MixTape Draft - 6+ word titles. Finish your draft and listen to mixes! (1 Viewer)

I spotted this white cat for the first time at the end of January when I was at the colony later than usual. It was running through the storage units lot, and I didn't see it again until recently when I have been out there late again. Evidentally it has been coming out at night. I saw white cat last week right before dark trying to eat the feral food, but one of the ferals (Jamie) chased it off. I spotted white cat again Sunday night at 7:30 slipping through a fence behind the liquor store, and then strolling towards the cat shack. It ran when it saw me. Monday I decided to set a trap behind the liquor store to see if it would come out again around that time. I sat in my car keeping my head low so it wouldn't spot me.  At 7:35 the cat appeared, and went in the trap! It freaked out like they always do when the trap closes, but later it tried to smell my hand through the trap, and the next morning it let me scratch the side of its face through the trap. That isn't the usual behavior of a wild feral, and so I called Dr. East and she took the cat. The cat is a female, and has had human contact at some point in its life or it wouldn't let us touch it. There is a high probability it is a dump off at the colony. No chip. The cat was scared at first, but is friendly today according to Dr. East. She will be spayed next week since Dr. E doesn't want her to have a setback with her socialization, and she will stay at Dr. E's cat clinic until they find her a home.  A better life is ahead for this gal.
That's one fortunate  and adorable cat, Simey.  Thank you for giving a kitty a paw.

@Bonzai was up next:

I'll start off saying 80% of his mix could have been drafted by me - and I was a big fan of the songs/bands I was not familiar with. The mix flowed real well also.

Of the bands I had not hear before my favorites were Chocolate Watchband, The Third Bardo and Guided By Voices (not sure why I never listened to them before because I've heard so much about them.
Thanks, gb.  Yeah, I remember from the last draft you were taking stuff I wanted.

GBV are one of my all time favorites. There is a lot there, but worth diving into.  Alien Lanes and Bee Thousand are good spots to start imo.

I need to get around to listening to some of these things.

I can't Spotify.  If someone wants to help, that would be grand.

It should be called, "My Big Six-Inch (Record)".

. I didn't care much for the cover of the Wizard of Oz song but at the same time, I never realized how great of a song it is - if that makes any sense. .
It does, actually. I honestly only heard the song because some one posted it on Facebook the other day and since it kind of fit my mix I checked to see if it was on Spotify. While I do not dislike his version as much as you, I listened to some of his other stuff and it's not very good at all - in fact some of it is awful. I think he's trying to be a Jon Mayer type, but he's a very pale comparison.

But the song is actually incredibly well written. Very clever lyrics and a great melody. I was actually looking up versions of "If I only had a brain" to possibly use but then Oz tool the original. But same with that song - and the lyrics are arguably even better.

Mountain Dew, lol.
It reminds me of being at a show when some older dude turned to me and said I hope they play "Ashes of My Mind" - and I just said "yes". I believe he likely meant "Attics of My Life" but not quite sure. It was an inside joke with friends for a few years after that.

@Steve Tasker

Top 3 songs that I wasn't too familiar with

Okkervil River- Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe

Los Campesinos- This is How You Spell "HAHAHA, We Destroyed the Hopes and Dreams of a Generation of Faux-Romantics"

Small Black- No One Wants It to Happen to You

Thoughts

Using that Sufjan instrumental as a prelude was the best move of any mix yet. I should have paid attention to the order of my playlist a bit more. Also, I wish Sufjan would just focus on composing music. It seems like there is a lot of untapped potential. Songs 1 and 2 flow seamlessly. Song 3 as well. Great listen all the way through. You found the first Tame Impala song I've ever liked. I always want to hate Fall Out Boy, but I just can't. Los Campesinos has to have the best song title in the draft. I'm groovin to Small Black and around this point I remember you drafted Whitney Houston and  I am not sure how you are going to fit it into this mix. It was a smooth transition though with that Tribe song. I hadn't noticed the Billy Ocean get drafted- that was fantastic. The Calvin Harris is the one song that kind of  wrecked the flow for me. If it went Ocean to MJ to Whitney, I might have broke my marble.

Best 1-2 punch

The first two songs just roll so well.

I had a lot of trouble figuring out how to shoehorn the final 6 songs into the mix.  In retrospect it definitely would've been more cohesive to just skip the pop and hip-hop entirely.  I thought about ending it with Rihanna but figured Whitney for the ending song was just too good.  Geto Boys and Rihanna songs feel the most out of place to me, but it is what it is.  Thanks for the listen.

In his defense, he probably inhaled some ashes in his mind.

I'm listening to Stella Blew in the car now. :-)

In my defense, I did then change the song title to "Mountain View." Swear to God.

:lmao:

yo mama was up next. hip hop and rap aren't my thing either(big surprise right?) but if I have to listen to it I prefer old school like the beasties and public enemy. Also never heard the original version of I could just kill a man- not bad but prefer the rage version.

of course I dug all the classic rock and also tracks i forgot about by sublime and incubus. The non-rap part of the mix gets a B+

@simey  was #2 on deck today

not sure anybody's mix that made my ####### pucker up quite as much as her's did when I clicked on it.

