I don't think that this is the distraction to the team that some will suspect. They didn't just fire Zorn or a coach, and the players don't work with Cerrato.

And BTW, it is going to be fascinating to listen to Gruden on MNF, especially if Allen is hired as the GM between now and then.

Odds Cerrato is in the owners box week 2 2010 are >95% unless Cerrato finds a new gig. Dan is firing him for public perception, not because he thinks Cerrato sucks. Remember, Cerrato was in Danny's box the week after Schottenheimer fired him. Schottenheimer was basically a dead man by week 5 thanks to Vinny.

- I think we'll know the new GM very, very soon.

- I think Cerrato's next gig will need to be in college, cause I don't see him being hired again in the NFL. Maybe he has something set up at ND? No matter what, we need him to leave the DC Area to put a true end to this fiasco.

 to Gruden as HC.

he spent too much time developing Chris Simms -- that's one reason he was fired from the Buccaneers.

It's got to be weird to be Cerrato right now and listen to the jubilation in DC. It's like attending your own funeral and hearing nothing but venom spewed about your life.

I was hoping he'd still do his radio show tomorrow morning, but he's not. That would have been awesome.

Terrible move to hire Bruce Allen. I'm not impressed with Gruden -- he had a real hard-on for Chris Simms and that tanked the Bucs franchise.

Both a happy day and a sad day.

Chucky will be next, followed by Teabow in April
They're not going to draft Tebow.
Please God I hope not.
There's no reason to believe that they will. NFL player evaluations of him mostly conclude either he can't be an NFL QB, or that a team whould have to spend several years re-doing their whole offense around him while he learns at QB. They're not going to waste a first round pick on that, with other team needs more pressing than "popular guy who might be a project".

I think one thing Danny did here but announcing these two things so close together is limit the amount of Vinny bashing that will occur. All the talk will quickly shift to Allen, Gruden, and the future of this organization and be less focused on Vinny and the problems of the past. Good move by Snyder to save his friend a little.

He also won his division in five of his eleven seasons and won a Super Bowl.If he comes here, wins the NFC East five out of 11 seasons and wins a Super Bowl, and then tanks the franchise because he's wrong about a QB prospect at the tail end of that run, that's totally cool with me.

At least Allen is a real NFL GM and we won't have to deal with bringing in a coach / GM with total control, something that almost never works. Surprised at the negative reaction to Allen. He had success with Al Davis as an owner for goodness sake.

I'm not dreading going to the Dallas game.
:goodposting: It will be very interesting to see how the team plays Monday night against NY and what the crowd is like. That game and the Dallas game might actually resemble what a late season Monday night division game should be.
I think it iwll be very interesting to see if there are any personel changes with Vinny gone. Of course the Randle El demotion has already been announced (again). And Rock has lost his KR duties to Thomas. If Randle El gets no punt returns (no rotation that Zorn already announced), that could be sign that Vinny was keeping Randle in there.

Article on Redskins.com about Cerrato, not entirely complimentary. Didn't think I would see that.

The Redskins are 12-17 in two seasons under Zorn, 6-15 since the midpoint of 2008. The offensive line fell apart in a pandemic of injuries, the young receivers drafted last season took too long to emerge and the disconnect between Zorn and the front office grew immense.
Then the Steve Spurrier Era (or Error) dawned. Two years, 12-20. A No. 1 pick wasted on quarterback Patrick Ramsey. A No. 2 pick wasted on receiver Taylor Jacobs (give at least partial blame to Spurrier for that). While the better teams in the NFL built through the draft, the Redskins misfired or, worse, swapped their picks for a bag of magic beans. Those beans rarely sprouted.

Five picks traded in 2003. Six in 2004 (including a first for Clinton Portis and a second for Mark Brunell). Three traded in ’06. Four in ’07. Four in ’08. Four in ’09.

Consider the extent of the waste. In 2008, the Redskins dealt their ’09 second-rounder to the Miami Dolphins for defensive end Jason Taylor. Then they decided he should play linebacker … on the other side of the field. No more Taylor. Released. Back to Miami. Playing well. They also had coughed up a No. 7 for another defensive end, Erasmus James. Right. And there was a No. 4 to complete the previous trade for guard Pete Kendall, also not resigned for ’09.

Remember this old children’s rhyme?

Yesterday upon the stair

I met a man who wasn’t there

He wasn’t there again today

Oh, how I wish he’d go away

Those are the Redskins draft picks – the men who aren’t there. The men who went away.
So the roster grew thin and the players got hurt and the offense stumbled and the Redskins dropped poorly-played games to bad teams. The coach got help he never asked for and lost the responsibility he coveted. Fan anger grew and most of it was directed at the front office. That’s the owner and the executive vice president for football operations. Owners never fire themselves.
The anger worked.

I'm wondering why everyone thinks that Allen's going to go 3-for-3 hiring Gruden as a head coach when he's a GM. :goodposting:
It just makes too much sense. You've got a strange year where 3 or 4 highly successful guys are on the NFL head coach market. One of them has a historic tie to Allen. Just as the initial rumblings about how the Holmgren/Shanny/Chucky/Cowher pieces will fall into place start to take shape, the Skins dismiss the owner's longtime righthand man out of nowhere and immediately hire Allen. Obviously not a done deal, but it's hard to ignore the timeline of the GM move and Allen's historical ties to Chucky.

