Non-drinkers -- why don't you drink? (1 Viewer)

Question for you guys that are non or light drinkers.

Do have best practices / tips for how to handle social situations? Is it ever "weird" that you're not drinking when you're out?
Usually that is the only time I drink, but I have not drank enough to get drunk in 12 years, and I have never had anyone push back on a simple "Nah, I'm good, thanks though" type of response to more drinks.

I honesty don't even give it a second thought if I am out and someone chooses not to drink. I realize not every one likes it. In fact, I am way more likely to take note of the person that overdoes it than the person that doesn't drink at all.

Speaking of which, I keep seeing people referring to hangovers. Folks do realize you can drink and only have one or two right? Drinking to excess isn't a requirement or anything.

Wayne Wheeler, the lobbyist responsible for prohibition, hailed from Cleveland. According to Levenstein, he made it his life's mission to banalcohol after being stabbed with apitchfork by a drunk farmhand as a child. - Cleveland’s “Drunk History” tribute

I found the results of the other drinking poll surprising -- didn't realize we had that many people here who don't drink at all.

Why don't you drink?

- Health reasons?

- Religious reasons?

- Moral reasons?

- Bad experience?

- Just don't like it? (wtf)

Educate we drinkers (who should probably drink less) about your motivations.

Thanks.
Lot of chiming in from people who do drink, if only occasionally. IT IS NOT ALWAYS ABOUT YOU.

I only drink socially cuz a buzz is fun when out with friends. But I hate the taste of alcohol so I lean toward sweet drinks like ciders, Moscato, gewurztraminer.

Never was for me.  I guess I never felt the least pressure to smoke/drink/do drugs.  I would hang out with people who were doing pitchers and never felt odd.  Everyone knew I didn't really care for that stuff.  Maybe I was lucky.

It's not always necessary to get drunk to have a hangover.  (Yes, I know it helps.)

I agree with the rest of your post but not sure I agree with this.  What are you basing this on?  I know plenty of business men and many drink.
I'm talking about the top guys...Trump, gates, Buffet, Musk.  None of these guys are regular drinkers.

Most of the C Suite I interact with are also not big drinkers and I know and have worked with hundreds.

That being said, of course there are successful execs that drink.  Bezos is a drinker if I recall.

I’ve just recently cut back my drinking substantially. Main reason is I’m 45 and it’s catching up to me. Was a heavy drinker in college and all throughout my 20’s. Moderate drinker from my 30’s up until now - even after marriage and kids. I’m on two blood pressure medicines and cholesterol medicine as well. I’m just done with the ball and chain. I don’t drink at home anymore. I may have a beer if we go out to dinner, but only if it’s a new or favorite ipa. I had a glass of wine tonight at a fundraiser, mainly because I’d have rather not been there - just to loosen up. A huge aspect of getting healthier is sticking with the gym routine and eating better - I’m doing my best - but I’ve also realized that there’s just no upside anymore to drinking 20-30 beers per week - it just isn’t necessary anymore (it never was to begin with). My kids are young - I want to see them grow much older. On the Facebook, there have been 5 obituaries shared just this year of white guys dying in their 40’s. That really spooked me. I’ve been drinking a ton of flavored seltzer waters and they’re a great substitute. I’ve always used beer as a crutch to self medicate due to a stressful job. Now I don’t let my job stress me out anymore. It’s amazing how I was somehow able to rewire my brain. I’ve finally realized that the past doesn’t have to be the future. I can decide how to live my life. Choices matter. I can move on from the past and shape my own future.

Never really appealed to me.  I'll drink at Oktoberfest or nurse a beer at a barbecue, even have an after dinner shot of schnaps or ouzo.  Have no problem not drinking while everyone else is at a party.

OTOH, I'm always down to partake in a couple of bong rips.

My experience is the opposite. I know a lot of very successful people, and once the work day is over, it’s off to the bar for a good time. In fact, I would say the vast majority of people I work with and interact with on a regular basis are fairly heavy drinkers. I literally do not work with one person who doesn’t drink at least somewhat regularly.

Interesting, perhaps I've had a unique experience.   I've mostly worked with technology executives...it could just be that vertical.

Trump takes speed kinda seems worse tbh.

I'm kind of surprised that people would rather smoke weed than drink.  Inhaling any kind of smoke into my body just never appealed to me.  I can't see swapping out an ice cold beer for a joint after doing yard work all day.

That said, I'm kind of glad edibles aren't readily available here.  Gummie Bears that get you high is a game changer
Vaping has changed the game in terms of THC consumption - no smoke nor all the sugar/starchy carbs with edibles.   Think the booze v. weed thing just depends on the person.  One does nothing for me except add extra pounds.  The other makes life a little more enjoyable without the calories or hangover.

Early in life I was a social drinker, but would drink 'til wallet was empty. Around 22 got into a serious band and quit pretty much everything so I could concentrate on music. Plus I saw that no matter how much people proclaimed to play better, they did not. Never picked it back up. Also my mother was an alcoholic, who would take verbal swipes at me whenever we crossed paths if she had been drinking. She went through counseling and became a insufferable person who blamed everyone else for what she had become. Forgot to mention that the way all this came out was when I was a teenager and was at work the police showed up to have me pick her up from the drunk tank. Just decided I did not want to be like that. Both sides of the family have alcoholics or intense drinkers and was told that could be a trait that may come around. Really do not feel I missed much.

My last drink was in Las Vegas in December 2017. We went on a nighttime helicopter ride with Maverick Helicopters and they offered complimentary champagne. I took 3 sips, found a trash can, and went outside and hit my vape pen.

Alcohol just isn't for me.
