Sometimes people make inane posts that replying to would only detract from/derail the thread itself. I liked the laugh emoji for these because when I was growing up and people were saying crazy things and/or trying to troll I found it best to "laugh it off". It was more or less a "ok, whatever you say bud" reply without even having to reply. And while this can probably come off as patronizing, as for the "just scroll by" retort; I do think it's important to let people know sometimes when their comments are inane in hopes they may have a little introspection on it, or at the very least, curb them from continuing to do it in the future. A quasi way for the community to moderate itself without stressing the FBG staff to get involved.

It's not a huge deal. But I don't think it's going to solve the purported problem. I do think it'll clutter up the boards with more one word/in line emoji responses. And I worry it could actually lead to more conflict/thread derailment as people no longer have the option to "laugh it off" and instead start to bicker with replies. Which also winds up with a need for even more moderator intervention. Hopefully this isn't the case.

@Joe Bryant,

We have a thumb-up button. Why no thumb-down? I think that alone would solve much of these problems. People want to express disagreement. If you don't provide the expedient thumb-down, they will look for alternative ways to express their views, often in harsher and more problematic tones than the simple dislike/disagree that the thumb down represents, which then can spiral into vortices of self-fueling negative inference patterns between two sides of an issue. Simple thumb-down wouldn't cure all, but I think it would cure a lot.

Back up a sec, are we saying its wrong to harass Raider fans?
Bring it on!
When my daughter was 4, she did not understand sports rivalries. She made a comment during the Chiefs game that she thougth the Denver uniforms were pretty. I calmly explained to her that while they had pretty unifroms, the Broncos team was mean to puppies. I also let her know that the Raiders were mean to babies. Crisis averted.

It would be a great way to show posters who are being uncool that they’re being uncool, but it would end up leading to the same abuse as the laughing button

Wait, you think that the same people that couldn't handle a :ROFLMAO: will be able to handle a thumbs down? I am guessing that would be just as bad or maybe even worse in their eyes.

Yeah. It works OK on Reddit but also is anonymous. There is a reason Twitter has never tried it...

The Board I mentioned up-thread - uses a Disagree, WTF?, Dislike and a Spam - reaction. (same software as this board)

It's a rating system, and once you are used to it - it works. I think it generally helps people disagree without being disagreeable, and it also serves as a way for users to moderate their own posts - if you act like a troll, the reactions will reflect that.

It's a :lmao: story. It's also a really sad story for me as you didn't bother to mention the Chargers at all.

the thing about raiting systems and just is it just becomes a popularity contest. I mean, I guess it's not really all that different than what we were doing with likes/laughing etc.

Because people would use it on every single post for someone they don't like, irrespective of what that person had to say.

So disregard it and/or block the person.

Being inclusive does not mean constantly excluding things, sorry but the approach in these forums is backwards.

I love you man, and at one point I probably would have also been annoyed at **** like that. But you know - let it go friend. It feels good. Like really good. We have way more stuff to really be annoyed at that wasting energy on whether someone thumbs up or down is not worth it.

I am sure you do.

joe please bring back the reaction emojis and just discipline the people that misuse them i think that is overwhelmingly what the members want

Thanks. We tried that and I chose not to do mass suspensions for people.

We'll stick to the 5 instant reaction emojis.

And of course, still have all the emojis available within the comment replies.
@Joe Bryant , this is already having a negative effect. I'm reading a topic about music. We can't have a normal chat with each other because the normal reaction choices are missing. Why the heck would we all hang out with a bunch of people for many years when we can't laugh or smile at them? You are basically taking away the part that makes us a community without offering any alternative except for a beige office space.

Having to repost every little thing takes away a lot of the fun.

Maybe you should just add a "grow the bleep up" response.

Thanks and I can see your point.

For now, we'll only be able to have the instant emojis of
  • Thanks
  • Love
  • Thinking
  • Sad
  • Like

And of course, all the emojis are still available within the comments as they always have been.

I realize that may not cover everything for a normal chat, and I realize that may not be the news you'd want to hear or if only allowing those 5 takes away the fun of a community.
