MixTape Draft - Back to School edition. Make your picks and post your mix! (1 Viewer)

I never could figure out if this was shtick on the board, but yeah, I'm going in.

Now that we've been to California and Chicago, it's time to play to the draft's strengths and set

14.xx - SAIL - AWOLNATION

Nautical Studies - Admiral Law (maybe more to come!)

Happy Easter!

Need to add a song that I really like to address "Spring Break" for my "senior year" mix.

Round 14 - Luke Bryan - Spring Breakdown

I figure last draft I included a Nickelback song, so this one is probably from the same shallow part of the draft pool.  Song is the final single from Luke's collection of Spring Break EPs, which he would release as part of his now-discontinued free show series in Florida (not sure if someone else has stepped up, but probably).  Pretty cool 30-minute documentary about the shows on Palladia (now MTV Live) and CMT every once in a while.  The song is pretty straightforward, documenting how the artist would miss hanging with the spring breakers in the future, but looked fondly back on his participation in the series of shows.

Happy Easter everyone!

Figured this is a good one for the day.  My favorite Kanye song.

Yo Mama University

Course:  Religion 170

Course Title:  Jesus Walks

Instructor:  Kanye West

Course Description:  Do you want to talk to God, but are afraid to since you haven't spoken to him in a while?  Don't fear, in this course we discuss the resurrection of Jesus, what it means to us, and how to have a personal relationship with Him.

Instructor Commentary:  "I'm just trying to say the way that school need teachers, the way Kathie Lee needed Regis, that's the way I need Jesus."

Alright, finally we've made it all the way north. My mix here is definitely as bit more folky and acoustic than I usually go. We'll pick things up a bit but still stay in the same vein with a more uptempo rocker about Americans coming north to avoid the draft. This song is set in Thunder Bay - really really north. The things about it being so remote and desolate up North is that it’s a very good place to hideout. It’s common for criminals to head up there and it was also a popular place for draft dodgers. Thunder Bay is the most populous city in Northern Ontario, with just over 100 000 people.

11.14 - Sam Roberts - An American Draft Dodger in Thunder Bay
Alright, time to cross the border and head into Manitoba. Finally out of Ontario, One Great City is about the fine city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, or as it’s commonly known “Winterpeg”, it's the unofficial gateway to the Canadian prairie provinces and the largest city in Manitoba

12.05 - The Weakerthans - One Great City

A darker grey is breaking through a lighter one
A thousand sharpened elbows in the underground
That hollow hurried sound, feet on polished floor
And in the dollar store, the clerk is closing up
And counting loonies trying not to say

I hate Winnipeg

The driver checks the mirror seven minutes late
The crowded riders' restlessness enunciates
The Guess Who sucked, the Jets were lousy anyway

The prairies include the Canadian provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. The are flat as hell, marked my lots of wheat and not all that much to do, at least until you get to Alberta. I'm trying to take a cue from the last draft and work in some more female singers on this one. This is a really great song IMO

13.14 - Rah Rah - Prairie Girl

I am a darling
I am a dear
I'll cut your neck if you get too near
When the chips start falling
I'll stay here
I am a prairie girl
Straight to the bone
I'll cut you off on the drive back home
I spend my winters alone
Yeah there's just no place quite like home

Love it, but there's also a lot of bluegrass in your mix. Know that.

13.xx:  BUFFALO TOM - RULES

LINK

Everyone has their own myths
If not their father's troubles
It's the mother's kiss
But me would you save my life
Or take it away from me - stab me with a knife
Hey you could find it in yourself, I know
To fly across the cobalt sky
And leave me down below, I know

Sugar cane and coffee cup
Copper, steel and cattle
An annotated history
the forest for the fire
Where we open up the floodgates
Freedom reigns supreme
Fire on the hemisphere below

14.xx  Big Country - The Teacher

We talked and smoked all through the night

You led me where I had no sight

Till birdsong broke the morning light

And I was weak with strange delight

Teacher will you show to me

The bond between the land and sea

For I am new to mystery I want everything laid out for me

All of history

All of history

You showed me walls around the world

Where seekers passed and flags unfurled

You wove a tale in silken curls

And blew the mist in silver swirls

Teacher will you show to me

The bond between the land and sea

For I am new to mystery I want everything laid out for me

All of history

Teacher will you show to me

The bond between the land and sea

For I am new to mystery

Happy Easter y'all

I'm going religious here, if you don't like good Christian music don't add it to your mix, but if you do this is one of my favorites.  Elevation worship - resurrecting

Our church (yes, it's a mega church in the Bible belt) has a high school kid who rocks the drums at 6:20.  :headbang:

Nice one. I've been thinking about taking a different Jurassic 5 song, just not sure how to make it fit.
I know what you mean. Had a few others that I wanted to take that I couldn't fit into any subjects.

Eta- same with the RATM song.

This one doesn't change that much...

