NBA BTTF III - Draft Over! War of attrition underway... (1 Viewer)

Lets get this show on the road. I'm getting excited to take Marc Gasol and Mike Conley with my first two picks.

Any chance I could get a link to the rules for this particular league, or at least some guidance on how to pick guys? I assume I just take guys I think are just good basketball players and try to create a decent real world roster? Anything that's particularly valuable (or not) in this format?

Efficiency is something to consider, you want your most efficient players getting the most usage. Other than that just take best player available.

With the first pick in the 2014 WIS BTTF III draft, defending champion Yo Mama selects/retains:

1.01 - Kevin Durant, OKC SF

Welcome back to the team, Kevin!

Getting enough minutes for the sim is huge too. Just ask Abe.

Yeah, sometimes its a little better to take the John Salmons of the world who inexplicably get 2000 minutes, rather than the low minutes high usage darlings, so you can fill your team with enough minutes. A couple injuries to key players and you're hosed if you don't have yourself a couple crappy minute eating fall backs.

Also, you can sign up for an exhibition team on WIS to see all the player ratings for previous years, which can be very helpful after the first few rounds. Mostly, the sim is just about having enough (but not too much) usage with high efficiency.

Thanks. Will do.

ETA- I tried to sign up for an exhibition team and I don't see any player ratings. I just have the chance to load rosters of various teams from various years. Is there a quick way I can be linked to the 2013-14 rankings?

If not don't worry, I'll just draft and lose badly this year and figure it out for next year. Probably the best way to learn this.

Damn. I thought Davis would drop down further. I was even hoping to get him. But I believe that it's the correct choice- after the first two, there's probably nobody else more desirable right now.

Certainly has the highest ceiling of anybody left, my only concern with Davis is he has had a bit of an injury bug the last two years. Not enough to be scared off, but enough to at least consider somebody else. If he plays 3000 minutes this year, there is little doubt he'll be in the top 3 players in the sim, with a not so small chance of beating out Lebron or Durant.

If I remember right (this might not be the case), we didn't allow any trades in the previous years. I might be thinking of a different draft though...

People really thought Davis would drop below 3? He was the 3rd best player last year and he's 21. I don't think there was even a decision to be made there.

Now 4 is where it starts to get interesting.

No, we've done in draft and post draft trades in the past.
Here is our official ruling on the matter, from the first post:

"24 team snake draft consisting of 18 rounds. No supplemental rounds. No trading of draft picks permitted until the 3rd round has begun. Player-for-player trades are permitted at any time. Exchanging of draft slots may also be done before a drafter's first rounder is made."

I would have taken Davis ahead of anyone not named LeBron. Really bummed that I got bumped from the #2 spot. Not really sure who I'm getting at the 5th spot.

If you build a logical basketball team, and your players perform well in the season, you'll do fine. That said, here's what everything does in the sim:

Usage: Explained at the link above better than I could.

Shooting percentages and turnovers: Are covered under usage.

Minutes: Your players will be allowed to play about the number of minutes they played in real life. If you don't have enough minutes, your players will fatigue, be ineffective, and possibly get injured (there are no random injuries, just fatigue-related ones).

Position Effectiveness: Players who have less than 100% at a position will not perform up to their full capabilities. You'll probably notice that outside of pure point guards and giant oafish centers, most players are 100% at multiple positions, so you have some flexibility.

Assists: Having more of them will positively affect your team's FG%.

Rebounds: Function exactly as you'd expect them to.

Blocks and steals: Players accumulate them at roughly real-life rates, and I assume they cause more missed shots and turnovers for the other team.

Defensive rating: Lowers or raises the FG% of the player he's guarding. Good luck figuring out how to draft players who get good D ratings. Also note that if a player got an 80 or 90 rating exactly, it was probably because he made first or second team all-defense. We're not going to wait for the all-defense teams to be picked, so don't assume a guy who's had a 90 five straight years will get one again.

This is really helpful, thanks.

1.5 Stephen Curry - Point God

Was worried Eephus would grab him. After slipping out of the LBJ/Durant/Brow tier this was the guy I was hoping to get at #5. Thankfully he has decent defense in the SIM so he's not a huge liability on that end compared to real life. Gonna be fun building a team around this guy.

So that's everybody. That was fast.

1. Yo Mama 21

2. Rodg12 35

3. Jomar 55

4. Eephus 71

5. No. 16, sex machine 128

6. Sammy 135

7. Slapdash 148

8. Timschochet 157

9. Frostillicus 195

10. Pumpnick 196

11. Gr00vus 330

12. JB Breakfus Club 334

13. X 361

14. Scoobus 390

15. 8ebok24 530

16. Moops 631

17. Sparty 703

18. Coyote 723

19. Abe 794

20. Tobias Funke 800

21. Arsenal 818

22. Kev0429 882

23. Kraft 908

24. TRE 915
Draft order bump.

TRE doesn't appear to be around today, but I assume he'll add this to the first few posts and start a Google doc soon.

Meh...This pick sucks. Can go a bunch of different directions, but I'll go with:

1.06 SF Carmelo Anthony

Seems easier to build around him than some of the other guys and I'd rather not worry about oft-injured or already broken guys this early.

Though he might slip to #9 and was looking forward to it. Building around him would at least be an interesting exercise. I'm gonna end up with some boring dopey boring dope.

Looks like I'm at #9 even though I rolled a 195 because TRE cheats. Got it narrowed to two guys and there's nobody else particularly close. Gimme a minute.

Ok so there was a third guy who I dismissed because he bugs me, but it came down to two. One I had last year and would be just fine having him again, but the other has a chance to make a leap forward this year and could find himself being a super star all of a sudden when retread guy has probably reached his ceiling already. I know who the next pick should be.

1.09 - PG John Wall
