NFL Vacancies, Part Deux (1 Viewer)

Not open for further replies.
Minnesota Vikings Defensive Coordinator -- Ted Cottrell has been offered the Viking DC job, according to the Minny Tribune. If Cottrell declines the offer, Bears DC Greg Blache is considered to be next in line. In a puzzling development, Dave McGinnis, who has personal ties to Mike Tice and already said he could work for him if the situation arose, has not interviewed for the position.
Thanks again Woodrow for keeping us who are interested up to date with the latest. I've heard that Minnesota requested permission to interview Blache, but the Bears have denied that request stated that they would want to interview Blache for the HC position IF it is still available next week.Is this common practice in the NFL? It seems that Angelo has put all his faith in landing Saban, because all his supposed actions blatantly lead us all to that conclusion.

Wood's on this like stink on chit  Keep up the OUTSTANDING work Wood, as I'm involved in 2 dynasty drafts shortly and appreciate the most valuable info!

Woody-You might as well add Kevin Gilbride's name to the list of coordinator vacancies. Regardless of whom becomes head coach, my 5 year old son has a better chance of being Buffalo's OC than Gilbride next year...

This whole thing with the bears is frustrating. Once again, who they choose as a head coach is being determined by who everyone else takes. Ya know, they do the same thing on draft day too. Rather than be progressive they simply wait for every other team to make a choice and take whatever is left to them.:sigh:I would have liked Mora Jr.I don't want Saban.I am lukewarm on Fassel (who may very well get back into the mix).I don't want Crennel.Lovie may be a good talent evaluator but I don't know much about him.In short- this sucks.
Besides Mora (who I'm glad we DIDN'T get) who DO you want?
I wanted Coughlin- even though he wasn't a name Angelo mentioned. After that I liked Mora Jr.- but only because of the excellent assistants he planned to bring with him.Third, I'd like Friedgen- but I don't think that is going to happen. I would rather have Fassel than Saban. Oh yeah, I don't understand why Marv Levy hasn't been mentioned- I'd like him right after Coughlin.
Yea, Mora would have brought in some good assistants, but what happens in a year or two if they leave for other vacancies? What are you left with. If those coordinators are that good, why not just hire THEM to be your head coach?

Updated to include this weekend's developments, including the ongoing craziness in Chicago and Oakland...

Head Coaching Vacancies

New York Giants -- Tom Coughlin agreed to a 4 year deal valued at $11 million. The hire was probably the least surprising, which is why it was the first one done. Mara wanted the "anti Fassel" and got him in Coughlin, a noted disciplinarian.

Washington Redskins -- WOW. After interviewing retreads in Fassel, Denny Green and Ray Rhodes, the Skins dropped a blockbuster on the world by persuading Joe Gibbs to return as Skins head coach.. The deal is worth at least $28 million and gives Gibbs total control of football operations. There is talk that Gibbs will be given a potential ownership position and maintain executive level authority after he steps down as coach, as well. Gregg Williams, the Bills deposed coach and former Titans DC, has signed on as Gibbs' DC and Joe Bugel has rejoined the team as Assistant Head Coach and offensive line coach.
Atlanta Falcons -- After a wide open search, that looked to continue later this week with LSU head coach Nick Saban, the Falcons have found their man, hiring Jim Mora (the son) as the next Falcons head coach. Mora was thought to be the front runner after coming back for a second interview, until Saban was brought into the mix. However, Saban's agent was told that the planned interview was called off, and the Falcons moved quickly to lock up Mora. Mora brought Greg Knapp (SF's OC) along to serve in the same capacity with the Falcons.
Arizona Cardinals -- Dennis Green has accepted a 5-year deal as head coach. The Cardinals had interviewed four people: Crennel, Fassel, Green and Jim Johnson but, surprisingly, landed their first choice in Denny Green. In one of the funniest announcements of the coaching carousel season, Denny Green has apparently offered Sean "ESPN Goon" Salisbury the QB coach slot.
Buffalo Bills -- It now appears that the Bills have whittled their search down to three guys: Mularkey, Weis and Jauron. It's believed that Mularkey has the edge, but then again the Bills have interviewed seven people and have remained mum on the situation so we'll keep you posted.
Chicago Bears -- Around and round we go, where the Bears stop, nobody knows. Okay, here's what we know so far, the Bears tried to sign Nick Saban but it didn't work out, due to a myriad of issues, according to ESPN's Len Pasquarelli. Then word hit that the Bears had ALREADY interviewed Cal coach Jeff Tedford last week as a secret candidate. but Tedford politely declined. So now attention appears to have turned to two coaches, one surprising and the other long rumored. Jerry Angelo interviewed Pit Oline coach Russ Grimm this weekend and has requested a second interview with STL DC Lovie Smith, according to the Chicago Sun Times.
Oakland Raiders -- The Raiders are no closer to having a head coach now than a few weeks ago, having either been rebuffed or beaten out for everyone they've interviewed or requested an interview with to date. The latest Al Davis machinations have him turning his attention to Mo Carthon, Sean Payton, Wade Phillips and Rick Neuheisel on a few accounts. The SF Gate is reporting that Al Saunders (KC's OC) and Mike Heimerdinger (Ten OC) are also in the hunt.Coordinator Vacancies

