MixTape Draft - 6+ word titles. Finish your draft and listen to mixes! (1 Viewer)

RD 20:  I Don't Want To Ever Come Down - 13th Floor Elevators

60s psychedelic rock, one of the earlier ones.  I didn't know these guys (though I had heard some of their stuff and didn't recognize the band) until I saw the documentary on the main guy, Roky called "You're Gonna Miss Me."  Highly recommend.

These guys should have been bigger.

song link.

19.17 The Veils - The Tide That Left and Never Came Back

I've evangelized for this band in previous drafts but I think it's been a while.

This song is from their first album; the only one with the original lineup.  Finn Andrews was still a teenager when he wrote it.  It still appears occasionally on the band's setlists over a dozen years later but is now performed as a down tempo acoustic encore rather than the Smiths doing Springsteen vibe I get from the original record.

Oh jeez. We can't pick Rd. 20 until 4 PM EST. Here comes the run. Anarchy!

eta* Again, not a stickler, just trying to help KP out here.

Sorry.  I'll take it back.
I don't care personally, Binky. I was just asking about the rules for the day late last night and happen to know them. I think it's to facilitate discussion later into the day, though with the mixes, who knows?

(psst...nobody take that song. Honest mistake)

Agree.  I like stretching them out to make for better/more discussion.  Still half asleep - screwed up.

I like this. What year did it come out? Reminds me of another band picked in this draft, Hot Hot Heat.

eta* 2004. Makes sense

BTW ...I think I might take a different song so it's open if someone else wants it.

So do people decided on their theme before the draft?  Take a song or two and see a theme form?  Say "#### themes" and take what they want?

I had a couple simple ones I was thinking of.  Took the Arctic Monkeys song first because that one fit a few themes as I decided which way to go.  I had thought about just doing a UK draft which wouldn't have been too bad.  Also thought about doing one with all the titles also being questions, but decided that would've been too hard for me.  Ended up with something that pushed me a tad, but still wasn't too horrible to find songs for.
Theme makes it sound so much more complicated than what I did.   I started off thinking I'd go all country / southern rock but then changed it to songs I like from bad movies.  Brain-farted in round 3 as that movie rocked.  Round 8-on I drafted from good movies but took from bad when the opportunity presented itself (aka, I remembered or heard a song).  Doesn't help that I'm doing this blind (didn't make a list, just taking what comes to mind)

I almost drafted this song on several occasions.  I love this band---Nux Vomica is my personal favorite but there is goodness on all their/his albums.

Finn Andrews is super talented---son of XTC's Barry Andrews.

huh... never heard of them and obviously missed eephus proselytizing for them.

I like the sound of his voice off the top... not sure about the overall sound- but definitely diving in to check them out

I wanted a "rockish" side, and a "electronicish" side B.  Two songs by the same band was also part of the original plan, but some surprising snipes messed that up for me.

Mine are all post-2015

4 snipes are hurting the back end of this.

Really wanted "If This Tour Doesn't Kill You, I Will", "The Less I Know the Better", "Nobody Really Cares if You Go to the Party" and "An Ocean In Between the Waves". Pretty sure @Steve Tasker took all 4 of them

I thought about sequencing the Veils back to back with a different band his father was in but I couldn't get it to work in the mix.

The first Veils album (the one with the drafted song) is kind of an outlier.  Later incarnations of the band have drifted a bit toward the weird with more post-rock and Nick Cave-ish influences.  Their 2016 release was produced by El-P and included more synthetic sounds.  It wasn't totally successful but was a bold move for a band six albums into their career.

I had a plan when I drafted Otis Redding in round 1 but then completely abandoned that plan when I drafted Joe Cocker in round two.

That was the general idea, and also to play fair with some of the west coasters we have in the drafts.

   I like this idea.  Wish I would have thought of something like that.  There are a ton of good songs from bad movies, and I had a lot of the soundtracks to prove it.  (Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey)

I like this.  It means there will probably be a bunch of stuff I haven't heard before.

Would have been interesting if you could combine the 2.  2 songs from 10 bands - one rock, one electronic.   Not sure how many bands that would qualify though.

I just take songs I like that fit the rules of the draft. I mentioned earlier in this thread that "songs I like" is usually a good enough filter to prevent me from getting sniped with any sort of regularity. Scrolling through the main draft doc I see only about 10 songs that I considered taking that were taken by someone else. After my 20th pick, I will likely still have another 20 songs that fit this draft. I assume this means:

1) My taste in music is so different from most people that, if they hate my first few songs, they can just put me on ignore and not lose anything

2) My taste in music is so different from most people that, if they like my first few songs, they will like the majority of my playlist

3) My taste in music is so mainstream that I am not adding much to the draft other than a listenable playlist that people can enjoy without wasting their own picks on songs/artists that everyone already knows.

As long as I don't fall into category 1 all the time (in which case these drafts are masturbatory) I am putting together a decent draft for others.

Still went with my usual "stuff I like" theme, but I've been passing over a number of songs in favor of having my playlist more consistent and/or transition more smoothly.

This is definitely something I struggle with and was not very good at.  I guess I never learned the art of the mixtape back in the day, and if I did throw something together for somebody it was mostly "hey, this is some #### that I like and I think you might like".  Otherwise I just listened to albums.

That would have taken a ton of effort and I have been very busy.  Good idea though.
