MixTape Draft - 6+ word titles. Finish your draft and listen to mixes! (3 Viewers)

I drafted almost entirely for flow this time around with no self imposed requirements to represent all of the continents or Black lesbians.  I ended up with a very conventional rock list ranging from 1971 to 2017.  It's predominantly English with a handful of American and one Canadian group.  It's also overwhelmingly Caucasian--I think the only exceptions are Phil Lynott, Barry Adamson (from Magazine) and Bowie's backing musicians.

With one pick to go, I'm pretty happy with the outcome of the mix.  It takes kind of an arc from the cute matching Lloyd Cole/Camera Obscura cuts at the beginning building toward some louder punkish stuff in the middle before descending back through more pop material at the end.  The song I'll pick this afternoon will close the mix on a suitably optimistic note if anyone listens that far.

Interesting, mine is the opposite - put the punk-ish stuff at the start, country and Aretha in the middle, and tried to pick up the pace again with alt rock/newer stuff at the end.

With 20 songs, you can make a few long sweeping turns.  It's certainly possible to have 20 songs with a similar vibe but that's a long time to keep pogo-ing.

20 - Underground Railroad To Candyland - Livin' In The Straw (In The Summer Of Fraud)

Link

Todd Congelliere's side project features members from Toys That Kill. It's a surf rock/punk hybrid, and is as good a place as any for me to end this draft. Critically acclaimed by punk and alternative music writers, this band is definitely catchy, with shout-along lyrics and infectious choruses. Congelliere is head of Recess Records, which now hosts a diverse punk roster and maybe the country's best punk mail order. He has been in bands such as the aforementioned Toys That Kill, FYP, and his own solo output.

An impressive guy, and a perfect band for me.

This particular song is from Oct. 2007, and is presumably about the insurance/banking/other financial crises that swept the globe.

Mix TK.

20.03 - Sublime, We're Only Going to Die for Our Arrogance - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsX3Ybe062A

I finally get a Sublime song in a draft. This is an older song of theirs from their first album and is a cover from a Bad Religion song.

This will be a nice transition song on my playlist from my funkier stuff to my harder stuff due to how the song progresses.

Full playlist to be posted soon.

I have taken them a couple times in drafts, but it seemed like a good song to put after Sonic Youth...

20.xx:  SLEATER-KINNEY - I WANNA BE YOUR JOEY RAMONE

LINK

20.xx  The Feelies - The Boy With The Perpetual Nervousness

Hey @KarmaPolice, let me know when I can take a mulligan selection.  Thanks.
@The Dreaded Marco

How about we give people a few hours to come in and finish up their drafts.  I know we have some stragglers and somebody said they would catch up tomorrow, but we don't seem to be too worried about snipes over the last few rounds, so tonight should be fine.  How about we give people 5 hours (just a random #) to come in and finish their drafts and people can start taking mulligans at 9pm est.  That way we can still start getting mixes up and posted tonight.

Gonna run around with the kids outside (finally a day in the 50s!) and make supper.  I will post the link to my mix and also start linking people's mixes in the OP for easy access in the future.  Thanks again to Mr. Ected and Northern Voice for basically running the show with the spreadsheet and draft mixes.

Also thanks to all of you drafting - this was a fun draft as usual.  Lots of music taken I am not familiar with so it should be fun listening to these mixes, and I will post reviews as I go of stuff that I loved that was new to me.

Double dipping into artists I took earlier in the draft since I have a feeling neither song would be picked otherwise - and they should be picked!

Round 20

Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want - The Smiths
been really hard not taking this one each round- love this song.
Honestly, could've been my Round 1 but I am positive I took it in a previous draft. I was leaving it for someone else.

Nice.  It's amazing how many songs I love but completely forgot about.

Alright, here is the link for my playlist:

Overcompensating

I hinted at it at the start, but it sounded like a good idea so I ran with it.  I drafted all songs with long titles, but short run times.  Thought I would keep it under an hour (looks like the mix is only 53 mins long!) and take all songs that were less than 3 mins.  It was a little bit of a challenge b/c there were a lot of songs that I wanted that were just barely over 3min, but a man's got to have principles.  I was also tricky trying to find different styles so that it wasn't just 20 songs of punk and songs that still felt complete in less than 3mins.  Maybe not flow-wise, but the length of the mix should be something that Eephus can appreciate ;)

Here is the final list of my draft songs in order:

Talking Heads - Thank You for Sending Me An Angel

Buzzcocks - Even Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)

The Clash - I'm So Bored with the USA

Black Flag - Beat My Head Against the Wall

Circle Jerks - When the #### Hits the Fan

The Kinks - All Day and All of the Night

CCR - It Came Out of the Sky

Neil Young - What Did You Do To My Life?

Kenny Rogers - Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town

Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)

Muddy Waters - You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had

Chuck Berry - School Day (Ring Ring Goes the Bell)

The White Stripes - I'm Finding it Harder to Be a Gentlemen

The Dead Milkmen - The Thing That Only Eats Hippies

Sonic Youth - In the Mind of the Bourgeois Reader

Sleater-Kinney - I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone

DEVO - The Day My Baby Gave Me a Surprise

The Cars - Got A Lot On My Head

The Hold Steady - You Can Make Him Like You

Arctic Monkeys - Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?

Thanks to anybody who listens, and I hope you enjoy the mix!

19:22 - Emerson, Lake, & Palmer - Karn Evil 9, First Impression, Part2. (1973 (6 Words)

Interesting for this song, the length of the portions of the entire song are longer than the whole song; which is Karn Evil 9, which obviously doesn't have a long enough title! This is my favorite part of this song!

Teenage Eephus was bothered by how the First Impression was split between side 1 & 2 of the record.

I probably just needed to get laid.

Amazing how kids now-a-days have no idea what a hassle that was!!

ETA: The part about records (tapes too!), playing one side at a time, not the getting laid part! ;)

Continuing my dominoes style link to my previous two picks, taking this one for the song title alone (not the best track on what is not even a good album).  I'll probably use this as my mix title.

Sadler (formerly of Drivin' and Cryin') is currently the lead guitarist in Jason Isbell's The 400 Unit, hence the link.

Quick post - will add link later

7.14 Billy Haley and His Comets - (We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock

@Hov34 OTC

@El Floppo on deck
Heard a few nuggets about this one last night on Little Steven's Underground Garage

(1) Was the "B" side to a single that went nowhere

(2) Lead guitarist got $21 to play the solo

(3) Recorded in two takes and spliced together - they only had 30 minutes left of studio time after the "A" side took six takes and 2.5 hours
