Ugh. Adding Smith would be indefensible. Thompson is overpaid but the Kings aren't offloading enough salary to have that deal make even a little bit of sense.Maybe if they throw Landry in, but even then it doesn't make basketball sense.

It doesn't sound like a bad idea to me. Wouldn't they be getting rid of $12 mill in mostly worthless players for a $14 mill player that, up until last year in a predictably terrible situation, was a flawed but useful player?

I think it'd be worth a shot that a move back to his more effective position could bring out the best in him.

If they could somehow squeeze Landry in there too, then it would be an amazing move. I can't believe DET would be that dumb though. The Williams/Thompson deal is pushing it.

If dumping Smith means keeping Monroe, it makes sense for Detroit.

The best part to this story is that the Kings think having Smith makes Sac a respectable option for Rondo's free agency next offseason.

Williams' deal is basically expiring and Smith makes twice what Thompson does for an extra year. Smith might have been an intriguing fit back in his shotblocking, rim protecting prime, but now he's just another low IQ gunner that the Kings don't have room for on the court.

Edit: not to mention this will take them into luxury tax territory and as a result basically means they will have to let I. Thomas walk for nothing.

They'd probably need to unload some small contracts, like Thomas Robinson ($3.6 mill) and Meyers Leonard ($2.3 mill), both in the final year. And they wouldn't be able to pick up Lopez' option.

Or I guess they could trade Batum's highly movable contract (and keep Lopez), but I'm sure they'd try to figure out everything to avoid that.

Not as hard as the Clippers or Rockets.

I just don't see it happening. If the big three take massive pay cuts and can free up 20 mil in cap space. Lowry or Gortat are going to run a team 12mil a season. Then the Heat are still stuck with 8 mil to fill 7 roster slots. The only way the Heat make a splash in FA is if Wade drops his salary to 8mil a year.

The Pistons have ended trade talks that would have sent Josh Smith to Sacramento, according to Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.com.
A deal was reportedly discussed for a few days, but it's now "dead" after Detroit pulled the plug on Tuesday morning. The Kings may have been trying to acquire Smith with a package including Jason Thompson, Derrick Williams and an expiring contract, so it's not surprising that the Pistons didn't bite, but this doesn't mean that Smoove won't be shopped around for better offers.

Absolutely next year b/c Irving is still on his rookie deal and Love's # is still reasonable for 2014. I'm going with this scenario as well. Throw in Stephenson at the 2 and that's a pretty nasty starting 5 with Varajeo.

Definitely. Not sure what a max for LeBron is this summer, but at worst, the Cavs have to get rid of one or two of Bennett, Thompson or Varejao. Should be easy to do as all 3 contracts are either over or can be 'terminated' after this year. Much more realistic than most scenarios being tossed around IMO.

I'm ok with it. Chance for a franchise player which you likely won't get at 4 and 12.

I don't know a ton about these guys so if Wiggins/Parker are that type of player, then yeah, for sure. I'm just not sure from listening to scouting reports, etc., over the last couple of weeks that they are light years better than the rest of the top 5-6 guys.
