Jarmon needs to play more and get experience, I think there is good hope for him, especially considering how short of time he's been with the team.
Some promising info re: Jarmon:
Defensive end Jeremy Jarmon, the 21-year-old former Kentucky standout, is heading into just the fourth game of his NFL career. But he played more snaps on defense in last week's loss at Detroit than he did in the first two games combined.

"I'm definitely caught up," said Jarmon, who was taken in the third round of the July 16 supplemental draft, long after Barnes and his fellow rookies had finished minicamp and organized team activities. "My leash at this point is gone. They expect me, if I'm out there, to get it right."

Jarmon's role could expand soon. He already is ahead of 13-year veteran end Renaldo Wynn, who has been inactive all three games. And Phillip Daniels turns 37 in March.
It's good news that he is learning the NFL game so fast. I don't think they have removed the leash from Justin Tryon. Or Devin Thomas yet.

the draft

Michael A emails me an interesting piece of research.

Czabe,

A friend of mine, with obviously too much time on his hands, did the following analysis:

Just for fun, I thought I’d take a look at how the Skins have drafted the past 10 years (2000-2009) and compare them to some of the perennial playoff teams from this past decade.

Total number of picks:

Tennessee – 95 (!)

Philadelphia – 82

Indianapolis – 81

Baltimore – 81

New England – 79

Pittsburgh – 78

NY Giants – 74

Washington – 63

Total number of picks in the first 4 rounds:

Tennessee – 53 (56% of picks are in the first 4 rounds)

Philadelphia – 44 (54%)

New England – 43 (54%)

Indianapolis – 42 (52%)

Baltimore – 42 (52%)

Pittsburgh – 40 (51%)

NY Giants – 40 (54%)

Washington – 27 (43%)

# of offensive linemen drafted (OG+OT+C):

Philadelphia – 17 (21% of all picks were offensive linemen)

New England – 15 (19%)

Baltimore – 15 (19%)

Pittsburgh – 15 (19%)

Indianapolis – 14 (17%)

Tennessee – 13 (14%)

Washington – 8 (13%)

NY Giants – 8 (11%)

# of defensive linemen drafted (DT+DE):

Tennessee – 16 (17% of all picks were defensive linemen)

New England – 14 (18%)

Indianapolis – 14 (17%)

NY Giants – 13 (18%)

Philadelphia – 12 (15%)

Pittsburgh – 12 (15%)

Baltimore – 9 (11%)

Washington – 7 (11%)

# of quarterbacks drafted:

Washington – 7 (11% of all picks were quarterbacks)

Baltimore – 7 (9%)

New England – 5 (6%)

Pittsburgh – 5 (6%)

NY Giants – 4 (5%)

Philadelphia – 3 (4%)

Indianapolis – 2 (3%)

Tennessee!– 1 (1%)

Finally, each teams’ records since 2000 (not including this season):

New England – 102-42-0 (.708) – 6 playoff appearances, 3 Super Bowl titles

Indianapolis – 101-43-0 (.701) – 8 playoff appearances, 1 Super Bowl title

Pittsburgh – 94-49-1 (.653) – 6 playoff appearances, 2 Super Bowl titles

Philadelphia – 92-51-1 (.639) – 7 playoff appearances

Baltimore – 83-61-0 (.576) – 5 playoff appearances, 1 Super Bowl title

Tennessee – 83-61-0 (.576) – 5 playoff appearances

NY Giants – 80-64-0 (.556) – 6 playoff appearances, 1 Super Bowl title

Washington – 66-78-0 (.458) – 2 playoff appearances

In the past 10 years, the Skins have drafted as many quarterbacks as defensive linemen and almost the same number as offensive linemen. The majority of their picks (57%) are in rounds 5-7 (the rounds where a player is less likely to make the club let alone be an impact player). This team really, really needs a true GM to turn this around. I was thinking of doing comparisons to other clubs, but frankly this has depressed me more than I thought it would.

