MixTape Draft - 6+ word titles. Finish your draft and listen to mixes! (1 Viewer)

@Yo Mama  was the mix that I started with today.

Like I said, I started listening to it with the little one today, but had to pause it when the rap came up.  She is smart as #### (humble brag), and is in that parrot mode where she repeats back all she hears, so I didn't want to go down that road.  It took a couple weeks for her to stop saying "Oh God" at everything after my son said it once when I dropped ### in car.  She sings "We Will Rock You" as she goes down for a nap, don't want that to change to "How I Could Just Kill A Man".

Anyway, I have hinted at it the last couple drafts, but you might be the mo-fo that snipes me the most.  This was a very familiar list, and so many of these songs were ones that I had written down.  PJ, AC/DC, Cypress Hill, U2, on and on.   The one that I was pissed most about was the STP.  Love that song, and would have fit my <3min theme, but I spaced it on that.  Looked at a ton of 90s #### for ideas, but evidently didn't get to that band.  Of all the mixes, I am sure I will be the most familiar with this one, so there wasn't a ton that was new to me (again, a good thing).  Some I just haven't heard for a bit - that SOAD down for example.  Of the stuff that was unfamiliar/been a long time since I listened:

1.  Incubus -

Loved the #### out of this album back in the day.  Forgot how much I loved it until I heard this song and listened to the album today.  I think I just lost my way when they came out with their "mainstream stuff" when I was in college and I was too damn cool for that.

2.  Nas -

Listened to a few of his albums and love the #### out of them, but didn't recognize this song.  So damn good.

3.  KRS-One

Another that I haven't listened to enough.

Again, this probably the mix that might be most aligned with my tastes, so I dug the #### out of it.  My daughter was loving the #### out of the AC/DC, so I added that to her mix (maybe it was me dancing around like Angus that tipped the scales?).  Great mix, and a preemptive "#### you" for sniping most my ideas for whatever draft we decide on next... ;)
Thanks for listening and for the great write up.

It had been a long time since I'd listened to the old incubus stuff and I ended up listening to the whole album when researching that pick. Again, it brought back some great memories of hanging with and following around the band as they started to make it big.

Also hadnt listened to the older, not quite as popular Sublime stuff for a really long time.

Aside from getting exposed to a lot of new stuff that you guys pick, these drafts are also fun for me to revisit music I haven't listed to for years.

@simey  was #2 on deck today

I do joke with her a little bit, but time for some honesty - not sure anybody's mix that made my ####### pucker up quite as much as her's did when I clicked on it.  There was probably some draft years ago where she drafted a lot of country twang and I still hang onto that memory (btw, I tell myself that I hate country), but I have learned that isn't the case all the time, and I look forward to her mixes to push me a little bit, and in this case create a rush of memories I wasn't expecting.

There were a few songs on here I knew going in, and loved.  LOVE the Talking Heads pick, and especially that you chose the live version.  I have watched Stop Making Sense so damn much in the last couple years.  Hearing the Elvin Bishop song made me want to watch one of my favorite movies of all time yet again (Boogie Nights).  Love that song and movie so much.  And yes, LD - that Counting Crows song is damn good too!.  Here were my tops of the new(ish) stuff:

1.  Elvis Costello-

I am starting to put him right along with the Violent Femmes in that every time I hear a song, I seem to dig it, but I don't dig deeper and listen to them more.  I need to correct this.

2.  Marshall Tucker Band -

I had heard this song before, but this is the one that I hinted at that just brought back memories/feelings.  I assume ( and the year would fit) that this is one that parents listened the #### out of back in the day.  I probably listened to this one 5x+ today, can't get enough.

3.  Sammi Smith -

Again, not sure what it was, but this one damn near brought tears to my eyes.  Like above, the release seems to line up with stuff my parents would have listened to, and it just seemed to bring up some sort of emotion, but not sure why/what.

Long story short, good mix, simey!

Also, I need to look to see which Batman (I think it's Batman anyway) that U2 song is from.  Driving me crazy, but I am sure that's another ####ty movie soundtrack I possessed back in the day.

I am still listening to the mix, but an advanced F-U to @Ilov80s for getting "Somebody That I Used To Know" stuck in my head for what probably will be for a week.  Like the song and all, but I wasn't paying attention and it always gets stuck in there for the longest time...

