Most Depressing Movies (2 Viewers)

shocked nobody has put up Se7en especially since it was higlighted in another thread.
Eh, that was probably more shocking. I get that the overall film was shot in a depressing fashion (it never seemed to be sunny, some of the deaths were depressing) but I don't view Se7en on the same plane of depression like I would many already listed in this thread.
yeah. not one I'd include here, even if there are components like you say. the main story is a thriller- the only depression is the box, not the whole movie. and besides- like Contagion, c'mon admit it- you were a bit happy to see it happen.

Requiem for a Dream

This was the first movie that instantly came to mind but if you're looking for depression you're sure to find many in his filmography i.e. The Wrestler, The Whale, etc
Same, re Requiem.

Killing Fields
Leaving Las Vegas

Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Sophie's Choice

Lars Von Trier makes some gut punching (breaking the ways, dancer in the dark) depressing movies, but they always strike me as too manipulative for me to allow myself to get emotionally involved...im usually frustrated more than depressed.
Only saw the first two......brutal. Sophies Choice was a solid film....I don't remember it depressing me though.....now Hannah and Her Sisters....that's another story...LOL.

Not a movie but Adolescence on Netflix is 4 hours of sad, heartbreaking and anxiety inducing “entertainment”, especially if you’re a parent of a teen or preteen.

Legends of the Fall

In retrospect, not a great movie. Great James Horner score though. And didn't Julia Ormond have a nice 15 minutes of fame?

Couple of us mentioned Pajamas.

I get the mention, but I found Life is Beautiful annoying... I know I'm in the minority on that. A particular type of Italian film making that goes too far into schmaltz for my liking. But definitely fits the thread.
I thought about Life Is Beautiful and I agree with your opinion. I just didn't really enjoy the movie.

Pan's Labyrinth was pretty depressing in the glossing up a wartime situation sense like Life is Beautiful.

Didn't see Trainspotting, or Gummo listed. Pretty depressing
Gummo is just weird. Which is odd for me to say because I liked Kids (even though I nominated it up thread). But Gummo doesn't hit home for me and IIRC it's just a mash up of scenes whereas Kids had some semblance of a plot. The kid eating spaghetti in the tub still freaks me out.

Von Trier is a great choice. Just when you think things can't get worse he manages to dig the hole even deeper - very Danish of him. I forget the name of the Nicole Kidman film he did with her that took place on a stage but that was gut wrenching. It's not for everyone but what a tremendous movie if you dont have ADHD and can sit through the first hour.

I kinda feel the same about Eraserhead, though it was so bizarre I’m not sure how well I understood it.

Yea, it's probly more disturbing, than depressing. The best part was it had Sleeps' song Dragonaut in it.

i love this movie and will not hear anyone speak ill of it i say good day to you sir take that to the bank brohans

Requiem for a Dream and Less Than Zero were the first two that came to mind.

Watership Down, although it pales in comparison to the book, was up there when I was young.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest hit pretty hard when I was younger as well.