This was the reaction to Sally Jenkins's column above, (a very good column which is HERE ) from Larry Lapdog Michael and Vinnie Cerrato. Read this stuff if you really want to barf:

Maybe he was joking. I'm not sure. But he definitely wasn't joking when he started discussing this week's Sally Jenkins column, which apparently might as well have been written in pig's blood by Trotsky or Che.

"You can take any type of legitimate criticism that is thrown your way," Michael told Vinny Cerrato during that same episode of Redskins Nation. "I've known this man for about 25 years--we're getting old Vinny--way back to the days at Notre Dame. But you know what, it really bothers me when someone from out of town, someone who is not from this community, takes a low blow, cheap shot at this man right here, as well as the organization. Because if you're here every day, you see how hard, the work that's being put in, and you know what's going behind this.

"And yes, the team COULD play better. But the cheap shots, the low blows, and almost a vicious personal attack that I see in the paper from someone that IS not in this community, it bothers me. It really bothers me. Why don't you show up once in a while? Maybe these folks who write these articles come and go, but the venom that is there is so personal. You wonder what the motivation is when you see a column like that with a personal, low blow attack at Vinny Cerrato. What do you think? I don't even, is that a question I just asked you? I don't know. It just bothers me when I see that type of reporting."

"I'm gonna send all my Super Bowl rings and national championship rings and conference championship stuff and I'm gonna e-mail it," Cerrato promised. "You know, I'm gonna send her pictures of all those, you know, because she probably doesn't know what they look like."

"Oh, no doubt about that," Michael said approvingly. "And I guess the fact that you HAVE had some success proves that you're a failure. I mean, it makes no sense to me. It makes no sense to me. But anyway Vinny, thank you so much for stopping by."

"Maybe she wants to come on the radio show and talk about it?" Cerrato wondered.

"Well Vinny's radio show, coming up Friday, I'm sure you would welcome a phone call," Michael said.

"Oh-oh, would I," Cerrato agreed.

Then both men laughed the laugh of kings.

Jason Reid (whom I enjoy but damn, I miss LaCanfora)

Many in the organization knew Thomas probably wouldn't last long and he suffered a season-ending triceps injury in Week 2 against the Rams. Second-year guard Chad Rinehart, who did not play in a game last season, played against the Lions and committed only one major mistake in the game, I was told.

We'll see how Rinehart fares, but after three games it's clear right tackle is a major problem. Heyer practices hart and does the best he can, but he just hasn't played well in pass-protection or the running game. He has had major breakdowns in protection at big moments in games - and it seems he's by far the best right tackle on the roster. And it's not just about how many sacks or quarterback pressures a player is charged with when he grades out. It's about the ability to deliver at key moments in games -- what Magic Johnson called "Winnin' Time."

After watching Heyer for three weeks, I'm convinced the coaching staff has no confidence in tackle Mike Williams. Heyer has played so poorly (I'm not allowed to attend most of practice, but I've been told he's pretty much the same there, too) that there's no way Zorn and his assistants wouldn't turn to Williams, or at least open things up for competition, if they had confidence in him.

Williams should be commended for his impressive, rapid weight loss, but he has not played in a regular-season game since 2005. But this is where the team is now: with Rinehart and Williams as the top backups.

And before anyone brings up guard-center Will Montgomery, the reality is Rinehart and Williams are the guys the Redskins knew they would have to turn to if there were injuries at guard and tackle. Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels has played in pain because of knee problems, and he might not make it through the season. If Samuels sits out, Heyer would move to left tackle, Williams would join the first-team at right tackle and quarterback Jason Campbell might retire (just kidding).

I couldn't get up to watch the game today, (very late night at work last night) Campbell looks like he sucked from the stat line.....recap?

anyone watching this segment on the skins on espn pregame?
No. What did they say?
They listed all the problems and pretty much pointed the finger at Snyder for being too involved and clueless.
Used a quote from the Jenkins article. Also had quotes from players all sticking up for Snyder saying he loves his players and put a lot of faith in them and only wants to win. Wilbon said he wants to win but doesn't know how.

