Is Philly going to keep Turner past this season (assuming he doesn't get traded)? Almost $9M is a pretty hefty price tag for him.
I dont think so. I dont believe the new head coach and staff is all that enamored in what he provides to the team particularly at what it will costs to pay him.

They will have MCW, Noel, Young (lots of trade suitors/rumors, like with Turner), Hawes and potentially a top 5 and another top 10 pick this draft (currently slotted #3 and #11).
Is Turner really going to get $9 million? I guess he is comparable to the Jennings/Mayo crowd, but it seems steep to me.

I think Turner is gone before the deadline. But what else are the Sixers doing with $9 million next year? They might not want him around to compete for minutes with their draft pick but I'd be surprised if they didn't extend him that offer. Now I highly doubt they match any qualifying offer from another team.

But I think the Sixers are going to try and trade Turner and/or Young and/or Hawes for whatever they can get and ensure more losing. And Hinke wouldn't trade a draft pick for Valanciunas. Some other GM looking for instant help might but this is Morey's brain child. If anything, the talk is the Sixers trade their pick along with New Orlean's pick to get up to 1/2 assuming they lose the lottery.

Man, this draft is loaded. Julius going coast to coast with the two hand jam last night was like a Webber highlight...and he's sliding out of the top 5 for some reason in many mocks.

I've been getting the opposite impression- people starting to think this draft is maybe overrated (although obviously still awesome).

Good back and forth on Randle here. They don't mention that he has T-Rex arms, although I guess that plays a role in his lack of steals. I'm not a fan of comps, but I can't think of anyone like him who is successful in the NBA. Is he athletic on the level of a Blake Griffin?

I think that Parker and Wiggins are superstars. Look at Wiggins box from last night....terrible shooting but his defense was excellent. I think that is one place people are missing on him. "He looks so inconsistent on offense! He can't shoot!" without realizing he is already playing fantastic defense.

I've gushed about Randle being similar to Webber for a while but he's obviously not THAT good as a prospect. He's not athletic like Griffin but he has some range on his jumper, has some legit post up moves, and can dribble much better than a standard 4. Maybe a good college comp is Sheed?

I haven't watched randle enough to have an expert opinion, but webber was an inch taller, had a much bigger wingspan (>4 inches) and had some of the biggest hands I've ever seen. I don't think they are physically great comps.

Well I think people are dissecting these kids a ton this year looking for reasons to hate them since they got so much hype. Granted there are some red flags with all these kids (Wiggins can disappear, Parker has trouble with double-teams, Randle's lack of steals, etc), but it just minor quibbles being blown out of proportion for 19 year olds still developing games against real defenses/offenses for the first time.

If anything I actually think the draft is deeper than I thought. That Cuse-Duke game had 4 legitimate first round picks playing (Ennis, Grant, Parker, Hood), another guy that may end up being productive in the league (Fair), and another guy who I wouldn't be shocked end up as a 3-point specialist for some smart team (Dawkins), and you'd probably want everyone of those first round guys over anyone in last years draft.

I agree with this. At this time, last year, almost no one had seen these guys play. They just knew of their reputations. Now people have started to actually watch them and can see their different weaknesses, so now that's what people are focusing on. All in all, there is a lot of great talent.

Yeah, this is pretty much on point. The prevailing sentiment is certainly that Turner will be gone, but it will be interesting to see how they will get to the cap floor. Without Turner, they will only have 23 million committed for next year (a quarter of which is Jason Richardson's player option). And if they were to trade Young this year for dead money, they would only have 14 million committed.

I agree, you see this dissection thing all the time when there's huge hype. Everyone knew Wiggins was still raw, shouldn't really be a huge surprise. He just oozes potential, just like Parker in a different way.

I don't think the concerns with Randle are minor quibbles, though. He's a PF with only a 6"11 wingspan and not much range on his jumper so far. Nothing minor about that.

The Suns have reportedly halted trade talks with the Lakers for Pau Gasol, with the Lakers apparently seeking too much in return for the veteran big man.
The groin injury that will likely keep Gasol out through the All-Star break also had to have played a role in talks breaking down, while the Suns aren't in any hurry to give up many of their coveted draft picks (they should have four of them). Talks could resume at any time, but with Gasol on the shelf and the Lakers asking a steep price for Gasol, it doesn't appear likely that he'll end up in Phoenix.

Good move by Suns. They aren't a contender with Gasol and no reason to give much for a rental.
Agreed. People assume Lakers only asked for 1 1st and/or were asking for the Pacer pick.

Suns need a long term star. Gasol isn't it at this point. Unless you think Dragic and/or Bledsoe will lead you to promise land, they need to set their sights on a star. Unless they somehow think they'll get it in FA, best way to do so is via the draft.

They can also use those pick(s) and current players from team to move up. And get someone that'll be their for the long term in the process. Wouldn't be shocked at all if they part with Dragic (career year) and/or match any offer Bledsoe gets on the restricted market. Likewise, it's not a given that Bledsoe will be back & some team won't throw a trunkload of money based on his play earlier this season.
This is the much better route IMO than picking up a gimpy rental who doesn't fit their system.

Bobcats picked up 3 out of 4 on a West Coast road trip still hanging on to that 8 spot. Al Jefferson is just unstoppable right now.

