Goodell..Goodell and Goodell...So the question then becomes, what was the downfall? Where did it start to go wrong?
I'm going to put your head through a wall, guy.All I know is that after Garry Marshall died Donald Trump became the GOP nominee.
Yep. You could tell on MNF the last 3-4 years where there were lots of empty seats in great football towns like Pittsburgh.I've been saying this for a while, but there's only one way the NFL goes from here, and it ain't getting more fans. We have seen "peak football" IMO.
Are there any numbers out there to support this?- fantasy football is fading
I think he has a lot to do with it for me anyway. With all the commercials, penalties and rule changes the fun has been sucked out. I've been watching football for 40 years and now it seems I don't know what a catch or a penalty looks like. Instead of cheering when my team scores I have to wait to make sure there is no flag and then wait for a review to see if the process was completed. There are also too many bad teams and a severe lack of qb talent and most of these teams seem to get put on Thursday or Monday night games.Goodell..Goodell and Goodell...
Some of that could cause some rating decline... but also believe with all the streaming ways available the way ratings are scored were bound to go down... I don't think overall viewership is down as much as this article states.. just think the old rating system needs to be adjusted.A combination of many factors are involved in this.
While fantasy football is as popular as it's ever been, I suspect that a lot of people who play are casual fans at best who don't really watch games and just want to check their FF scores on Tuesday morning to see if they won or lost.
Over-saturation. Three prime time games a week is too much. The Thursday night games aren't going anywhere, but they generally suck.
Too many commercials + a current society of everyone wanting everything now. In this day and age where any and everything is a click away, many probably shut games off when there are too many commercials early on and never make it back.
The current election cycle. Should be interesting to see if the ratings get any better once the election is over.
That could very well be true. I never stream football - I always watch on TV - so I didn't give that a lot of consideration, but you might be right. Some of that could cause some rating decline... but also believe with all the streaming ways available the way ratings are scored were bound to go down... Need more Broncos. That could very well be true. I never stream football - I always watch on TV - so I didn't give that a lot of consideration, but you might be right.
Also, the NFL is not really a league that needs stars to attract viewers - that is more the NBA's thing - but I can't help but wonder if the first month having no Peyton Manning or Tom Brady hurt. Having the Bears on two prime time games in a week probably didn't help either.
I quit three dynasty leagues in the past year. Are there any numbers out there to support this?
That guy sounds like a pretty smart feller, imo.As a fellow FBG posted on facebook...did they take into account "cord-cutters" and the like?
Few posters in that other thread who's feelings seem very hurtGet rid of the celebration penalty. Fans loved the Fun Bunch, the New York Sack Exchange, the high fives, and the dancing. These are grown men, no one is having their feelings hurt because of an end zone dance.
Celebration penalties, instsnt replay, stoppages, 3 night games a week, social media, Netflix, dvr, soccer...So the question then becomes, what was the downfall? Where did it start to go wrong?
The handling and backlash from Ray Rice.So the question then becomes, what was the downfall? Where did it start to go wrong?
Don't forget obamaCelebration penalties, instsnt replay, stoppages, 3 night games a week, social media, Netflix, dvr, soccer...
Same. All done with FF.I quit three dynasty leagues in the past year.
Daily has put a dent in season long. And then Daily messed up last year in several ways.Same. All done with FF.
Game length/commercial breaks. Legislating out anything/anyone that was interesting. Oversaturating the market so that nothing's an 'event.'So the question then becomes, what was the downfall? Where did it start to go wrong?
He's pretty much a tool. That guy sounds like a pretty smart feller, imo.
There are a lot of things. Largely, I think the game has been a victim of it's own success, and that doesn't mesh well with today's viewer. So the question then becomes, what was the downfall? Where did it start to go wrong?
FF may not be in decline but now it is a different type of player. The older hardcore FF players would watch from noon on Sunday until the end on Sunday and the Monday games. The newer players are your sisters, people you work with, younger players like my daughters who don`t watch football but will check their phones for scores on Sundays while they are doing something else.A combination of many factors are involved in this.

Unlike them ungrateful football and basketball millionaires, baseball millionaires appreciate the opportunity provided to them by 'Murica.Giants. I have no problem supporting the MLB.
A bunch of foreigners who came here to steal American jobs.Giants. I have no problem supporting the MLB.
I think pro wrestling is more your thing.Major rule changes needed imo. Open things up, let the kids play, let them wear crazy uniforms, stylish stuff, change it up every week, jersey sponsors, less defense, open it up, more scoring, less tackling, touchdowns worth 10 points + 2, field goals 5, bigger hits, more PEDs, make it louder, halftime shows, dancers, in your face, double reverse super slow-mo replays running all the time, different lines all over the screen, more info, more graphics, "analysis", more talking more noise.
This, too. Football days used to be something special that I'd look forward to. Now, it feels like there is an NFL game on too many days, taking away the specialness of it. That, coupled with the fact that I can't even watch many games as a cord cutter, makes me really lose interest.Over-saturation. Three prime time games a week is too much. The Thursday night games aren't going anywhere, but they generally suck.
Started going to Bears games in the early 80s. It was full of drunken #######s then too.Anyone think the culture AT the stadium has changed? When I was younger I went with my family to games occasionally. We always had fun. As a kid, I don't remember a "rude" fan. I've taken my kids to stadiums for a Hockey, Baseball and Football game and I'm appalled by the things I hear. I don't want to drop that type of coin to subject my family to that stuff.

Honestly I haven't watched the last couple of weekends because I didn't want to hear about the anthem political stuff so I skipped kickoff and then never got back to watch the rest of the games. First time in a while I haven't watched at all. I don't want to hear politics in my NFL.I seriously doubt that the anthem thing has caused viewership to drop 11%.
