MOP's rants about everything! (1 Viewer)

Might sound gross, but we add dill pickle slices to our grilled cheese sammiches.

Usually have a pickle on the side, so it's basically the same thing.

Mixing in a pickle is a natural occurrence. :pickle:
Is there any sandwich which a pickle does not compliment nicely? Well, besides peanut butter and jelly,
I don't like pickles in tuna fish.

Seems like this job was acquired really quickly....
I was floored that they let me take over the classes so quick GPJ, still have not done the fingerprints and pee pee test. I am waiting to filter thru the system, sort of a holding pattern. I am supposed to punch in at 8:15 everyday…I haven't punched in yet, don't even have a number yet. It is rather eye opening that you can do this with a basic 4 year degree. It is UM though so I shouldn't be that surprised ;)

I interviewed with the Principal, that was my 3rd round of interview with them inside a week. That was last Wed/Thurs, came in Fri to fill out paperwork and shadow for all of 2 hours, then Tuesday it was go time.

I had some Pho the other day that was delicious, I'm not a huge Asian cuisine person but I do like Vietnamese a lot. There is a hot Vietnamese chick at work also, that seems to make the food taste better.
I like Thai way better. Had the Tom Yum Khai last night with chix and mushroom, delicious. Then I had the chix stir fry with basil sauce and 2 Beerlao to wash it all down, heaven.

Were you not working already?

Day 3: Same schedule I had on Day 1. I start with the intensive math lab which is basically math kids who don't get it BUT the class seems unorganized plus the math teacher who has the 7th grade and 9th grade math feels threatened by me. I line the kids up outside on my side of the room. That's part of the problem, I have the left side with the 7th graders, he has the right side with the 8th graders. No dividers.

His kids just walk in and sit down, mine line up outside until I feel comfortable bringing them in. I had a teacher watch me do this from afar and looked shocked after I started leading them into class. She said to me, does that really work. I responded I haven't had to issue any detentions yet, shrugged my shoulders and kept going.

The other teacher in the classroom undermined me when I sent 1 kid out for a timeout. I guess he doesn't like my system although he did tell his 8th grade math class to look over at my side and how well my kids were behaving and asking them why they can't do the same. He's been teaching for 12 years, I'm at about 12 hours so I can't say anything but I can tell he is the passive aggressive kind which I FRACKIN HATE!!! He took the kid I sent out and had her sit on his side of the room. The student and I talked at the end of class, she said she almost cried because she doesn't want to disappoint me  I just told her I wasn't mad, just wanted her to gather herself for a minute. She is my hugger and she wanted to hug so we did, I gave her a lollipop/candy and she was a happy girl.

US History was my 2nd class, just awesome. We covered a lot of material and the kids were great. They asked if I would continue to be so animated in class telling the stories, a couple of them even said they never learned so much and that history was now their favorite class. :towelwave:

Last class was English Lit where I primarily shadow and can get some of my work done. Asst Principal already told me that several kids have told her I am a massive improvement over whatever was in there previously. My classes are structured and are geared to alleviate most of the homework. My deal with the kids, give me 1 hour and 50 minutes of un-interruptions and hard work, I'll make sure we don't have a lot of homework and can go home and enjoy ourselves.

So far So good. I'm big on manners, I encourage them to act like ladies and gentlemen. I probably mention the word "respect" a bunch in my class. They are understanding what it means to give respect and be treated with respect. I'm hard on them but I'm very fair.

The kids are not the issue, I'm just trying to fit in with the other teachers and also make sure the Principal hears all the good things we are doing so I can get a contract for next year and enjoy my summer off.

Cheers everyone :banned:

Skimmed through and this stood out:

"she wanted to hug so we did, I gave her a lollipop/candy and she was a happy girl."

That doesn't right.

I think it's worth mentioning to the other teacher that changing your discipline in front of the kids is undermining you and disrupting discipline, and that given the reputation your kids have according to your hire, discipline is more important than anything else.

The fact that he's been around longer doesn't mean you can't talk to him, just do it when the kids aren't around. As he should be doing with you.

