He said they got three big wins late and the voting stopped on the 2-line. As in they didn't even vote to put them on the 1-line. Hell they are the #6 overall and aren't even ahead of Kentucky.

I think maybe his point is that Duke had a case for a #1 seed and UNC should not have gotten a #1 seed, which, if that's what he's saying, is a defensible position. I personally thought that Duke and UNC should both get 1s and Gonzaga should be a 2.

Best part of these games if you look at the bracket and think this game or that will be a good one to watch in the early rounds, but you can never predict the truly great ones with the fantastic finishes. You go in thinking ho hum and get a really barn burner with a great finish.

Wisconsin got hosed because they got pounded by UNC and at Creighton when they still had Watson, and because Cuse, Georgetown and Oklahoma turned out to be poop. Those weren't "good" wins like they could have been. Being 2nd in the B1G and finishing 2nd in the tourney wasn't enough to overcome that in the eyes of the committee

Everyone on the cbs show seemed to think the committee did an amazing job selecting teams and seeding them. So you would think the quality/efficiency of the teams, when graphed in order of seed, would make a nice downward trending line, right?
Nope. The seed curve is a ####### mess this year as it usually is.
Spikes above the blue line are underseeded teams, and spikes below are overseeded.
No surprise Wichita St. is the grossest example of underseeding over in the 10 seed area of the graph. They should be a 2 according to kenpom, but got a 10. Other spikes on the graph include St. Mary's, and to a lesser extent, West Virginia and SMU.
The most overseeded team is Virginia Tech who got a 5 but should have gotten an 11 according to kenpom. They are joined by Minnesota, Maryland, and Arizona. Will probably be including these teams as first weekend upset candidates.

No complaints about UCLA's seeding- they were flat against Arizona when it counted so this is what they get. If they can win the first 2 games they'll have to beat Kentucky again, which is a tall order. But you gotta beat the teams in front of you. I'm optimistic, since Lonzo Ball's thumb seems to be OK.

Were you guys (Gamecocks) good this season? I saw not a minute of SEC action except Duke beating Florida. Marquette had a pretty good season, better than expected, under former Duke PG and assistant Steve Wojciechowski.

With UNC and Duke in the arena it's doubtful, IMO. But you might score Sunday tickets from a Troy, Marquette, Texas Southern or Arkansas/SH fan after they lose on Friday.

Marquette is sort of an uneven team. Overachieved a bit this year. They beat Nova in January but then lost back to back to Providence and St. John's. They can shoot though and will be a tough out if they are on fire. They aren't very long but Luke Fischer at 6'11" can be troublesome. He's got a "white guy motor."

Here is the thing, if I take away kenpom, how can anyone really justify Wichita State as a great team? The subjective eye test? I'm sure they are better than a 10 seed but I'm not sure a computer saying they are the 8th best is any better at judging just because all they proved is they are good at being mediocre to bad teams.

Don't worry, you didn't diss my team so that isn't why I take objection to it. You just make it sound like some albatross when in reality, I think over-reliance on KenPom has potentially worse consequences, especially from a selection criteria. I still use it and enjoy it but all those years when Wisconsin, UVA were the top teams every year. You'd have teams trying to game KenPom, blowing out a bunch of mediocre teams and playing at a slow pace.

Arizona got a great draw as the 2 in the weakest region and they play every game close to home. I think they have the easiest path to the Final 4 in that region.

Gotcha, thanks for clearing me up. Yeah, I would actually expect Gonzaga to lose to Notre Dame if that matchup materializes, given the 37-38 minutes ND put together against Duke Saturday night. (I'm assuming West Virginia is lousy as usual.) I want to like Gonzaga's basketball team and what they represent (apart from a loathsome and pretty well-known Supreme Court case argued by none other than John Roberts) but I'm actually pretty much over them beating Loyola, Pepperdine, San Francisco, San Diego and Portland like drums and then claiming a high seed out of it. I'm delighted that BYU and St. Mary's are in the WCC too but honestly, I'm tired of it.

That's basically what I'm doing here, using and enjoying it. No albatrosses.
I will say though that I always submit a bracket based only on kenpom and it's always near the top.

I said it might be possible for both Oregon and Gonzaga to get 1 seeds and one of them shipped off to the south but not likely. They beat Florida, Arizona, Iowa State, and St. Mary's 3 times. That's at least 5 top 25 RPI wins. That's how they get their high seed despite the WCC.
