Naked and Afraid on Discovery Channel (1 Viewer)

Knife doubles as a cutting implement for making rope, shelter etc. Also, attach to end of a stick and you have a fishing spear.
Spear fishing is very difficult.
You can just make a tidal trap. Guy did it on the Naked Castaway and it looked pretty simple.

Step 1: Find a tidal pool that fish can swim into. Bait it if possible.

Step 2: Wait for fishes to swim into it.

Step 3: Drop a bunch of rocks into the route into the tidal pool so the fishes can't swim out.

Step 4: Wait for tide to go out.

Step 5: Collect fishes

Knife would be very useful for cleaning the fish though. And chopping coconuts, etc.

The more I think about it, I'm going with a knife or machette. Bonus points if I can bring a Swiss Army knife with a magnifying glass so I can start a fire that way.

See that is a good idea.

Do all islands have tidal pools? I imagine you could build one.

slight hijack/

Hiking through Denali last week, at different times I asked me 9 year old and and 6 year old what 3 things they would bring if we had to make it through a year in the Alaskan wilderness.

9 year old: Pickaxe, Tent, Firestarter.

6 year old: Slingshot, Bucket, Warm jacket

They combined their choices with mine (axe, sleeping bag, rifle). Not sure what I would have done with only 1 choice.

On these islands, I'd probably go with an axe.

Wow I need to start watching this.

The one item I would bring would be a Firestarter or if I knew it was going to be an island some fishing line.
I've been thinking about this. You really need the following:

Priority 1: Source of water

Priority 2: Shelter

Priority 3: Food

So, what I would bring would depend a lot on the actual environment. For example, on that island, I wouldn't have worried about a fire starter so much. Its dry enough that you can probably make one with stuff available, and I would practice at home before going to make sure i had it down. Plus, you can get clean water out of coconuts and there are plenty available. So, I'd be thinking about bringing a fishing pole or some sort of weapon/cutting implement. Both would be pretty darn useful.
I am thinking on the island the fishing line (or a fishing net) would be best. As far as a source of water goes I can not think of a single device would you bring to provide fresh water.

Coconuts might not be plentiful, and i love fish.
A knife would let you cut open containers (like gourds) to store water in though.

I would try to make the show as boring as possible.

I'd bring a pot to boil water in. Then I'd do a 21-day water fast, expending as little energy as possible. I'd just sit around and meditate all day while sipping water.

For me it is knife or fishing net for the island.

The most recent episode finally had a cute looking naked chick to look at. She was the best survivalist on the show so far as well. Glad the army dude ended up appreciating how awesome she was by the end.
Yeah, she was kinda cute and made the dude look like a sissy.

The dude in ep2 had a nice tight firm looking buttocks. :oldunsure:

saw this episode last night.. im a subscriber.. im glad its a new location and couple every episode.. i wouldnt watch it if they used the same couple/location for a whole season like survivor.

and the guy was terrible, he made it look like he was a navy seal or somthing. i definately expected much more out of him

In the africa one, when they started out complaining about how hot the ground was and stepping on all the needles from the trees. Why not take a bunch of the prairie grass and fashion it into a shoe of sorts. Run it along the length of your foot and then up your ankle, and then take some other pieces to wrap over your foot and around your ankle and tie them together. It is not going to be enough to go running around, but would provide some basic protection for the bottom of their feet.

Okay, I've watched all 3 so far. I think I would've faired decent in the plains of Africa and thrived on the island in the Maldives. I don't know about that jungle though. I hate snakes. No chance in hell I would attempt to kill one that poisonous either.
Maybe you just haven't found the right one.

How long would that take, and how reliable and durable would the product be?

Calories and consequently time are scarce. There's not a lot of time for arts and crafts projects.

 A couple minutes each side. They were surrounded by grass, and the guy ended up getting an infected foot that severely limited him the rest of the 21 days. On the show where they were on the island, they had hand woven palm frond hats that they made, and psuedo grass skirts.

I would think the time spent making them would more than be offset by the quicker walking pace they could then keep up since they wouldn't be pulling needles out of their feet all the time.

What if your one item was the world's largest cookie or something like that. Then you'd just need to find water.

Do they get to pick their one item once they know where they are going or once they signed up to be a contestant? Hate to be a guy that says fishing net and he gets stuck in the African episode.

I finally watched this show online over the past weekend and IMHO it is fake.

Notice how white the girl's teeth are at the end of the 21 days. There is no way, also notice that there is a pattern to every show.

One member will get sick/injured and the other will have to the work for both, one will make a bad mistake like drinking bad water, moving the fire beneath the hut, ......

This is as fake as Bear Grylls.

I'm assuming once they know where they're going. Hence that lady bringing a metal pot to Africa. Wouldn't have made as much sense in the other locations really. In a rain forest it rains so much that you can either collect rainfall for fresh water or trust a river since most of that water fell from the sky recently anyways. On an island you figure something will wash up on shore to boil water in.

She had butter teeth to begin with.

Look at the Africa and the island girls - their teeth are bright and shiny.

And in both the Costa Rica and Panama episodes, where they would be navigating through thick brush, one member brought a machete. I think they definitely get a list of suggestions. They probably know where they're going, too. I doubt that Panama girl just happened to know what a water apple was. And I think the guy mentioned doing his research before coming out there.

And that's fine by me. It's still a very tough challenge.

I agree and was thinking when I watched they should have made some sort of foot protection early on.

IIRC, after the trek to the water hole, they basically spent most of the first 3 days trying to make a fire. Seems like there was plenty of time in there for one of them to come up with something for their feet.

the dude from this past episode was such a wussy. I cant believe someone who claims to be a survivalist can barely swim, is afraid of every freaking animal and is fat as Bartolo Colon

That dude was a complete #####. I really have no clue what he was doing on the show. And to top it off, his one item is a pair of ####ing goggles despite the fact he's afraid of the water. I really felt bad for the chick.

this past episode had the best lookn chick so far.. wasnt such a bad episode.. i think she got more attractive as she started losing the weight

He seemed to have some legitimate skills, but man, his fear of bugs and snakes and sharks and pretty much every living thing completely crippled him from making a meaningful contribution. Also, the decision to bring goggles instead of a firestarter was dumb and cost them days of wasted labor. Maybe he was confident in his ability to make a fire, but that confidence cost them, especially when he was too afraid to even use the goggles.