This was one of the first songs I thought of for this draft since it actually shouts out a lot of the country. We'll use it here as the introduction to Alberta. Alberta represents the Westernmost prairie province and the climate starts to change here, as we have more than just flat lands and wheat – specifically mountains, and oil, we’re also getting closer to the Ocean again now.

14.05 - Elliott Brood - Oh, Alberta

Oh Alberta, don't you cry, listen to me, it'll be alright, uh huh oh yeahDon't hate Saskatchewan, never meant no harm to anyoneManitoba, don't you know you're out where you won't make it homeBack to OntarioUp in the Yukon, I hit that bong, and then I turned up the stereoThought about OntarioP.E.I, PotatoP.E.I, PotatoDown In Newfoundland, started a band and we played late into the nightDrank 'till sunlight

And this might be my favourite song I'll have on the mix. It's definitely the one I've played the most. I've drafted these guys before but they have become one of my very favourite bands over the past few years so I'll likely just keep on drafting them. We are now officially beyond the prairies! Frank is an Alberta town on the Rocky Mountains. Frank was a once prosperous mining town in the early 1900’s. Much of the city was destroyed by a rock slide in 1903, which is the subject of this song. It's sweet and sad and beautiful.

15.13 - The Rural Alberta Advantage - Frank, AB

My Love I will hold on to your touch
Until there's nothing left of us
.... save you from this life

And the cold depths of the rocky clutch
Won't take away our love
.... save you from this life

and I'll hold ..... I'll hold on to your touch
'til there's nothing left of us
.... save you from this life

I'll hold ..... I'll hold on to your touch
'til they find the bones of us
.... save you from this life

And under the rubble of the mountain that tumbled
I'll hold you forever

They'll build up another on the bodies of our brothers
I'll love you forever

Round 15

Category - School Dance

At The Hop - Sha Na Na

This is live at Woodstock. Yes, I know right? Sha-Na-Na played at Woodstock.

This version if the ole Doo-*** staple is played at 120 mph and could be (rightly so too) called "punk-ish".

Fun Fact - It is widely know that Jim Hendrix closed out the 3 days of Woodstock...but who knew that sha-Na-Na was the last band before Jimi took the stage? You. You know that now. Every free drink you win with that info....cheers!

Today in Theology class we will listen to this beautiful gospel hymn. My grandfather, Paw Paw, loved this song. He was a Sunday school teacher, and he would be the first to tell you that you don't have to be a "believer" to enjoy gospel music. My grandmother sang in the Joy Club, and my mother used to play the piano in their church when she was younger. Mom always says the best part about church is the music.

15.xx - How Great Thou Art - Martina McBride

One credit of Physical Education.

The Greatest - Kenny Rogers

Little boy in a baseball hat stands in the field with his ball and batSays, "I am the greatest player of them all"Puts his bat in his shoulder and he tosses up his ball. And the ball goes up and the ball comes down,Swings his bat all the way aroundThe world so still you can hear the sound, the baseball falls to the ground. Now the little boy doesn't say a word, picks up his ball he is undeterred.Says, "I am the greatest that there has ever been"And he grits his teeth and he tries again. And the ball goes up and the ball comes down,Swings his bat all the way aroundThe world so still you can hear the sound, the baseball falls to the ground. He makes no excuses he shows no fearHe just closes his eyes and listens to the cheers.Little boy he adjusts his hat, picks up his ball, stares at his batSays "I am the greatest when the game is on the line"And he gives his all one last time. And the ball goes up and the moon so brightSwings his bat with all his mightThe world's as still as still can be, the baseball fallsAnd that's strike three. Now it's suppertime and his momma calls,Little boy starts home with his bat and ball.Says, "I am the greatest, that is a fact,But even I didn't know I could pitch like that!"Says, "I am the greatest, that is understood,But even I didn't know I could pitch that good!"

Round 15

Yo Mama University

Course:  Botany 201

Course Title:  In Bloom

Instructor:  Nirvana

Course Description:  Spring is in the air!  This course focuses on the important part of a plant's life cycle where fertilization and reproduction occur.  Stigma, stamen, calyx?  Don't know what it means?  You will after this colorful course.

Instructor Commentary:  "Spring is here again, reproductive glands.  We can have some more, Nature is a whore.  Bruises on the fruit, tender age in bloom."

Round 16

Yo Mama University

Course:  World History 520

Course Title:  Kashmir

Instructor:  Led Zeppelin

Course Description:  Discover the rich history of the land caught between both time and space, not to mention between China, India, and Pakistan.  This often disputed land has been an important center for Budhism and Hinduism, Muslims and Sikhs.

Instructor Commentary:  "My Shangri-La beneath the summer moon, I will return again.  Sure as the dust that floats high in June, when movin' through Kashmir."

Hank Williams wrote that. Every time I have seen Willie Nelson live he has ended his show with that song.
Wow. Hank wrote that? Just loved him when nobody else did at my little liberal arts school. They would make fun of you for liking Hank (not Jr.) How dumb.
