****OFFICIAL 2009 Off Season Washington Redskins Thread**** (1 Viewer)

I heard Kevin Barnes scored 41 on the Wonderlic test.
And as we all know, if there's anything that correlates with Super Bowl wins it's brainy CB's. :pickle:
bringing back memories of the victorious Raider locker room and the Lester Hayes interview. I'll go out on a bit of a limb here and predict that KB will be the teams top CB in two years. this will probably coincide with them not resigning Rogers after '09 and releasing proven team cancer D.Hall after '10

As it's sunk it, I like the Barnes pick a lot. He's clearly better than a third round talent, and his injury sounds like a one-time freak thing, and most critically didn't involve his lower body. He looks like he's got a good chance to develop into a starting caliber CB. That's a great use of a third rounder in a weak draft.

I wonder what he really was suspended for.
I'll tell you what. Since Pelini took over the NU program, if a player is suspended for something other than a criminal infraction, the reason for the suspension is guarded with more secrecy than the secrets of the Vatican. These things aren't leaking out like they have in the past. There were 3 main rumors regarding the reason why Glenn was suspended.Rumor #1 was the ticket scalping which has since been debunked. I should have know better to believe this garbage when Glenn went on record saying this the other day, since it would of been an NCAA infraction and NU would of reported it to the NCAA.Rumor #2 was that he had an inappropriate relationship with a prominent booster's slightly underage daughter and was dealing with a civil suit as a result. I think this has been debunked as well, since someone confirmed that the only civil suit currently on the books dealing with Glenn has to deal with some unpaid rent.Rumor #3, is that he was sleeping with one of the coaches wives. I find this pretty feasible. It also makes sense that Glenn would lie about this as the reason he got suspended. This I do know. Whatever Glenn did to get suspended didn't have anything to do with the police or that would have leaked out within hours of his arrest. Also, I don't think it's a big deal he lied. This will have no bearing on whether he makes the team or not.

Well as horrifying as the front office can be, it's an easy rumor to believe. Hell, they might bring in Jeff George.

Chase Daniels already sounding like he's a good guy to have on the team...

Per JLC:

Lastly, what's Chase Daniel up to, you ask? (Well, you didn't, but since he shared via twitter (@chasedaniel), I'll pass it the details of his day and trip to DC along:

Early flight! Just had egg whites with mushrooms, chicken, and spinach with half of a bagel...got to continue the diet

Flight running a bit late but nothing can ruin this day! Wearing a red lacoste shirt with a Redskins hat in Cowboy territory

While I like him sporting the Skins gear, Daniel has about as much upside as Colt Brennan, imo. His ceiling is career backup. I know when he was at the Senior Bowl (or whatever postseason game he played in) he was having so much trouble taking snaps from under center and doing 3, 5, and 7 step drops, it was comical.

Zorn will come up with some drill involving a fire hose and a watermelon and straighten all those mechanics out. I am staying optimistically naive when it comes both our young QB prospects. If they did so well in college I have to think that there is a chance that they can perform in the NFL. I've always felt height and arm strength were overrated.

Well, he is an UDFA (and Colt was a late-round pick), so I don't think anyone is really expecting much.

I keep telling myself 'Joe Theisman was only 6' tall' over & over again. He was one hell of a QB.

I keep telling myself 'Joe Theisman was only 6' tall' over & over again. He was one hell of a QB.
Most of his linemen and opposing DL were shorter too.
I love these discussions because, while height is obviously an asset, it's not like these shorter linemen of yore didn't have arms to stick up into the air a foot or more higher to bat down passes. Drew Brees isn't much taller than Theismann and he's doing fine passing. You can either find throwing lanes (and of course get the ball to the receivers), or you can't.

Looks like LeRoy Hill will not be an option, report says he's close to re-signing in SEA.

Mora on KJR: Hawks, Hill close to a deal

Posted by Eric Williams @ 09:37:37 am

It appears the Seattle Seahawks strategy of rescinding the franchise tag on Leroy Hill in order to speed up negotiations with the 26-year-old linebacker may have paid off.

In an interview with KJR-AM’s Mitch Levy, Seattle head coach Jim Mora said the team could have a deal in place by the end of the day or tomorrow, and is confident Hill will remain with the team.

