****OFFICIAL 2009 Off Season Washington Redskins Thread**** (1 Viewer)

Skins are actually making some good moves IMO. We always talk about how they overspend, but they always seem to find a way to restructure and keep moving forward each year. If they keep all their picks and only use them on the O and D lines, I'd be thrilled.

only one team with multiple needs would throw $115m at one guy and $45m at a proven locker-room cancer: our Washington Redskins.

I'll hand it to Snyder - he has unique ability to continue to kill something that's already dead!

JLC

As for the team's interest in offensive lineman Derrick Dockery, he is not scheduled to visit Redskins Park as of now, according to a source, although he remains in play as a possible target and dialogue between the sides is expected to continue. Dallas free agent defensive end Chris Canty, who had agreed at around 2 a.m. to visit Redskins Park, will not be coming here, and has other visits scheduled. He does not appear to be in Washington's plans now.

The Redskins may have to make a roster move as well before the contracts with Hall and Haynesworth are signed and executed with the league office. Releasing veteran corner Shawn Springs has been discussed within the building throughout the offseason, according to sources, and with Hall back and limited cap space remaining, the $6 million savings from parting with Springs could become important
I actually thought releasing Springs is a no brainer. He's still a very good player, but you can only count on him for 6-8 games a year.

The FO has given Skins fans reason to criticize and pull their hair out over MANY FA pickups the last few years, but I don't see how anyone can completely trash them picking up Hanesworth. He is EXACTLY what the Skins have needed the last...well, decade. The fact that the Skins D has remained in the top 15 for the last several years, without ANY pass rush, is pretty remarkable. I'm betting this one acquisition, as long as Hanesworth stays healthy and motivated, will have a HUGE domino affect on the D. It would not surprise me to see the Skins finish a top 5 D this year. Now if they could just patch up that old offensive line...

Andy Polin is already calling him Stubby 2.0. So the criticism is starting to come from the usual sources.

Wow..busy day boys!

If I was a Skins fan (Yeah right), I'd be happy about Hayneworth, but a little leary/concerned with the contract. The Hall signing was flat out terrible in my opinion.

Who else are you guys after? What is your cap situation now?

Hall played very well last year. I think he'll only play better this year having an entire year to understand the system and his teammates. Again, as long as he's not content now that he got his payday.

Amen & Amen

I think they want to sign Derrick Dockery. They have no further interest in Canty; he was the fallback if they didn't get Haynesworth. They'll need to cut and renegotiate to get under the cap, but they always do that every year so I'm not particularly worried about that part of it. I think they'll cut Springs now. They apparently want to keep Jason Taylor, and may re-sign Philip Daniels. Getting Dockery back would be a big, big step forward for them.

Thanks for the update, I try to keep up on what you guys are up to.I could never see Canty in Washington, didn't seem like a good marriage to me.

Frankly, Haynesworth seems exactly like what they needed most on defense --- big pressure up the middle from the D-line.

Maybe I am in the minority, but I think that the Hall signing was great and that the Haynesworth signing was also good but they overpaid. Hall has had one bad 1/2 of a year with the Raiders, and he played well the second half. He has the ability to be a shutdown corner, and looked to be getting his form back in the second half of the year.

I have no problems with the signings. And if the upcapped years come to fruition, the size of the contracts are really irrelevant. My biggest concern is you can't build an entire team by signing expensive free agents. Even without a salary cap, I doubt it will work. You need to draft well and keep fresh talent moving up through you team. It provided depth and prepares players to be future starters.

we're the off-season champs again! :wall:

$60m+ in guaranteed money, in my estimation, could net 5-6 real solid starters. instead, this completely incompetent front office spreads $160m in salary over 2 guys.