Good point HF, I did try and talk to him at lunch, he said that we had visitors and that kids shouldn't be out in the halls. I said, Thanks, you were actually looking out for me, I appreciate it. Of course I didn't mean any of it but I am giving him respect.

Same teacher had a desk clerk from the front office come into my late class around 2:15 and ask if I could cover his after school math tutoring as he was starting to feel sick and needed to split at 3:15. Now of course I said yes and made sure everyone saw me leaving at 4:30 today but it just backs up he is a passive aggressive person. He couldn't even ask me directly, had to go thru an office clerk. You can be sure if I needed that done I would ask personally, not thru another employee. But he did trust me enough to run his tutoring. I'm gonna play it soft for now, he has been there a long time but this is the same teacher who berated a kid in front of me on the 1st day. Now I almost made a kid cry without even raising my voice, because she was so worried I was going to be disappointed, not because I was gonna yell at her. I think these kids want to be yelled at, so much easier to brush the teacher off when they are yelling and screaming.

I do think being a man and standing 6-2, it helps. I also am not naive, these kids got hit over the head with my rules and consequences like it was never explained before so I would guess for the moment they are on their best behavior but eventually some will try and revert back to their bad habits.

Target has soup now? Good to know.
Its prepackaged Panera soup. It's in the refrigerated section.
I could go for a good soup now. What flavors did they have? You know who else likes soup? SWC. Man I miss that guy!
Broccoli cheddar, chicken noodle, lobster bisque, potato, tomato, New England clam chowder and macaroni and cheese
Yeah I am a big soup eater, they had nothing in Texas but Chili which isn't a soup. My favorite is the Polish Chicken Noodle with the Kluski Noodles and it has to be homemade. When I go to my cabin, even in the middle of summer, I have to go to this diner that has the best of this soup. I just order soup and tell the waitress to keep them coming until I say stop. They know me know, I'm the Kluski Noodle black guy. Some good crab bisque here in Maryland, I like potato soup also. Never liked the chowders much, tomato is an under-appreciated classic.
Are Kluski noodles thicker like egg noodles? That's the kind of noodle I want in my chicken noodle soup.

Is this the "spice" you're talking about?

My wife (2nd grade teacher) had a peach of a day today.

Had a student throw a rock during recess which inadvertantly struck another student in the forehead. Blood gushing everywhere, both kids screaming and crying. The rest of the class was either hyped up by all the commotion or freaked out by all the blood.

Had a kid go to the nurse for dehydration.

Had a kid threaten to bring a gun to school and kill another kid.

Kid with gash in head required 17 stitches.

Kid who threw the rock was terrified he would be "put in jail."

Girl in class had a panic attack over the blood because it reminded her of "what happened to the girls."

Kid with dehydration got some fluids and was OK.

Kid who was threatened apparently has been getting cussed out (called MFer, etc) and threatened regularly by bully. Kid's Mom emailed my wife and told her everything her son was saying and wanted to meet w/ principal and my wife in AM to see what they are going to do.

Kid who did the threatening is a mess and is the first kid in 8 yrs of teaching that my wife wants out of her room.

Wife was crying a lot tonight.

Good luck, Mop...this teaching thing is a breeze.

Frack this co-teacher in my homeroom and Math/Eng Lit, we share 45+ students and 1 day I am teaching math for 2 hours, the next she is running Eng Lit for 2 hours.

-She is a walking PMS bag today. She has an 18 month old, father is about done with nursing school, he wants her to give him another baby but doesn't want to put the ring on her finger. She is not the prettiest tool in the shed.

-She doesn't make the kids do the Pledge of Allegiance nor does she hang an American flag nor does she like this country…then this PMS bag of blood decides to say right before I start math today with the class, she decides to tell everyone she has earned the right to never have to do math again and then she has the CAJONES to say isn't that right MR MOP?!