Atlanta Falcons Offensive Coordinator -- San Francisco 49ers OC Greg Knapp has agreed to join Jim Mora as the Falcons new OC.
Arizona Cardinals Offensive Coordinator The Arizona Cardinals have received permission from the Baltimore Ravens to talk to offensive line coach Jim Colletto about the offensive coordinator position, according to the East Valley Tribune of Mesa, Ariz.
New York Jets Defensive Coordinator -- Talks for the vacant Jets DC job have turned to Ravens secondary coach Donnie Henderson and TB coach Rod Marinelli. Gregg Williams interviewed for the job but will instead join Joe Gibbs in Washington. Deposed Giants DC Johnnie Lynn interviewed this week but is not considered a favorite.
Pittsburgh Steelers Defensive Coordinator -- It looks like Cowher is prepared to bring someone in from the outside for the vacant defensive coordinator job, and is expected to interview his third and final candidate on Thursday when Ted Cottrell (former Jets DC) comes to town. Cottrell joins **** LeBeau and Greg Blache as potential replacements for Lewis. LeBeau was the Steelers defensive coordinator during the Super Bowl year in 1996, and will interview on Tuesday.
Cleveland Browns Offensive Coordinator -- As expected Terry Robiskie has been promoted to offensive coordinator after serving as receivers coach this year. Robiskie has many years of experience, serving in the OC capacity in Oakland under Art Shell and also serving as a coach/interim head coach in Washington during the Norv Turner era.
Washington Redskins Offensive and Defensive Coordinators -- According to published reports, Gregg Williams (the recently deposed Buffalo Bills head coach) will join Joe Gibbs' staff as defensive coordinator. Apparently Joe Bugel is also going to be the assistant head coach and line coach; whether that's in lieu of a traditional offensive coordinator remains to be seen.
New York Giants Offensive and Defensive Coordinators -- Tom Coughlin has hired Tim Lewis, formerly defensive coordinator in Pittsburgh, as his new coordinator. No word yet on who will manage the offensive coordinator position.
San Francisco 49ers Offensive and Defensive Coordinators -- As expected, Ted Tollner has accepted a promotion to offensive coordinator of the 49ers. It is also believed that the 49ers will look in house for their new defensive coordinator, likely in the form of Greg Macklin, who currently serves as linebackers coach and assistant head coach.
San Diego Chargers Defensive Coordinator -- Ted Cottrell is due to interview with San Diego today, on his way to Pittsburgh where he will interview with Cowher for the same position. Cottell also has a standing offer from the Vikings, and will likely decide between the three by the end of the week.Front Office Vacancies