Worst game I ever remember seeing him play. Underthrowing, throwing into coverage, hesitant to run or throw....Couldn't have helped that we come out with a godd run on the first play of the game and follow it with a sack and then a sack/fumble.

A win's a win, right? It's simply time to accept this isn't a good team.

On the bright side, I had great seats for the game. My seats are about 7 rows from the top of the stadium. As my son (4 years old) and I were walking from the Metro stop to the stadium, a car leaving the stadium stopped. The driver yelled out, "You taking your son to the game?" I said I was. He asked if I had good seats and I said no. He told me that he was leaving because his son was sick and gave me his tickets. So, we ended up sitting five rows from the field in an endzone. Unfortunately, it was the end of the field where pretty much nothing happened, but it made the day more fun.

Cool story. Yes, we are not good. All my optimism is gone. The Panthers stink and they will have their way with us. Then we beat the Chiefs before going 2-8 the rest of the way.Go Caps!!!

We have no one who can cover Steve Smith. And DeAngelo Williams will run all over the place. The only hope against Carolina is that Delhomme throws 4 picks, which could happen.

Delhomme would throw 4 potential INTs at Carlos Rogers and that doofus would drop them all.

This is untrue. I think if Delhomme threw 100 straight balls and hit Rogers in the chest each time he may be able to catch 4.

Let's hope they're in Hall's direction, because if they're at Rogers they'll be "disrupted plays".edit: I should have read the rest of the thread before replying :deadhorse:

Bleah. How can a win feel so utterly dispiriting?

Tampa ranked 31st in total D, we got 280 yards against them, more than 100 under their average.

They were giving up over 5 yards per carry, we got 3.6.

They got as many sacks as they did the first three games combined.

They got four turnovers, as opposed to only getting two the first three games.

If Tampa had startd Leftwich, they probably would have beat us.

Kevin Sheehan has come around a little bit in his assessment of the Redskins this morning on the radio: "a below-average team".

The Redskins are a bad team. While watching the game, I kept telling myself that the Redskins make bad team look decent to pretty good. Campbell, who I have said is just about the lone bright spot of the Redskin's season, had an aweful day. The running game looked the best it had all year. Maybe they can schedule a scrimage against a high school team to get the yards per carry over 4.0. The run defense in the first half was bad, but got a lot better in the 2nd half. The pass defense usually makes the qb look like an all pro. But Freeman missed a lot of passes. So far, everything I have seen makes be believe they will get crushed when the face a mediocre or good team. But we won't find out for 3 more weeks when they face the Eagles.

The eternal optimist would say that's a good sign. He played horribly most of the day and they still won. And, he played horribly most of the day and was still able to make some big plays. He was the main reason they struggled AND the main reason the won.Other positives:1) I thought Portis looked pretty good (when he wasn't tripping over his own feet). I honestly don't think he's "done". I think he's still very capable of producing some big games.2) Moss is still a game breaker. He can change a game in one play. And, it was great to see Campbell hit him in stride. He usually misses that.3) Orakpo's starting to produce more pressure.4) Doughty is a solid tackler.5) Jarmon is getting more snaps. He's even being used more on passing downs at DT. He was chasing Johnson around late in the game and caused that last fumble. If he can surpass Daniels soon, the DL should get better.6) No. Five is enough.

Funniest moment at the game...

Every game they have a Drive of the Game, Crunch of the Game, and Play of the Game that they put on the mini-tron. And, of course, they sponsor them. So, it's like the Lays Potato Chips Crunch of the Game or something like that. Well, towards the end of the first half, the stadium announcer said, "Today's [insert sponsor] Play of the Half is this 15-yard pass to Santana Moss in the second quarter." Everyone booed. :bye:

The booing was pretty heavy early and as the team left for halftime. But, there was no booing in the second half. Shocker, they perform and they're cheered. The crowd even started to get fairly lively at times in the second half. Players talk about how they feed off the crowd and would play better if they were cheered and not booed. What they don't seem to get is that they'll be cheered if they play well. They talk as if they think it starts with the fans. It doesn't.

