I don't really care about the emoji per se, but the existence of this thread implies that we have some number of middle aged men hitting the report button because they got their feelings hurt by a digital smilie face. Perhaps the micro plastics are to blame.

Middle aged? Isn’t the average age of this board like 65? How’d we go from a generation that stormed the beaches of Normandy to handful of guys getting triggered because someone replied to their post with the “wrong” emoji

It’s pathetic

I could understand if this was a Club Penguin or Veggie Tales forum or something, but this turn of events is just extremely disappointing

Count me in the group that finds this ridiculous. I’ve been around forever. I’ve never reported anyone for anything. As has already been said, punishing the masses for the plaintive cries of the few is a sorry state of affairs. Just get rid of all the emojis if you’re seriously going to let these thin skinned people dictate what’s “right” around here. Because the big bad meany pants no good emoji abusers are just going to circumvent the “instant” version.

I’ve paid every year simply to support you, @Joe Bryant. I don’t use 90% of the amazing content y’all provide. Based on results, Maybe I should use more of it :sadbanana: :lmao: anyway, your site, your rules. Sad though.

I’m sorry @Joe Bryant but you are so wrong about this it isn’t even funny.

You have absolutely no grasp on your community here. You think you do.

But you don’t. You let the complainers control this board when your core group is begging you to let us be adults here. Because 98% of your base here is the core group that actually provides the love and support your community needs to thrive.

You are basically crapping on the same people that made this place in the first place. This happened at The Huddle and you are doing it here.

You are taking a stand because of a laugh emoji? That is sad, man.

And I’m sure you will ban me for this. And if so it’s a hill I’m willing to die on. And if this is it for me here, I love all you guys. Been a big part of my life for a lot of years. I’m in northern Wisconsin and there are a few here @gianmarco that know how to get a hold of me.

I will buy any of you a beer. And you can take that to the bank brochacho amigos……….

The debate styles of each MBTI personality:

INTP - Focuses on the logical variables.

Ex. They'll focus on the pros and cons while seeking perspectives from all parties involved for a logical resolution with the least conflict as possible.

INTJ - Searches for fallacies, while trying to make you doubt your validity.

Ex. “All right I've listened to everything you have to say, I just don't think that it's fair to put all this emotional weight on me and I already know what you're going to say but I just don't think it applies to this specific scenario. And before you say the same thing you said last time, yes I really do understand.”

ESTP - Focuses on the here and now. Impatient quick thinker. Dismissive.

Ex.

Person A: You know you can be a…

ESTP: A ****? I know

Person A: You're not even…

ESTP: Listening to you? I am, but this conversation is dragging on. Maybe I just think faster than you. Besides all you bring up is things from like 5 years ago. What does that have to do with today? Can we get this over with?

ENTP - Finds logical flaws, effortlessly debates, ultimate devil's advocate, makes you want to punch him.

Ex.

Person A: I try to be a good person, I don't see what's so hard for other people to do the same.

ENTP: What is good to you?

Person A: What do you mean? To be a half decent person.

ENTP: What does a half decent person look like?

Person A: You know what I mean! Why is this turning into an argument?

ENTP: How can you try to be something you can't even explain to me?

ESFP - dislikes conflict, will try to find a flexible solution for both parties, dislikes when people argue with variables they have no knowledge of, usually uses their enthusiasm to charm.

Ex.

*Disagreement with partner* “Can you stop beating around the bush? All the psychology crap is stressing me out. You know, Person A doesn't have to deal with this with her boyfriend! I'm gonna cool off.” *Walks away*

*Comes back*

ESFP: Okay If it will make you happy, I'll hear you out but *bursts with charming enthusiasm* but can we go out to eat afterwards? :D.

ESFJ - Flips perspectives, tries to find a way for multiple truths to exist, prioritizes Harmony.

Ex.

Person A: I can't have a decent argument with you.

ESFJ: Would you have an argument with someone who's being aggressive and raising their voice?

Person A: No

ESFJ: Then why would you ever expect me to argue with you? Because that's all that ends up happening with us.

ISFP - Follows personal values, does not like conflict.

Ex.

*Stays quiet to avoid conflict*

ISFJ - Sticks to the facts, prioritizes harmony, uses past variables to solve present-day problems.

Ex.