Miami Dolphins GM -- The Dolphins have now interviewed seven candidates: Seattle's Ted Thompson, former NO GM Randy Mueller, Dolphins Director of Player Personnel Rick Spielman, former Dolphins great Paul Warfield, Baltimore Player Personnel Director Phil Savage, TB's Tim Ruskell, and NY Giants assistant GM Jerry Reese. The Dolphins expect to make a decision by the end of this week, and are also reportedly close to signing Ron Wolf to a contract to serve as a consultant.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM -- Tampa Bay introduced Bruce Allen as the team's new General Manager last week.
Oakland Raiders GM -- Bruce Allen left the team and there is talk that Mike Lombardi, director of player personnel, may join him. But the personnel hire probably won't happen until Davis has a coach in place. Stay tuned.Cheers

I'm getting dizzy. While the Russ Grimm news intrigues me, it doesn't excite me. He's been with the Steelers since '01 and was with the Skins before that from 1992-2000, but don't know much more about him other than that he was a HOG.The Saban thing was a joke. Talk about ***** (rhymes with brick) tease! I didn't think he was coming out all along (gratuitous gloat), and the impression I get is that the Bears are starting their HC search, part Deux.

OK, Bears are making it official that the job is coming down to Russ Grimm or Lovie Smith...http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1706414Cheers
THe longer this Bears coaching search goes on, the more crystal clear it is that Angelo is looking for someone who is going to be his #####.Friedgen, Saban, Tedford have all turned him down. Now he is looking at Grimm who is an offensive line coach. OR Lovie Smith. DOn't get me wrong, the more I read about Smith the more I like but still...Combine all these college coaches turning Amgelo down with all the 'head butting' that went on between Angelo and Jauron and it seems clear to me that Angelo just wants a lackey. Will we have a back bone in '04?

Russ Grimm?????? He's an o-line coach!!!! He has no idea how to be a head coach and has not even been a coordinator. This is a joke with Bears fans being the butt of it!!!!If the Bills hire Murlarky, Grimm will be in line to get the O-Coordinators job.

I just listened to Grimm being interviewed by the media. Honestly, he didn't have much media savvy. When asked what type of offense he would have he replied "We will run and we will pass. Seriousely, we will most likely do both those things." (Paraphrased)You gotta be kidding me.He sounded very confused. He also said "I don't know what to say, I've never been in this position before. I'll just have to tell you guys what I think". :wall: I mean, you could hear him breathing into the mic. Horrible.

The Browns announced today that they have just hired the Miami Hurricanes offensive co-ordinator as their new TIGHT ENDS coach, fueling speculation that the club intends to select Kellen Winslow, Jr. with their first pick.

As for Russ Grimm, the O-line coach with the 31st ranked rushing game, he's an old buddy of Bears pro personnel director Bobby DePaul. This was probably Angelo doing DePaul and Grimm a favor, because league experts tell us Grimm is about as qualified for the job as you and me.

One called longtime NFL front office guy described Grimm as "a less intelligent Mike Tice,'' which is pretty frightening. On the other hand, Mike Ditka was brutalized by some when he got here and that worked out pretty well.

Thing is, if Angelo ordered Smith and Grimm to run the wishbone, they'd probably ask on what series he wants it, while Saban would not have approached the job in quite that fashion.

But you have to ask yourself why Grimm is considered and Mike Singletary can't sniff an interview with the Bears.

Is it because Angelo didn't want Singletary around? Is it because Singletary is smarter, knows more about football, is more popular and a brilliant speaker?

Simply put, Chicago would demand Singletary's hiring if ever got an interview, and Angelo would be pushed into the background again.

So it's easier for the Bears to say they can't interview Singletary because he doesn't have experience as a head coach or coordinator.

Only problem is, neither does Russ Grimm.

The minority groups will have a field day if Angelo hires Grimm over Lovie Smith.

I can't see this guy getting the job over Lovie. I mean, on ESPN he sounded like he was begging for the job, with him being quoted as saying he required neither a lot of money nor a lot of power, just an opportunity. I'm sorry, but I'd rather have my head coaching candidate be so sure of himself that he wants the keys to the kingdom but accepts less when offered.Cheers

If you guys had heard Joe Gibbs' first press conference when he was hired in 1981 out of obscurity on the San Diego staff, you'd have never expected you were looking at a future legendary HOF coach. I don't know if Russ Grimm is going to be the same, and he may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer or even be a good coach, but to judge a man's ability based on solely his answers at one press confrence is pretty ludicrious, IMHO.

