Muslims in NYC Planning to Build Second Mosque Near Ground Zero (1 Viewer)

your average, run of the mill white liberal who wants nothing more than to believe we all can hold hands and sing songs together once the Jews and american conservatives are extinct.
When I think of the various people that want Jews to be extinct, your average, run of the mill white liberal is not exactly at the top of the list. HTH

Not Jews per se, but many liberals do seem to want to get rid of Israel.

The difference between those two statements is mine is supportable while yours is utterly ridiculous. Liberal support of Israel is fading fast.
These numbers show two things. First, since Obama entered office there has been a 13-point decline in the number of congressmen willing to support Israel. Second, the decrease comes entirely from the Democratic side of the aisle. There the number of members willing to attack Israel has tripled.
In February 2010, Fifty-four congressmen sent a letter to Obama urging him to pressure Israel to open Hamas-ruled Gaza’s international borders and accusing Israel of engaging in collective punishment. All of them were Democrats.

...Similarly, since November, Rep. Louie Gohmert has been working on a resolution supporting Israel’s right to attack Iran’s nuclear installations. Gohmert’s resolution condemns Iran’s threat to commit nuclear genocide against Israel and expresses “support for Israel’s right to use all means necessary to confront and eliminate nuclear threats posed by Iran, defend Israeli sovereignty, and protect the lives and safety of the Israeli people, including the use of military force if no other peaceful solution can be found within a reasonable time.”

To date, Gohmert has racked up more than 40 co-sponsors. All are Republican.
Recent opinion polls show that the Republican-Democrat divide on Israel in Congress reflects a growing partisan gap among the general public. A Gallup poll conducted in February showed that whereas 85 percent of Republicans support Israel (up from 77% in February 2009), and 60% of Independents support Israel (up from 49% in February 2009), only 48% of Democrats support Israel, (down from 52% in February 2009).

I think it's in poor taste, but if they legally own the land and are within all building codes, they should be allowed to build the mosque there. And someone that wants to build a gay nightclub right across the street that caters to Muslims should be just as allowable. You know, in order to help build understanding and bridges and such.

At least open a pulled pork BBQ place upwind of the mosque.

A pork shop might bring in more drama.

The gay nightclub could specialize in pork. Makes sense anyway, right? Footlong Italian Sausage sandwiches with onions and peppers as the featured menu item.

You do realize getting rid of Israel and making Jews extinct are two entirely different things?

I thought that was clear from the sentence.

Really? Many liberals? I challenge you to name one. One liberal who wants to "get rid of Israel." TIA.
Helen Thomas for certain. Jimmy Carter maybe.
I would call Helen Thomas a radical leftist, not a liberal. One of the problems with your comments, IMO, is that you can't see the distinction between the two. As for Carter, he has many mixed up views about Israel that I strongly disagree with. But he has never called for the destruction of Israel.

I did not mean the destruction of Israel. But I would bet there are lots of liberals who wished we never re-established Jewish state. Liberals are by far the least supportive of Israel of any group. They tend to view anything that Israel do to defend themselves in negative light and tend to excuse terrorists acts by Palestinians. It would be interesting to do a poll to see what percentage of people would like to give Israel to the Palestinians. It probably would not be real large, but i believe those that do would be overwhelmingly liberal.

It's true that lately (in the last decade or so) liberals have tended to be less friendly to Israel than conservatives. There are several reasons for this, including some religious ones, but the main reason is that Israel somehow changed perception in American eyes from the underdog nation it was to start out with to representing the establishment. When the Jews were fighting against the British Empire in the late 40s, Israel's cause was a liberal one, and generally opposed by conservatives in thie country, and this continued until around the time that Menachem Begin became its prime minister in the late 70s- that's when the change started to happen. As far as anti-Semitism goes in general, what little of it that has existed in the United States, with the exception of some radical African-Americans, has been primarily a right-wing phenomenon.

The great irony is, between the Halal carts, the NYPD t-shirt stands, and other assorted street business in the Ground Zero vicinity, there are Muslims already integrated into the local neighborhood. And its not nor never has been an issue.

NY is a very small place, I find this distinction of proximity to be slightly dubious, its not that close.

So I'm on vacation with the family and asked my sister, who lives in lower Manhattan, what people around there think about it. Needless to say, the vast majority of residents and workers have very different opinions than peens and jon_mx.

But then again, New Yorkers aren't "real Americans" anyway.

You're informal little poll would seem to contradict all of the actual professionally done polls so far. All of which should that over 50% of NYC residents oppose the mosque.

Shouldn't matter if 100% of them oppose it.
