NFL viewership off 11% YOY (1 Viewer)

I'm trying this awesome college product everyone is raving about.  I've got one game on mid Saturday afternoon.  NCState 49, Furman 16.  Maybe I'm not just grasping the tradition and pageantry of this matchup, but I think I'd be watching the Rams/49ers if they were on right now.
Now imagine if that was the featured game of the week.

So I flipped on the DAL/DEN game some time last night and they're doing the side by side commercials during the game now???   As if the NFL needs more commercials.

The NFL has two things going for it over college. The best players + closer matchups on average. Outside of gamblers, who really wants to watch these 30 point blowouts?

I have found checking scores and updates on my phone more interesting than the games itself.

Although Fantasy helped more people become more interested it also is killing the actual viewing as it is more fun to watch the box scores and stats pile up on your phone. The people my daughters age all play FF but hardly ever watch the actual games.

NBC's Packers-Falcons got 12.6 overnight rating. -8% from Pack-Vikes last year Week 2. Both games were stadium debuts and up against Emmys

I agree that your typical NFL game on TV has lots of room for improvement, but it's still better than most sports and most stuff on TV in general.

But yeah, I agree that RZ rules.
Oh dear lord....hell no.

Just pathetic.

Yes.  Are you talking about TV viewing, stadium seating, or both.
Both. If the NFL wants viewers, in or out of a stadium, moving teams to LA was a down right idiotic decision. It was a comical proposition at the beginning and the fact you can't even fill a 30,000 seat stadium with $6 dollar tickets is just one example. Hope the Cali people continue having fun throwing tax money away.

Was forced to watch Seattle/San Francisco.  Why are ratings down?  Games like that.  Just horrendous viewing experience.  Terrible football.  I don't blame people who have moved on from watching garbage football.

That was a barn burner compared to Carolina/Buffalo.

I wasn't trying to be a jerk asking you to unpack your initial comments.  I didn't know where you were going.  I totally agree that the NFL made a big mistake moving 2 teams to LA.   LA does not have the NFL fan base to support 2 teams.  Stadium ticket sales are going to struggle.  The team that wins a lot first will get some fans.  I have no idea if that will ever be enough to fill a stadium but it will be interesting to watch.

The product itself is the main reason that TV viewership is down.  Games are slow and boring very often.

The Rams are actually sort of a fun team to watch this year so far, incredibly. And the Chargers have always had a good offense. Out of curiosity what would a ticket off an exchange or online or on the street cost to get in for a decent seat out of curiosity?

I'm sure it wasn't a great seat, but Rams tickets for week 1 were selling for $6 on the secondary market.

I hope they go 1-15 in the funnest way possible.

Is this about the fast train between L.A. and S.F. boondoggle?

ETA: The capacity of the L.A. Coliseum is over 93K. You seem to be confusing the Rams and the Chargers.

The fan base in LA is still very strong for the Raiders.  I don't know why anyone thought moving a divisional rival here was a good idea.  The Chargers "home" game vs the Raiders will be 80% Raiders fans.

I watch less and less NFL or college football nowadays.  I still watch my home town team if I'm around that day and it's playing.  But I rarely watch any other games.  Not interested in Philly/Washington or Pitt/Baltimore.  Honestly I don't even watch much of the playoffs.

I was just going to post this.   It'll be more like 95% though.    And when the Raiders move to Vegas, their LA fan base will make a weekend out of it.   I really can't see the Chargers ever developing a fanbase there.   Old Charger fans are still bashing the Charger FB page in massive numbers.

The Rams have a chance.  I can't find any attendance numbers for 2017 though. Still a lot of old Rams fans.

No, it is the fact that California is going to have to support 2 NFL teams that can't support themselves due to revenue.

I don't care what the capacity of the LA coliseum is. The Rams and Chargers both will have pitiful game attendances.

One pitiful attendance + another pitiful attendance =~ one normal attendance?

Was in LA this weekend, super thrilled to get my choice of Rams/Skins or Chargers/Miami in the afternoon.

but hey it is better than NC st versus Furman.