Yeah, what he said. Back off of Russ or I'll get big Joe Jacoby and his club hand to come deal with all of you :boxing:

washingtonpost.com Redskins Set to Add Zampese To Staff By Nunyo DemasioWashington Post Staff WriterTuesday, January 13, 2004; Page D01 Renowned offensive guru Ernie Zampese turned down regular offers to join the Washington Redskins during Joe Gibbs's first tenure with the team from 1981 to 1992. But Zampese -- who was part of the famous Air Coryell offense in San Diego on a staff that included Gibbs -- will be reunited with the three-time Super Bowl-winning coach, according to two NFL sources.Although the 67-year-old Zampese's role hasn't been defined, he is expected to assist with the play calling, said one NFL source. Gibbs has not yet made it clear if he will hire an offensive coordinator or if he will assume those duties. The Redskins declined to comment. For two decades, Zampese molded offensive juggernauts -- mostly as an offensive coordinator -- with the San Diego Chargers (1979-86), Los Angeles Rams (1987-93), Dallas Cowboys (1994-97) and New England Patriots (1998-99). He returned to the Rams, now in St. Louis, as a consultant in 2002 but had a stroke that September.During his NFL career, Zampese declined several offers to become a head coach, partly because of his self-effacing personality. Gibbs tried to lure Zampese to the Redskins during his run of three Super Bowl titles. But Zampese resisted largely because he wanted to stay close to his family on the West Coast."I think he's very excited. He's been out [of the game] for a year or so," said his son, Ken Zampese, the Cincinnati Bengals' quarterbacks coach. "Joe had been trying to hire him for a long time the last time he was with the Redskins. But he never wanted to leave California because of his children."Ernie Zampese, who did not return messages, was part of Don Coryell's storied San Diego Chargers staff. Gibbs was the co-offensive coordinator, Zampese coached wide receivers and Jim Hanifan coached the offensive line.Zampese has been retired for over a year. His last NFL stint came under Rams Coach Mike Martz, who previously was a Redskins assistant under Norv Turner, a Zampese disciple. Zampese was an offensive consultant to Martz and likely will take a similar role with Gibbs. Zampese took the Rams' job largely for an opportunity to work with his son, Ernie, a wide receiver and passing game coach in St. Louis."Gibbs will probably call the plays while Zampese is like a consultant," said former Redskins offensive lineman Mark May. "These guys that he's bringing from the past know the system like the Bible. With Zampese, Joe will out-formation to death anyone."Including Zampese, Gibbs has a staff of seven: defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, running backs coach Don Breaux, assistant head coach and offensive line coach Joe Bugel, quarterbacks coach Jack Burns, offensive quality control assistant Coy Gibbs and likely tight ends coach Rennie Simmons. The Redskins haven't announced the signing of Simmons, the offensive line coach of the Atlanta Falcons. If Simmons isn't a tight end coach, he is expected to coach the offensive line. According to two sources -- including one outside the Redskins organization -- former cornerback Darrell Green likely will join Gibbs's staff in some capacity. The only positions that Gibbs hasn't filled on offense are wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator. (The name of former Redskins wideout Charley Taylor has been bandied about for the former.) Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach Russ Grimm has been linked to the coordinator position, yet not only is he highly regarded by Steelers Coach Bill Cowher, but he also interviewed yesterday for the Chicago Bears' head coaching vacancy. Grimm and Rams defensive coordinator Lovie Smith reportedly are the finalists for the job. After two seasons with Zampese, Gibbs left the Chargers to become head coach of the Redskins in 1981. Two years later, Coryell named Zampese co-offensive coordinator for the Chargers. The two oversaw one of the most high-powered offenses in league history. Quarterback Dan Fouts surpassed 3,000 passing yards three times when throwing to Pro Bowlers Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner, Wes Chandler and John Jefferson.Fouts in San Diego, Jim Everett in Los Angeles and Troy Aikman in Dallas all had better statistics under Zampese than any other coach. Zampese is known for speeding things up for quarterbacks, with quicker drop steps and releases -- areas that should challenge Redskins third-year quarterback Patrick Ramsey."He was at the grass-roots of this offense," Martz said after hiring Zampese. "He helped create it. How awesome is that to be able to utilize his knowledge?"Gibbs wasn't always sold on Zampese's offensive acumen. When Coryell named Zampese the Chargers' wideout coach in 1979, Gibbs questioned the hiring.Gibbs, Hanifan and Zampese had been assistants for Coryell when he revolutionized the passing game as a San Diego State coach. But as a defensive backs coach at San Diego State for six seasons -- under then-defensive coordinator John Madden -- Zampese was known for developing NFL-caliber cornerbacks. However, Gibbs quickly realized that Zampese's mind-set as a defensive coach helped his offensive wizardry."Ernie very well may be the top offensive mind in the game," Madden once told the Boston Globe. "Some guys can argue that. But if you had a contest, I'd put him in there."© 2004 The Washington Post Company