I just realized I forgot to take the Elvis Costello Chelsea tune.  Oh well.  I'm gonna jump back into some more music now.  I should write up a couple in the morning.

@PIK95

PIK Pick Six Returns

Nice mix, PIK

We did the first half highlights so...

Second half highlights:

1) Daft Punk - Primetime Of Your Life/Brainwasher/Rollin' and Scratchin'

2) Grateful Dead - Mountain View

3) Vampire Weekend - The Kids Don't Stand a Chance

Actually, the only questionable song during the second half was the first Dead song. Everything else was awesome, from Weezer to Daft Punk to Duran Duran to Dead Or Alive

You had a really good draft, man. You were right - the two hours was worth it. The second half of this album didn't have any filler in it.

I'm all over the place.  Just jumped to Zillas by accident.
:lmao:

You are reminding me of me.  I am sitting here drunk and thinking "seriously, WTF???) as I listen to the mixes only to realize I accidently clicked on my son's mix of WWE entrance songs.  I need to really think about my son's taste in music and how to correct it... ;)

This was one of the first songs I thought of when we started the draft, but hardly any of their stuff is on Spotify.

Alas, this will just have to be an extra when the bonus release of my playlist comes out. Plus I need some roller skating music on my list.

Bonus Track (non-Spotify) - De La Soul, A Roller Skating Jam Named "Saturdays" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfxiHxJheuc

I'm guessing I'll feel like I have to at some point, but I don't really want to.  I reckon it's what people do out there though.
I was in Vegas in May? or June? who can remember? In any case, I put random bets on Blue Jays games and won! and also lost! In either case the Sportsbook was a fine place to drink some good beer while my wife had a mid day nap (time change! I'm drunk and watching baseball but it's only 5 PM!!)

I was pretty surprised that Wilco's "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" wasn't picked....it was one of the first on my draft list but I never got to it.  In retrospect it would've fit my mix a lot better than some of the others.
For me, it's "I'm the Man Who Loves You" but yeah, they should have been taken.

Commentary: @KarmaPolice mix

Not much in the way of artists of which I'm unfamilar, so I kinda knew what to expect on this one in terms of genres.  I thought the mix flowed pretty well - definitely well done in that respect.  I tend to go either way on the old-school punk, it can be really hit or miss for me, a lot of it tends to blend together.  I have no particular problem with it, but a lot of it just doesn't stick with me.

Favorite stretch of songs:  has to be the last handful, definitely more my speed.  Arctic Monkeys, Hold Steady, and Sleater-Kinney are regulars for me as it is, and The Cars / DEVO are pretty solid.

Biggest surprise:  on first glance, I thought Kenny Rogers looked a little out of place, but I really enjoyed "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" and thought it fit well in the mix.  I'm not sure I'm going to be reaching for too much Kenny Rogers on my own, but I kinda thought I'd hate the song......and I quite enjoyed it.
@Steve Tasker

Sorry, man - I don't think I thanked you for the listen and write up.

I was just listening to another mix for the draft, and it reminded me of this post and song.  This is exactly what another poster stated (I think Mr. Mama?) in that part of these drafts is stumbling on #### you haven't hear for a bit.  This is the perfect example of that.  For whatever random reason I thought of a Cake song (that happened to turn out to be only 5 words long), but I stumbled on their remake of this song while looking and thinking - WTF have I heard this, and it lead me back to the Kenny Rogers song.  Probably listened to it 10x that night.

@Ilov80s

I am rube when it comes to a lot of booze.  Most of the time I am just drinking #### on the rocks.  Used to drink a lot of whiskey that way, but lost my taste for that a tad over the years.  I honestly never had tried gin (enough to taste it - probably in a Long Island or something else that has 6 boozes) until about a year ago.  We got a bottle for a Christmas party gag gift from my wife's work.  NOBODY wanted the ####, and I can't pass up booze, so I took it.   Mixed it with a little lemonade, and fell in love.  Wife thinks it's the worst ####, so I get it to myself, which is another bonus.   Blah, blah, anyway - tonight it's gin on the rocks with a little bit of fresh lemon squeezed in it.   Is there something you recommend for the gin?

BTW I am about to start your mix.  :banned:
A friend's ex girlfriend drank gin and lemonade in the summer in the sun and it was always ####### delicious. I   lemonade and Gin seems to go well with it. What am I supposed to drink with fruity lemon juice? Sure, vodka is fine but I'll drink too much and die. Gin seems better than rye, rum, tequila (though maybe not :o :oldunsure: ), so I think go with it.

