MixTape Draft - Back to School edition. Make your picks and post your mix! (1 Viewer)

I know this won't be a popular opinion here but 808s is a masterpiece that completely changed music.
I don't think many people here will quibble with Kanye changing music, but how does 808s do it?

Not interrogating, just asking.

And by that time, I'd stopped listening, really. I moved on to other artists. So I'm curious how. Because Kanye did change music in a fundamental way, tabloid stuff aside.

I hate Kanye the person and think he isn't a great rapper. However he is a genius. Listen to 808s and then listen to every Drake, Cudi, Weeknd, Frank Ocean album. Kanye called 808s the first black new wave album which just nails it. Someone else called it the modern day version of Dylan going electric.

Interesting. I don't listen to anyone you listed but Drake, so that's something I can't really comment upon. I'll take you at your word, though. if it was that good, and people were that influenced by it, then it was.  808s is really the dividing line with Kanye for me. I can't get into anything after it.

Hard to listen to any current hip hop without hearing the influence. Everybody is doing these new wave synth beats, sing-rapping, using voice effects and rapping about introspective stuff.

Oh yeah, I get that but didn't know that it was the dividing line of 808s. I thought it was a natural emo and synth progression. But that's cool if Yeezy did it. I don't listen to much current hip hop other than underground stuff, actually. And El-P and others were doing new wave and synth way before Kanye. I remember Astralwerks putting out a hip hop album back in the aughts, way before Kanye, that was totally electronic and sonic.

But 808s changed pop culture, so I accept that.

I think I owe two today...will make it kind of easy here with two songs that continue my summer vacation part of the theme and that I will attempt back-to-back at karaoke one day.

Round 17 - DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince - Summertime

Round 18 - Kenny Chesney - Summertime

Not a fan of doubling up on an artist in a mix though.

round 15   rockpile- teacher,teacher

https://open.spotify.com/track/4MndAZVT7FqXDKCk0HBNIS

Young love, teacher's pet
Cheeks flushed, apple red
Ringing you every day
Begging for a word of praise
I've put aside my foolish games
I run and hide and call names
School's out, the bells'll ring
Now's the time to teach me everything

Teacher, teacher, teach me love
I can't learn it fast enough
Teacher, teacher, teach me more
I've got to learn to love for sure

Lesson one, just begun
Growing up, ain't much fun
Grown up, out of school
Out of luck and out of rules
No one there to tell me how
A different world - teacher, teacher, teach me now

Teacher, teacher, teach me love
I can't learn it fast enough
Teacher, teacher, teach me more
I've got to learn to love for sure

Lesson two nothing new
I can't love, just passing through
The books I read don't understand
What it means to be a man
I need a woman just like you
Teacher, teacher, teach me what to do

Teacher, teacher, teach me love
I can't learn it fast enough
Teacher, teacher, teach me more
I've got to learn to love for sure

Teacher, teacher, teach me love
I can't learn it fast enough
Teacher, teacher, teach me more
I've got to learn to love for sure

Teacher, teacher, teach me love
I can't learn it fast enough

I'm going to do something weird and pick another Kanye song, despite the fact I hate even taking artists in the draft that have been picked.
I have Willie singing with Patsy, him singing an uplifting song, and he just might be showing up one more time on my mix.

Sorry I haven't been on as much during my own draft.  Distracted myself too much with some other silly ####.  I have been enjoying the picks and the creativity of the themes and mixes.  Can't wait to start digging into the mixes tomorrow and I will comment on them as I go again.  Thanks all for playing along with this odd idea I had.

Have 0 clue how I forgot about this one at the start of the draft, but was digging more though my crap, came across this, and this fits too perfectly. It mentions about a dozen elements, but the one that I will use it for makes if fit perfectly in the mix I had anyway, so I will just take out one of the songs (I couldn't get a for sure set of lyrics for that one anyway..).

