Its a little different since while the indivdual teams are competing with one another the 32 teams form a collective, the NFL, so in many ways they are all part of the same team as well. Kraft knew he was screwing over another owner since McDaniels already commited there a month ago to the point the Colts were moving forward with Josh in place and foregoing other candidates. They should have convinced him to stay before they sent him out to interview and especially before he commited to a job.

 
So this thinking is Josh will take over after Bill, Brady and Gronk simultaneously retire?

So Josh will be accepting a job with the 2016/17 Cleveland Browns?

Help me out here.

It is almost like Kraft went out of his way to screw over the Colts, I wonder why

 
It’s easy for colts fans to say “we dodged a bullet” but it sucks for them to have to listen to how bad their orginazation is and have this mess on their hands. As a lions fan I can relate. One guy who has ties to both that would be a stabilizing factor and could deal with having talented coaches he didn’t pick is caldwell. I know Indy would collectively groan at this but given the situation he might make sense if he’d take a year to year type deal.

Bc it's the normal course in the NFL due to the rule that the coaches cannot sign until they are done w the season. The assistance coaches' seasons were over, but NE was still playing so McDaniels was not permitted to sign.   Plus, McDaniels is the one who recruited them.  This scenario is more in line with college recruits who commits only to find out the HC is leaving.....but way more rare.

Luck may not out of the woods yet regarding his right shoulder, as ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported "there still are doctors who have concerns about Luck's shoulder and whether he could wind up needing additional surgery."

As a local, I did just groan reading this. Lol. He was torturous to watch manage a game. Can't see Irsay going that route. Locals beat writers keep throwing out Dave Toub - KC special teams coach.

Oh I get it man, but who are you hoping for as a fan this late in the cycle? It seems reich would have a lot of suitors if the eagles did well again, and if it’s me I bet on myself and hopefully have options to choose from and not just take the first job that’s offered (in a questionable situation.) There are some guys that have been named the last few years and have interviewed for a lot of jobs like Teryl Austin, do you try to give them a shot? Give me a short list of 4-5 guys you would like to see if you have the time @JohnnyU. I hate to say punt the year and start over next year but this is a very unusual situation that the best options may avoid.

A search for who else was interviewed

just looking at the headlines here makes me think something is very wrong with the organization. Spurned by rhule, Nagy was “uncomfortable,” now the McDaniels deal. There was one guy who wouldn’t even interview for the job.

I would guess Irsay has something to do with it. Along with the fact that they close to the least talented roster in the NFL. As well as the fact that their best player has not played in over a year and is still not throwing footballs.

 
Guessing that Kraft just blew away McDaniels with a massive amount of $ to keep the continuity in Brady/Belichick's final couple years?

Think I read the point somewhere (Peter King maybe?) that any new OC would be difficult to integrate into the offense given how much it's Brady's offense as well at this point.

Losing Patricia, clearly, probably doesn't make much difference.

I don't know who the Colts will interview for the job, but one thing is clear, if the Colts wanted to they could eat the contracts of the  new asst. coaches, but I hope they keep Matt Eberflus.  Look at the bright side, there are no other teams looking for a HC now, so the Colts may come out of this just fine.  I think McDaniels just imprisoned himself with the Patriots, because no other team will ever touch him as a HC.  Also, once he takes over for the Patriots and fails (again), he will be relegated to being an offensive coordinator for the rest of his career. In the end this may be a blessing for the Colts.  Yes, Patriots fans are laughing, saying it's payback for deflategate, etc., but I really don't care about that.  The Colts will come out of this OK IMO and McDaniels has crippled his career possibilities with any other team except NE.  What worries me more than McDaniels is Andrew Luck.  I hope he recovers and plays this year, but if he doesn't, and the Colts know this now, they should spend their #3 pick on a QB in a QB rich draft.  Better to do this now than trying to do it later.  If that happens they will surely be drafting high again next year, and that too is OK.

I wonder how much they let a new offensive minded head coach talk to his new qb, or how those conversations went. 

