Are there any good beer bars with a wide selection of craft beer in New Orleans?

Not really. Only the Avenue Pub.

Is the Avenue Pub the best place to go for craft beer in NO? Anywhere else I should check out for good beer?

Yes. That's pretty much your best bet in terms of craft beer. The Bulldog is another decent option. Cooter Brown's has a ton of beer but it's mostly stuff that you find everywhere else.

Is Steins Market & Deli the best bottle shop in town?

Definitely. And it's also one of my favorite places to eat. EVERYTHING they make there is fantastic.

Great. Thanks a lot for the input, Tchouptioulas and Gadabout. I will have to try to check those places out.

For whatever reason, it seems like Louisiana has a relatively limited selection of out-of-state breweries that distribute within the state. I think I read somewhere that Louisiana has some regulatory laws that try to protect its local breweries, Abita and NOLA, from outside competition. At least it looks like Sweetwater and Terrapin have started distributing to Louisiana within the past few months.

While it wasn't the most extensive craft list(not the Avenue pub) - I jumped into Barcadia last year(mainly because I was freezing to death) - and found they had a bunch - http://barcadianeworleans.com/drink/ - that covered the bar back.

At the time I remember some Rogue and Stone brews in addition to a lot of the local stuff - they had plenty. And to top it off they had pinball and video game - my wife and I thought we had found heaven. Ended up warming up and playing pinball for around 4 hours after leaving the Fairgrounds.

There are no such laws. Plenty of good beer to be found from all over the country. They are not always in the same place, and there are definitely some breweries that don't distribute here, but as far as I know it is not due to regulations.

Fishing- Bowfishing in Port Sulphor. It's a night trip. You go out on an air boat that rides seven, Five charters and the captain and deck hand. The boat has a generator and lights attached to the front. You chase redfish through the wetlands until you get your limit. It's one of the funnest things i've ever done in my life.http://www.rodnreel.com/cajunair/
This sounds awesome and completely different. None of us are big hunters. Easy for beginner group to use the bow? I plan to reach out to them for more details, but rough idea of cost, what time it starts, how long it lasts?

Also, any suggestions on what to do with the redfish after? None of us live near there. Other than shipping home on ice, thought maybe we could find someone to work up a dinner with what we caught.

If you plan on drinking hard liquor, sneak it in using an old plastic flask or one of those new bladder bags.

Cops- Do what they say. Don't argue. They will arrest you if you give them a hard time.
What's the attitude at the festival towards "other" alternatives?
Bowfishing isn't that hard. You have to get used to aiming about two inches in front of the fish because of refraction. If you're going to do it, I'd suggest a little practice. Stand on a chair and shoot a two liter bottle 5-10 feet in front of you.I don't know what to tell you about what to do with the fish. You can't bring them back to your room. That would be a big pain in the ###. Give them to the captain. He may give you a discount on the price of the trip.

The last time I went it was $100.00 a man with tip. You shove off right at nightfall. The boat ride alone is worth the price. They drive you out into the wetlands, about a thirty minute ride till you get to the wetland areas. And then you start fishing and drinking. The captain is this big ole coonass from the bayou. Everytime someone shoots a fish he shouts out "Good shot hoss!!!". You stay out there until you catch your limit. 5 reds each. Usually about 4 or 5 hours. Great time.

Other "alternatives" at the Fest are cool. Nobody cares as long you aren't wide open about it. I brought my daughter to see Maroon 5 last year. She asks me "Is that smell what I think it is?" Cops aren't looking for it. I've never seen anyone get in any trouble because of it. It's just about everywhere.
thanks a bunch. we are confirmed for 2nd weekend of jazz fest. have at least 9 confirmed and may end up being closer to 15, waiting confirmation. pretty pumped. current plan is to do bowfishing thursday night. jazzfest saturday. big dinner at cochon maybe fri night. plenty of other mixed in on all days. cant wait. really appreciate all of your suggestions.

Most people cant afford destination bach parties and i imagine your bp will be alot smaller than 10-15
Recently had to pass one up in Vegas b/c of cost. And I make closer to the top range, but also have mortgage, kid, etc.

I would opt for something other than Vegas but that's just me. I think NO would be fun, but Jazz Fest is a total cluster from what I hear, but big festivals bug me so that might not be an issue for you.