OOOOF.  You just reminded me of the time I got puke-drunk on Purplesaurus Rex Kool-Aid and Rum (the only things we had in the room).  Still can't stomach the smell of grape Kool-Aid to this day.

If you enjoy smelling like a Christmas tree the next day, you will enjoy gin.

I don't know what got me into Elvis Costello but it happened in the past couple years so it may have been a FFA draft. I loooooooooooove Beyond Belief like few other songs (though I feel like that one came from "The Pitchfork 500 :bag: ) and "Man Out of Time" but have added "Pills & Soap", "No Action" and "Lipstick Vogue" to my favourites playlist in recent times (I think Pump it Up and Radio, Radio are on there too). If you're in this draft and turned me on to any of these songs, stand up and take credit, if not, everyone listen to and love them  .

I think I have to backtrack a bit and I now remember that on both my trips to Cuba (I'm Canadian, I'm allowed), rum and lemondae was absolutely amazing.

Were I not doing recent songs only, this 100% would have been on my mix. This song was massive for literally one week in the mid 00s. @JZilla in honour of your trip, a Vegas band that isn't The Killers (or Imagine Dragons)...

Ah chocolate girl, well you're looking like somethin' I wantAh your little Asian friend well, she can come if she wantsI want all those self-conscious girls who try to hide who they are with make-upYou know it's the girl with the frown with the tight pants i really want to shake up

Louis XIV - Finding Out True Love is Blind

Youtube took me from this to The Darkness - "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" which is another mammoth 6+ words song.

Can't explain all the feelings that you're making me feel
My heart's in overdrive and you're behind the steering wheel

Touching you, touching me
Touching you, God you're touching me

I had a firm grip on his music tastes until we started watching WWE.  Now most of the #### he wants to add on his mix is from that, and he asks me to delete stuff that I had on there.  :kicksrock:

I guess I still have hope with the 2 year old.  Of course one of the things she says is "WWE", so the battle might be lost before I really start...

Another random music observation - not sure who it was who was that was pimpin' LCD Soundsystem so much during these drafts, but thank you!!  I am not sure they are better than Radiohead like you suggested, but I have loved the #### out of them since I have given them a serious listen.  Doesn't hurt that Nancy Whang is seriously hot....

I'm working with my boss and boss' boss tomorrow or I'd keep going with you. :(

I'm all in for tomorrow night though :excited:
I will try to save enough gin for tomorrow too.

This is why I usually don't have this #### in the house much - it seems to disappear in a couple days somehow....

JFC I love gin.  On to the 2nd glass - 0 chance anything is getting done with these damn taxes tonight.
That's what gin will do to you. It's pretty much the only alcohol that I regularly drink.  I prefer it in martini-form most of the time--actually just finished one.  G&T's occasionally.

If you have a 4th, good luck with the kids tomorrow morning.  :suds:

Another random music observation (yes, I have realized I don't have the mindframe for mixes and am just listening to random #### on my playlists), is that The '59 Sound is one of the best songs of the last decade or so.  NEVER gets old.

Just pouring my 4th.  Should be a fun day.  I only have one that stays at home - the other is 10yrs old and goes to school.

Maybe a good day to turn on some Sesame Street and cuddle up with her on the recliner?

@Yo Mama

Finished up the mix. It's like a tale of four segments. One is traditional rock, the next sort of newer rock, the other hip hop, and then a flourish of newer metal at the end. I dug it. Nothing out of left field here; actually, I feel like I've heard every one of these besides KRS-One's song, and that's because I didn't follow his solo career. But they're all solid tracks, including that Bowie cover by Nirvana that everyone (including me) loves. Just good, clean songs that happen to have long titles. No gimmicks, just good stuff.

Top five:

5) The Skills To Pay The Bills - Beastie Boys

4) Rhythm (Devoted To The Art of Moving Butts) - A Tribe Called Quest

3) Close Your Eyes (And Count To ####) - Run The Jewels

2) This Cocaine Make Me Feel Like I'm On This Song - SOAD

1) You Think I Ain't Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like A Millionaire - QOTSA

Forgot about that one

gave simey's a listen and had too much country music for me although "you make my heart beat too fast" was good. other than that, lots of solid choices but "come on over(turn me on)" is my fav track- I like most of their work together.