How'd the Funky Four look? Hope they didn't get booed... :)

Well, they don't do the Funky Four/Five any more. Thank goodness, that was getting really old.

Just for clarity, when the intros came up before the game, there weren't any boos. Cheers for the intro of the defence, cheers for the Skins getting the opening kickoff...then came sack #1. Restless muttering. Sack #2, fumble, turnover at the ten yard line. Boos started up. Two plays later, Johnson's first NFL pass is a touchdown, courtesy of Carlos "Was I really a top ten draft pick?" Rogers. That's when it really got noisy with the booing. And considering we were down 7-0 with 13:00 left in the first quarter, after having received the open kickoff, is that surprising?

Stadium looked about 75% full in the upper and lower decks. Just a guess. Club seats as usual were less populated.

:lmao: Seemed more populated than the Rams game. I agree with 75% of the upper deck, although I'd say probably a little higher, but I'd probably say over 90% of the lower bowl. Very few empty seats near me. And, you have to remember that at any given time there are quite a few people at concessions or in the bathroom or just getting out of the sun.

Mods - please move this thread to the FFA unless/until the Redskins start playing some game that actually resembles NFL football.

Right now they look like old people screwing.

shamefully, I was watching this exchange. the 555 comments to the Jenkin's article are priceless. was a college scout for the 49ers in '94 - he has one ring. he certainly has to know that he has but one, no? And it can be argued that he had nothing to do with the championship.

Did I just read an article about Vinny Cerrato bragging about championship rings? From when? 20 years ago? Must be, because he, nor the Skins have done ANYTHING noteworthy since 92. Do you hear Belicek bragging about his rings? Which are only from like 2-3 years ago? NO, you don't. Because this is a "what have you done for me lately" league. And you have done zippy lately Vinny. Zippy. Win something. A division championship, a playoff game (I won't even say Superbowl as that is a joke). Then talk. As of now, I agree with all the hatred being heaped your way. It isn't even just the wins, it is all the bad...BAD decisions made over the past decade.
Cerrato somehow got on to good teams. BANDWAGON, spell it out. The 49ers won Superbowls in 81, 84, 88, and 89. They had just failed an attempt at a three-peat, barely loosing the conferance championship game. After 9 straight 10+ win seasons and 10 out of 11 (including the 81 superbowl season), they hire Cerrato as director of college scouting.

They did win again in 94, but with how much of his 3 draft clases? Such a stacked team and it could easily have been forgivable to not see any of his picks on the field. But he got promoted to Director of Player Personnel the following season. "In 1994, the team spent large amounts of money on the addition of several star free agents from other teams, including Ken Norton, Jr., Gary Plummer, Rickey Jackson, Richard Dent, Charles Mann and Deion Sanders." I'm quoting from Wiki(He must have a thing for Deion). It goes on to say "Additionally, several rookie players made key contributions to the team, some becoming season-long starters such as defensive tackle Bryant Young, fullback William Floyd, and linebacker Lee Woodall." Bryant Young, William Floyd and Lee Woodall? Cerrato may have influenced Roger Craig and Ronnie Lott being allowed to leave via free agency, it seems to correlate to his arrival. He might have been an advocate of Steve Young over Joe Montana. They traded Montana in 93 and in the middle of 99 season (Cerrato's last year) Young retires fearing he'll end up like Muhamed Ali. Guess Cerrato doesn't like to draft lineman. He started with their first no-playoff season in 9 years and ended with their first losing season in 17? What ever they did to win 4 superbowls in 8 years or even the 5th in 13 years early in Cerrato's stay his influence despite having "expertise" in college scouting was for the team to let go of it's best players and start spending heavily on over priced free agents (giving up draft choices in the process). Is "Corporate Axe Man" the right term? Maybe it was belated for the Redskins (as they were a power house during the same time frame as the 49ers). But Snyder comes in with Cerrato following a time of dominance, to downsize and squeeze the cupboard for all it's worth. Making a big show of trying futilely to make the team better by spending big on free agents. It's enough to make me want to read the contracts of the players. Are Cap problems real? Are they based only on incentives that will never be reached and a extremly loyal fan base? At least the $49ers owner had the decency to get in a riverboat scandal and have his brother take over. Does Snyder have a brother? How about a distant cousin?
""I'm gonna send all my Super Bowl rings"

