BTW, this morning he compared our Wind Chill( -55) to his air temperature and told me it was 100 degree difference

yesterday at 10 am cst, in sanibel/ft myers it was 78 degrees. it was -22 here. So a 100 degree difference in just temp, not wind chill.

My sister-in law has a county position, she posted on facebook over the weekend that she does not have to work today because all non-essential employees do not need to come in to work. I thought, probably not the best thing in the world to post that you have a government job and you are considered non-essential.

Myself and my wife are working today while my daughters are home from school, we were just notified school is closed tomorrow as well.

It's 24 degrees here. I'm in the Atlanta burbs. It's rare that we ever have a high temperature below freezing, so this is unbearable for these people. There's been no precipitation, but the schools in my county are closed.

Yep. Gonna be 7 or so tonight. Incredibly cold for us here in the Atlanta area but I don't see the need to close schools today and some have already said they'll be closed tomorrow, too.

I have a feeling I'm going to regret not winterizing my pool.

-23 F on my truck this morning with -50 F windchill. Everybody is at the office. Forecast says high of +32 F Friday, so if there's not much wind that day that's an 82 degree difference in the same town 5 days apart.

Same here. I was prepared to go to work this morning—spent an hour yesterday shoveling—and got a late email saying the office will be closed.

Made it down to Walgreens earlier and dressed appropriately, the cold wasn't that bad. But my eyes wouldn't stop watering, glasses fogged up and I could barely see where I was going.

It's freaking freezing here by new jersey standards and the higher ups are clearly not interested in effective climate control. The women here are shivering at their desks.

I haven't been outside since I got to work in Florham Park this AM at like 8:30. It was in the mid-40's and raining then...is it THAT much colder out now?

I'm genuinely worried about ice. After all the snow, then the rain and melting, now it's going to get crazy cold...roads are going to be ice rinks.

This is what I'm thinking. If it's just cold but my street is clear, no reason to stay home. But roads may be awful

That's what I was thinking if it's just it's freezing out. I'm sure you can bear the walk to the car then to the office. I used to live in an the mountains that got feets of snow and ice. Nothing stopped there.

If schools don't get a certain % of students in attendance, it doesn't even count as an actual school day. Plus, schools are often responsible for transportation, which is complicated in weather like this. It's just easier to close the schools. I am sure your office would close if it was responsible for picking up and dropping off most of the employees and if there was the risk that if enough employees took a day off, the entire day's work done by those that did show had to be thrown out.

Friends of mine work at 3M in Minnesota and they all received emails to either work from home or take a vacation day. No one was suppose to go into work.

I work close to that site and the official word was "do what you have to do." Office is open, but not many are around.

Just because he lives a block away, doesn't mean the office is going to be open. If it is closed, it doesn't really matter his proximity to work.

The point that has been going around is that, in workplaces with discretionary attendance in case of bad weather, it's often the folks with the shortest commutes that are the most liberal with the work-from-home policy, while the folks who have much longer commutes show up, which is counter-intuitive.

I don't think he was suggesting that the person would be punished. It sounds like he's equating "showing up to do your job that you're paid to do" as "punishment," which is ######ed.

"I live a block away from the office and could easily come in to work. But my coworker who lives an hour away isn't coming in today, so neither am I!" What kind of childish nonsense is that?

It is (insert several curse words here) cold. I'm getting old. I used to like this weather. Now I'm sitting in my office with a suit and my winter coat on.

All schools in the area are delayed opening.... which seems rather stupid to me, until I talked to a buddy who does buildings and grounds type work. The schools can't get the buildings up to heat right away in the morning with it being so cold so they delayed basically so that they could warm the buildings enough so there aren't any kidsicles. Makes sense I guess.

this is why it was smart for some places to close. People aren't going outside unless they have to. Some businesses just won't do business in these conditions. Save on the hourly labor and eat the overhead, that's what my employer did. Smart move IMHO.

Walk across the subzero parking get inside to feel relief until a few minutes later when I noticed it people wearing their coats and gloves at their desks. Our heater wasn't working fully. So I got to sit at my desk inside at 50 degrees. Hardly freezing but you don't realize how cold that is until you sit in it and try to type on a pc all day. So fun day all around.
