No Kicker and Def leagues? (1 Viewer)

So what is the "pool's" general thoughts on replacing K's and D's with additional flex positions. This has been proposed in my long running shark keeper league as an possible rule change. I'm on the fence and as the commish might ultimately have the final say on this. Your thoughts could help me come down on a side. TIA!

My main redraft has never had team D's. Personally, I prefer IDP or no D. Team D's are kind of quirky, unpredictable, etc. K's are, too, but at least they can't put up 30 points out of nowhere.

This. Kickers are kinda meh, but team d is pretty goofy sometimes. We don't have team d in my main dyno - and no one has even really asked for it. And if they did, it would get shot down like an low flying elephant-sized goose.

Team D is silly, and is basically just a factor to add or remove randomness from your league. It's a little more nuanced if you're using yardage for points. My main league is attached to it, but I could take it or leave it week to week. I'd rather have team D than a kicker, if I had to keep one.

That said, I generally find IDP pretty silly, too, since most scoring systems are really all about opportunity and which MLB is behind a bad DL, or which team has crappy CBs so the FS racks up 120 tackles. But I still like playing it, because it's another chunk of data to crunch and figure out.

Removing kickers/def is fine, but you certainly don't need to 'replace' them with other positions. Add flex if you want, remove K, DEF if you want but they don't have anything to do with each other.

Interesting. Seems like more and more leagues are moving this way. I want to like it but the traditionalist in me is having a hard time letting them go......

I think Team D is a lot better if first, you make separate Team Defense and Team Kick Return units. Not only are they pretty different, but a good defense even tends to reduce kick return yards. So it really makes little sense to combine them together, reducing the gap between good ones and bad ones more than not.

Then have Team D be based more off of points and yards given up than off of takeaways or sacks.

Agree that they are separate decisions. Funny how they get mixed up.

I would be against removing kickers or defenses. Our kicking points are modest and, yes, there is some randomness in the position. But that is true about much of the game, especially in head to head format. Top defenses can be a difference maker. Part of a draft strategy might me when to reach for good one. Why remove a dimension from the game?

Ahhh, the dream... a fantasy league without the added luck that comes with kickers and defense. I have been unsuccesful in removing them in the league I commish. It's like trying to take a baby blanket from a 10 year old.

From talking with a few of the guys in my league it's looking like the majority of the league wants this. Anyone else play in this type of league?

I hate having kickers. If anything at least have TEAM kicking points, not a specific kicker. Really though I just prefer no kicker at all.

I am not a fan of IDP, or even really team defense. But I am much more ok with a team D than kickers.

But I agree with whoever said that they don't need to be replaced with another flex. I dont see why you would need to replace them.

I feel it's a must if you play in Devy leagues. One of my Devy leagues has no K and DEF, and two other ones have no K.

Exactly. A top D or a high scoring kicker provides a clear advantage, why in the world would you take that away?

Kickers are an essential part of the NFL and should be as such in fantasy.

Defense is easy to fix by adjusting what is scored. Defenses help a team win in the NFL by doing defensive stuff, so score those things such as punts, successful fourth down stops instead of other arbitrary things like yards given up and points against which are much more variable.

My preference would be to combine D/ST and K. Never heard of this and doubt any sites support it, but since the K is a special teamer, just lump them together. Draft the viking d, get Walsh. Done. Although this would probably make the random scoring wierdness even worse...
