Round 20

The Mamas and The Papas - Dream A Little Dream Of Me

Sad news in my community today. We lost my 3 month old nephew. He was having complications soon after his birth and was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease. He was very strong and fought very hard.

While in the hospital, a music therapist came in and sang this song to him. We could tell that it brought him joy so we sang it to him often.

I dedicate my last pick to baby Noah (aka Bean Cake)

Not a theme (as the song suggests), just a tune that I enjoy.

Christopher Cross - Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)
Got this one, you were missing 17, so I slid this one and your Jim Croce song back one.

Wow, that's horrible. Sorry for your loss.

Just finished listening to rockaction's playlist. Not a premium member so can only listen on shuffle and it seems I broke my ear buds as only 1 side is working :( .

I had only heard 4 of these tunes before and didn't know most of the bands but it was an enjoyable listen. Surprisingly the Who song beat out the rap song for worst track.

Really liked the mogwai/explosions in the sky instrumentals, will look into these both later.

That sucks-sorry for your loss :(

Thanks for taking the time to listen. People often say they will, then don't. I generally have learned to listen, but not to promise to, as generally I select a few of the more interesting looking ones.

I agree that the instrumentals are the strongest part of my draft (punk, post-rock, and hip hop are my three favorite genres) and almost went with more post-rock artists, but I wanted a diverse selection.

RD 20:  I Don't Want To Ever Come Down - 13th Floor Elevators

60s psychedelic rock, one of the earlier ones.  I didn't know these guys (though I had heard some of their stuff and didn't recognize the band) until I saw the documentary on the main guy, Roky called "You're Gonna Miss Me."  Highly recommend.

These guys should have been bigger.

song link.

I'll stick with Roky and his crew.  Sorry for the early pick.

Just in case I'm still on the list for needing a RD 20 pick ...

Had started listening to The Dreaded Marco's list before Raging reviewed mine. All I can say is I'm not premium and don't want the free trial (I never cancel those things, nor can I even figure out how) so I won't be able to comment on the flow of the mix, only the individual songs in the mix.

Which is cool. So far, I got Clap Your Hands, which was cool but got redundant at around 3:30, and Eno, which was awesome. I've always wanted to listen to him, never took the time.

Full review TK, just wanted to point out that order won't be a consideration to my ears, which is sort of important for a mix. Oh well.

Eta* this is impossible without an order. Spiritualized, I thought, was boring until I realized that it was the intro. Then it all made sense. Im going to try and figure out the free trial deal and go from there. Until then, I'll review from YouTube. Links and lists would help when posting for those that haven't and are endeavoring to take the time.

I feel like I am a walking commercial for Spotify, but premium is probably the best $10 I spend in a month - and that includes food for the kids ;)

Yep, but I get Napster/Rhapsody and they have a contract with Recess Records, which indicates they do better with punk labels.

For example, my twentieth round selection is on Napster but not on Spotify.

But if we keep drafting, I might switch so I can review, too.

Just finished off Eephus' mix and it's not really my thing. I liked the first 2 songs and how they play of each other-what's the story there? Never heard the orwells before and really like their sound so will look into them some more.

Hollies,Bowie, bangles,Elvis,BRMC,Morrissey and the Ramones were all solid but didn't care for the rest.

Gotcha.

The 2 year old and I are listening to your mix while we eat lunch.  I had tears in my eyes from laughing - we hit the Dillinger Four song and she started air drumming (something I do way too much evidently), shaking her head back and forth, and saying "crazy!!".   So, I guess it's gets a Freya stamp of approval.

Yeah, just finished listening to rockaction's mix. Love all the punk/punk influenced songs. Rancid's song about OP Ivy (my favorite punk band) was nice to hear. I can't recall seeing that song in any of our previous drafts. I had never heard anything from The Underground Railroad to Candyland but I will be tracking down some more of their tunes.

Thanks for listening, sn0mm1s. Yeah URTC is very much worth a listen, IMO. They get great reviews from the punk/alt/indie press, and deservedly so. There aren't that many great punk bands around these days and Toys That Kill/URTC are among them. Yuppie Hip Hop Ad, with its mentions of Michael J. Fox and Manute Bol, is absurdism at a high level.

I'm sorry for your loss, Waingro. GB Baby Bean Cake

Finished the jzilla mix and this is more in my wheelhouse for the most part. had 3 songs I would have liked on my list especially the beatles I want you to close out my tracks.

didn't like steve harley or the sparks but the rest was listenable. I like hawkwind and floyd but these aren't the best songs by them but giving a pass due to the restrictions.

pleasant surprise of the mix was mudhoney-solid track and going to dive deeper into them.

Probably my last review for the day but will get back at it in the a.m.

Thanks for the feedback Weas! If you want to dive deeper into Mudhoney, I recommend the album Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge

Finished @Eephus mix.

Solid list from beginning to end. I didn't have to fight any urges to skip a song. A couple songs that I had completely forgotten about that I added to my library were Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress) and Waiting for the Great Leap Forward. Up next Jzilla.

I started listening to rockaction's list just before bedtime last night.  It started off with the Everly Brothers and Simon & Garfunkel but got a lot more intense after that.  I made it through 3 or 4 more songs before deciding it was probably the wrong time.  There were a couple of songs with spoken word bumpers that made the transitions interesting in a good way.

I listened to about a third of sn0mm1s' mix on my ride into work this morning and should finish it up tonight.  The part I've listened to so far has a nice mid-tempo groove, even the segue from rock to rap was pretty smooth.

We are short 7 picks (5 of which are from Limp Ditka (16-20), and a 20th round from HOV34 and Bonzai).

Once we have all of these in, I will be able to publish some data from the draft.

Saying the transition from rock to rap was pretty smooth is probably you being a little generous. Perhaps "It isn't nearly as jarring as expected" is a little more accurate . I usually try to get at least 1 rap hip-hop song in my mixes but they definitely don't help the overall flow.

Can totally see that. Thanks for the spin. If you give it another whirl, let me know what you think if you get a chance.

I'm going to punt Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr's tune, and I'm replacing it with James Carr's The Dark End of The Street.

I need some flute and barroom piano for my last song in the draft...

Listened to simey's this afternoon, and it was quite good, except for the Buffett, and that's OK.. I just cut out a couple minutes early!

Got through 3 mixes today and started the 4th now.  For some reason I wasn't following Raging Weasel's mix, so I added that now too and will get to that.

@rockaction

I'll be honest, I thought I was going to be in trouble after the first couple songs.  Just not my cup of tea.  Never really liked S&G for whatever reason.  Then Deftones hit and I was more along for the ride, and liked just about everything else.  I was hit or miss with the instrumental songs.  It's something else that I appreciate more than I like, which is ironic coming from the guy that says I barely pay attention to lyrics at first, but I guess there has to be something there for me.  Anyway, just like in the past drafts, I am going to try to list my favorite 3 new songs I got out of the mixes, so...

1.  Modest Mouse - Whenever You Breathe Out, I Breathe In.

I have gotten more and more into Modest Mouse over the last couple years, but when I was looking, I guess it was mainly just 2 of their albums, and hadn't heard this song before.

2.  Dillinger Four - The Great American Going Out of Business Sale

Already mentioned my daughter and I rockin' out to this one.

3.  Mission of Burma - That's How I Escaped My Certain Fate

Like somebody else posted, I really liked the punk stuff on the mix.  I don't know how I know that kidzbop song, but yeah... There were a couple songs on here that I had written down before I went with the short songs, so glad to see them drafted - Deftones, Weezer, The Who.   Good mix!