That the conversation between Kraft and McDaniels wasnt just about the patriots opportunity, but to point out that the reason the colts wanted him specifically may have been because they knew he might be coaching Jacoby again instead of Andrew luck. 

That the motivation wasn't just about succession planning for Belichick or screwing the colts, but also planning around Brady because they want someone who can keep continuity this year while grooming a new guy and are willing to pay a premium for it.

Rational?  You think ruining your reputation with the league is rational?  This is about more than just McDaniels spurning the Colts, he brought in the asst coaches and abandoned them.  That won't sit well with the rest of the league.  So, keep your guy McDaniels because he's all yours now.  When the Pats hire him as their next coach and he performs like he did in Denver, the Colts will be laughing at the Patriots and Josh McDaniels.

Is it possible that Brissett is an average starter? That he takes the reigns another year even if they know before April that luck wouldn't be back? He's not great, but I don't know that he's the problem there. If they like a QB at 3, great. But if not, stick with what you have.

Yep. He's very much sink or swim in NE now. And frankly, once Brady and BB leave, I'd bet on sink.

If Luck isn't in their future you take a QB when the draft is as good as this one is.  Brissett is a fine backup QB, but that is exactly what he is, a backup.

 
McDaniels will be a HC in the future if he wants to. People might not like what he did, but those that suggest he is dead to the rest of the league are way over thinking this. He spurned one team, but another team couldn't care less if they think he's the best man for their HC position.

I don't really care that he spurned the Colts.

I do care, as the owners and other coaches should, that he spurned the coaches that he hired and took from other teams. 

Some owner might overlook that, but not the great ones you'd really want to work for.

That might be true if he had succeeded elsewhere, but he hasn't.  All the rest of the league knows is that he failed in Denver and is a punk to boot.  There is a big question mark surrounding Josh McDaniel's ability as a HC, but there is no question about his character.  Go talk to those asst. coaches that he dramatically affected.

Not sure I agree with this take. I think McDaniels just stays in NE. But if he were to be considered some place else, I think teams will be gun shy. 

The Patruots will likey be in the playoffs and advancing. So other teams won’t be able to sign him. I’m not sure other teams will want to risk being told no after all the other top candidates went elsewhere.

Correct. But I think it is fair to say that it is a mark against him, and some were already questioning his capabilities after the disaster in Denver.  So it does make it harder for him to get an offer, plus now teams will know you can't trust him to keep his word. 

 
Patriot way.  I know he didn't sign the contract and it wasn't a formally done deal, but he agreed in principal and knew the press conference was scheduled for today to announce him as head coach of the Colts.  No matter what team you root for, this is bad form.  And bad business.  And not going to be received well by the 30 other owners in the league. Like I said, Patriot way....ok that last part was a factor of who I root for

I don't get the Irsay comments.  He isn't Jerry Jones.  He might do some dumb things, but he's always given his coaches a pretty long leash, not meddled with the coaching decisions, etc.  I think he has caused more problems for the GM's, but not the coaches.  

 
I agree with those that say the Colts came out better in the long run with this news.  Denver fans may remember his short time there didn't produce a lot of top ten franchise moments.  

The comparison to Lane Kiffin might be spot on.

Both these things affect coach performance. 

Anyway, it wasn't really a shot as much as it was a jab that I was taking there. Dude is crazy as an outhouse mouse.

In the context of NFL coaches' warped worldview, I kind of get it. These guys are all such workaholics, they don't want to waste those two weeks before the Super Bowl waiting for everything to get confirmed. They just want to get in the building and start watching film or whatever it is they do for 22 hours a day.

Probably true. We can enjoy being cellar dwellers together and the rest of the league can enjoy not hearing about the pats and colts for a while.

Because never in the history of the league before have assistants that did so gotten screwed like this.  This isn't on them, McDaniels gave them his word and then backed out of it, period.

What would be absolutely hilarious is when the time comes the Patriots need a coach, they realize McDaniels sucks and they hire a big name guy to be their new HC.  Then McDaniels discovers he has no other options as a HC.  Talk about Karma.