Kid A: I don't understand why dad won't let me use the car!

ISFJ: Baby, do you remember the last three times you borrowed the cars? I do, you crashed them all.

Kid A: It will be different this time.

ISFJ: Would you ever trust someone who, out of the 3 times you've used a vehicle, has crashed it? I know it could be different this time but you can't blame Dad for being hesitant. Now I baked some cookies, do you want some?
:-)

INFP - Prioritizes personal values, will argue possibilities, tries to show another viewpoint.

Ex.

Person A: Look all I said was that feminism is kind of outdated. You have to stop getting so emotional.

INFP: First of all, I don't HAVE to do anything. Second, I understand how you can feel that way about feminism. Things are different now and while we don't have to fight for the same things as 30 years ago, I feel like we need to continue to spread awareness because maybe everyone is not caught up with modern day rights. What about the women who don't have a voice?

Person A: Oh, I guess that's true, I didn't think about it that way. Btw, I didn't mean to tell you that you had to, I suppose there's another way I could have said that.

INFJ- prioritizes harmony, tries to seek a deeper understanding of another's perspective, solutions usually cater to everyone involved.

Ex.

Person A: Feminism is so outdated. Feminists are so selfish and defensive.

INFJ: Why do you think that?

Person A: Because honestly, it blocks the issues that men go through by focusing on issues women are barely struggling with. Almost overshadowing our existence.

INFJ: I can see that. But doesn't that invalidate what women are going through? Why not spread awareness of the issues that men go through? That way you don't have to invalidate feminism and generate animosity for your opinions. You'll get more people on board with your ideals that way, don't you think?

Person A: Yeah you're right. Damn, how are you so insightful?

ISTJ - Uses facts, gets straight to the point, usually keeps things neutral.

Ex.

Partner: We barely go out anymore.

ISTJ: We barely go out because you had to get that brand new car even though the old one was working just fine. If we go out we're going to be behind on bills unless you want to pick up overtime, I don't see how we're going to afford that.

ESTJ - sticks to the facts, mainly sticks to logical arguments, mind not easily swayed.

Ex.

ESTJ: “What do your feelings have to do with this? You were late 3 times, you get fired like everyone else.”

ISTP - Data, data, and more data. Usually always right at least according to their data.

Ex.

Person A: Stupid president is making it hard for us to get work.

ISTP: Actually the data shows the unemployment rate is significantly lower than it was 10 years ago. Furthermore, the president barely has any capacity to make it more difficult for you to find a job. I'd like to add that school loans are easier to get now more than……

Person A: OKAY I get it.

ENFJ - uses charm to get his/her way(think Oprah), prioritizes harmony, usually argues using philosophy in potentials.

ENFP - ethical devil's advocate, prioritizes personal values, usually tries to argue with in another person's boundaries.

Ex.

Person A: I don't know why people still believe in God.

ENFP: What if God lives within us? What if when they say that we are the children of God, that it's a guide for us children to grow up. The Bible could be a guide for us to turn into future God's. I mean, look how much humanity can already do. Things which we once thought only God could do. You know what they say “With great power, comes great responsibility”.

Person A: …….. my mind is blown.

ENTJ - uses cited and sourced data, easily able to see the flow of conversation, very good at foreseeing future implications and making contingency plans.

Joe gave his reason, and no one believes him?

But one guy claims to know the reason, and everyone runs with that? It's simply not possible that Joe was tired of seeing it himself? Frankly, that's just the kind of thing I assume gets under Joe's skin.

Is there a secret Discord somewhere, where a mod is spilling the beans on who is reporting who? There must be, because maaaaaan, do we get a lot of confident statements on what's going on behind the scenes, and I never see any proof. So pleasssssse, someone send me an invite. Otherwise, kind of feels like one guy wants to (cowardly) blame posters without actually naming names, without even knowing the context.

And a bunch of other people decide that's true, and Joe must be lying.

This is where I land when I read about this stuff or god forbid poke in on a competitor message board. I am young for the boards as I round 50. 50 year old, mostly men, acting like this. It is bizarre.

I’m right behind ya - though I cannot imagine the circumstance that would find me in the hinterlands, look me up when you’re in NYC.