“We believe we made the right decision,” Mora said about the team rescinding the franchise tag. “Sure it was a risky decision. A very risky decision. … If for some reason Leroy decides to go somewhere else then we’re open to criticism. We probably deserve it. But my belief in talking to Leroy as much as I have is that he’ll be wearing a Seattle Seahawk uniform next year. I feel very confident of that.”

It’s unknown how close the deal will be to the reported, six-year, $36 deal that was offered to Hill be fore the tag was pulled.

The Seahawks pulled the franchise tag, which included an $8.3 million, one-year tender offer, just hours after they drafted Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry with the No. 4 overall draft pick in this year’s draft last week.

Mora said by drafting Curry the team softened the blow if they lost Hill. But for the team, Mora said the franchise tag had been constraining and had not helped in negotiations like they thought it would.

Further, Mora said the team did not want to risk a long hold out because of the mostly new defensive scheme the team is installing.

“A majority of what we’re doing on defense terminology-wise and assignment-wise will be different than what Leroy has done his first four years here,” Mora said. “So he is missing valuable time when he’s not here in order for him to be a productive football player for us on the field next fall.

“To ask a guy to come in, in a new scheme, a week before the first regular-season game – which happens a lot of times with these franchise guys – and be productive is a pipe dream. It just doesn’t happen very often.”
Oh well...for some reason the dynamic duo (Danman and Boy Blunder) think we are good to go at the SLB. Get ready for Week 1 as Kevin Boss lights us up as we have no LB that can cover a TE. :goodposting:

The Redskins will now have on the DL Orapka, a high draft pick, Haynesworth with the mega huge free agent contract, and Griffin and Carter with good free agent contracts. The DL should be so good, I think we many not even need a SLB. Just rush the 4 DL, bltiz a LB and a saftey, flatten the qb. Who needs to cover anyone with the pass rush they will generate. We'll see. Having a good pass rush will be new for Washington. Unless they force Haynesworth to play lanes and stop the run first and not let him play his game.

The bad thing is that the current alternatives to guys like Khary Campbell are......um.......uh.........
Five years ago, folks were saying that about good special teamers like David Terrell and Ifeanyi Ohalete, who were being replaced by guys like . . . Khary Campbell. Get young, athletic, hungry football players and coach 'em up.

The bad thing is that the current alternatives to guys like Khary Campbell are......um.......uh.........
Khary is upset because the 'Skins drafted 2 LB'ers that can do what he does, but are far younger than him. Add that they will command a smaller salary and we have the makings of what appears to be a smart move by the dynamic duo...errr....Front Office. Khary should have taken their offer before the draft, most vets understand that is the risk they take waiting until after the draft has taken place.

Mike Williams

Mike Williams hasn't played a down in almost three-and-a-half years. The 29-year-old weighs 404 pounds, almost 70 more than any other player on Washington's roster.

There were guffaws from media members Sunday when Redskins coach Jim Zorn said the new 6-foot-6 right tackle candidate was "as big as two guys standing side by side." But Williams, a former All-American at Texas, isn't worried about the skeptics. Whatever confidence he might have lacked after the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars cut him in consecutive offseasons has been restored by his loss of more than 40 pounds in the past 2 1/2 months and a renewed love for the game that made him rich.

Does he think he will start ahead of holdover right tackles Jon Jansen and Stephon Heyer? "I didn't come here not to," Williams said.

I heard on the radio that Khary Campbell will not re-sign with the Skins.
I read they offered him the vet min, and he rejected it.
And then he got all huffy. Something about disrespect. One thing's for sure, this organization didn't get where it is today by disrespecting 30-year old special teams players who have no hope of contributing on defense! :kicksrock:
A couple of comments:1. The current rules really encourages a team to offer the veteran minimum because only a portion of the salary counts against the cap. It is a way to spend more money.2. The veteran minimum for a player with a decent number of years service is a good salary. If Campbell doesn't get a better offer, he should consider coming back. He's a veteran special teams player.

Just found some deatils. Campbell will be in his 8th year, assuming he plays next year. The vet minimum is $745k for players with 7-9 years. He would cound $460k agains the cap. The Redskins can also offer him up to a $40k signing bonus.

