8.  Foo Fighters--These Days

Another one that I chose because of seeing them play it.   I didn't know this song very well the first time I heard it live and it blew me away.   Quickly became my favorite of theirs.    Grohl says it's the best song he's ever written.

One of these days the ground will drop out from beneath your feet
One of these days your heart will stop and play its final beat
One of these days the clocks will stop and time won't mean a thing
One of these days their bombs will drop and silence everything

But it's alright
Yeah it's alright
I said it's alright

Easy for you to say
Your heart has never been broken
Your pride has never been stolen
Not yet not yet

One of these days
I bet your heart'll be broken
I bet your pride'll be stolen
I bet I bet I bet I bet
One of these days
One of these days

One of these days your eyes will close and pain will disappear
One of these days you will forget to hope and learn to fear

But it's alright
Yeah it's alright
I said it's alright

Easy for you to say
Your heart has never been broken
Your pride has never been stolen
Not yet not yet

One of these days
I bet your heart'll be broken
I bet your pride'll be stolen
I bet I bet I bet I bet
One of these days
One of these days

But it's alright
Yeah it's alright
I said it's alright
Yes it's alright

Don't say it's alright
Don't say it's alright
Don't say it's alright

One of these days your heart will stop and play its final beat
But it's alright

Easy for you to say
Your heart has never been broken
Your pride has never been stolen
Not yet not yet

One of these days
I bet your heart will be broken
I bet your pride will be stolen
I bet I bet I bet I bet

My very first concert without the parentals was seeing these guys. I first heard their music when our babysitter would play The Best of the Bee Gees, which was a compilation of their music from 66-69. Then I'd hear their stuff on the radio. I like their early years, mid-years, and disco years. What is known as their disco years is somewhat misleading, because they were more pop and R&B with only a few disco/dance songs sprinkled in during that time of their career. I've always snuck them into mixes played at parties, road trips, etc. through the years. I remember singing a song of theirs on karaoke in some seedy place in San Francisco many moons ago. It just seems natural that they would be present on this mix. I'm going to go with one of my favorites from their mid-years (1975). They tried out their falsettos for the first time on this album (Main Course), and it is present on this song. Arif Mardin produced the album and said, "During the recording of Main Course I asked Barry to take his vocal up one octave. The poor man said 'If I take it up one octave I'm going to shout and it's going to be terrible.' He softened up a little bit and that's how their falsetto was born." Fanny was the name of their housekeeper.

8. Fanny (Be Tender With My Love) - Bee Gees

Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller Orchestra

One of the warmest tunes in modern American music. I could see myself just floating away into the night with this tune humming in the background

The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughn Williams

For singing till his heaven fills,
'Tis love of earth that he instils,
And ever winging up and up,
Our valley is his golden cup
And he the wine which overflows
to lift us with him as he goes.

Let It Be by Aretha Franklin

It is rare that the Beatles get outdone by anyone but Aretha had a way of taking someone elses song and making it totally her own.

Percy is in the house! He sure as hell was in the car when I was growing up. Percy was played in the car endlessly on family trips by my father. He has a tendency to listen and watch the same things over and over. At a very young age, I knew every lyric to every song on The Best of Percy Sledge. When dad would start the 8-track/cassette all over again, my siblings and I would always scream, "Nooooooooo!" On the long trips to Florida, we would take our pillows and cover our ears. My sister and I grew to love Percy by our teen years, but I don't think my brother ever did.

9.xx Your Sweet & Shiny Eyes, Bonnie Raitt

Greatest moment of my life. The dozen or so dates my boss, Bonnie Raitt, did with Little Feat were truly like running away and joining the circus. Lowell George was on a very weird cycle in those days - he'd come down from his ranch in the Tehachapis with over 250 lbs hanging from his 5' 6 frame, couple wks practice, 12 wks touring, 3 wks recording, back home to his ol' lady. Thing is, he pretty much didn't sleep the whole time and was pretty damn thin by the end. They say a speedball killed him, but the condition of his heart from that regimen didn't help.