That invitation goes out to anyone* here who enjoyed some of my 60K posts here. Wow…10 a day for almost 17 years seems worthy of a laughing emoji quick reaction. A LECR (pronounced licker), if you will.

I’m friends IRL with a few kind folks here, half my FF league is FBGs, but you can find me all over the internet posting as Boerum Hill (or BoerumHill.)

Peace out.

Go Lions! End the Chiefs reign of terror!

Your Cheese Rankings thread was extremely disappointing

I was pro-emoji at the start of the thread as had not really seen what had prompted the ban. But, the more this thread goes on (and the different reactions on whether to ban the people misuing it, or encouraging those complaining about the misuse to deal with it), the more I can see why Joe made the decision he did.

Talk about getting blown out of proportion. We still have what, 200 other emojis to use. I barely pay attention to them anyway. It does seem silly to get rid of it, but it seems even crazier to get so upset about it. Joe has a great site here. Joe sets the rules. Someone else said it is like Joe asking us to remove our shoes before entering his house. So please everyone, just remove your shoes, get comfortable and relax in Joe's house. Save these silly games for facebook, X and all of those other garbage dumps.

If youre talking about Cowboysfan, the only poster who I can connect your conspiracy theory, conspiracy - Is in jest about a rival football team's fans who are known to hit the report function - that is indeed a fact.

On the flip side youre accusing people of essentially being nuts and then calling another poster a coward.

Supremely weird take.

Nothing has been "Blown out of proportion"

We are having an adult conversation about how silly it is to remove smilies because of few "adults" cant handle it.

You literally agree with the stance of EVERYONE here who disagrees. We think its not the ending of the earth, but is silly and we want to express why and have a discussion about it. Thats not blowing things out of proportion.

I didn't accuse anyone of being nuts, and I have no idea what you mean by accusing people of being nuts. So, yeah, right back at you with the weird take.

Thanks for the feedback and I'm sorry to hear you think that.

I don't see only allowing 5 instant reaction emojis is crapping on people. I see it as trying to have a forum where where people are more cool to each other.

No idea why you think you'd be banned for criticizing. Or it's some "hill to die on". I'm criticized here regularly. That's nothing new.

As I said, we felt streamlining the instant emojis to have 5 options and not having the one that was used to mock others was our best path.

I've always tried to do what's best for the forum. That's disappointing that gets interpreted as "crapping on" or "sad" but I appreciate you sharing how you feel.

Hope folks enjoy the games today.

Who are these people saying "they know" stuff behind the scenes? Link?
Every single person claiming that they were taken away because people were reporting and complaining.

I'm the one asking for a link. I am asking for a link to proof that this was done for reasons people (like you) are taking as fact, which as far as I can tell, is a GUESS

When my daughter was a kid, I created a club penguin account and I would harass her by going into her igloo and stand/ stare at the wall or I would follow her around wherever she went and challenge her to games (I always won). It got to the point, that she was complaining about me to her online and real life friends that also played club Penguin. When she was a teenager, I accidentally let it slip that I had done that to her. She’s 24 now and has thick skin!

This is exactly where I’m at too. I don’t care at all about the emoji itself. It’s about what the decision represents. I just can’t believe we live in a world where 40/50 year-old men need to be pandered too for slightest of possible offenses. I’ve become use to it for todays 20somethings. But man am I disappointed in my fellow Gen-Xers. I thought we were tougher then that.
How do we know it is us Gen-Xers complaining, it is probably the weaker millennials or Gen-Zers who take everything literally and are offended by everything.
All 7 of them that visit this board?
Laugh emoji.

Link to people advocating for the smilie so they can harass other posters?

100% serious question, are you one of the people who is offended by the laughing emoji?

I don't see only allowing 5 instant reaction emojis is crapping on people. I see it as trying to have a forum where where people are more cool to each other.
But that's not what you get. You actually get a forum where a very small group of people control you and crap on the rest of us.

In any event, being able to laugh at a poster's content without having to copy the whole thing speeds up the board. Reading it is more fluid and enjoyable. Having to scroll through a crapton of reactions to the same post is a PITA.

Please reconsider this.

Ex.

ENFJ: “I'm sure someone as intelligent and knowledgeable as you can see why I'm right about this. I can only see good things coming from this, there's so many potential things we can accomplish.”

Ex.