How much egg? I'll say this much: the 'skins brought 2 Jerseys to Radio City Music Hall Saturday, and if Orakpo hadn't been there at 13, the other Player they were ready to select would have been an absolutely BLISTERING indictment of last year's Draft. ABSOLUTELY BLISTERING.
Really been bothering me lately. If we guess do we get a PM?My guess is: Derius Heywood Bay

Vinny mentioned trying to trade up to about where the Raiders picked on down. Why wouldn't Davis make the deal? Vinny also mentioned specifically Oakland taking an offensive player let a defender slip.

Seahawks, Hill agree to long-term deal

By GREGG BELL

AP SPORTS WRITER

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Seahawks and starting outside linebacker Leroy Hill have reached agreement on six-year contract worth a guaranteed $15.5 million.

The deal could potentially be worth $38 million.

Hill became a free agent last weekend after the team dropped its franchise tag on him and Hill refused to sign an $8.3 million tender offer.

The Seahawks said in a news release Thursday evening only that the team and Hill had "agreed to terms to a multiyear deal." The dollar figures were confirmed by a person close to the situation who requested anonymity because the terms were not made public.

Hill and the Seahawks were held up for days over contract language provisions related to any possible league discipline Hill may face from an offseason arrest in January in Georgia for misdemeanor marijuana possession.
Strike him off of the possibilities of being our SLB. Next...

Next = Larry Foote. I have zero feel for how realistic that is.

I keep seeing Foote's name brought up, but can he play SAM? He played inside with the Steelers, no?Also, I'm glad they didn't throw a lot of money at Hill.

JLC has some reports from mini-camp:

Veteran wide receivers D.J. Hackett and Kelly Washington will take part in the three-day minicamp that begins at 11 a.m. today at Redskins Park.
Obviously, the offensive line, and tackle in particular, is a concern and, to that end, the Skins have brought in Jeremy Bridges

...

Guard Frank Davis, who was signed by Detroit as an undrafted free agent in 2006 and had a brief stint with the Bengals last season (he was quickly waived), is also here on a non-roster basis. And Anthony Oakley, who is also listed by the Skins as a G/T
Orakpo Starts Out at Linebacker

Brian Orakpo was on the field for the first session of the three-day minicamp and, as expected, did all of his individual work with the linebackers, working as a linebacker with the first-team defense. He had told The Post before he was drafted that he figured to be broken in as a strong-side linebacker and to be used as a defensive end in pass-rushing situations. However, he's listed as a defensive end on the roster.

Here's how the first-team defense lined up:

Linemen: Phillip Daniels, Cornelius Griffin, Albert Haynesworth and Andre Carter

Linebackers: H.B. Blades, London Fletcher and Brian Orakpo

Secondary: Carlos Rogers and DeAngelo Hall (cornerbacks), LaRon Landry and Chris Horton (safeties)

Rocky McIntosh has been excused for personal reasons.

Orakpo's going to max out on work at LB early on to see what he's capable of and to bring him up to speed there as much as possible. I don't think we'll know until the preseason games how exactly he's going to be used or will line up, and given how much he would seem to representa departure from Blache's traditional 4-3 scheme, Blache himself may be undecided as of yet how he will use him. It's going to be one of the more interesting story lines of the next four-plus months.

I'm as happy about Horton as the next guy, but I would also love to see Landry move back to Strong Safety where I think he has a greater impact on the game.

In a perfect world (like we had with Sean Taylor :goodposting: ) yes, but relatively few safeties can play that "centerfield" position with the range that Landry has and also with his intimidating hitting ability closing to the sideline, so that would necessarily mean we'd have to use another first day draft pick to land such a player. It's just not the best use of our resources. :goodposting:

Yep, being able to play a cover 1 is huge. That allows 10 guys to do some different things.I like trying Orakpo at LB. They could even go more of a 5-2 route with him moving from around to different spots.

In a perfect world (like we had with Sean Taylor :excited: ) yes, but relatively few safeties can play that "centerfield" position with the range that Landry has and also with his intimidating hitting ability closing to the sideline, so that would necessarily mean we'd have to use another first day draft pick to land such a player. It's just not the best use of our resources.