-I spit you not, I just stood there with :jawdrop: and decided to jump right into the Rule of 72 and worked it out on the board with 3%, 6%, 12% rates of return over a 40-50 year period and then told the kids that they will never escape math. I did ask the teacher later if she ever used math trying to figure out the distance she travels to work, time she might want to hit the clock when she comes in, count up her paycheck. She was not amused and in fact I could tell quickly the little light or bell in her head that rattles around was starting to click and she now knows that she shouldn't even be teaching in the same room with me. She has no control of the kids and it's night and day between the 2 classes. I'm worried she is going to undermine me or work behind my back trying to bad mouth me to the other 7th, 8th, 9th grade teachers…there's about 5-6 of us.

-PMS BoB almost had a nervous breakdown in the class and for whatever reason decided to take out her frustrations on a notoriously angry kid who can be taught with some love and care but when he loses it and goes MOP on teachers he gets in mucho trouble. He wasn't doing anything wrong in my class and she started yelling at him and made him go into the hall. I tried to stop it and she gave me that BACK OFF look and I just kept teaching the rest my kids. He went out in the hall, he kicked the walls, he all but punched her apparently. She was busy filling out silly paperwork the rest of the time in my class. I really think it could have been prevented. She said "You don't know the history" and I said "No, but I sure have learned what a grudge is and so has the student."

-We had visitors today and they didn't even walk in my class, I was one of only a handful that was actually on my feet and actively teaching. One woman wanted to hold the little group up to hear the end of whatever part of my lecture was covering.

-I get down to the last class today. Most days I have 3 separate 1 hr and 50 minute classes, today I had 6 different 50 minute classes. So the last of the day we have buses that leave 25 minutes before the rest of the school. Or at least they must go to the buses 25 minutes before the rest of the kids who walk or are picked up can leave. So this one kid tried to leave and told me he takes the bus.

-After he left my room, his next door neighbor where he lives told me he doesn't ride a bus. I raced outside and caught him as he was almost off school property and he started walking back and I confronted him. "Where's your bus?" he started telling me how he lied to me and I felt betrayed. I walked him back, told him I can now no longer trust him, and also trust is something that is hard to regain after you lose it. his mother is a school teacher(He's so dead) and I left a message with her from my classroom to please call me. He was my 1st detention ever. And I told him I won't let him serve it until I meet with his mother.

MOP, be careful and stay tight on those rules. There is almost always a honeymoon period with a new class. Thing can flip quick. You have your rules, your procedures, don't break from them.

I can't believe that this is happening.
Me either but I feel like I'm in my 20s again. And since I turn 40 in April it's a fantastic feeling. I've only got a week left this month, Mar/Apr(FCAT)/May, summer, it will go by fast. I need to show them I'm the right person so I can get a contract for next year.

My 8th grade math bombed my quiz on Friday, it was only my 2nd class with them and I wanted to see where they are at. It's not good. I gotta come up with a game plan this weekend,

Hopefully a quiz that doesn't count, since you hadn't really taught them anything yet?

Is this the math lab class for kids that are bad at math? Which grade is it again? What standards are you looking to teach them over the next couple months? Also, do you know about formative vs summative assessments and how to use them?

OK, but these kids are crying about the last teacher but they were already taught Chapter 5(example), I told them to grab their books and what to study at home for my "pop quiz"

Half the class laughed that warning off and did not take their books home to study. It was a simple quiz, 10 of the 15 questions were just definition type things like supplementary angles, right angles, etc…

Of course I am going to not weigh it much but about 1/2 the class did pretty well. I have to give them 2 grades a week according to county rules.

7th grade, many of them are not that dumb. I have just a couple that are really slow, struggle with stuff like 14-5 in their heads.

Does that mean you aren't sure about other questions? You should figure out what they should know by the end of the school year and work backwards. Make a "final", work back from there and lay out a calendar of when you want to be where. I believe you said classes are pretty long, so I would be quizzing them daily at the end of class. Tests end of every week or every other week.

Can you do us a favor, and give your 7th and 8th grade math class you famous pizza problem and see how many of the slow ones get it correct?

I am going to bring in pizza to show different angles.
