NHL Season Thread: TB wins and Kucherov loves beer (1 Viewer)

@FriedgeHNIC: A sign the off-season is really revving up as the final four chase the Stanley Cup: Carolina has given Dougie Hamilton permission to talk to other NHL teams. Opens potential for a sign-and-trade.
let's go

Non- Stanley Cup playoff random thought.

Went down a Link Gaetz rabbit-hole on YouTube this morning for some reason, and the next time the topic of all-time sports records that will never be broken comes up, I'm going with NHL career penalty minutes.

Tiger Williams had 3,971 PIMs.  Of the top 250 players all-time, there are just 2 active players.  Chara, at #56 with 2,000 PIMs, and Joe Thornton at 1,262.

With the way the game is played today, no one will ever come close to surpassing Tiger.  He was an animal.
10 points and 116 PIM :lmao:  in 17 playoff games in Vancouver's 1981-82 run to the Stanley Cup Final.  Brought a respectable amount of offense.

Probably most remarkable stat from Tiger Williams is he played just shy of 1000 games (962) playing that style.  Shudder to think how many concussions he might have played through.

Dennis Bonvie had 4,493 penalty minutes in 871 games in the AHL, averaging over 5 PIMs per game over his career.  Crazy.

Got to watch Brian McGrattan the year he set the single-season PIM record in the AHL in 2004-2005...551 PIMs in 71 games.

Not that I condone the fighting, but the ol' barn would explode everytime he dropped the mitts that season.  Was nuts.

Yeah noticed that there are 7 guys in the NHL with 2000+ PIM who averaged over 4 per game.  (Nilan actually has the highest average PIM in that group.)

Was the TB crowd at max capacity for Game 1 yesterday?

Could have sworn I heard a few fans sneeze throughout the broadcast.

Thursday night @ the Coli is gonna be a madhouse.
Cheap seat Tickets for Game 6 went from $600 to $1200 after the Game 1 W.
how was the noise level for you tonight

So I managed to catch highlights of the game(don’t have cable, because pricing and packages are stupid), and I am baffled by how Point got called for that GI penalty, because he clearly got shoved into the goalie.

Big answer for the Lightning. Completely different team than game one. Goalie interference and no call for too many men feels like a fair wash. Refs miss things. It’s kind of a fast game.

The no look backhanded pass on Point’s goal was a thing of beauty. Kucherov is an artist. Also, My phone autocorrects “Kucherov” to “Ouch Eric.” :pokey:  Neat.

Much better - didn't hear any fans sneezing last night.

Vasi made some huge saves early on + 2-3 posts and TB was off to the races.

And no doubt he was pushed into Varly - it was a bad call. But then TB scored on a 7 vs 5 to make up for it.

The Isles wanted and got a split in TB, now it's onto our house this Thursday. If the ugliness in this series continues to escalate it will benefit the Isles imo.

Worried about Pageau - if he misses time that is a huge hit to the Isles chances.

Bolts are way better on the road than at home. It’s over in 5 or 6.

The Lightning went 21-7-0 at home, 15-10-3 on the road in the regular season. However, looking at their playoff record, they’re 6-1 on the road, and 2-3 at home. I have to wonder how that switch got flipped.

It had zero effect on the play.
So too many men on the ice isn't a penalty? Rulebook is pretty clear on that, I thought.

99% of the time the penalty is called hundreds of times throughout the season it doesn't actually affect the play. Still a penalty when the offending team touches the puck, no?

Again, got no dog in this fight, just sad that the NHL can't get their own rulebook right when the games matter most.

The NHL has the worst officials of any sports league by a wide margin, and that’s considering the fact that an NBA ref got busted fixing games in recent memory. Their issue is that they’re just outright incompetent, consistency is only a word they use to describe their last meal, and there’s no repercussions for being bad at their jobs. But God help you if you work in the league and call them out, Gary Bettman won’t stand for that!

Probably the toughest game to ref given how fast a game it is in such tight a space…on skates, just staying out of the way is a mighty task. Frustrating how many rough calls/non-call there are but I’m not sure its ineptitude as much as it is just hard as #### to be right all the time.

That doesn’t explain their lack of consistency with the stuff they apparently are able to catch and call, especially when an infraction happens directly in front of them.

Every time I see the Ning winning I’m like #### these #######s and then I’m reminded by a brief camera shot that captain Maroon is on the team and I’m like eh I guess it would be ok if they won again. At this point it’s either going to be his second since leaving or Pietrangelo’s first since he was replaced by some dude who is like 5’5”. Either scenario cracks me up.

As I said previously, Montreal is very clearly at Vegas’ level, if not better.

NHL officiating is not easy, but how do four on-ice officials miss a guy slashing another guy in the face?  Unreal.  Even if one of the two refs miss it, one of the linesman can tell them and a penalty can still be assessed.