Boss: You're not making any sales.

ENTJ: I'm not making any sales because the customer flow has been reduced. I actually charted customers from this month and last. Which aligns to the exact day you hiked the prices up on the merchandise. Considering the demographic of our customers, I don't think they can afford our products. I know the guy above you is breathing down your neck, and that's why you're trying to make me the target. I figured you would do something like this, so I went ahead and emailed all my findings to your boss with various ideas on how we can increase sales 40%. In about a week, I'll be your boss and do your job better.

Boss: ……..

Hope you enjoyed. Please be know this is (mostly) tongue-in-cheek.

INFJ here
🤣

I read relevant sections of this to my wife (ISFJ/ISFP) and she was beyond annoyed by the description of me (INTJ, ENTJ). She quickly pivoted from “what is going on with FBGs and why?” to “yeah, those descriptions sound like you. I can’t imagine how exhausting it must be for your boss and co-workers.”

Good times.

🤛

So now, instead of using a smile or laughing "reaction" people will just use these :lmao::-) in replies instead. Not sure how that improves the usability or deters what is being "abused".

"Please laugh"

When my daughter was a kid, I created a club penguin account and I would harass her by going into her igloo to just stand or I would follow her around wherever she went. It got to the point, that she was complaining about me to her online and real life friends that also played club Penguin. She’s 24 now and has thick skin!
When she outgrew Club Penguin did you whine and complain to your friends that you couldn't harass her anymore?

Link to people advocating for the smilie so they can harass other posters?

100% serious question, are you one of the people who is offended by the laughing emoji?
No, I wasn't. And the powers that be would back that up. Far as I can remember, I only ever reported one guy from the Political Forum, who has since scampered off elsewhere to be a troll.

No, I don't have a link to people advocating for emojis so they can harass people. Which I don't need to provide, because I never said that. NOw: Can I get that link that I asked for? I have answered your questions, now answer mine:

What's the proof that this was all created by a small group of posters who complained and reported?

I fully expect you, and everyone else, to ignore this question.

I’d be disappointed if you left over this. I’ve enjoyed your posts and hope I get to continue to read them in the future. Good luck in Wisconsin either way.

My recollection was some people did report it back in the PSF days and it was discussed back then - however, 1. I could be wrong as my memory sucks and 2. I don’t even care. Whether the decision was for that reason or another one it’s a bad decision (and one Joe has every right to make). As other posters have pointed out, this lessens the community - there’s a reason the bored software allows the feature and had that as a emoji. It encourages people to interact and make jokes and laugh together, the same way we would if we were all sitting around watching football and drinking beer together. It also, as Mrs. R points out, keeps the post count down so you don’t have to scroll through posts that are just :lmao:

You are right, and I remember, and I also know that's why people are assuming that is the reason for this current decision, but since Squis and GoBirds aren't really around much anymore, I don't see how it applies to this scenario. I think you would agree that's not proof.

I actually believe Joe when Joe gave his reason. I choose to not believe what everyone thinks is the reason, (with zero evidence,) while indirectly calling Joe a liar, as they decide his answer wasn't the truth.

Can anyone even point to one example of when this was happening lately, where someone was weaponizing the laugh emoji? I can't. Whereas the last time it was banned, everyone knew why, and there were plenty of examples. If no one has any examples, why would I even assume someone knows what they are talking about when they offer an alternative theory to Joe's explanation?

People were complaining, and need to toughen up? Yeah maybe, and maybe people who got an emoji taken away need to toughen up.

I believe Joe too - I just think he’s wrong. Telling people to toughen up is fine but it’s a weird way for a community to be run. I’ve said for years I come here for the laughs - and I firmly believe we will get less funny posts due to this decision. It’s as simple as that, for me.

We’ve seen tons of good posters leave over moderation and decisions like this - if the people who have stuck around and still get something out of the community don’t speak up on these things then the numbers will continue to dwindle. In the same way that I believe Joe above, I also believe him when he says he wants the FFA and see value in this community. If he wants to to add vs. subtract to it then I think he should reconsider.

Go read the Tyreek Hill thread and get back to us

Although all the smileys got removed in the shark pool, so it might be tough to tell now

Yeah, just like all the ones here and in every thread, the laughs in the SP/Tyreek thread(s) are gone.
