*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (2 Viewers)

no team ever traded such a highly regarded asset for an expiring superstar.
This is an interesting question that I actually gave some thought to yesterday. What's the most valuable (as judged at the time of the trade, not ex post) piece a team had ever received in return for a departing star?

Al Jefferson was a highly thought of piece when the KG trade went down. Lamar Odom was a very good player who came back in the Shaq trade. I don't think either of those guys measured up to Wiggins as a trade chip, but they were probably more valued than Klay. Jeff Green (# 5 pick) is another one for Ray Allen.
exactly, Big Al was an asset but he wasn't a Wiggins or Jabari asset. Knicks gave up a collection of crap to get Melo. Odom was a solid piece to add to a title contender but nowhere near a stud asset. Nets dealt Marbury to get Kidd (at the time Marbury was pretty valuable)

Coming up blanks on big assets dealt for expiring stars.

All of what TRE said. There's no need to panic and take the best offer right now if it's not something you're in love with. Enough teams are interested in adding a 25 year old who may be the best PF in the league that you can afford to wait and hope somebody blinks first and gives up something you really want.

But yeah, Wolves fans are delusional.

Listen the last thing I want is for Lebron to get K Love and lock up the eastern conference for the next half decade, but K Love is an expiring FA. A team that trades for him will need absolute assurances that he will resign with them at seasons end. Not sure he is in a position to do that for anything other than a Cali team or Cleveland since they got Lebron. Minny might be too stubborn for their own good and not get anything for him and watch him walk away for free.

Tell me how this happens. All of the teams pull their offers at the same time? He's going to get traded to someone. There is no rush.

It's a game of who blinks first. If no one blinks then Minnesota either does a sign and trade next year and nets very little in return or they get nothing and Love walks.

YOU'RE DELUSIONAL!!!

I think the Wolves will ultimately choose a package that features picks more than players.
At this point with Boston having somewhere in the neighborhood of 9 first round picks in the next three years, I agree. I think we see a three team deal, and it could be Boston, Golden State, Minny, with lots of Love and draft picks. Cavs are missing a chance to win now, but I respect their feelings about Wiggins, just hope the kid is as good as advertised, we know how good Love is right now

It's possible somebody sweetens their deal and Flip gets what he wants (or at least something he can live with)

It's also possible the teams he's dealing with decide to walk away, and Minnesota ends up getting even less than they could get now.

But if he doesn't like what's being offered now, how much is he really losing by getting less/nothing?

"I'll give you a bag of #### for that pile of gold."

"No!"

*Guy pulls out a gun and takes the gold*

"Ha-ha!! You could have had a bag of ####!"

The less time you own him the less the demand for him will be since he is an expiring. Its precisely why Utah deal DWill a year and a half before he became a FA. Melo was basically sticking to the Knicks so the nuggets had to deal with only the Knicks.

You think Phx will be trading tons of assets to acquire half a season of Love?

I keep hearing in NY about the Knicks 2015 cap room and all that. Who is even available next year as a FA?

Klove, Dragic, Rondo. anyone else worthy of salivating over?

That would be preferable to taking a crappy deal.

Wow, really love what Charlotte has been doing since they hired that new GM. Everyone laughed at them for signing Big Al, people were saying, he's not making them a championship contender, why not keep sucking for 2014 draft class? They had a year where they finally started winning, now other players are starting to sign there as FA's and they can easily be a top 4 seed in the weakened eastern conference.
And now they are on the good enough to make the playoffs, not good enough to win a championship treadmill.

Lemme get this straight, you would prefer the TWolves allow Love to leave as a FA with no compensation instead of getting the cheap contracts of Waiters, Bennet and multiple picks?

Not delusional...just tired and angry. Fans have been supporting a ****ty team, playing in a ****ty arena, with a multi-billionaire for an owner who annually sells draft picks to other teams so "Bill Lumberg's stock can go up a quarter of a point."