:nerd:

Posted at 6:50 PM ET, 02/26/2009Ray Willis Is Another Free Agent TargetRay Willis, the young Seattle tackle, could be the solution to Washington's right tackle problems, and is someone the team is looking at as free agency looms, according to a league source. Willis, 26, did not play much in his first three years in Seattle - he was drafted while Skins coaches Jim Zorn and Stump Mitchell were on the staff - but when injuries hit the Seahawks' line last year, he started 10 games and fared well.He is still a bit raw, but has great size at 6-feet-6, 315 pounds. Some executives in the league believe him to be Washington's top tackle option, and he will not be too expensive to land. With Derrick Dockery released and now someone younger who could be plugged in at guard, the Skins have some decent options. As we have previously reported, the Skins have given no indications that they will be making a play for the more expensive young offensive linemen like Jason Brown or Chris Kemoeatu. If the Skins can't land someone like Willis or Dockery, then older players coming off injuries would fit the value role. These are guys we have already discussed this week like Jeff Saturday, Mark Tauscher and Stacy Andrews.Posted by Jason La Canfora
The best part of having this much good, young and inexpensive OL talent available as FA's is that the team can then draft (hopefully) one of the two good DT's in the first round . . . and NOT sign Haynesworth. I hope this is this is the way it plays out.

If they cut Springs, I assume that ends the Carlos Rogers trade talk?
Looks like they'll need depth at cb. Sure could use a guy like Liegh Torrence. Maybe Justin Tryon will be able to contribute this year.
Hall, Rogers, and Smoot make a deep CB crop. Tryon was pathetic last year. I don't even remember him getting on the field last year.Skins might be trying to fill seats with these signings. Buddy of mine has season tickets and was on the fence about renewing. This might persuade him.Last year the D was top 10 and the offense was in teh bottom 5 in scoring offense. I think its safe to say we need OL line now. What do you guys think about trading with Detroit for pick 20 and pick 33 for the 13th pick? OT Oher could be there at 20 and maybe get C Alex Mack if he falls. Those 2 along with Dockery could stablize the O Line. Wishful thinking right?

IIRC, Tryon was getting some playing time at CB at the end of last year in place of Smoot.

Springs just can't stay on the field anymore.
Since 2002 (Haynesworth's rookie season), Springs has played in 91 games and Haynesworth has played in 90 games.
:goodposting:In Haynesworth's defense, however, Springs also played injured in a lot of games where he was physically limited. The effective number of games that Springs played in was less than that. The point stands however - Haynesworth has missed a lot of games.

Tryon will be no better than a dime CB and special teamer. He was a juco transfer to Arizona State and by most accounts was drafted at least a round early. Anyone pinning their hopes on him needs their head checked.

I agree. My comment was more an indictment of Smoot than praise for Tryon.

Last night, I was wondering if there was a way to get Haynesworth, resign Hall, and sign Dockery. We got 2 out of 3 so far. Really need to get a deal done with Dockery. If that gets done, then the only major holes left will be RT, SAM, run stuffing LDE, depth on the interior oline, P, and K.

I think the writing is on the wall that there's not going to be a salary cap in 2010. That's what makes the Haynesworth signing feasible.

I like resigning Hall too. He's only 25 and is an excellent fit for our defensive scheme.

I'm a big fan of us trading down in the draft. I would love for us to be able to trade down and acquire a 2nd round pick. Then draft the top OT and top C/OG available with our first 2 picks. Take the top OLB or DE (as long as they're not a reach) in the 3rd. Take the BAP with our remaining picks with priority placed on DL and LB.

OK, with the release of Springs, I am now starting to feel optimistic about the Haynesworth signing. For me, the crux of the Haynesworth deal is if he'll be motivated to play hard now that he's been paid. I'm quite concerned that it's going to take a mountain of effort to ensure that happens.

If the 'skins are going to do everything in their power to motivate Haynesworth to 'be all he can be', that is, continue to give the effort he showed while trying to land his big free agent payday, it was imperative that Springs be removed from the locker room. He's managed to bleed money off the Redskins for the last few years, while either not playing or playing at less than 100% (which may not entirely be his fault, I'll admit), but over the last few years, he's come to be regarded as more or less a prima donna by the Coaching Staff, if not the Players, from what I've heard from the guys I know. Not necessarily a 'cancer', but not a quality locker room presence either, and not the best example to have around with a green Head Coach, and a newly high-paid SuperStar Free Agent addition joining the Team. Guys like Portis, Fletcher, Samuels and Griffin want to win - the folks I know have indicated that Springs wasn't that guy any more - he was just here collecting paychecks.

