***OFFICIAL 2006 WORLD SERIES Game Thread*** (1 Viewer)

BTW, I'm officially starting a new religion:

Pujism

Everyone is welcome to join as long as they understand and believe that Pujols is a living, breathing, and walking God.
He's damn close. The only hitters I've ever watched that I think are as good are Carew, Griffey Jr, and Bonds.

Oh, and go Tigers. The Cards fans in Columbia have just become unbearable.
Yeah, because Columbia has always been Royals country.
Yeah, because that's clearly what I meant.
Yeah, fans in Columbia should root for their own MLB team!
There's a huge difference between rooting, and becoming unbearable. For example, Ghost Rider is rooting. You're unbearable.Get the difference?

That's kind of funny but this is a baseball thread. Comedy is not warranted.

The Cardinals are really pouring it on now. I honestly did not expect them to do nearly this well in game 1. With the Reyes/Verlander matchup, I was hoping they could keep it around a tie game before it got to the bullpens. This, I was not expecting.

You don't want any tie games going to the bullpen in this series. Cards will lose.I thought the Cards would win this game because of Detroit's rust but this is a little ridiculous.

can somebody explain why that was interference? they were both 12 feet off the basepath and it isnt like he was blatantly trying to get in rolen's way

Perhaps, but like I said, given how poorly Reyes has pitched lately, I figured that would be the best case scenario for tonight.

See, I didn't think the rust would hurt them. Whether it really has is debatable.

Did you watch any of the AL playoffs? They are definitely rusty tonight.
I've watched all of the playoffs. Even if they are rusty, which I don't doubt, I think some credit has to be given to the Cardinals, too. That gal is not a good singer. That last note was horrible.

I've never said anywhere the Cards don't have a chance like others. I won't give them too much credit in shutting the Tigers down but I will give them credit for a six run lead. They belong in the World Series. Period.

So, you do not want to give any credit to Reyes for turning in a great performance tonight? I won't deny that the Tigers are a little rusty, but some credit has to be given to Reyes.

Reyes has been able to take advantage of a Tiger team coming off a week long layoff.
:goodposting: A rookie pitching in a Game one of a World Series on the road. Great result but I think the Tigers had more to do with the outcome than Reyes. Too many pop ups, quick swings, and lazy swings. This is the worst I've seen them look at the plate all year. But the Cards deserve this game. If the Tigers can't hit in game two I'll be worried but for now I'm still pretty optimistic about things.

In SI they reported that a player in April/May blew through Lamont's sign's at third. Evidently Leyland blew a nut and said he wouldn't put up with that ####. Was it Dmitri?

Fair enough.

Regardless of the outcome of tonight's game, tomorrow night ought to be interesting, to see how both Weaver and Rogers do. Neither have historically faired well when it really matters, but both have this October, so I guess we will see if one or both of them can keep it up.

Well coming into the series game two was a W in the Tigers column IMO. Rogers>>>>>Weaver but if the Tigers hit like tonight, I'm gonna be sick.

See, I had it the other way. I figured the Tigers would win game 1, and that the Cards would have a much better chance of winning game 2.
Rogers>>>>>Weaver
Okay, but Glavine is also better than Weaver, yet Weaver outpitched him in game 5 of the NLCS. And Carpenter was outpitched by some Mets pitcher whose name I do not even remember now! :P In the playoffs, it is not always as simple as saying, "this pitcher is better than this pitcher, so that is the deciding factor."

Rogers hasn't allowed a run in 15 innings in the playoffs and won 17 games this year, two more than the NL Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter.

You are correct.

I am aware, but I assume you have been watching MLB long enough to know that there is no such thing as a sure thing in the playoffs.

Johnson and Schilling were in 2001.
Schilling would have been the losing pitcher in game 7 if not for Arizona's comeback in the bottom of the 9th against Rivera, who is about the closest thing to a sure thing MLB has ever seen, and even HE has blown a few postseason games over the years. And remember what I said earlier about Reyes allowing too many HR's because he lets pitches hang over the plate? Yeah. :(Still, a great performance by Reyes tonight.

Also it's suppose to rain the next two days in Detroit. Looks like it will rain all day tomorrow and then sleet on Monday. I can see this series getting pushed back a few days.

Sunday: Periods of rain, mainly before noon. High near 49. South southeast wind 7 to 14 mph becoming west. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

Sunday Night: A chance of rain showers, mixing with snow after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35. West northwest wind between 11 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Would it be too much to ask for Ordonez to rip a pitch straight back at Looper's face and cave in his nose, causing him to have to retire? Just asking.

Not looking too good.

Great pitching tonight from Reyes, a near complete game and the Cardinals didn't have to use the "main" closing group of Flores, Kinney and Wainwright. As a Cardinal fan it couldn't have gone any better as a lot of players were hitting as well.

I had the feeling that there would be some rust from the Tiger hitters - and they did. The had 1-0 counts and got anxious and suddenly two foul pitches later they were behind in the count. That showed they weren't visually ready yet and the one week layoff had them pressing early.

For Detroit fans, I remember going to Game 1 of the 82 Series against the Brewers at Busch and watching a drubbing worse than this. I was so pissed I had to buy some scalped tickets for Game 2. Cards came back in that one.

If the weather reports are right I think it will help the Cardinals some more to give their pitchers a little more rest and it will frustrate Detroit who will be chomping at the bit to rectify tonight's performance - hopefully they'll continue to press.

At least we have a Series here and I think any thoughts of sweeping a team with Albert Pujols was a ridiculous one.

Nice football weather.REDBIRDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :banned:

Meh, I was hoping to come home to a historic Tigers comeback.

I just hope it's a good series. People on the coasts need to realize that the rest of the country can play, too.

Sorry for interjecting Yankee-ism into a WS thread, but the Tigers are looking a lot like the '96 Yanks. First time in the WS in a long time, cruise through the first two rounds and then wait around for the hot team coming off a tough series. Get blitzed Game 1 and 2 at home before settling in and rolling the rest of the way.

I still say Tigers in 6, but wouldn't be shocked if it went either way. And no, I cannot believe that Jeff Weaver and Kenny Rogers are going to be dueling in Game 2 (and possibly 6) of the World Series. It's too much to process right now. :D

Should be a great series!

Pretty much dead on. The 1982 World Series was the first one I really watched closely. I was a kid and I loved the Brewers glove hat. Still love that glove hat!
