life in CT.

Plus these lyrics are fine lyrics for a wake.

When they ask how you, feeling you, tell em you, feeling like
Something important died screaming, you, tell em you, feeling like
Something even more important arrived breathing, something you should probably try feeding
When they ask how you, living you, tell em you, living like
Something important died hissing, you, tell em you, living like
Something even more important arrived giving
Something you should probably try willing

Rap Genius's take on the lyrics. Awesome.

I'm assuming this will be more of a mix for a wake/gathering than a last playlist, so I'm concerned about setting a mood that isn't morbid but songs that capture my attitudes about life and love.  I'll probably change the order later, but for now starting with Talking Heads--This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody).

I grew up smoking pot and skating to Southern California punk, but New Wave was inevitable as MTV tried to define music for early GenX'ers like myself.   Talking Heads were the first New Wave band that really grabbed me.   This song is them at their most stripped down.    It's a love song built with no story, and a concept of home being wherever you are.   I've rarely felt at home anywhere, and women have come and gone on a regular basis, although some quite meaningful.   It's a bouncy, stupidly simple tune and helps balance out the darker songs in my list.

I love these picks so far. I love the video of a black and white Rock Band-ish rendition of Nuvole Bianche.

And, Rousseau Music is its progenitor. Nice!

Anyway, I'll keep the comments to a minimum this draft, as I get the feeling I'm among heavyweights here and there's no need.

no ####- the wife, who usually toils in the most cliched (albeit good) 80s tunes had this going last night. at first I was in knee-jerk "wife's musical taste is lame" mode... but this song came on. so simple, but that groove- so brilliant and infectious... could just go on forever, and I'd be happy. found myself thinking what an all-timer amazing song it is, and also easing off the wife's musical tastes (amazing taste in so many other areas   )

My list is going to be pretty weird based on the songs I looked at this weekend when doing my “research”.

Tupelo Honey

The song my wife and I had our first dance to at our wedding and a song we’ve played together millions of times. It always makes me think of her and how wonderful she is. Add to that Van is my mom’s favorite and she introduced me to him and it’s most certainly how I want to either begin or end my list. I couldn’t even make it through a full listen this weekend without starting to cry.

On a somewhat related note, why the hell did Spotify take down the Tupelo Honey album? Not cool.

Do the songs we draft have to be drafted in the order in which they will be played on our mix tape, or can we rearrange them later?

That's a stinker that Spotify took it down. The song is still available on his Essential album on Spotify, but the proper album is not. Most of his other proper albums are on there. That's weird Tupelo Honey was omitted.

I've been thinking about this - it's pretty tough.  I decided it would be music played at my wake.  On one hand, my favorite music would be a lot of stuff meant to be played loud - on the other hand, that isn't the kind of music that would be appealing to a sizable portion of the guests.

As a result, the prospect of this draft made me realized I really need to make arrangements for 2 wakes - a more traditional one and another for later that evening for the hardier partiers.  The music for each of the wakes would be different enough there would need to be two song lists.  This helped me make some decisions on how to mix the hard and soft songs - don't.

My draft list will be for the general wake.  It isn't necessarily my most favorite songs of all time - just stacking those together doesn't provide the right feeling or flow to the situation.  The songs will be long-time favorites and songs that evoke especially strong, fond memories.  Not looking to have everyone sit around and listen to music, they should be able to comfortably talk and reminisce - while the drafted song list provides a musical background that will provide both some occasional pop, and remind my family and friends of the times we had.

Glad we can reorder these too - that will help a lot.  Though this one will probably end up being the first song.

RD 1: Where To Now St. Peter - Elton John

Didn't realize the draft was still a thing -- thought it was going to be skipped.  Didn't mean to spoil by posting the right answer all at once like that.

 OK Cos.... for you....

My library of listening music isn't remotely close to all that post in these threads.   I am so grateful for all these music threads on FBG as I rediscovered my love for music in the last 18 months.  I now listen to music almost everyday after not listening much, except for in the car, since 1990.

I reply to the Binkster here because I think we are the same age and have similar music tastes, and I'm super grateful to him for rediscovering Todd Rundgren.

I don't know how many I'll post, but this is the definitely the first song I want played.   And I want this video played that I shot last Friday.  With all the fog and lightning.  Maybe even set up those effects inside at the funeral home for my wake as people walk in.

From a few days after I turned 16 at Dodger Stadium,  and all the shows I've seen until the last one, last Friday, Funeral for a Friend/Loves Lies Bleeding has been one of my favorite songs of all time.   Here's the video I shot last Friday. Except for a few seconds of distortion, I'm amazed at how well the sound came out from my S7.

I'm guessing it was an oversight that I wasn't on this list. Regardless, here I go...

This first song is here because of the ways the story it tells resonates with me.

Level 42-My Father's Shoes

Even now I see him walking home at sundown
He's whistling rock of ages
With his lunch box at his side
I still recall the smell of smoke
And ashes on his jacket
And that factory dust was on his shoes
The afternoon he died

I swore I'd never heed that factory whistle
In a banker's cage I signed a loan
Against my future sins
All the neighbors shook my hand
And wished me well upon my leaving
Though my father was a poor man
He owned a wealth of friends

So take these boots that shine like Judas silver
And all these sad reflections on lost untraveled roads
While the rain falls on a field of bones and roses
Give me back my father's shoes and let me walk in those

My stroke was good, the deals fell fast end easy
I hired the sweat of honest men and took the lion's share
My wardrobe filled with shirts of silk
And boots of tender leather
And I walked in them the halls of power
But found no comfort there

So take these boots that shine like Judas silver
And all these sad reflections on lost untraveled roads
While the rain falls on a field of bones and roses
Give me back my father's shoes and let me walk in those

Lady lay these boots upon the fire
'Cause lady now I swear I'll never wear this pair again
I meant to stand up straight and tall
It never was that easy
Now these soles are stained from walking on the dreams
Of better men

So take these boots that shine like Judas silver
And all these sad reflections on lost untravelled roads
While the rain falls on a field of bones and roses
Give me back my father's shoes and let me walk in those

That whole album has been one of my most played albums throughout my entire life.  Still holds up extremely well.  Love that song and it is likely to be on several lists here.

And always great to connect or reconnect people to Todd.

Hey cos... I deleted that.  You can do the same and we'll have destroyed evidence of rock's wrongdoing.   ;)

Van Morrison is one two artists I think can fill out an entire playlist for me in this draft, but I'll try make it a more diverse selection than that, but for my first pick it is Van with Purple Heather.