Springs was a hell of a Corner, and most certainly has to still be considered among the Top 64 (starter caliber) Corners in the NFL, but he's falling to the bottom of that list with his durability issues, and for what he was being paid, he was becoming a millstone around the Redskins' necks. the Hall/Rodgers tandem is solid, and the Hall/Rogers/Horton/Landry Secondary is pretty much as good as it gets in the NFL. A motivated Haynesworth's disruptive presence on the D-Line should force enough pressure to make a strong secondary even better.

Production vs Performance vs Passion vs Paycheck - bye-bye Springs...and don't let the door hitcha where the Good Lord splitcha!!!

Smoot's a nickel at best, and like the rest of the 08 Draft Class, with the exception of Horton, Tryon has, at best, limited upside. Sad, but true.

Next on the agenda - we've put so much time and energy in developing Gholston and Montgomery it would be a shame to see them go as fallout from the gross amount of money paid to Haynesworth and Hall, but I fear that other Teams are going to swoop in and offer them just a bit more than the 'skins are comfortable paying, and if we lose them, it's wasted effort, and the lack of depth will be our undoing, yet again.

...and DAMN IT, address that O-Line!!!

How many players have the Redskins had the last 2 years who've been lazy and had to be "motivated"? I don't remember many. It's not a good locker room for slackers, and I think that is overlooked. When people talk about the "Redskins" needing to motivate someone it seems they're usually talking about top-down motivation, which is not how it seems to work on this team. The motivation seems to come from veteran players and from position coaches.

Without knowing anything about what players might be available at each spot, in general I think that's a good idea. And I'd very much like to see them sign Dockery. He has never missed a game.

from Vinnie the Ninja

Redskins executive vice president Vinny Cerrato said that after splurging on defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and cornerback DeAngelo Hall in the first seven hours of free agency, the club has only enough salary cap room to afford one more player, almost surely an offensive lineman.

Former Redskins left guard Derrick Dockery, cut by Buffalo on Thursday, is a leading candidate although right tackle Ray Willis, who was in Seattle with coach Jim Zorn, is another strong possibility.

So, the Redskins have cancelled the expected visit by Dallas defensive end Chris Canty. Indianapolis punter Hunter Smith also won't be coming as Washington will have to find a minumum salary type to compete with inexperienced recent signee Zac Atterberry.

Cerrato also said that he has talked to Carlos Rogers, and that everything's back to normal with the cornerback who was very unhappy after being benched in December. Cerrato said that Rogers will be a Redskin this season as will all three of the defensive tackles, Cornelius Griffin, Kedric Golston and Anthony Montgomery, who either reworked contracts or were given tenders this week.

me? the ONLY lecturing that I can recall doing was in my staunch defense of Saint Joe 2.0was that it?
It might have been you, I think it was. It's not something that has ever bothered me though. I'm just needling you about gloom, that's all. This team makes me gloomy sometimes too. Today's just not one of those times.

My god, you went in there (extremeskins) and got out alive? Congratulations. I thought you were a goner for sure. :bs:

I'm going to see what's going on over at Extremeskins. Wish me luck.
OK, so I read over at Extremeskins that apparently both Haynesworth and Hall had bigger offers from other teams, but chose the Redskins.
Without even looking, I'm going to call  on that one.
The thread claims Schefter said TB offered Haynesworth more and that Vinny said on 980 that Hall received a larger offer from an unnamed team. I agree, probably :lmao: .Of course, I don't know exactly what is meant by "more". More overall? More years? More signing bonus? More base salary? More incentives?

OK, now I'm officially starting to get lathered up...hmm, I wonder if you guys have ever seen me play the optimist. If this is true, and they can go into the Season with a Haynesworth/Griffin/Gholston/Montgomery rotation at D-Tackle, not only are they going to have the potential to get some fast pass from the D-Ends and OLB's, but the Secondary won't be hung out to dry either. One hand washes the other. Now, come on, fellas...ADDRESS THAT O-LINE!!!

This certainly has the potential to turn a merely good defense into a dominant one, but we've seen moves like this bust before. I will be quite happy if they can resign Dock though. Their OG spots are both in worse shape than even the RT spot. Heyer and Jansen can get us through another year if we have to choose between Dock and Willis.

BTW, one more thought about Dock versus Willis - Dock is a proven NFL starter; Willis has been unable to crack the starting lineup on a team that has had a lot of O-line problems since Hutch departed. Food for thought.

yeah...if I HAD to pick I'd go with Dock.