This Bear's organization is a joke. This is how things are done in Chicago. As long as the fans continue to pour out in droves to these games the owners can give a rat's can about a winning team. Toss in a few stars here and there to make the media guide look pretty and that about sums it up with these players. This team has been doing a slow burn since the 86 season. Since then it has been a mixture of bad number one picks, lousy public relations, lying to the fans, overrated players receiving unbelievable contract extensions w fat signing bonus's, more lousy number one picks, Gestapo style stadium renovations, home games at a big ten stadium, releasing solid players and losing to the hated Packers over and freaking over. Everyone and their uncle in this town knows the Bears are tighter than the Olson twins when it comes to spending money except the fools that line up and have lined up to pay the fat bucks for those PSLs.As long as the McCaskey brain trust is in there it will be smoking mirrors and shots in the dark. This organization cannot even get it right when it comes to evaluating talent on the offensive side of the ball. Recent number one picks have turned into busts! I will give them the benefit of the doubt on Grossman and Haynes for now but the names of Salaam, Ennis, Rick Mirer (not a number one pick but was traded to the Bears for a number one pick), Cade McKnown and Marco Colombo all bring back putrid memories of wasted picks and gross miss-calculations. I am willing to bet dimes to dollars that Colombo will not even play another down until 2005 if he is not lost to a career threatening injury. If one takes the time to look at the talent that was passed over in all of these drafts it is just incredible! Then comes the retaining of John Schoop and his HS playbook! Perfect fit for this bumbling organization! And who can forget the Dave McGinnis circus? **** Jauron takes over here and him and Jerry "the King" Angelo cannot even stay on the same page. The whole reason why the Bears brought in a GM again is to stabilize the front office but it is just more "pie in the sky" BS!!!They fire Jauron and the next thing you know Angelo and that political stooge Ted Phillips (team President- ewww fancy title) award themselves contract extensions. Great jobs yield raises and I can see that Tantalizing Ted and Jerry "the King" have done a great job. The former built the spaceship and the later was lucky that his 2003 draft looked good on the field. Never mind focusing in on the negatives. After all, ole Virginia McCaskey is just too busy drinking Pink Ladies and Mike McCaskey cannot focus on the lousy team records while he is doing his best impressions of Scrooge McDuck! Then comes the Nick Saban circus! This was the ace up Jerry "the King" Angelo's sleeve but by the time the clock ticked January 10th that ace was just a naked joker and now the truth is once again painfully obvious. Another year and another mess in the land of the once proud football city.So here come the bridesmaids! College coaches too smart to fall for the old Chicago dirty political lies are dropping out of the HC "derby" faster then the mercury drops in January. Russ Grimm comes to town and drools all over the chance at a HC position to "pad" his resume. Can one blame him? Lovie Smith is next but that is what the Bears need- a defensive minded coach to raise the Phoenix from the ashes of the worst offense in the 2003 NFL season. Makes sense to me. Gee Lovie- wasn't that your defense that was shredded by the "Cats" in the past two RAM games? Yes the Detroit and Carolina cats respectfully! No mention of Charlie Weis or Mike Heimerdinger! Two of the more successful offensive minded coaches in the league! Mike Heimerdinger even fits the profile of the "local connection" that "the King" lied about as being one of the factors that would help escalate a candidate for the job.Angelo was ready to break the bank for his buddy Nick but now he is looking for the blue light special. Gee- I wonder if this means that the Bears are willing to finally make the right spending decisions on much needed free agents? Repairs to that shoddy OL (Blake Brockermeyer, Orlando Pace or Walter Jones) or maybe even a sack specialist like Jevon Kearse seeing how the team could not afford to keep Rosie Colvin? Dreams!!! Yes, they will do the same thing in free agency that they did last year and bring in the clipboard carrying has-beens or the overrated slugs. Remember, the Bears had no need for Jake Delhomme. Hell, they didn’t even consider the guy but kudos to Jake for making the right decision and going to a team with an NFL OL and a RB that can make some noise and a HC with a lot of heart. Jake is going to the NFC championship game while the Bears are hanging out on Rush street looking cool noshing on Gibson steaks and chasing north shore tail. This team has some loyal fans and it seems as if they are a sleeping giant or a dormant volcano but the Bears are no threat to do anything for the next 3 years- book it!. Sure the sun shines on a mule's fanny once in a while but a friend of mine who is a Packer fan put it best when he asked me when this lousy organization is going to at least be competitive enough to give the Packers some sort of game- any sort of game. A very long shot from that three-ring circus my friends!!!!!