Now, Lowell could jam 24 hours a day, but you gotta have someone to jam with and the rest of the band had long since tired of the hours their leader kept. So mgmt hired folks to hang with him on his "heaven plane". Bonnie had a major crush on Lowell - who was very married - so at the beginning of this tour, she was down for some jammin, long as the Beam was flowing & the herb was sweet. To hear Lowell & Bonnie musically flirt with each was a joy among joys. John David Souther - the best harmony singer i know of - was there a couple nights and the result was purely celestial.

Lowell had this song, written by someone else but it shonuff hit the vibe of the party. He & Bonnie & JD sang it a couple times, but Lowell's eyes were floating away so they stopped. He said,. "barbershop quartet" so Freebo took the bass part and they tried that. "Not enough bottom. Anybody do this?"

Well, your humble servant had been singing "Da hoombah hoombah"s since his voice changed and can actually get tone below C2, so i timidly raised my hand and for the next 20 minutes i was barbershopping with Lowell George, Bonnie Raitt & JDSouther as the Sweet & Shiny Eyes Quartet. The God of whatever ever those moments are kept my notes and tones pure, tight & free and, though he said nothing, my idol lifted his head and smiled like a frog that ate a dragonfly. I'm crying like a baby just remembering it, so nufced.

I've sort of figured out that two of my favorite covers ever are Leonard Cohen covers. I need to start listening to him more. His lyrics are just wondrous, and I'm not a lyrics guy like NV or Tasker.

But enough of that.

Ryan Bingham - The Weary Kind

I can relate to this song.  Took out a thread based upon it.

I'm up through Binky's Neil Young shout-out and great song. I have to step out for a bit so the sheet won't get updated for a bit unless Mr. Ected is around.

Round 9

One of my favorite "new" bands I've likely listened to these guys more than most bands during the last 20+ years. This song is both somber and uplifting enough to fit the mood of my party/wake:

Blue - The Jayhawks

Where have all my friends gone
They've all disappeared
Turned around maybe one day
You're all that was there
Stood by on believing
Stood by on my own
Always thought I was someone
Turned out I was wrong

That's awesome, lyrically.

Great pick. Love the Jayhawks.

The first live show I ever saw was Blue Oyster Cult (12 years old at the San Diego Sports Arena--one of the worst venues I've ever been to for live music).   I came very close to lightening the mood with more cowbell and Don't Fear the Reaper, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

9.x

Instead, a melancholy tribute to squandered talent, wasted time, drinking too much, and friends and lovers that have come and gone throughout my life.   The Replacements--Here Comes a Regular.

Westerberg's lyrics are like stabs to the heart in this one.   "I used to live at home, now I stay at the house" used to hit me in the gut as I realized I was headed for divorce.  Even still, there's something comforting to me about this song and I figure nobody at a wake is going to go dive too deep into the lyrics.

I will try and clean it up tonite/tomorrow. Been busy for the last couple days. Kids b-days make for a lot of work!! (6 12 y.o. girls in the basement for a sleepover!!!)

You know, I'm having trouble choosing a particular song, but I could play the Oh Brother Where Art Though soundtrack and it would be perfect.

Why couldn't you do it? It's a great song, and what better way to fly into the afterlife with some cowbell.

I made my selections into a playlist and listened to it all the way through.   After listening to it, there were three songs that didn't make the cut.

By the way, cos, you have two fifth rounders so I moved one of them to sixth. Figured that would be okay.

Not saying it to be persnickety -- just, I'm lazy.

I want to update the sheet

7. In the End - Linkin Park

This one is for my first born. He and I discovered this song independently of each other, and even though I don't recall ever directly talking about it with him, he knows I like it and I know he likes it. I think I would have included it on this list regardless, because of how much of a struggle it was for us to raise him, and all the worry, frustration and fear we went through getting him through high school, and continue to go through as we try to figure out what he's going to do with himself now.

FWIW, I think the shift in tone between this and the previous song on my list is apropos.
I didn't see this pick on the spreadsheet. TIA

Everybody Dies in their Nightmares by XXXTENTACION

I wanted a hip hop song and while this isn’t the direction I thought I would go at first, I think it works with the rest of my playlist.

Tired of feelin' like I'm trapped in my damn mind
Tired of feelin' like I'm wrapped in a damn lie
Tired of feelin' like my life is a damn game
***** really wanna die in the night time