18.xx:  BLACKALICIOUS - CHEMICAL CALISTHENICS

LINK

Neutron, proton, mass effect, lyrical oxidation, yo irrelevant
Mass spectrograph, your electron volt, atomic energy erupting
As I get all open on betacron, gamma rays thermo cracking
Cyclotron and any and every mic
You're on trans iridium, if you're always uranium
Molecules, spontaneous combustion, pow

Law of de-fi-nite pro-por-tion, gain-ing weight
I'm every element of brown

Lead, gold, tin, iron, platinum, zinc, when I rap you think
Iodine nitrate activate
Red geranium, the only difference is I transmit sound
Balance was unbalanced then you add a little talent and

Careful, careful with those ingredients
They could explode and blow up if you drop then
And they hit the ground

Let it flow, yo, just let it go, get back

C-O-H-O-2 wine water solution of calcium hydroxide
Slobbin it, C-A-O lime will make bleach powder
Galvanic metal beats stomp out louder
Dried ice, C-0 squared refrigerant
N-O-2 makes you laugh, it's laughing gas used by the dentists
I nearly added acid glue, I'm like oil of a toil, the king of chemicals
And the G heat gas waved all your mats
Chemical change, ice point, melt all your raps
Atomic weight, hold shocks, when you call
Refillable gas keep going way beyond
Biotch I'm only ill with buzzin, feel the ambiance
A diabetic process outta calm your ###
After I warm your ###, I'll give sodium, silicate N-O-2-S-1-O-3, a water glass
Borax flexure full of brimstone sulfur
Boraxic acid, hip-hop preserver
C-O-2 could never put away the fire
Style aroma is scientific; the lyrical fuse would be connected
To teach you chemical calisthenics

The Theory is that all matter is composed of at least three fundamental particles
Protons, electrons, neutrons, Protons charge is positive
By now you've guessed electrons are probably negatively charged
Neutrons don't follow either, neutral, in the middle, only no apologies
Centered, unmoved by yin and yang ideology
Neutron, bomb songs, electron fury
Cosmic musical radio-activity
Different points in joints within infinity
Oxygen and hydrogen alive within all types of energy
Within all types of energy
Within all types of energy
Within all types of energy
Within all types of energy, inside a world, inside a world
Inside a universe, inside of me existing although I can't see it

Hydrocarbon, nitrogen cycle, ionization
Heavier than electric motor metals that weigh over a ton
This has been a chemist, Blackalicious creation
Clean out your desk, put your papers away cause class in almost done

This is chemistry plus calisthenics
I'm calcium plus potassium, magnesium, newspaper of sodium, sulfate
Your solvent, chloroform, remedy from the norm
glycerin, purest form Titanium
there is no way out, when this newfy is out
of all arms vibration, forming in a #####
some bleachin' to teach ya religious is equal to pieces of meteor
Eager to be here or is it, can see here I know all of all
I'ma pickin' up pretty little Cindy
I'm more, I'm thinkin of more,
I'm cookin a potion

Very very very few songs aren't on Spotify. Also, you should get on Spotify. It's free. If somone likes music enough to participate in something this nerdy, then they probably would love Spotify.

I'm old school music nerdy...I use Pandora,

So, as this dad tries to figure out how to make a spotify playlist...please be patient.

Dude, I can barely use Spotify either. And I know I have songs here not on it. It is what it is -- don't stress yourself too much. But yeah, I'd like to hear your mix if you get it together. It's probably, um, dope.

I'm far from stressed, my brotha. :D

Luckily my job has been slow lately and my boss is out so I have ALLLLLL afternoon to figure it out. It cant be rocket science.

Gotcha. :)

It's not rocket science. It's just singing up and searching and linking back to the forum. A little tricky, but if my ### can do it sometimes (and I think I won't on this one, or I'll get it in late - - sorry, teach) you probably can, as I'm almost completely incompetent at stuff like this.

I'm still cracking up about that Chapelle Kanye story..

.I have a dope life and I do dope $h!+.

:yup:
Yep. Thanks for checking the link. Always nice to hear people checking out what you value.

For me, the story about The Roots in Portland, Maine, was funny too.