Spoken like a true and appropriately disgruntled fan.Wish I had something to cheer you up but actually I have some more fuel for your fire. John Clayton was on ESPN Radio this morning and discussed the Bears situation at length.Turns out that while the money was OK in the Saban hunt, it never took a serious turn because Angelo was refusing to grant Saban final say in either the assistant coaching staff OR the final 53 man roster. Clayton said a coach like Saban can make his own terms and that ended the deal right there.Apparently Clayton went on to say that nearly EVERY coach in the NFL has control over the final 53 man roster, and to not concede that is unreasonable if you expect to attract the best coaching prospects or an established coach. That's why Russ Grimm appears to be a real candidate, because he's one of the few guys around that would be amicable to those terms.Way to go Jerry, nice to see you pulling out all the stops to bring in the right guy! :)Cheers

Russ Grimm?????? He's an o-line coach!!!! He has no idea how to be a head coach and has not even been a coordinator. This is a joke with Bears fans being the butt of it!!!!

If the Bills hire Murlarky, Grimm will be in line to get the O-Coordinators job.
I just listened to Grimm being interviewed by the media. Honestly, he didn't have much media savvy. When asked what type of offense he would have he replied "We will run and we will pass. Seriousely, we will most likely do both those things." (Paraphrased)You gotta be kidding me.

He sounded very confused. He also said "I don't know what to say, I've never been in this position before. I'll just have to tell you guys what I think". :wall:

I mean, you could hear him breathing into the mic. Horrible.
Don't know much about Grimm but one thing going against him is that he called the McCaskeys McCLasakey's. Ouch, not good. Other than that, its hard for me to make a judgement call just yet. Ditka wasn't a coordinator when the Bears got him, and he worked out well. I think, however, 'd feel better, at least initially, if the decide to go with Lovie. If they decide to go with Grimm, I can read the headlines in the paper already: "Just Grimm and BEAR it!".

Lightning doesn't strike twice in the same spot...GB Bears fans grasping onto Grimm being Ditka reincarnate ;) Cheers

Jason,Yes more fuel for the fire. This is nothing shocking (although it is news to me) because this organization is all about upper management first, the city second, the team third and the fans last. This organization just bends over backwards to keep the old guard going. No way they give up power on any level. Isn't that a definition of a tyrant?

Updated for the hiring of Mike Mularkey as Head Coach in Buffalo, and the implications that will have on the Bills and Steelers assistant coaching scenarios.