Oh it's going to be way more than 80%. Believe that.

The NFL has a major problem and they are too arrogant to see it.

1.  Their product sucks, end of story.  It's boring as a fan attending games.

2.  Commercials, stupid penalties and long stoppages kill the game.  End of story.  They need to revamp all 3 of those things.

When it comes to commercials, it's widely known that most stoppages are for commercials.  Each team gets 3 timeouts a half.  That's fine.  A break at end of quarter, fine.  But we are past the point in society where having a commercial break is acceptable.  Consumers are doing everything they can to get around commercials.  The NFL, granted, has its hands tied because its wealth is a direct benefit from the massive tv package.

But kids won't put up with this.  My son is 8. I couldn't dream of him sitting down to watch a whole game with me.  I don't know any of his friends that do either.

The IPad/streaming generation, especially those kids that have had it from birth, are going to hate the NFL.  It's WAY too old school.

Now I'm not saying kids don't enjoy the NFL, but they don't enjoy it enough to do what we did as young kids, sit in front of the tv glued to their TV sets.

Its over for the NFL as the bigtime sport.

:goodposting:

Combine the head injuries issue and the seeming inability for someone somewhere to make a safer helmet, and I honestly doubt my future children walk the path I did growing up and enjoy the NFL. And I hate to say it, but I don't think I'll let my kids go out for football if they ask. Most any other sport, sure. But not football.

It's a whole new world our kids are going to see than the one we saw growing up.

Emmy ratings were at an all time low as well.  Maybe people are just not watching as much TV.

With the bad starts to the Cardinals season, I think there will be similar number this week when Dallas goes to Arizona.

I know several season ticket-holders who always sell their tickets because they can gouge Cowboy fans.

This is a relatively interesting issue for me because, personally, I do so much fantasy football and game betting that I'm glued to every game and every play.  Oh, the Jags are losing to the Titans by 27? Well, Marqise Lee was my long shot play with week in a couple of leagues so I'm glued hoping for that garbage time bomb.  Also, wistfully hoping that Josh McCown doesn't get some garbage time score because I have the Raiders defense.  Lastly, come on Niners, bleed this out because I have you and the points!

Gotta admit though if it weren't for 1) the awesomeness of the red zone channel; 2) gambling; and 3) my wife genuinely seeming to enjoy cooking on sundays during football I'm not so sure I'd be so interested.  The games themselves really are pretty bad right now.  Really, really bad 0-line play.

Oddly enough, you just stated the exact reason I gave up FF. Got tired of sitting through crappy games for that very reason. My viewership has dropped real close to nil at this point. Can't say I miss it much. When I do try to watch, 17 commercials followed up by a few replay delays and I'm out.

This is my first year I'm not glued to my tv every Sunday because my son is in flag football and fall baseball and his schedule on Sundays is packed. I'm usually out most of the day and don't miss it at all. Still check my fantasy scores on my phone will doing something I find much more fun than laying on couch for 8 hours trying to stay awake during horrible games.

I can't stand watching just one set game with all the commercials.  For the stand alone games (i.e. Thursday, Sunday and Monday nights) I always DVR them, ignore my phone, and start watching like 90 minutes into the game and fast forward even between plays.

I couldn't tell you the last time I watched Thur night game. Those are typically beyond horrible. As for MNF, maybe if it is a team I root for. Then I might watch a half if I'm bored. Admittedly, the older I get, the busier I get. The busier I get, the less I care to waste a Sunday afternoon watching football. A cold or rainy day is about the only chance of it happening anymore.

The Thursday night games are an abomination. Not only do players have less time to rest and prepare but every team has to play one. That means teams like the jets, bills, jags, browns, etc all get prime time games. And how do you schedule those games? Make them play against good teams leading to definite blow outs or against each other?

Obviously the solution is to have 2 Thursday night games every week. ;)

I was pretty much with you until this.

The NBA just had it's dream Finals scenario and it's ratings finally approached an average regular season primetime game. That is a ####load of ground to make up.

Yes. I don't think people really understand how big the gap is.