Denver/Boulder, especially Boulder, would offer some cool outdoor options that would be more than just parting if you are looking for that.
thanks and agreed. i'm fortunate with my job to have some options but have done vegas with other friends and just last year did beer tour, snowmobiling, and snowboarding in denver/boulder. one of my best friends lives in boulder and it was a fking awesome time. highly recommend and happy to provide recommendations. wanted to do something a little different this time.

Buckfast thanks for asking and Gadabout thanks for replying. I'm a huge craft beer guy and have been semi-disappointed with beer selection in NoLa previously. Glad to learn about the above.

At this point the trip is really coming together. Some of my brothers are even driving down, so should be able to transport anything not kosher for the airplane. Pumped about that. At this point the biggest question is what hotel? I've had Pavillion recommended. I'm also a well traveled Marriott and Hilton member with points, but majority of my group are not frequent travelers.

Lastly, open to suggestions on adult establishments / options. Got a great suggestion from Gadabout that I plan on arranging, but open to other ideas...what ya got?

Book something ASAP...especially with that size group you don't want to be spread out. Not gonna be cheap, so you probably want to use those points where you can. Hell, maybe even look at VRBO

Hotels

Where you stay is primarily dependant on what your trip will consist of, budget, etc. There is no shortage of hotels in NOLA at all different prices.

French Quarter

• Bar none the best hotel IMO is the Royal Sonesta….located right on Bourbon St. and is pretty affordable (Depending on the time of year). I highly suggest if you are going for a bachelor party to see if you can swing a balcony room (make sure it faces Bourbon) for the weekend

• Tons of other hotels in the quarter, just post any deals you’re thinking about and the local here can answer some questions

CBD

• The CBD goes from Poydras St. to Canal Blvd. and are typically cheaper than the French quarter, in exchange for a few minutes longer walk. You’ll find multiple different hotels of all of your major hotel brands (Hilton, Marriot, Sheraton, etc) here

• The hotels on Canal are about a 5 minute walk closer to Bourbon St. than the ones on Poydras St.

• You’ll find Harrah’s spanning the entire city block from Poydras to Canal near the river

Warehouse District

• A nice handful of restaurants and night life in the Warehouse District, which is typically where all of your young professionals live and many locals frequent at night

• A decent amount of hotels here

• Walking to the quarter is probably out of the question, but it’s a very cheap cab ride

Rooms at La Pavillion are very small IIRC

I stay at the Embassy Suites on points - my wife and I like the location better than the other Hilton properties. But it is not in the Quarter - some take that as a drawback - I am at Jazzfest for shows not to hang out on Bourbon for long if at all.

Restaurant access is fantastic - It is across the street from Root, Peche is down the street, Cochon is easy walk, Cochon Butcher a bit further, Capdaville is a neat little place nearby. Not to far to Herbsaint and Emerils - so if it is restaurants you want it's a great area - I doubt that is important for your party.

For JF it is across the street from Republic and down the street from Howlin Wolf for late night shows - walkable to the Lafayette Square Wednesday night show. Rusty Nail has a show or 2 close by. Harrahs is 2 blocks or so away. There is a streetcar stop down at Julia that can take you all the way to French Market and easy walk to Frenchmen - however it does not run real late and that is a big drawback - so you need to cab it to there. In fact it isn't all that far to the HOB on Decatur.

I've also stayed at the HGI on Gravier - it is in the CBD - easy walk to Bourbon and Canal - nice place with a pool on the roof that is relaxing.

I've been in the Hilton Riverside to go to Dragos for charbroiled oysters(very good!) - it's a big place - but never stayed there as the buffet breakfast is better at ES in my opinion. It may be your best bet with points at this late date for availability - in the last couple of years the Hilton opens up on Priceline/Hotwire with some decent rates at the last minute

I know there is a Courtyard across the street from the ES on Julia - I don't go to Marriotts for work so I don't know about it - but it looks nice.Maybe someone can give you some help on those properties

If you are bringing a car - check on parking rates - they can be very steep.

Meh on Le Pavillion. Small and antiquated rooms and a several block walk from the Quarter. Royal Sonesta is nice for being right in the quarter - I like the JW Marriott on Canal right across from the Quarter.

Walked by Deuce McAllister's new bar and grill, Ole Saint, the other day and noticed that they probably have the biggest tap selection in all of the quarter. They seemingly had every LA and MS brewery represented, along with some other southern breweries.

Now there's a place to sit and drink beer in the quarter. Plus the chef is competent and the menu looks pretty legit.