Atlanta Falcons -- After a wide open search, that briefly included LSU head coach Nick Saban, the Falcons have found their man, hiring Jim Mora (the son) as the next Falcons head coach. Mora is bringing Greg Knapp (SF's OC) along to serve in the same capacity with the Falcons.
Buffalo Bills -- The Bills have named Mike Mularkey as Head Coach. concluding a thorough process that included seven official candidates. Mularkey is expected to retain **** LeBeau as Defensive Coordinator while possibly bringing on board one of his offensive assistants from Pittsburgh as his OC.

Minnesota Vikings Defensive Coordinator -- Ted Cottrell has accepted Mike Tice's offer to replace George O'Leary as the Vikes Defensive Coordinator.
Buffalo Bills Offensive and Defensive Coordinator -- The Bills new head coach, Mike Mularkey, is expected to name one of his assistant coaches from the Pit offensive staff, either Tom Clements (QBs) or Ken Whisenhunt (TEs), as his new offensive coordinator. And **** LeBeau, the former Pittsburgh DC and inventor of the zone blitz, is the favorite to remain in Buffalo and assume the role of Defensive Coordinator.
Pittsburgh Steelers Offensive and Defensive Coordinator -- The Steelers coaching staff is looks ready for a massive overhaul as Cowher must now replace both of his coordinators. After firing DC Tim Lewis, OC Mike Mularkey has accepted the job as the Bills head coach. Creating further uncertainty, it's widely expected that Mularkey will bring either Pit's Tom Clements (QBs) or Ken Whisenhunt (TEs) along as his OC. Cowher had plans to interview several outside candidates for the role of defensive coordinator, and Greg Blache, who will interview today, may be the favorite by default. **** LeBeau may stay in Buffalo while Teddy Cottrell has accepted an offer from the Vikings.
Cleveland Browns Offensive Coordinator -- As expected, Terry Robiskie has has been promoted to offensive coordinator after serving as receivers coach this year. Robiskie has many years of experience, serving in the OC capacity in Oakland under Art Shell and also serving as a coach/interim head coach in Washington during the Norv Turner era.
Washington Redskins Offensive and Defensive Coordinators -- Joe Gibbs wasted little time in forming an impressive staff, adding standout defensive mind Gregg Williams as the defensive coordinator, following his ouster from the HC job in Buffalo. Williams is reportedly prepared to bring aboard a group of his assistant coaches from Buffalo, including adding Buffalo DC Jerry Gray as the defensive backs coach. The Skins have also named Joe Bugel assistant head coach and offensive line coach, and have brough Ernie Zampese, a fellow Don Coryell disciple like Gibbs, in an offensive coach.
San Diego Chargers Defensive Coordinator -- No word yet on who will replace Dale Lindsay as the Chargers defensive coordinator. Ted Cottrell was the only known candidate, but has accepted a job as the Vikings DC.
Kansas City Chiefs Defensive Coordinator -- **** Vermeil finally figured out what the rest of the world already knew, Greg Robinson has no business being the defensive coordinator of a championship caliber NFL team. Robinson resigned today, after uber loyal **** Vermeil told him that it would be best for the team.Front Office Vacancies

Miami Dolphins GM -- Correcting previous reports, Dan Marino was hired as VP of Football Operations, and in house Player Personnel Director Rick Spielman was named GM today, beating out the six other candidates who had interviewed in the last few weeks. Marino will maintain final say in personnel matters but Spielman will be the main guy in terms of shaping the roster.

Also it looks like the new bills O coordinator will be one of two guys:Steelers tight ends coach Ken Whisenhunt or quarterbacks coach Tom Clements. My money is on the latter

The greatest thing that I have noticed about Joe Gibbs is how he surrounds himself with great people. He's not the egotistical joke that Spurrier was. Gibbs may take awhile to get used to the NFL again but his learning curve should be shorter with all that he has surround himself with. I expect him to have some success this year.

The Bills have officially hired Mularky and looks pretty good that Lebeau will replace Gray as Defensive Coordinator.
Is the Steeler offense really something we want to copy. Geez. Not sure I'm real happy with this hire. :(

I have mixed feelings but I am optimistic by nature. Mularky seems like a breath of fresh air in demeanor compared to our last few coaches.