The Wolves have all but lost me over the past decade as a result. Haven't spent a single dime to support them (got a few free tickets to a few games through connections), and over the past 3-4 years, I'm not sure if I've even watched 2-3 total games of theirs on TV. Their only value, much like many of the threads in the FFA, is "reality TV." Watching that on-going, slow-motion car crash...and all of the best and worst in people that becomes visible as a direct result. It'd be better for most of us if the team were simply contracted. Go make fun of the Sucks whenever Packer fans get too full of themselves...thinking that they are the ones out on the field in Lambeau helping the team win games. Glen Taylor no longer losing money on the team. Drive a wrecking ball through that dump of a Target Center, et al. Or if they did keep the team here indefinitely, at least let them play in Xcel over in St. Paul...which makes Target Center look like the equivalent of a junior high gymnasium.

Only like 4 or 5 teams have actually won a title over the last decade and a half. Just being in the conversation is good enough for most folks. Memphis went from junk franchise to legit playoff contender when they got Zbo and Marc. Their fans are thrilled about their team. Charlotte HAD to start winning, they were becoming a running joke as a perennial lottery team. Don't think any Charlotte fan today would rather they didn't sign Big Al and instead were able to draft at #5 last year after a horrible season.

Lebron opts out, 37.4% chance.
I already lost 100 on betting on Melo's future. But I would wager even more that Lebron aint leaving cleveland unless they secede from the States.
I was kidding... I think he is in Cleveland for the rest of his career.

If it's a sign and trade after the season then you take that deal. Right now? No way.

Could Charlotte sneak out Boozer too? If so, I may drink a tiny bit of Pollardaide with my book.
They've got about $4 mill to do it, and you'd think they'd pretty much bid all that. They've got an Al/Kemba/Lance window that could end as soon as 12 months from now, and they may want to give the baby PF's another year to develop.

ATL has more cap space than that though, so the $4 mill might not be enough.

Hey, Rud, or anybody else with magical unlimited likes, would you mind throwing out likes for me for every remotely positive Charlotte Hornets comment.

It's Lance Stephenson Day!

dude I feel you, there is nothing worse than your team being owned by an incompetent owner and useless GM.

I was saying this the day i heard about K Love's extension (with the early opt out because they were saving the 5 year for Rubio) and i was completely shocked that an NBA GM would not do everything in his power to sign a young stud up for the long term. I wish I can find my posts on this, I for sure was venting about that signing here, completely flabbergasted.

Was that the same sentiment in Minny at the time? I have seen some horrible GM decisions in my time, mainly the Billy King trade for Gerald Wallace which literally made zero sense even in NBA 2K. But that Kahn decision has to go up as the worst GM decision since the rationale behind it was so ridiculous. Even if Rubio was gonna be an all timer, they could have locked him up for 4 years AFTER he was an RFA, why not give Love the 5 year? I am asking about the sentiments then, obviously now everyone knows how awful that decision was.

Look at sign and trades, its usually trade exceptions and some bad draft picks, no real assets ever get dealt in those trades.

Hopefully he'll take a lit bit less to go with a contender in Charlotte rather than chasing the money in Miami.

Things Bass would never have said two weeks ago Alex.

He doesn't have a say in it.

A partial waiver claim is a bid for a single dollar amount. If no team makes a full waiver claim, the player is awarded to the team submitting the highest bid in a partial waiver claim. If multiple teams bid the same amount, the player is awarded to the team with the worst record.

I did not like Lance too much since he was too much of a "showboater" but that dude plays defense with 110% passion and energy. So surprised his market was pretty limited considering what Jordan freaking Hill, Swaggy P, Ben Freaking Gordon got this offseason.

You're confused. Unless crappy picks and trade exceptions is better than Waiters, Bennett and mult 1sts in your opinion.

Magic sign Ridnour.

Even on a day such as this, I can still find sympathy for poor Magic fans. Keep your chin up, Cappy, Football seasons' almost here.

Pretty excited for Waiters and Bennett now. Those guys don't have any red flags, right?
They have plenty, but Waiters is going to be put in a spot to be more successful. I'd bet on his value increasing between now and February. I wouldn't bet anything on Bennett until he shows something in a meaningful game, but those summer league reports are good ones.

I wasn't sure what they had left. I heard it would have to be 2MM at least and wasn't sure that the Heat even had that.

Honestly we can cross the Waiters/Bennett bridge when the trade deadline approaches and see where the Wolves stand and if anybody is making a monster offer. All I know is that isn't getting it done now, and it shouldn't.

Yeah I kind of agree, but I have no idea how the money will work if its just youngsters for K Love. Don't the salaries have to match?
