My favorite 100 Rap Songs: #97: "Runnin'" by The Pharcyde (1 Viewer)

IMAX 3D

Footballguy
We're in quarantine - let's just do this. I keep a running rolodex of albums, songs, rap songs, r and be songs, rock songs. Etc.

I'm going to masturbate in here like others are with rap music. One of the biggest influences on my musical life.

For this one

#100: LL Cool J - I Shot Ya (Remix) each person on the song gave their best verse of all time - including Keith Murray.

This was Foxy Brown's debut on any album. This was known as an MC Hammer diss at the time and if you look into the history of MC Hammer, word is he had most of the bloods in California behind him and would retaliate when he was joked on in song. Tupac actually thought this diss was aimed at him and it took years to squash that beef. LL also had a famous beef with Kool Moe Dee but this song was not directed at him either. Prodigy had the weakest verse but RIP Prodigy

Fantastic gym record: I Shot Ya

Best line: "What the ####? I thought I conquered the world
Crushed Moe Dee , Hammer, and Ice-T's girls"

Fair warning now - I lean more toward radio popular rap. I listen to all of it, but I don't think I'm a mark for liking the hits. This is gonna piss someone off but you won't see a Vinny Paz or Atmosphere song on this list (I am supremely down with Jay Electronica tho)

I will also include new rap if it's worthy. Sorry, I know it all sucks, but there are some diamonds in the rough

2 a day.

This song got forgotten but has one of the best best bassy synths in the history. That hook is so good.

I dont know a lot of the backstory here with Domino but I know he was a crip and a lot of his lyrics were quoted later in Snoop and Dre songs. "Ghetto Jam" was his breakthrough song but didn't hokd up.

Epic hook

99. Domino - Sweet Potato Pie

Best line "The fellas want to have a barbeque tonight, I think it's on about five,
They say it's gonna have plenty daisy dukes, and Les says it's gonna be live,"

Judging from the first two choices and spelling of LL's name, I'm going to assume you're not the ideal candidate to handle this list  ;)

Just sit back and relax my friend, I fixed it this AM.

I can't really say a lot here. It's a great beat, one of the best beats in the early 2kS

An anthem for a lot of major league stadiums who play in stadiums.

98. Fabulous - Breathe

A Just Blaze production, a song fit for the iPod while at the gym

97. The Phracyde - Runnin'

I put the apostrophe on the end of Runnin' to make sure @Major wasn't triggered.

The best song on the best rap album to smoke to in my high school days. Some nostalgia here. Well worth, we'll get to Luniz later of course, but this one is in the top.

Well this is over like a fart in church. I figured Major would be the biggest participant, maybe rock second. I'm gonna pull the plug. Just gonna cause me stress to please the people. Feels Bad Man. For the record, They Reminisce Over You was my #1

I'm not. I did a top 500 here (under a different name) and uploaded them in downloadable mp3 files 100 a time for people who followed, about 10 years ago. :kicksrock: Spotify and grammar police have derailed the fun for me I guess. 🤷‍♂️ Take my ball and go home time.

IMAX 3D, we're just laughing. Typos happen. Major's sarcasm happens. I'm totally on board with this countdown. I was on board with Acer FC's hardcore countdown, and I'm down with this one. I'm planning on doing a punk hundred myself so I guess I should have thought more about what our responses meant to someone on the other end.

I sincerely apologize if it made you feel unworthy or bad. Peace, man. Keep going! What's 96?

I know you were just laughing (and you should!). Was hoping for more participation, honestly I'm not offended by anything, but we aren't getting a lot of steam. I did this with 500 songs years ago like I said, and I think demographically FBGs is not the place to be honest. I'll sleep on it because I do try to put in a lot of thought in the write ups. I am prone to typos. J vs Jay is a little nitpicking but also being told I'm not the person for this job was actually a little crappy. Will sleep on it. thanks for the kinds words friendo!

ETA: I also feel bad I filtered out my underground hip hop spreadsheet for this. I wanted to keep it a little more mainstream to "Mass Appeal" to a bigger audience,.e.g. Immortal Technique has a spot in my favorite songs but it's just not something that most non hip hop heads have ever heard

Also remind me when I get over being butthurt and I post 96. "Hustlers Ambition" by 50 I post the non-edited version because the regular video is horrid (but let's be honest, I'll get buried for posting a 50 song)

Not by me you won't. Before 50 started in on Vitamin Water and making as much money as he could, he had game. You keep on with the countdown and don't worry about the peanut gallery. By the way, the hip hop heads will come out and some already poked their noses in here. Their opinion might differ at times, but that's to be expected in the soup.

You gotta give it more time. People wanna see where youre going with it.

I haven't honestly sat down to figure out my top 100 but so far you might be 1 for 4 for me with Pharcyde's Runnin being the only song with a punchers chance.

  you asked.

Lets keep this thing going.

Yikes.  You should know that gentle ribbing will come with any subjective Top 100 list (especially in hip hop).  Being scared to death and scared to look is no way to navigate life.

If you're trying to accommodate FBGs by posting a watered down list that won't work either.  Post what you think are the best 100 songs.  I think Dance With The Devil and Leaving The Past have a place on most lists.

In regards to traction in this forum, it's mostly a collective of old white guys who didnt grow up listening to hip hop so participation will be limited to a core group.  I'd say post your list, maybe 10-25 at a time to speed up the process.

Probably best show I've ever been too, and not only because I was higher than a kite.  Pharcyde opens, 311 in the middle, topped off by some Cypress Hill.  Man oh man.

Oh, that was in 1996 or 1997 I believe.

I got turned on to Immortal Technique on this board probably 15 years ago. The lyricism is impressive, but at some point you need a hook.

Also, your post is "my favorite," not the best 100.

Whenever I hear Doin' It by LL, I remember dancing with my freshman girlfriend at a frat party. It's probably my favorite LL song, even though it isn't the best LL Cool J song by a mile.
Never had a friend like me is almost all hook, but it makes me think of one of my best friends as we were both driftless in our early twenties.
What's your favorite is subjective. Own it and F the haters.

Thanks for the cool responses by @Major and @rockaction -2 people I very much respect in hip hop world. I do know it was ribbing but if the usually suspects are involved it makes it funner for me is all.

I will finish the countdown. Sorry for being a witch with a b

Gonna post the entire list in the 2nd post in the thread with links throughout the day today. Then I want to hear from my people @Major @rockaction instead of doing some low key timschoch masturbation countdown. Cool? (dont tell anyone but this is Bender btw, the man who keeps you all up on the new stuff thats good)

Also while I say I'm not going to go with much underground stuff here on this list. You also won't see Drake or Post Malone (even tho White Iverson probly deserves at least a top 1000 spot)

There are more than one?  I’m lost.  🤦🏽‍♂️

why not just setup a draft?
He said he wasn't gonna do one and then said his number 1 was T.R.O.Y.

He got me hype so I started one.

It's all good with me. I tried encouraging him to go through with it earlier so I'm all for seeing his list. Maybe it will help me not forget a song or two.

Has a producer draft been done?  Best beats draft?  I think best beats could be great.
The more specific you get, the more you lose me. I'm drowning in a general hip hop draft, never mind a limited one. But yeah, those sound like a great idea for hip hop heads.

I was thinking beats gives folks without as deep knowledge more choices.  If we do producers i feel like the average person will know what like 20-30ish producers?

I'd agree with you on that. I think I know less than I think I do about this subject, frankly.
