exactly, Big Al was an asset but he wasn't a Wiggins or Jabari asset. Knicks gave up a collection of crap to get Melo. Odom was a solid piece to add to a title contender but nowhere near a stud asset. Nets dealt Marbury to get Kidd (at the time Marbury was pretty valuable)This is an interesting question that I actually gave some thought to yesterday. What's the most valuable (as judged at the time of the trade, not ex post) piece a team had ever received in return for a departing star?no team ever traded such a highly regarded asset for an expiring superstar.
Al Jefferson was a highly thought of piece when the KG trade went down. Lamar Odom was a very good player who came back in the Shaq trade. I don't think either of those guys measured up to Wiggins as a trade chip, but they were probably more valued than Klay. Jeff Green (# 5 pick) is another one for Ray Allen.
Coming up blanks on big assets dealt for expiring stars.