Kemba was back last night, it didn't look to effect Jefferson last night, but I sure hope the Bobcats don't get any stupid ideas and try to play through Kemba instead of Jefferson like in the beginning of the year (Jefferson was fighting through an ankle injury though). I enjoy watching Jefferson putting work in on the post.

What are the Bobcats going to do with Ben Gordon? He seems like the ideal buyout candidate but perhaps they are looking to use his expiring contract in a trade?

Pierre Jackson putting some serious heat on the Pelicans to call him up. D-League record 58 points last night on 24-of-33 shooting.

I guess it depends on what they can realistically expect to get. I doubt anyone who lands in the top 7 is going to want to trade down, maybe even beyond that. Maybe they could trade quantity for quality in a future draft. Or maybe they could bundle for an established vet that would be with them longer than this year. But if they can't, having 4 1st rounders, some of which will be the back end of the 1st round, isn't as big an asset as it sounds. They've got multiple guys that are in the development stages already. Every 1st rounder is a guaranteed contract. How much room is there for the 30th or so pick in the draft and his guaranteed contract on that team? What's the value of that pick and the resulting long term salary you might not want vs. a guy who might help you win a playoff series this year, with the added revenue that entails?

First thing we'd need to agree on is if Pau helps them enough to win a series. I'd agree that it would be a good decision, both basketball and business wise, to give up Indy's or their own pick if he was the difference in winning a round. I don't think he is. Phoenix likely finishes in the 6-8 spot and Pau isn't enough of an addition for them to beat SA, POR or OKC.

Using all 4 picks is a pretty bad idea for the reasons you stated, but that doesn't mean they have to give them away.

Use them to facilitate a trade between two others teams, trade up a few spots if there is a guy they are targeting, trade for picks in future years, package with other players, etc.

Lots of options instead of just renting a player that isn't going to help them short term or long term.

They can always draft Euro's and stash them in Europe.

This makes it sound like LAL was only interested in Phoenix's two potentially top 17 picks. Phoenix might be willing to do a later first round pick for the reasons you describe, but in an allegedly deep draft there's no way you deal a top 20 pick for a couple months of Gasol, who may not be the perfect fit for the style they are playing anyway.

@bomani_jones: lakers went down to four dudes, one of whom was wes johnson, and had to bring in a dude who fouled out. and came out on top. dag.

Good ol Cleveland.

I have never heard of that before. apparently it counts as a technical every time he commits a personal.
My team had that happen in HS once, but they made us play with 4.
Every other level you have to play with whatever you got left. Forfeit if you get down to 1.
I would have preferred that, because perhaps the Cavs could have actually managed a comeback in that situation and the Lakers wouldn't have hurt their record.

I saw it in an ACC game once. Rick Barnes took off his jacket and went to the scorer's table to check in when Clemson was down to 4 guys. Good stuff. Once I saw that I always just assumed that was the universal rule.

The thing I don't ever remember seeing is an NBA team quit more than this Cavs team appears to be mailing it in right now. That's six straight losses, none of them all that close

It's disgusting. And not a peep from Comic Sans Dan. Brown should be fired on the spot, Irving traded, and then Chris Grant fired as soon as that trade is complete (he's actually pretty good at trades, but terrible and drafting and building a team and picking a coach).

In a vacuum, Kyrie is the better player obviously. But Kyrie clearly doesn't want to play here. Waiters just doesn't want to play with Kyrie. If you trade Waiters, you probably end up with neither in a couple years. I think with a pass-first PG, Waiters could be a 20 ppg guy.

The other thing is that everyone knows they want to get rid of Waiters and that he is coming off as a locker room cancer so his value is limited. Kyrie is coming off a 2nd ASG. Your return versus how good of a player would probably be better with Kyrie. Maybe I'm off but I imagine you could get a team in the bottom of this years draft to trade their first for Kyrie. Take two top 10 picks in this draft and hopefully shake things up.

Is Kyrie really that unhappy in Cleveland? I really haven't heard anything on the issue. Wondering if I'm missing something or just assuming?

He hasn't come out and said anything but Chad Ford said in a blog that he was privately telling people he wanted out. Ford said it in passing but the comment took on a life of its own. Kyrie later came out and denied it but its not hard to see why he would possibly want out. Now if he does want out though, he would leave money on the table since Cleveland can offer the most money so it remains to be seen if he'll do that.

Either way, something has to change. Deng had to come out and deny comments that he said the locker room was a mess.

It wasn't a really strong denial either. It was more like "well that's your job to report that stuff but I'm here blah blah...".

After Lebron, Gilbert will not be held hostage by a star player again. And KI is no LBJ.

I have never heard of that before. apparently it counts as a technical every time he commits a personal.
My team had that happen in HS once, but they made us play with 4.
Every other level you have to play with whatever you got left. Forfeit if you get down to 1.

I don't think you could get a top 5 for Kyrie but probably a little later in the lottery. One of the things that hurts him is he only has one most season before he gets paid the max. A top 5 pick won't see big money for the first four years.

I think that was a UNC-leaning columnist piece. Dean Smith hated Barnes, which means everyone affiliated with UNC hated Barnes. I was at the game and I thought it was hilarious that Barnes went to check in, so I kind of liked the guy after that