2.  Marshall Tucker Band -

I had heard this song before, but this is the one that I hinted at that just brought back memories/feelings.  I assume ( and the year would fit) that this is one that parents listened the #### out of back in the day.  I probably listened to this one 5x+ today, can't get enough.
What does that bolded blue sentence mean?  :oldunsure:

Marshall Tucker Band is from South Carolina, and they have played in NC since my youth, and have always been a staple on the radio. I've seen them many a times through the years. I even saw them play in a saloon in Florida when I lived there in the early 90s. They actually played in Raleigh about 3 weeks ago. Several of the original band members are deceased now, but the lead singer is still around. He can't carry a note as long as he once did, but his stories he tells have gotten longer.  :D  I saw them a couple years ago at Merlefest, and he was a chatter box. Anyway, I love the flute and piano solos in the song, and it's just a great toe tappin' tune that lightens up my mood whenever I hear it. I think you might be starting to get in touch with your inner country/americana/bluegrass self.

Alright - This next one goes out to the girl in the front row, in the Anthrax t-shirt that you can barely read because of her massive, mammarium, mcgiillguttys, because after the show I want you to....

Come On Over To Mah Crib- The Meatmen

:TESCO:

Also got in mr ected's mix before break today. I have to say that so far this is the best mix I've heard. The only tracks I never heard of ( bob mould and guster) turned out to be the weakest but weren't painfully bad.

never heard the bacharach/bnl cover before and it was better than expected.

Always liked the tune by primitive radio gods but never knew the name of the song or band-thanks for that!

Really enjoyed this one and it made the time pass while working-good job.

going to play waingros after break

For some reason the links no longer work on my home comp but work fine on work one and phone. prefer listening on comp as I can listen in order and fast forward if needed. plus Im painting in a library and have to listen with my broken earbuds. Oh well-back to work

A friend's ex girlfriend drank gin and lemonade in the summer in the sun and it was always ####### delicious. I   lemonade and Gin seems to go well with it. What am I supposed to drink with fruity lemon juice? Sure, vodka is fine but I'll drink too much and die. Gin seems better than rye, rum, tequila (though maybe not :o :oldunsure: ), so I think go with it.

If you enjoy smelling like a Christmas tree the next day, you will enjoy gin.
One night during college I puked my guts out after drinking a lot of gin. It was like throwing up pine needles, and I burped up pine taste the next day. I haven't drank it since. When I drink martinis, I drink vodka martinis.

I keep thinking Dr. Oct and Rick Roll Action are the same person in posts.  Its the black and white head shot I believe.  I can never keep track of who is who around here.  Damn ADD.

@Yo Mama

Finished up the mix. It's like a tale of four segments. One is traditional rock, the next sort of newer rock, the other hip hop, and then a flourish of newer metal at the end. I dug it. Nothing out of left field here; actually, I feel like I've heard every one of these besides KRS-One's song, and that's because I didn't follow his solo career. But they're all solid tracks, including that Bowie cover by Nirvana that everyone (including me) loves. Just good, clean songs that happen to have long titles. No gimmicks, just good stuff.

Top five:

5) The Skills To Pay The Bills - Beastie Boys

4) Rhythm (Devoted To The Art of Moving Butts) - A Tribe Called Quest

3) Close Your Eyes (And Count To ####) - Run The Jewels

2) This Cocaine Make Me Feel Like I'm On This Song - SOAD

1) You Think I Ain't Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like A Millionaire - QOTSA
Thanks for the listen. I tried my best to find good transition songs between the various styles.

One of the major moves of becoming an adult.   :D

waingro's mix took me to lunch hour. Another collection of songs/artists Im familiar with. Even on shuffle this had great flow as all the music is pretty similar.

hadn't heard bobby caldwell, bobby bland or los manolos before but enjoyed them all.

joe cocker has the best beatles' covers and wanted to draft this one myself.

great santana chioce too- i was looking for something by him and came up empty. another great mix and a fun listen.

nice work on the coda picks, limp.

I got through @rockaction's playlist... funny how similar things can be so dissimilar. lots of noisey guitar driven stuff that is part of my MO, but out of my wheelhouse. overall felt like a fever dream from my youth- slow, psychadelic, whispery stuff mixed in with screaming/noise.

don't think I ever really listened to the Deftones- that track was good in a very Smashing Pumpkins vibe... like they used the exact same guitars, tuning and production or something.

don't remember that S&G song either- nice.

loooooved the Shangrilahs tune, and will be checking them out more. Bat for Lashes first single, IIRC, used a sample or was inspired by them.

Cool. Thanks for checking it out, floppo. Second time in a few months somebody had described my artistic taste/output as a "fever dream." Weird.

Deftones do have Smashing Pumpkins in them. Most '90s guitar-driven bands have some Pumpkins there. The Deftones main influence; however, is Hum, another '90s guitar act.

Glad you like the Shangri-La's. I think they were very cool. The first punk single "New Rose" begins with a quote from "The Leader Of The Pack" and the New York Dolls were very influenced by them.