"Rings"? Plural "rings"? Geez what an insecure tool he must be to refer to his *one* Super Bowl ring (as the head of college scouting for the Niners) as "all my Super Bowl rings".

Naturally, Vinnie doesn't mention that the Niners never went back to the Super Bowl after he was promoted to Director of Player Personnel.

I have the flu and watched the game...they looked as bad as I feel. They did seem to play better in the second half, but I had to keep reminding myself that it was only just the Bucs. Campbell look horrible and unless this guy does a 180, he is is a back up in the NFL going forward. There were a few encouraging things to see, but the negative stuff just outweights the positive by so much that it's hard to focus on such little things. As stated for awhile and others, we are in trouble boys.

Washington fans have trouble accepting that a Redskin team is below average, and I include myself in that. But Washington sportscasters have an even harder time accepting it. Tom Boswell is a good writer, and this is a good article. But jeez, even using the word "playoffs" is just stupid the way the team has played for the last 12 games.

As soon as he got the play over his headphones from Zorn, he told his offensive linemen in the huddle, "This will be a touchdown if we just have time to get the ball out."

He got the time. And it was.

Did we just see a season change? It's far too early to say. But we didn't see a season die. And it could have -- in hails of boos so grating to the Redskins that, when Moss crossed the goal line, he made a "Shhhhh" sign to the home crowd. Ever see that before?

If the Redskins had plummeted to 1-3, with such a tough late-season schedule, it would have been hard, bordering on hallucinatory, to make a playoff-chase case for the Redskins. Now, if they take care of their next two games, maybe we can talk.

The comments following the article about Michael and Cerrato are worth reading as well. There are a lot of angry Redskin fans.

Cerrato is trapped in a zero sum game of his own making. He is unemployable outside of DC and he knows it. It is an irrefutable fact in front offices across the league that he is abhored on a personal level. Irrespective of how many rounds he buys at the bar of the St Regis Resort, ppl simply don't like him. This attitude would be welcomed were it born of jealousy, if Cerrato worked rivals to the Skins' advantage, had he an eye for talent and a knack for just the right free agent. Sadly for us, he is a pidgeon. A mark to be glad handed and taken advantage of in personnel decisions. This lack of professional respect is reflected in Cerrato not serving on one league committee, nor does his name appear on any lists when teams consider making a GM hire.

Cerrato is a window teller at The Bank of Snyder who lacks the EQ to grasp the degree to which he is genuinely despised by his peers. Unfortunately for Skins fans, he does possess the requisite IQ and sense of self preservation to know that if he wants to make a living in the NFL, his only option is Snyder. Cerrato like 99% of us, has a price where principle takes a back seat to $ and in the case of Cerrato its big $ and a 'dream job'. So he plays the public face of Snyder's petulant child, cashes his checks and in turn surrounds himself with sychophants like Michaels who himself is trapped in this Machiavellian circle of $ for warped loyalty, defined by mindlessly reading Snyder's cue cards and attacking perceived 'infiltrators'.

The perversity of Cerrato's tenure in DC is manifested in the Skins being a hardship post in league personnel circles. This is a particularly dispiriting phenomena considering Snyder's willingness to cut checks.
Seriously, the amount of propaganda (not just PR) coming from Redskins Park is amazing. I tried to watch Redskins Nation on Friday night and had to change channels once they read the viewer e-mail. How insecure are you when the first one spends at least a paragraph going on about a good job everyone is doing and how much they like hearing Larry on the radio and TV giving the straight scoop on the Redskins?