You guys need to ignore this last season. Look at the 2 years before that. Not to mention he did that with Kordell one year and a carousel the next. I want to blame the offense this year on the running game Zereoue sucks and the Bus is too old.

Former Green Bay Packers general manager Ron Wolf visited the Cleveland Browns' training facility Thursday to speak with officials for the team, which is looking to upgrade its personnel staff.

Wolf, 65, who has been retired since 2000, said from his Maryland home that nothing was decided. He declined to detail his talks with the Browns, referring questions to the team.

Team officials could not be reached for comment Thursday night. Messages were left at the office and home of spokesmen for the team.

Coach Butch Davis, whose club went 5-11, said after the season ended that he wanted to make staff ``enhancements'' aimed at improving player evaluations.

What the heck is Ron Wolf thinking? You aren't supposed to COME here to Cleveland to accomplish anything. You are supposed to LEAVE our town like Art Modell or Bill Belichick and then win super bowls. This town is cursed! He'll just ruin his legacy here.

**** Lebeau is rumored to be more interested in returning to Pittsburgh than staying in buffalo. If that is the case some people rumored to being considered for Bills DC are Dave Mcginnis, **** Jauron( also rumored to be Kurt Schottemheimers replacement in Detroit), and Greg Blache. It seems as though Jerry Gray has no interest in returning as DCafter being considered for HC.

Pendergast tapped as defensive coordinator--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Associated PressTEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona Cardinals coach Dennis Green hired five more assistants Thursday, including defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast. The others are: Frank Bush (linebackers); Robert Ford (wide receivers); Deek Pollard (defensive line) and Bob Wylie (offensive line)."We've completed our defensive staff, and we're excited about the group's chemistry," Green said. "Clancy Pendergast has the potential to be an outstanding defensive coordinator."Pendergast coached at Mississippi State, Southern California, Oklahoma and Alabama-Birmingham before he was hired by the Houston Oilers in 1995.He moved to Dallas the next season, coaching the Cowboys' linebackers, nickel defense and secondary until 2002. He moved to the Cleveland Browns last season as linebackers coach.Bush joined the Cardinals after nine years with the Denver Broncos.Ford is a 13-year veteran as an NFL assistant, having worked at Dallas (1991-97) and Miami (1998-2003), and Pollard has been a coach for 39 years, including 12 in the NFL and 16 at the college level.Wylie also has 13 years of NFL coaching on his resume, including stints with Chicago, Cincinnati, Tampa Bay and the New York Jets

So it's down to the Raiders as a vacancy for Head coach. Methinks ol' Al has his eye on either Charlie Weis or Romeo Crennel. Being in the playoffs, neither guy could really interview for a HC vacancy, and Al probably knew that. I doubt that any of the guys he's interviewed has really blown his jumpsuit off, otherwise they'd have been hired by now.

From the Miami HeraldThe Dolphins are expected to consider Hue Jackson as a possible quarterbacks coach, an NFL source said. Jackson, offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins this season, was fired this week by new coach Joe Gibbs. Miami also is expected to interview at least one other candidate.

**** Lebeau is rumored to be more interested in returning to Pittsburgh than staying in buffalo.
Steelers, Cowher win battle against Bills to rehire LeBeau
It appears Cowher has won the tug of war with Buffalo to hire **** LeBeau as his defensive coordinator as soon as today. LeBeau, who was defensive coordinator of the Steelers in the 1990s when he was an assistant coach under Cowher for five years, was the subject of intense salesmanship by the Steelers and new Bills coach Mike Mularkey, Cowher's former offensive coordinator. The Bills have started looking elsewhere for a defensive coordinator and the two other candidates for the Steelers' job have turned to other avenues.

In what could be a huge move for Cleveland, local sports talk radio WKNR is reporting that former Packers GM Ron Wolf has officially joined the Browns front office as a consultant. He will help the Browns with their upcoming draft and other personnel moves.edit: actually, I want to hear them say it again, just in case my ears were playing tricks on me. Listening now. :)