Anyway, thanks for listening again. I'm a little slow on my listening today (tired), but I'll get there.

Listened to @KarmaPolice list this morning.

I had fun revisiting some of the old school punk stuff, particularly the Buzzcocks, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and Sonic Youth. Brought me back to my early college days hanging out with some guys that were big into the punk scene.

You had a tough job transitioning from punk to blues/r&b and back but it actually flowed nicely. Who else could bridge songs between Muddy Waters and the White Stripes better than Chuck Berry. That was a fun sequence and testament to his huge influence on rock.

The Devo/Cars/Hold Steady/Arctic Monkeys finish was fun and flowed well too.

Nice work KP, fun listen.

Listened to @Eephus mix this morning while working out and on the drive into work:

Loved this mix - flowed real well - and just loved almost every song. Knew about 35-40% of the mix before listening but some of my favorites were the ones I had not heard.

The opening two songs were a clever interplay on the Cole song title followed by the response Camera Obscura "Llyod, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken" (and I really loved this song).

Other highlights from songs I was not familiar with: The Veils, Manic Street Preachers (may have heard this one before), the Orwells and House of Love.

I wanted "What's So Funny..." for my mix, but it fit in better here anway.

Listened to @Raging weasel mix and thought it flowed really well. It started off soft but really got rolling through the end.

The first half of the mix is solid. Liked the Spanish guitar parts in Etta's version of Mans World and lovelovelove the Ten Years After song. A few other familiar songs in here.

Soundgarden is really where this mix starts to get going though. I love how the drum groove drives this tune but then following that song up with Metallica was just excellent.

Iron Maiden was a band that I never really dove into but have always enjoyed anything I've heard and have always appreciated their talent. Glad to sample more of them here.

Overall, I thought it was solid draft that was well put together.

listened to @Bonzai (finally figured this out-lol) after lunch. Looking over the list it was about 50/50 of stuff I knew and never heard of. This mix is right in my wheelhouse and I thought it was great and flowed well even on shuffle.

of the stuff i never heard the 3rd bardo and foxygen were my favs. Not a big fan of dylan but those tracks fit perfect here.

Surprisingly the beach boys and kinks had the weakest songs of this set.

great job-my fav so far!

thanks for listening and glad you liked it. Yours was very good too and was my fav until I just played bonzai's.

Appreciate the review but especial glad to introduce the Caldwell song to someone as it's one that pops up in my mix at least once daily.

The Santana song is a new one for me too. I stumbled upon it looking for something from them to draft. Loved it as soon as I heard it.

Foxygen's "How Can You Really" got me turned on to them.  Good stuff.

I am rube when it comes to a lot of booze.  Most of the time I am just drinking #### on the rocks.  Used to drink a lot of whiskey that way, but lost my taste for that a tad over the years.  I honestly never had tried gin (enough to taste it - probably in a Long Island or something else that has 6 boozes) until about a year ago.  We got a bottle for a Christmas party gag gift from my wife's work.  NOBODY wanted the ####, and I can't pass up booze, so I took it.   Mixed it with a little lemonade, and fell in love.  Wife thinks it's the worst ####, so I get it to myself, which is another bonus.   Blah, blah, anyway - tonight it's gin on the rocks with a little bit of fresh lemon squeezed in it.   Is there something you recommend for the gin?

BTW I am about to start your mix.  :banned:
I usually just take my gin in a dirty martini. I'm a noob when it comes to gin. Also, my playlist might have failed since it was pretty much made for late night gin drinking. I almost put a picture of Bogart from the "gin joint" scene in Casablanca on  my playlist. Instead I went with a drunk Hemingway looking at the ##### that turned it's back on him.

@El Floppo

floppo's half dozen of one, 6 others

A nearly perfect mix. If mine is a "fever dream," this is perfectly logical, dreamy, heavy, punky, indie, and just wonderful. There isn't a bad track on it.

A+

I hate to compare -- and won't do that again -- but that grade should say what I think of it. I'd really encourage anybody with a rockist bent to listen to it. I wouldn't skip this.

Top 5 of those I've never heard:

5) I Got A Thing, You Got A Thing, We All Got A Thing - Funkadelic

4) Second Last Line Of The Nation - So Cow

3) I Lived My Life To Stand In The Shadows Of Your Heart - A Place To Bury Strangers

2) The Past Is A Grotesque Animal - Of Montreal

1) Pass The Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind - Yo La Tengo

Thanks, flop. That was sublime.

Top 3 songs that I wasn't too familiar with

The Tragically Hip- In a World Possessed by the Human Mind

Phantogram- You Don't Get Me High Anymore

The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die  - I Can Be Afraid of Anything

Thoughts

We could totally chill. Every song except 2 are right up my alley. I mean, this sounds just like all the annual playlists I make of new music. Awesome playlist that I could listen to all day. The big misses were the 2 Spoon songs. I know I am in the minority here, but I except for 1 or 2 songs, I just can't stand Spoon.

Best 1-2 punch

Man, this is tough since I like almost every song a lot but I'm going to go with the closing songs for Maggie and Pete.