I cannot believe that a media town like DC has ZERO programming that tries to present some degree of balance about this team.
Anybody that watched the program last Thursday has got hurl at the early part of the show. I work as editor here in VA, and this is one of the most horrendous, biased conversation I have ever seen. I thought they were going to start making out.

Loved this gem:
"I was encouraged by our players. There was nothing that resembled giving up. Although I was taking a few deep breaths," said Zorn, who is as refreshingly candid and out of the rigid NFL mold as any Redskins coach since Steve Spurrier. "We had committed men after last week's demoralizing loss."
Gee, in the whole entire pantheon of such coaches who qualify during that timeframe, who might he be referring to? :lmao:

I heard Blache refer to Hall's INT as possibly being a season-changing play.

But, at least they've won their last three home games. That's a step in the right direction for a team that hasn't held serve at home enough.

It was. Instead of 4-12 they'll be 5-11. :goodposting:

89 points in 8 games. FedEx Field must be a pitcher's park.

From the Redskin Insider:

Ex-Titans RB to Try Out with RedskinsFormer Tennessee Titans running back Chris Henry is scheduled to work out for the Redskins on Tuesday, a league source said. With top back Clinton Portis slowed by injuries and off to a slow start this season, the team is seeking a spark in the running game. Offensive coordinator Sherman Smith was Henry's position coach with the Titans. Henry, a second-round pick in 2007, rushed for 119 yards and had a 3.8-yard average in 2007. The Houston Texans also are believed to be interested in Henry. By Jason Reid | October 5, 2009; 3:42 PM ET
My interpretation: Mason, Aldridge, maybe even Betts, have not provided a "spark".

Can someone explain Zorn's obsession with forcing Fred Davis every game? Last year he gave him an end-around and this year they've thrown him two screens. And Davis has done nothing with any of them. Actually, he's done less than nothing. He's lost yards on those plays.

They haven't even given Alridge a chance. It would be nice if they'd put him on the field at least once. And, as we've been saying, Mason and Betts don't really offer anything different than Portis. (Mason's one run this week was nice; he made a nice move.)From the little I know about Henry, he doesn't really provide a "spark". I think he's a bigger guy and not a faster guy.I guess it's easier to keep replacing your RB4 than it is to find a way to run block better.

And I think Detroit gets off the schneid first here. W1: Detroit 27, Washington 17

W2: Detroit 13, Washington 9

W3: Detroit 19, Washington 14

W4: Detroit 24, Washington 16

W8 Detroit hosts St. Louis - I think they get it done then. Heck - when will we break 20?

Seriously, can this team waste a better schedule than what they have to start this season? Here are their "easy" opponent's current scoring +/-.Rams -49: -2 of that is from the Redskins. -47 from their other two opponents.Lions -27: +5 from the Redskins. -32 from their other two opponents.Bucs -50: Averaging a 17 point loss and the Redskins are favored by 7.Panthers -50: Have a bye this week, so that's how they'll enter the Redskins game.Chiefs -37: Play NYG and DAL the next two weeks before facing the Redskins.Right now they're 1-1 against this pathetic string of opponents. And I have little confidence they'll be more than 2-3 in these 5 games.
To update this:
Rams -84: -2 of that is from the Redskins. -82 from their other three opponents.Lions -51: +5 from the Redskins. -56 from their other three opponents.Bucs -53: -3 from the Redskins. -50 from their other three opponents.Panthers -50: That's from 3 opponents. Play the Redskins this week. Waiting on the point spread here.Chiefs -48: Play DAL this week before facing the Redskins.
If they can beat CAR, I see them at 4-2 before Philly. It will be just enough to give us some hope before receiving a major beat down. But, I don't see them beating CAR and they'll be 3-3 after beating KC. And we'll all rightly expect the major beat down that is unavoidable.