OK....I get getting Bruce Allen....but why rush into it and sign him today??? It's not like he was in big demand.
BEacuse you get your pieces in place before every other team starts making changes
it still makes no sense to me to rush into it TODAY. It makes me uneasy.
I'm uneasy as well. Bruce Allen without Gruden is Vinnie-lite.As I wrote dozens of pages ago, Allen is not a personnel guy. He's more of a drunken glad-hander. Do not get me wrong - this has its place in business. There is value to having people with good people skills. Back-slapping is an art, of sorts. Vinnie was not well liked in NFL circles, but I think Allen may be. He's not known as a team builder, but as one who is able to facilitate business. That said, I cut my teeth on George Allen football, so I'm hopeful he can live up to the old man's legacy.

I'll take that because he's been given the GM title. I think that's important. I think that's a sign the Danny might let him "facilitate business." He can hire the guys that can build a team if he's not a great team builder.

I have to believe that when Gruden signed the extension with ESPN, he knew Bruce Allen would at least be in the running here in Washington or somewhere else. Had he wanted to keep his options open to team up with Allen again as a head coach, he would have done so. Instead he signed the extension for TV, an occupation that he has stated he has enjoyed much more than he ever expected.

I expect a total makeover of the coaching staff with no Gruden involved.

if no Chucky, I think I'd be a little pumped up for ol' #68 to rise out of Phoenix to the top spot.

Now THAT I would be pumped about.

I'd love to see how well Grimm can HC. But, I'd be very skeptical about Snyder's involvement if Grimm is hired. I would instantly assume he's still heavily involved and that it was his pick.

Wow, great news. I was in an off site meeting all morning. Got in my car, turned on sports radio up here, heard the news on a sports flash and was absolutely jubilant. Great news. I haven't even really thought much about Allen coming in, but all I know is that he's an upgrade over Vinny. I would love to see them nab Shanny as head coach and get this team in the right direction.

Grimm has been on a lot of long lists of coaching candidates but never made it to anyone's short list. Something's lacking there.

Allen has a press conference sometime this afternoon. One thing he has to deal with is how to not undercut the coaches or players for the last 3 games of the season. We're not in the offseason now, these are real games, they matter.

Allen, 53, is one of only a few people in the NFL who has helped lead teams that have won five division championships since 2000. He is the son of the late George Allen, the legendary former Redskins coach. Most recently he was the General Manager at Tampa Bay. Prior to Tampa, he was a Senior Assistant at the Oakland Raiders. In 2002, he was named the National Football League’s George Young NFL Executive of the Year.

Overall, I was pretty pleased with the freedom Larry Weisman had when he joined the Redskins. Sure, he was more critical when he was with USA Today, but he didn't become Larry Michael once he joined the Redskins.
 Loved the very end of the piece:
So Cerrato moves on. Perhaps to another job in football, perhaps back to ESPN. And the Redskins move on. A good choice of direction would be forward.
The obvious insinuation being that Cerrato was unable to do just that.

very excited with the news today. Looking forward to the off-season and to see who Allen will bring in as the HC. As others have mentioned, I don't think Gruden will come in as he recently extended his TV contract and seems to enjoy it. Gruden would not be an awful hire but I think the Skins can do better.

I love to see Shanny as HC or Snyder fly to NC and dump $12 mil/year in the lap of Cowher.

Jason Reid, on the eroded relationship between Zorn and Cerrato:

After last season's second-half slide, Cerrato sought more oversight of Zorn and the coaching staff, many in the organization said. He took an active role in seeking information about how the offensive staff operated under Zorn and Zorn's approach to game-planning each week. Cerrato even sat in on at least one staff meeting, which was highly unusual considering the separation coaches and player-personnel executives have historically had at Redskins Park.

On the team bus following a 27-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 29, Cerrato admonished Zorn in front of others for his handling of the offense in the two-minute drill at the end of the first half, according to team sources. The Eagles connected on two late field goals in the second quarter and took a two-point halftime lead after Zorn, instead of playing conservatively in an attempt to protect the lead, called passing plays that led to interceptions. Cerrato made it clear to Zorn that he was responsible for that loss, in large part because of the sequence that occurred just before halftime.

Cerrato privately and publicly lavished praise on play-caller Sherman Lewis while ignoring Zorn's role in the process despite Cerrato having stripped Zorn of primary play-calling duties. Cerrato told some in the organization that the season would have been salvaged if he had only "brought Sherm in sooner."

Initially hired as an offensive consultant on Oct. 6, Lewis assumed play-calling duties before the Week 7 game against the Eagles on Oct. 26 at FedEx Field. Although the Redskins' offensive production has increased with Lewis calling a portion of the plays (offensive coordinator Sherman Smith and Zorn still also contribute), Lewis does not devise the weekly game plans, handle pass protections or communicate much with quarterback Jason Campbell.

The Redskins truly have taken a collaborative approach to play-calling, but Cerrato declined to acknowledge the efforts of Zorn and the other assistants, team sources said.
Ugh. Good riddance.
