Studies have shown that you perform better if you give in to a nap if you are feeling it. Even shutting your eyes for awhile and just relaxing refreshes you. There is nothing wrong with people who benefit from it. It doesn't mean they are in ill health. Most are under a lot of stress and just powering through is going to eventually make them unhealthy..
But if your cardiovascular system is efficient, all else being equal (not hungover, etc) wouldn't that lesson the need for naps?  Or are the 2 totally unrelated?

I think it's more related to your brain since you can 'control' keeping awake and such by ingesting things like coffee and nodoze that effects the sleep center in your brain. Exercise of course keeps you healthy and going longer (which is what's implied with the cardiovascular system imo)- but I think it's more your brain just needing the rest. I'm no expert though. Interesting topic.

JD I think you're on to something when looking at our society filled with overweight people that never nap and over caffeinate.

I love the power naps, but since I don't go to my mom's for lunch anymore during the week I don't get to take very many during the week.  Still like them on the weekend though, 30 minutes tops, but usually 15-20 minutes in the recliner and it make a huge difference for the rest of the day.

I try to take a nap when tired but can never fall asleep..just lay there and then can start hearing my heart beat.

From what I have read it seems 20-30 minutes is the perfect siesta time.

I usually take two naps everyday during the work week. To and from my house to downtown for work on the bus. About a 30 minute nap each way.

@NewlyRetired Why do you stay up all hours of the night every day?  I realize you are retired but what are you doing from say midnight to 4am?
Same thing I do most other hours of the day.  Read, watch tv, play video games, learn about cooking online etc.

My body just some how won't fall asleep at a normal hour any more.  My wife and I almost crossed each other last week.  I went to bed at 5:15am and she got up at 5:45am :)

I hate naps, almost always make me feel miserable when I wake up. I do doze off watching TV for 5-10 minutes at a time but that's about the max I can take and not feel off.

I get 6-7 hours consistently every night.

Lots of pro athletes take an early afternoon nap on days the have games that night. Read an article specially about this last week, nearly all of the Celtics do.
