My countdown list of one hit wonders- 1. Play That Funky Music (Wild Cherry) (2 Viewers)

18. “I’d Love to Change the World”- Ten Years After (1971)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eOCtHjQKySw

I ding this a little bit for homophobia (maybe?) . But otherwise it’s just an awesome rock song. Starts out with great acoustic guitar and then a soaring electric, and superb drumming.

This is Alvin Lee’s supreme moment. He was never able to repeat it. But during the time that this song is being played, Ten Years After reaches the pinnacle of British blues rock, matching the best of Led Zeppelin, the Stones, and all the rest...for a few minutes anyhow.
I would suggest that this is TYA's pinnacle performance:  I'm Going Home

50,000 Mile Beneath my Brain is my favorite.  ETA: This lead guitar is soo smooth.

Well I’m surprised. But not shocked. If classic rock wasn’t in your wheelhouse  growing up then it’s possible you’ve never heard it. Despite its hit status it was a little too hard for the soft rock that everybody somehow absorbs by osmosis.

How do you like it?
I have to re-listen.  Listened once and then got distracted by Bill Callahan's Tiny Desk Concert, which happens to me about three times a week.

Yeah, this is very good.  Obviously the guitar is great but I'm even more enamored of the vocal.  Still stumped that it's apparently so well known and I'd never heard it before.  Let's see what else you got!

Tim loses me on occasion in this thread but My Sharona and I'd Love to Change the World are fantastic songs.

I swear- if you pick "The Macarena" or "Mickey", I'm going to come right on over and hurt you.
Mickey came in at 87.

As for Macarena that is by far the best selling record that is considered a OHW, and one of the best selling records of all time. So no disrespect  to its creators: they’re very wealthy and I am not. Still, sadly, I had to pass.

17. “Come On Eileen”- Dexy’s Midnight Runners (1982)

Most rankings that Ive seen of OHW have this song coming in at either #1 or #2 by the critics, and almost always #1 when there’s a vote involved. So I think it’s pretty much a consensus. I have at at 17, but that’s not meant to disparage it: this is a great song. Love the use of fiddles and “too la roo”, the whole Irish thing works great. Plus it rocks. It’s just that there are 16 other songs I love just a little more.

Top top top for me --- the overalls are sooooo tight - its makes me squirm.

Up next: before these guys wrote and performed this huge hit from 1976, they helped John Denver compose “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”

That Dexy's Midnight Runners video must have played every 10 songs in the early MTV days ...when I think of MTV - I think of mr. overalls/bad hair on the street corner doing the hoedown.

The girl in the video is Máire Fahey whose sister was in Bananarama

This was one of the songs I alluded to earlier with my "English band that likes to jog late at night" reference.  :bag:

21. “My Sharona”- The Knack (1979)

Let’s get this out of the way first- yes “Good Girls Don’t” hit #11. And given the music nerds in here some of you guys no doubt remember it. I don’t and most of the world doesn’t. But everybody remembers “My Sharona”. In fact I would argue that, although this is not a one hit wonder under stringent rules, for a lot of people it could be the one hit wonder.

This is a great classic rock song. I love the opening bass line, and I absolutely love the guitar solo towards the end of the song- one of my favorite solos in all of rock music.
Not a music nerd, but I could recite most of the lyrics to Good Girls Don't.  That got a ton of air time.

It's also the instrumental for RUN-DMC's "It's Tricky"