The old Checkered Parrot. Royal and Iberville'ish.

Interesting.....that place is huge and has a lot of potential. Hope it's good.

Looks like a great schedule. FWIW - Tipsy will be at Fiya Fest too IIRC. Also, Gospel Brunch at HOB is probably a tourist trap and you could probably miss this IMO. If you really want to see gospel, you can hit up the gospel tent at Jazz Fest for a few songs...especially since you're going to McClures anyway and there will be a lot of food there.

Oh and bring sunscreen.

Will be at JF on Saturday, shoot me a PM
If you hit JazzFest hit up TF... met up with him at fest one year and guy is legit and does it right.
appreciate it GB. This Saturday is gonna be interesting, not sure what time my parents can grab the kids; so don't know when I can get there...so I might just be weaseling in next to some friends who get there earlier. Hopefully they land a good base

Hey palmeersteel - I see you will be at Shaggy's Boil on Sunday - I'll be there(as well as fest all weekend) - MAKE SURE YOU ALLOW TIME TO GET THERE. That location is right behind the race track and if you head in to the fairgrounds area late you will be stuck in a big traffic jam. I'm not sure how close you can park back there as it is residential - so i'd plan on getting in to the neighborhood by 6 or so before a lot of people start heading out of the fairgrounds.

I'll be at Midnite Disturbers set for sure on Saturday - make sure you hit that one! Jazz and Heritage Stage

I'm organizing my fantasy football league's draft weekend in New Orleans the weekend of August 1-3.

I'm looking to plan a dinner out with 10-12 guys for some good Cajun/creole seafood in New Orleans on Saturday night. Any recommendations of a place with great food and atmosphere that would accomodate a group of that size?

Thanks a lot!

Where are you staying?Jacques Imos is the best in the city for that in my opinion. Followed by Dante's Kitchen and then Emerils NOLA.

We are staying in a house on the east side of New Orleans City Park in the Fillmore neighborhood.

Thanks for the recommendations! I was looking at both Jacques-Imo's and Dante's Kitchen as possible options based on Yelp reviews and what I've heard around here about Dante's. I think both of those places would be great options.

Gonna be doing a lot of cabbing/driving from that area. Might want to get a # of a good car service so you wont be waiting a lot

Are there any good beer bars with a wide selection of craft beer in New Orleans?

Is the Avenue Pub the best place to go for craft beer in NO? Anywhere else I should check out for good beer?

Is Steins Market & Deli the best bottle shop in town?
http://cooterbrowns.com/ If they don't have the beer you're looking for, nobody else does either.
The best beer in town is now at the Avenue Pub. It's not really a pub, more or less a slightly improved old dive, but it's got a great selection, plus an upstairs balcony overlooking the avenue.

I am definitely planning on going by Avenue Pub at some point during the weekend. Their beer list is pretty impressive.

Our fantasy football draft weekend in New Orleans was incredibly awesome time. All of the recommendations that I got from the FBG community in this thread were perfect. We ate dinner at Jacques Imo's one night, which was absolutely delicious Cajun/creole food and exactly what I was looking for. We also went to the Avenue Pub one night, which had a great beer selection and a really cool patio and balcony.

We had lots of great food over the weekend. Our pre-draft lunch was catered by McClure's Barbecue, which was, of course, fantastic. On Saturday night, we went to a midnight crawfish boil at the Three Legged Dog, which was delicious mix of fresh crawfish, potatoes, corn, pineapple, mushrooms, garlic cloves, and Cajun spices. We also went by Stein's Market and Deli to pick up some nice craft beer from their cool beer stock room in the back.

In addition to Avenue Pub, some of the other cool bars that we went to were the Dungeon (a heavy metal bar in an old, allegedly haunted house), Blue Nile (a cool jazz bar along Frenchmen St. with a decent beer selection), and LaFitte's Blacksmith Shop (one of the oldest continuously run bars in America). We also won some money playing blackjack at Harrah's. We were out until about 5 AM every morning, but still forced ourselves to get up every morning to play soccer, football, and tennis.

The house we rented off of VRBO was really sweet. It had a media room with a 108" projection screen where we held our auction draft. It also had fishtanks in the walls of the living room and shower, which were pretty impressive.

If you are looking for New Orleans bachelor party ideas, I highly recommend everything that I listed above. Our draft weekend was pretty epic.

Our draft weekend was pretty epic.
that is living well. Nicely done.
